The machines in the kitchen gave off a strange, soothing cadence, making me think they already had music. I especially liked my booth, since it felt as though I sat within an establishment within an establishment, with the decorative wall art, the comfortable seats, and the large table. Despite the small space, the interior uses as much space as it allows with that booth being an example. As for the menu selection, you have a large array of options of Chinese cuisine. Food: 5/5 I ordered the Shrimp Egg Foo Young with sides of white rice and sauce. Every part of the meal had a well-prepared steam. The Shrimp Egg Foo Young had good texture along with the vegetables, even if it became difficult to cut with a plastic fork. While I could barely taste the shrimp, I could definitely taste the eggs and the vegetables. On their own they have an overall, unassuming taste, but dipped in the sauce and it has a pizza-like taste. I tried to use the sauce on the white rice as well, along with the complementary soy sauce, which definitely made the rice more savory and softer. Service: 5/5 I had no issues with the staff, whether it came to my order or the overall service. Cost: 5/5 Howell Kitchen manages to maintain a steady brand when it pertains to their food. Americans typically don't know about the distinct cultural identities throughout China, so I appreciate Howell Kitchen for specifying that they serve Szechuan and Cantonese cuisines. They look especially exquisite on their website menu, almost enticing anyone to place an order immediately. The wait time it took to prepare the Shrimp Egg Foo Young definitely matched the quality of the dish, since clearly the staff care deeply about the food they make and the establishment. The ambiance immersed me into the dining experience, and it did not try my patience while waiting for the order. Based on my first experience, I will say that it matched the standard appearance of a Chinese restaurant, with a tiny space and a view of the cooking process. However, what stood out was getting to sit nearby the painting, as though I became immersed into the landscape. The ambiance finds its way into the website as well. In order to enhance the Chinese cuisine within the website, my personal suggestion is to add quotes about Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine from throughout Chinese history. As a long time Howell, NJ residents our go to Chinese food take out has been 'Howell Kitchen' However lately the quality has been suffering so much so the food from there have absolutely no taste. In fact some of the fried food gives you heartburn probably because they don't replace the frying oils until it's totally burned. Their soup taste more like water than a soup. Even a Pork Fried Rice which was always very good, lost it taste. It is more like a white rice. It seems this place keep changing owners or cooks. Their prices are going up but it does not justify the bad quality. Time to find another place because I'm running out of heartburn medications! read more

Got some new items. The egg drop soup was really good, probably the only soup I really like there. Also got boneless spareribs and vegetable lo mein which was really good. Picked up an order tonight and I must say that everything was delicious. Egg drop and beef noodle soup both tasty and hot. Food appeared quickly, suspiciously so, in flimsy paper plates and cheap plastic forks, the kind that snap when you use force. The food was luke warm like it was pre-made and just warmed up in a wok. We have getting take out from Howell Kitchen for many years & always loved their food. About a year or so ago we noticed it changed & that the people who we used to see working there were no longer there. I assume the business was sold to someone else. Unfortunately the food has really gone downhill. We always ordered the house lo mein & did so again the other night. The noodles were fat & chewy, like they had been sitting around quite awhile. Our General Tso chicken dish had maybe 2 pieces of broccoli in it. The steamed dumplings our daughter liked, but she's in college & well, she'll eat anything. I use to order from Howell Kitchen a lot. The Food is OK but they deliver. Tonight I placed my order when it arrived It was not what I ordered. I called them and nicely asked them to correct the order and they told me it was too far for them to come back. This is a shame I used to order from them around once a week and they know I am a regular customer. Well they have lost a regular customer for poor customer service. I guess these guys got a new store manager or they just let this restaurant go. Howell Kitchen used to be, in my opinion, the best Chinese food place in all of Monmouth county. You would go to different Chinese food places, or go to your friends house and have their greasy, fake Chinese takeout and you would be so grateful to know that at least you had an amazing Chinese takeout like Howell Kitchen. I had to add loads of soy sauce to it just to shovel it down. and the rice used to be so good, but now it's like this strange texture and color with some raw onion and pork to authenticate it. I could cry knowing how good this food used to be and how it's suddenly gone. And how could I forget the egg rolls. They used to be golden, crispy, meat and veggie packed, salty but not too overbearing with a hint of sweetness from the pork. Now, if you bite into one, it's falls apart!
