My second visit in one month. Chen's seems to have changed for the better. Food is very tasty, fresh and plentiful. Order the drunken noodles if you are a Chow fun fan. Pad Thai was very good and Tempura was fresh and flavorful. Service is great. Only downside is you have to pay for hot tea. read more

I just spent $35.00 at this restaurant today and I'm highly upset! I ordered Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, a large Wonton soup, Sexy Girl Roll and Fried Rice. The rice that came with the shrimp and lobster sauce was just fine, HOWEVER the shrimp itself was old and mushy!!! I took one bite of the shrimp and had to spit it out for fear of if I consumed it, I would get food poisoning!! I poked my fork into the other pieces of shrimp and only two were firm as shrimp should be. That's right, only two pieces weren't spoiled! The rotten pieces were so mushy and soft, I am utterly disgusted. In the photos I've attached, in the first picture is one of the spoiled pieces that I placed on the clear part of the container the restaurant provides to place the food. Management - WHY are you selling seafood that's old, spoiled and rotten?!? The last thing I would want right before the 4th of July holiday is to be in the hospital due to food poisoning. Staff were pleasant, noise level was very moderate. The restaurant can service large groups. The sushi rolls were a bit more experimental or modernize for American palette, traditional sushi was a bit scarce. However, the fish was quite fresh but some rolls were a little too loose and falling apart upon picking them up. The ramen was seasoned well, but my noodles were a bit clumpy which means it wasn't served as soon as it was boiled. The Shrimp and Lobster sauce was a great portion and made fresh! I had stopped ordering shrimp and lobster sauce at other restaurants because the smell was so fishy and pungent but Chen's Asian Bistro did not have that kick in your face fishy smell in fact it didn't smell fishy at all! We've eaten there and have done take out many times. The last 2 times for take out was a disappointment. Recently I ordered a chicken with mixed veg dinner combo with roast pork fried rice. I got plain brown rice instead. The next time i ordered the boneless spare ribs combo. The meat was so dry - it wasn't edible, but I did get the roast pork fried rice. Food really does not have much taste and I think it quite tacky to charge for tea, charge for brown rice as well as charge separately for an egg roll versus include with a dinner entry as do most restaurant. Dined in tonight , 2nd time and had take out once before. So I thought I would share our positive experience. I am very particular about chinese/asian food, having lived in NYC and worked near Chinatown. Simply put Chen's is the only place around here ( Freehold-Jackson) worth going to. Our group of 4 had rock shrimp and spare rib appetizers and a variety of chinese and thai mains. All were excellent. Service was good and prices are reasonable. BYOB. Highly recommend! read more

So after almost 3 months of digestive problems, doctors visits, and testing, it was determined that this place probably used and reused the oil in their dishes. My digestive system went haywire after consuming reused unfresh kitchen oil. I recall that I had a big dose of it from the extremely oily scallion pancakes. I have been looking for a good Chinese place since the one I loved in Howell changed owners. It is definitely worth the drive to Freehold. I love the fact it also has Japanese and Thai food. It would probably help to make a reservation, on a weekend. We were lucky there was one table open when we arrived on a Sunday night at 6:15pm. This is my 3rd time here in several months. My husband likes to order here a lot. He really likes their sweet and sour chicken. But, not only does this restaurant have Chinese food, they also do Japanese and Thai cuisine. So, their Chinese food isn't bad. I also believe they don't use MSG like normal Chinese spots because I don't get headaches. I have tried their teriyaki dinners - these aren't bad, nothing crazy special. I have tried their ramens as well. The tonsaku Raman isn't my favorite, the broth is has no taste what so ever. Their miso is actually ok. Now, their Thai food, I've tried the curry - not my favorite. The pad Thai - not my favorite either. My suggestion if you come here, just stick with Chinese or even rolls. The general tso's chicken is a good litmus test of a chinese spots quality. This one was at a 3 stars. I wish it was a little crunchier. The chicken is soaked in sauce and the coating didn't hold up. The sesame chicken was worse even though it is pretty much the same thing. Is it bad? No, but nothing to write home about. Stopped here with friends who recommended the place. They made a reservation which was waiting for us on our arrival. Our server came to quickly take our drink order and gave us ample time to review the menu. The place was nice and quiet and the ambiance relaxing. I started with a hot and sour soup while others had a wonton egg drop or a salad. I loved the sour flavor of my soup, but on a personal level I would have preferred a little more spice in the soup, We had a variety of dishes from shrimp in lobster sauce to teriyaki shrimp to sushi. They were not stingy with the nice-sized shrimp and I sampled the teriyaki shrimp, which was delicious. The sushi was nice and fresh and the presentation very nice. My personal dish had a crunchy spicy yellowtail roll and a tuna specialty roll. Once again, a personal preference, I would have liked a little more spice to the spicy rolls, but they were delicious. I ordered a green tea mochi ice cream for desert and the chocolate drizzle gave it the little extra to bring it over the top. There are many other offerings than what we ordered and enjoyed. It's a place I will look to try some of those on a return visit. read more

First time trying this place tonight and it did not disappoint!! Even the basic egg roll was delicious! My son who's 2 demolished one to himself and kept saying "it's so yummy" We got pad Thai, general Tso's, sweet and sour chickeand plain lo mein for the kids, the jumbo shrimp tempura roll and the shrimp dumplings. Everything was amazing! My boyfriend said the dumplings were the best he ever had! The pad Thai was HUGE and soooo delicious. The sushi was very fresh. The owner gave my daughter some prizes out of her little treasure box and she was thrilled. We ordered for take out but can't wait to eat in because the inside looked so welcoming! During Covid four of us were able to get seats indoors with no problem on a weeknight. Our waiter was both comical and friendly so it made for a nice atmosphere. Not feeling particularly adventurous I ordered General Tso's Chicken. They give you a good size portion with the chicken in the middle surrounded by the broccoli. My entrée came hot sizzling hot right from the wok. I have to say I enjoyed my meal and even had some left over for lunch the next day. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal and the consensus was to return again soon. read more

They recently opened during the quarantine, which must be difficult. We've tried out a lot of dishes from here since then and they can be a hit or miss. My parents seem to like their mapo tofu, as they keep ordering it. Half of the sushi is pretty good, but a lot of the rolls utilize a lot of mayo or cream cheese, which I don't really like. The cooked dishes, like their home style sauce stir fry or Szechuan sauce stir fry, taste pretty much the same, and not really worth it. Our favorite rolls are the BMW and the spider roll. read more

We made our first visit for lunch on 1/29/25. The food was excellent and the service was OK. The reason for the low review is we were overcharged on a gift card. We used a $50 gift card for a $21.68 bill and gave the waitress a cash tip. The made sure I put in the $21.98 for the total on the receipt. I checked the card online when I got home and found that we were charged $26.02 which suspiciously equaled the amount of the bill plus the suggested 20% tip. I called the restaurant but they insisted they only charged $21.68 to the gift card. It's a shame that I won't be going back and I won't be recommending it to anyone the food is good. read more

Had a really nice red curry shrimp for dinner tonight from Chen's. A large portion with 6 jumbo shrimp and tons of veggies and broth. Good heat. Also ordered the American Dream roll with tempura shrimp and spicy crab and a general tso's chicken. The ticket is written correctly but they always do something different than requested. This has happened several times. When I call they offer a store credit which I do not feel I will receive in future so we have to go back to restaurant for them to redo order. Appetizers are great (pot stickers, chicken wings, scallion pancakes, all very good) but the Slow Braised Whole Pork Shank is a masterpiece!
