Traveling through Alabama and found this little restaurant online. The food was excellent and so was the service.

Howie's Cafe was the very first food establishment we tried when we moved into our home in Salem, AL. The only initial downfall we experienced was that they stopped serving breakfast at 11 and we got there a few minutes after, craving breakfast food! However, we ordered our lunch to go and it was not disappointing. My husband got the Buffalo chicken tender sandwich and I got the country fried steak with their cornbread and greens (one of the best greens I've ever had). Since then, we have ordered breakfast food to go twice and it has been some of the best. Our go-to breakfast has been: Big Boy Breakfast with sausage patties + scrambled eggs Country fried steak with gravy on the side, hash browns, and pancakes You HAVE to try this place and the women who work here are so sweet! read more

The seating is space apart, utensils are in a plastic bag with napkin,I can tell this is a family setting with the family of 5 eating 6ft away, having a good family breakfast and a morning conversation which before rarely I seen, the new owner is the sister-in-law , so if you are in town come in and support her by in joying breakfast and lunch special. You do not get a lot of food on your plate for the money, the bathrooms are disgusting and place is dirty, For me I won't go back.

We go and eat at Howie's at least two times a month. On Saturday mornings for breakfast do not know anything about their lunch or dinner menu. Breakfast is quite good and reasonably priced. read more

No frills or background music, it's definitely a converted office space. But yummy food & good customer service matter most in a restaurant. Love this spot, it's a family staple for traditional diner breakfast and drip coffee. The staff is so nice, too! read more

Years ago in the South you cooked meats to well done for fear of bacteria guaranteed the chicken fried steak had no possible ability to have any bacteria. Very crisp from one side all the way to the other. The potatoes had no seasons, no butter margarine salt or pepper. The cucumber, tomato salad was good. The corn bread was very simular to biting into a desert, a desert of sand. Now after that, let me tell you about the staff. I would go back and try something else just to help the 2 servers that were running around taking care of everyone and everything. They were great. read more

Howie's Café is standard fare, but I can't see anyone doing it better. Everything was cooked well and I especially liked the bacon. Although they appeared to be short on waitresses, the one I had was on top of everything. She seemed to be managing the entire cafe well. Even with most of their customers going in and out without any protection for Covid on, the entire staff did. I will probably go back to Columbus for work and a trip to Howie's will definitely be on the agenda. read more

Great traditional cafe serving breakfast and lunch. Breatfast is simple but home cooked. I enjoyed the veggie omelet with home fries and a biscuit. Lunch is your voice of meat and 3 vegtables for 7 bucks. Staff is very friendly and prompt. This is a Non smoking facility, a rare but pleasant find for cafes in this area. read more
