This institution is an incredible resource that many people do not know exist. Despite what anyone…read moremight have told you, this is not a "kill shelter". A healthy young pitt bull is not going to be put down simply because it's a pitt bull. Large, clean, modern and staffed by carrying employees. It is an independent non-profit that has a contract with the city. All their financial, animal welfare, intake, adoption stats are online. I brought in a young high energy pitt I had rescued 5 minutes before closing. They were so kind. They allowed me to go to his pin which was in a large, cool, quite warehouse. Designed to avoid the barking chain event that occurs at small indy shelter when ever anyone opens the door. When you report a stray to 311, this is where they go. This is a well run institution. We need the indy shelters. We need it all. Foster/adopt a pet. Volunteer.

if i could leave a -review i would. my wife and i have adopted all of our dogs with the exception…read moreof the few we've adopted thru the rescue we foster for over the last 6yrs and in that time i have also adopted at least one from the algeries spca and going back to japonica st prior to that. we have also fosterd quite a few dogs that were adopted out and this goes back to 1984. yesterday i went to see three supposed yorkies who were up for adoption. first went to the wrong building and my fault but two ppl working one on computer who was resolving a personal issue because the other girl asked if she could help and bimbo was dumb enough to say once i grt this resolved. i took a walk and yes where i shouldn't have gone though it was not posted to do not enter or have a n employee with you. a worker basically yelled at i was not supposed to be there my bad but didnt deserve to be yelled at. i het redirected and ask about the three two had already been adopted the third was in a room on the floor but then told to see her i have to basically suit up for surgery because she has a respiratory infection. it is known atm that distemper is rampant in the state atm. i did i saw her very standoffish wow i now wonder why. why with that infection is she pn the floor to be adopted? oh also told after seeing her i was not allowed to have contact with any other animal......why? perhaps a lawyer or those on the governing board would like to know. aside from you better hope i do not have a dog who starts showing symptoms.....i guarantee it will not be favorable. i also expect no to see this review....that seems sop i will never set foot in that building again and i will also let all of the rescues that i ha e contact with know. seems that pup could have distemper and you are letting it be privy to people and other animals. i thought you job was to prevent cruelty and btw i tried to contact the shelter in sorrento to possibly see a pup up there for adoption and they are closed until july 6th because of possible contamination of the distemper virus. a very small parish and community but more sense apparently than ppl in the bigggggg city t h i s i s p a t h e t i c. also pathetic that if there is a negative review it cant be posted on the website to me that is willful misinformation and this incident is not over by a long shot wish to call me dont bother but im sure you would be willing to listen to an attorney

For those of you who haven't been here recently, this place is the SPCA now and it's WONDERFUL…read more They recently had an event where your cats and dogs could be brought in to be vaccinated for the year and microchipped (if you haven't already) all for $5. Doing this at the vet can cost you hundreds of dollars, so it's an awesome service they were offering for local pet-owners. I found out about it via their Facebook page. I recommend following them on Facebook to keep tabs on other helpful events they might host! At the event, the staff really tried their best to make things run smoothly and comfortably as possible. As you guys know, that's hard to do in the Louisiana heat and rain! It was a popular event, with lots of people, so the wait was kind of long, but that's inevitable. What impressed me was the staff coming out to check on people and their pets who were waiting outside. They put out hoses and water bowls for the animals and passed out cold drinks to the people waiting. When it started raining, they quickly mobilized people inside and reorganized the line to try to shelter as many people as possible from the weather. So considerate, right? They were really efficient too; the vaccination and microchipping for the cat I brought was completed in less than 5 minutes once we got to the front of the line. The vet administering the shots treated him (my chonky male cat) so well, he didn't protest or complain at all. He even licked the vet's fingers when she was done! I guess my cat liked this place too!

The facility is well maintained and very pretty. Plaquemines Parish only contributes for a third of funding so they can really use donations. My family had an abysmal experience with this shelter. We have been looking for a small dog to…read moreserve as a certified emotional support animal for my mom, who lives alone in an apartment. She found one, submitted her application and apartment lease, and was approved. She was asked to come meet the dog and, as long as the meeting went well, complete the adoption that day. I left work early, picked up my daughter early from camp, and then my mom (who lives 30 minutes in the opposite direction) to make the hour-long drive to complete the process. When we arrived a little after 3 p.m., we were shown to the interaction room by a man and woman who were either staff members or volunteers. As soon as the man left to retrieve the dog, the woman proceeded to tell us that the dog we were meeting and planning to adopt actually belonged to the man; he had had to surrender it due to his living situation, but just that morning had been able to find an alternative place to live and was hoping to get his dog back if my mom's adoption fell through. At this point, despite the male staff/volunteer returning with the dog, it was clear that my mom's adoption was never going to be approved. And it wasn't. Ultimately, they claimed that they had "suddenly" become aware that the dog was not suitable for apartment living and denied my mom's application. We ended up seeing the director, who couldn't even make eye contact with us and who just kept mumbling the same excuse for denying my mom's adoption. After an hour drive there, and forty-five minutes of awkward, frustrating, and completely wasted time at the shelter, we walked away with no dog and not so much as a sincere apology from the director or anyone on her staff to begin the hour-long drive back home. To be clear, I do not begrudge the staff member/volunteer his dog. My issue is the extreme unprofessionalism the staff and director exhibited. My mom's application and living situation had been approved, but someone on the staff decided they wanted their dog back. Why was the dog still listed? Why was my mom not notified of the change in situation before we made the two hour trip (more, when factoring in the distance I had to travel to pick up and drop off my mom) there and back? Why were we shown the dog and subjected to a frustrating and awkward situation, when it was clear from the get-go that this member of the staff was taking back his dog? Why did no one have the decency to just be straight with us and say, "Look, here's the situation. We are so sorry." Even that would have gone a long way. TL;DR--Had a completely inappropriate and unprofessional experience with this shelter's staff and director. Be wary of traveling to adopt here if you don't live in the immediate area.
