The store and range itself are small, it is a no thrills place, yet down to earth and you can get here just about anything you need. The service here is outstanding... perhaps the best out there as they don't come across as I know everything and your just a newbe. The place can be a bit hard to find as it's in this very tiny strip mall and you figure a gun range has to be somewhat big to accommodate the ranges. Right? Well, here the entire store and range is underground, so the entrance is literally nothing but a door which leads directly to a set of steps going down. The store and range certainly show their age and have been well used. But, from a business perspective this apparently keeps the overhead low as I find the prices here very reasonable! As for the range, the check in process here is perhaps the easiest of all ranges in the area. These guys are very accommodating and I like that fact that they encourage openly on bringing your kids along. The range itself is cramped and very loud. Okay, yea I know we are shooting off guns here and things just get loud, but here, the sounds really reverberate and I can really feel the shock wave at times when a .357 or higher is being used. I don't get this feeling at other ranges. The range can also get a little smokey at times. Despite these conditions, I really do like coming here as I get the feeling of being welcomed and I just feel very comfortable at these ranges. Some of my tightest patterns have been shot here and I think it has to do that I'm very relaxed when coming to this range. If you can, it seems that during the week days, just at opening time, the ranges is generally not as packed and I find it a great time to come. read more

my wife and i really love this place. we don't need a fancy place to shoot. HP/Condition Yellow does the job just fine for us. I have done a couple of transfers with then and they went smooth as silk. they watch over the range, but don't hang over your shoulder like at most places. as long as you are safe, they let you be. I served two tours, in Kandahar Forward Operating Bases. I'm very familiar with all kinds of weapons. When I came back to the states I decided to buy a pistol and after showing them my Foid and military ID I stumbled upon the hardest unnecessary sell I've every been through. The guy at the counter actually tried to sell me some remedial, newbie classes for people who have never fired a gun before in the their entire non-terrorist shooting life. And he would not let me rent a pistol from the shooting range either. until I had gone through his buddies class. He gave me their buisness cards. Jerry Anderson and Bill McLaughlin both offer classes to those who have never fired a shot in there entire lives. What are these jag offs going to teach someone who has fired just about every firearm in the Army's inventory. I fired LAW and TOW rockets all god damn day in afghanistan but I cant fire a 9mm in this boondock gunstore because I havent gone through your buddies "special" training. give me a facken break!!! read more

Adequate size for a gun store in a smaller town. Range rates reasonable. Rented three 9mm's: Beretta 92FS - it stunk. Loved the feel and my groupings were tight. BUT - every round didn't eject and load cleanly as the gun was very dirty. Only shot 20 rounds - correction - loaded 20 rounds but only fired 15 as feed and eject problems cause non fired rounds to be manually cleared and ejected on the floor. Immediately exchanged for Sig Sauer 226. Sites were off down 4" at 25' other than that only jammed three times in 70 rounds. Then exchanged for Springfield XM which worked flawlessly for 60 rounds. Typical friendly and knowledgeable staff for a range and at least they didn't blame the shooter for the problems. Dear HP - it's really not to hard to keep your rentals in top condition. Do you keep your personal guns uncleaned and poorly sited?, Your customer expect rentals to be in the same condition as your personal guns. I'll go again once I've purchased my 9mm. read more

HP Shooting Center is a small but fun shop and range. Range is a bit short and can get rather smoky at times, but it is very inexpensive. This is NOT the place to take out your brand new .50 S&W. But if you want to spend a bit of time sending rounds down range, or test out that new box of defensive JHP in your pistol, then this is the place to go. Staffwise, I have always had good experiences in my various dealings with Bill and staff. They have gone out of the way to help me as a newbie renting virtually everything while on range. This is for the range only. I have not done any other business with them other than range use. I brought my own gun and did not rent one from them. You get what you pay for. The range has low rates which is great - BUT it isn't as modern as other ranges that you may be used to. The target carriers are manual and not electric. Which means that you need to guess at the distance and you can't adjust the angle of the target. Not a big deal because again, you get what you pay for and the rates reflect the reality. The acoustics are also not up to modern standards. Lots of steel, concrete and flat surfaces. Not a big deal because again, you get what you pay for and the rates reflect the reality. If I had to guess, I would also say that they air filtration/exchange is not up to par with a modern range as well. I am guessing on this - but the reason that I am guessing is because this range is in the basement of the building and there was a musty smell that enveloped you when you walk in. It actually reminded me of a bowling alley that you would find in the basement of a bar back in the 1980's. Not a big deal because again, you get what you pay for and the rates reflect the reality. A decent little range up north if you happen to be in the area, but maybe not worth driving an hour or more. If you are in the area or up for a drive, by all means check it out. First time going to this range. Not really impressed. It's old, think late 70's early 80's. The store and range are in a basement so they only have 7' ceilings, not a big deal for most people, but if you are over 6'2" expect to hit your head on things. Range is.... Okay. There is no sound deading materials so even with ear protection it's still extremely loud. Air quality is not the best but acceptable. Dim lighting in range. Owner/employee was extremely helpful and it was cheap. But for a couple bucks more, I'll go somewhere a little newer. read more

It's good. It may not have the modern look of those other guys, but it doesn't have the prices either. Got a super great deal on my last gun from them. Most everyone seems nice. They don't really seem to appreciate new shooters. I'm not a new shooter, but did catch some attitude from the owner. Maybe the poor ventilation and lack of sunlight makes you crabby? The range is just ok. Dirty, hot, and poor ventilation. Let's face it, once you're in your lane, who cares what it it like behind you? Even on target doesn't have anywhere to set your range bag except the floor. At least HP has a counter in the room. No electric target send. It's the old crank wheel, which is fine. This shooting range is very competitively priced compared to its geographically-nearby competitor, and offers a special senior rate, which is extremely nice to me! The targeting equipment is not state-of-the-art; but it definitely does the job. The manager is both well-informed and well-inclined toward sharing his insights. Also, the ammo prices are pretty good compared any geographically-nearby competing range. Range is OK but needs better ventilation especially when all the ranges are in use. The owner/employees can be moody at times and sometimes feels like you're inconveniencing them when you show up. The price for the range is on the low end of ranges in the area so that is good. read more

I am not a competitor or anything else. I shot here for years the prices were good the range was outdated for ventilation and gets very smoking when busy. I then had an issue with the staff, they were never super friendly but then one time with my wife, 2 cousin and cousin's girlfriend they were very rude. My cousin came in for his first time and they barely went over the rules to him. Since they were busy we were going 2 at time. He went in with his girlfriend and he loaded his magazine at the bench by mistake never place them in the gun and they blew gasket and started yelling at him like he was a 2 year old. Now my cousin is a 20 year cop and had his duty weapon in his bag. The other clerk came by the window and saw it was loaded in a holster in the bag and blew gasket. I tried to explain he was a cop and he just said he did give a crap and he needed to follow the rules. I told him he did not have to be so rude but he did not care. So they kicked him off the range and when we asked if his girlfriend could still shoot he said not by herself. Which surprised me since she had a valid foid card and could have rented a lane herself. They gave me the impression they did not think women were able to shoo by themself. Over all very bad experience and refused to ever shoot here again. . read more

Went there Thursday morning for the first time. The staff was courteous, no hassle and professional. The gun store and 6 lane gun range is located in the basement. Excellent experience - any review other than a 5 star are inaccurate and blatant lies. The owners and staff are friendly and professional and anyone who would say differently is a competitor or gun control advocate trying to harm their social reputation. Upon my 1st time at the location the facilitated the Illinois FOID application process saving me time and ensuring it was done properly. My second time there was during my Illinois Concealed carry class to use their range which was clean and maintained. My third time was today and I was looking to purchase a firearm and I was given many options and such time and detail was spent with me that I am of the mindset that cost isn't as important as trust and I trust HP and highly recommend. Their prices are much cheaper than another range in the area but that one is admittedly a top notch range while this one is showing its age. Small place and just noticed they now have a "NOT LEGAL" sign at entry saying "No Conceal Gun Allowed, and Weapons must be unloaded upon entry." Me personally I would travel MILES to another shop who honor our 2nd amendment rights. Also, plenty of other shops in the area which are larger and friendlier. With anti-conceal sign, and their unpleasant demeanor I won't go back. I would say if this store wants to survive in the future, I would tear up the sign and do more to bring people into your small shop. . I have been coming here for years and here is what i think. The range fees are fair, better if you come with a friend and share a lane. Definitely less expensive than any of the newer ranges in the area. It is an older facility so don't expect state of the art range equipment, this is how they keep the fees down. I don't even mind the target position crank, its kind of old school and fun. Although i wish they would improve the target holders. The staff. If you are new there and they see it, if you ask stupid questions, if you don't know why you are there and seem immature, the staff will be dicks to you. If you go in, pay for what you need and move on to the range area, you will be fine. Yes, sometimes there is a guy watching your back from behind the glass. If you act professional with what you are doing, he will not bother you. He is there to protect you from the newbies, you will thank him if he catches someone who is not being safe around you. Shop and range are adequate. Nice small shop with a few used and new firearms. Owner seems we versed in the wares and friendly. Other staff could take a page from his book as they seem to think that customers are not necessary for their business to succeed. Of course I may put more emphasis on please and thank you that others. Range is old style low light type thing but beats the heck out of cold outdoors in the snow. Ventilation could be improved and sound control is lacking. When I shoot the big bore .44 mag it is tough on the other shooters not only from sound waves but it also sends the burnt powder dust from the floor and overhead airborne for all to breath. They are in my opinion merely average but good enough if you need a fix. read more
