Having been around the block I can suss out a decent, honorable, and a cool place to hang out on my vacation from San Diego, while in Downtown. This shop - a cozy place - exceeds the mark for a contribution to the broad cigar and local communities. I ran into H&S C while on foot, on a jaunt thru the neighborhood. ::: The aromas, and visuals make this fine place subtle, yet provocative. Visiting from out of town. Looking for a cigar lounge to smoke on premises for my fiancé. The cigar shop is small & quaint with a variety of cigars. The price point is good. Draw back is you can't spoke there. It's so small that it would be uncomfortable if you were allowed to smoke. They have 3 seats & a table inside. They have a coffee machine where u can get a cup. The guy working at the cigar shop is really nice. He is from England. Recommend putting No Smoking signs on the door so you know before you come in the store. read more

This place is basically a cross section of Chicago, the US, the world. There are a number of incredibly diverse and interesting regulars, all of whom take pride in the shop, which reflects well on tourists and other customers. The cigars are also well-priced, and I've never had a dry one. Goes well with an expresso or cappuccino, which the shop also sells. There aren't many places like Hubbard & State. It's worth visiting, if not becoming a regular, if you're around. read more

Okay. Guys, purchase from the Clayton. They are respectful, knowledgeable, and are aware of how to deal with customers. Run away from Hubbard state. My wife and I thought it would be an okay late night option untiil the clerk places his hands on me for touching cigars even though I inquired about purchasing box. It is unfortunate and followed through with management to no avail. Bottom line, you want a 20-30$ cigar, go somewhere else. Cigars stale, attitude worse. read more

One of the amazing things about Ross is that he is sincere compassionate accepting and very giving to customers but extends his compassion to homeless individuals on a regular basis.He is most definitely a sincere humanitarian through his daily and continuous compassionate efforts both within and outside the shop community! Service was great and informative. Selection was pretty decent for a smaller shop. Prices seemed a little higher but i would rather get a quality smoke from a smaller business than waste my time with a turn and burn place or a place that doesn't take the care seriously. It's OK. Got an ok welcome, so can't really complain about it. It's small and tight, but dude (don't know name) let me come around corner to view the selection. Prices were fair. I live in Wisconsin so Chicago prices about 10% - 15% higher -- to be expected. Typically an ACID (Drew Estates) smoker, but dude recommended The Upsetters (Jamaica-Nicaragua). Said it was started by guy who sold Drew Estates. Smoked started out like Acid, but faded into a 'traditional' non-infused cigar. Price was right at $8, so cool, whatever. I only had an hour to kill so why not. Cigar was OK. Shop is convenient if downtown to quickly pop in and out. Would I go back? Yes. But, I'd order something else. read more

I called them and asked if they were open and the man said: "yes, for another hour". I walked 25 minutes to get there and it was locked. Their Yelp says open until 10 PM. It is only 12:27 PM. If you are going to say one hour, then don't close in less than 25 minutes. Very unprofessional. And update your Yelp listing so it's accurate. And your voicemail is full. Fix that too. I travel a lot and like to try out different cigar lounges. I enjoy Iwan Ries and Tesa. I have wanted to try something different, so I called Hubbard & State Cigar Shop to ask if they had a cigar lounge. He abruptly told me "no". When I asked him if there was one in the area, he said "there aren't any around here" and hung up. He kind of reminds me of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. Really??? What about the two that I've been to? I've made this call on two different occasions with the EXACT same result. I would gladly stop in and buy my sticks here if they are friendly and have a good selection (you can always find something that your locals don't carry). While I can't speak to their selection or decor, I can speak to their customer service. As a cigar shop, you cater to a small audience anyway. Why be rude and lie to potential customers? read more

This cigar shop located in the heart of River North will just do. Pros: Tax is already baked into the price. Most macro brands of cigars carried here. If you're lucky, they'll have some Opus X in stock. You can find Camacho Ditkas here. They have their own Rocky Patel Chicago blend. Cons: There is nowhere to sit and you can't light up a cigar in there. Boutique brands are almost wholly absent from the shop. I would liken this to going to your standard liquor store that lacks really great microbrews or are missing exceptional quality bourbon/scotch/or wine. They do carry most major brands if that is your cup of tea. If you know nothing about cigars, this place will fit the bill as they'll carry most recognizable name brands. read more

I came across the Hubbard & State Cigar Shop completely by fluke. I was looking for a light and saw there was a group of friendly folks puffing on cigars outside. Having come from dinner at Sunda, and sometimes will enjoy a nice cigar after a good meal, I decided to hop in and explore the shop. The manager, John, was very knowledgeable and thoughtful in his recommendations. What I also enjoyed was the wide variety of cigars you could choose from. After you choose your cigars of choice, there's indoor and outdoor seating available. I preferred outside seating because the location of Hubbard & State Cigar Shop is prime people-watching. Definitely try this place out if you're looking to enjoy a cigar either on the fly or want to mellow out. read more

This place always has the brands I'm looking for at an acceptable price, always has a friendly person behind the counter, and sometimes, if I'm really lucky, somebody will tell me a really funny joke on the way out. My favorite place to buy cigars - whoever is behind the counter is always pleasant and knowledgeable. I love the small cigars in tins and always come in to see what new ones they have. This cigar shop has an old-school feel totally befitting the vibe of downtown Chicago! Its got about as much style as a corner liquor store but its definitely got a lot of character! We walked in, eagerly (for some reason, my/our craving for stogies kicks in when we've got liquor on the mind... its just natural, yes?)... This store is actually very small. Well, to tell the truth, its not that small but most of the storespace is occupied by inventory and humidors. There were four guys inside smoking away, which made for a kind of homey, but cramped, environment. And yes, like in Fred F's review, the counters were adorned with empty and half-empty bottles of liquor. I thought it was amusingly appropriate... Cost wise, i'm not sure. Good selection and reasonable prices - even for being in downtown Chicago. It would be easy to walk by this single window store front on Hubbard and never know that a great tobacconist was so close. With several hundred cigar options as well as decent pipe and smokeless tobacco offerings Hubbard Cigar is a great option if you are in the neighborhood. They also include the 47% tax in their list prices, and yet cigars here are cheaper than the pre-tax prices of some bigger shops such as Blue Havana or Iwan Ryes. They used to have sidewalk seating and allowed smoking in the store, but unfortunately both of those options are no longer available, so if you want something to go this is your spot. read more

I was walking by this cigar shop and what an inviting atmosphere it appeared to be! People were outside, one guy even had his big dog...and they were talking and smoking some very flavorful stogies.... As I walked inside to act on my urge to have a puff, I couldn't believe what I was seeing! It was like I walked into a mad frat-house, TV was so loud you couldn't hear yourself talk- and the beer and whiskey bottles I saw made me wonder if this was a cigar shop or some kind of re-enactment of Animal House starring John Belushi! There had to be at least 15 people in there- taking up the size of a very small 9 x 6 space. The guy working behind the counter had his feet UP ON THE COUNTER and was too busy talking on the phone to address me and my shopping inquiry. He finally came over to the end of the counter after about 5 minutes of me just standing there, looking in the cigar cabinets. He asked me what I would like and not being a regular smoker I said, "What do you suggest?" He said the top cigar was this Padron limited edition with some year on it, I doubt it was made that far back...anyways it was well over $15 and I felt he really didn't know what he was giving me, only that it was one of the more expensive cigars in that shop. It's a little crowded in there, but the attendant is very helpful. The stock is much much more than what you see in the display cases, so it is worth asking for your favorites. They know their cigars, and they keep them fresh. They have sampler packs too. read more

I only stopped in here quickly for the espresso. The espresso was really good. Strong. Little particles of coffee left over in the cup (that's how you know it's good ) I don't love the smoking in there. I don't think I would stop in this place for espresso before going out. It really smells very strong of cigar smoke. I don't think any amount of perfume could cover the scent in your hair. But if I were a smoker, I'm sure I'd love it. read more

This place isn't for lingering but it does offer a great selection of a great selection of cigars to enjoy elsewhere. And along those lines - 300 feet down Hubbard Street is Sullivan's Steakhouse where you are welcomed with open arms to sit on the sidewalk patio and puff away. With tumblers and stogies in hand it was the perfect way to end a summer night with a few pals that were visiting from out of town. A big disappointment. An example of what a cigar shop should not be. All cigars are behind the counter and cannot be accessed by the customer to check for quality. A big turn off when buying a $30+ cigar. The clerk working was not accommodating in offering different cigars when asked nor did he have knowledge on what type of flavor of cigar.
