He was super nice and I was recently an accident and I messed up my hands and he helped me with setting up everything and how to do knots I really appreciate it and I learned a bunch. I was visiting from Nevada (originally from Hawaii, so I'm a lifelong fisherman), and since we were going on a road trip to Anaheim, I decided to check out a fishing store. I jumped on Yelp, started searching, and found Taka's Bait and Tackle, and they had great reviews! I still fish regularly at Lake Mead for Striped Bass, and in Arizona and Nevada for trout, and I'm in the market for a new trout pole. Taka's is located in a small strip mall and was easy to find. Parked right outside and walked in. There was one customer there and was talking to, I would guess, one of the store owners. I browsed around the entire store and really did not find what I was looking for. As I walked around, the two men were still talking. I waited a bit, and they were still just talking and talking. I guess I could go up and interrupt their conversation, but I decided to walk out instead. So, from the time I walked in, I walked around the store, browsed quite a bit of different things, basically walking around the entire store a couple of times, I wasn't even acknowledged or even looked at. I'm sure their conversation must have been intense, but hey, at least say "hi" to your customers. So yes, I'm still looking for a new fishing pole. read more

HANDS DOWN THE BEST SMALL TACKLE STORE IN MY AREA!! I purchased my first salt water rod and reel from this place and that was in 2017! I walked in with a little bit of money and they helped me get geared up on my first boat trip in years..fast forward til now, with more experience, and more tackle, I still stop by and check in with this place! they might not have a ton of selection like the big store brands with the green fish logo, but with the amount of knowledge, experience and honesty they have, that's more in value than you'll find anywhere else . You won't have to worry about asking a question and them being clueless what fluorocarbon is. I'm always impressed how well Steve assists you with any questions or concerns you might have based on your trip or type of fishing you're trying to accomplish..the thing I really appreciate about this place, Steve will never try to upsell you or sell you something if he feels like you don't need it! If you don't know certain knots, he will be glad to show you and let you record it so you'll have it in your phone and have it on you incase you forget. After having several issues with other shops when it comes to re-spooling my reels due to poor connection knots, I only trust this shop with servicing my reels and changing my line from here on out. Don't be affraid to ask questions when you're there! Because of their tips and advice, I've become a better angler, and to me That type of experience honesty and helpfulness from this shop Is worth more than any dollar amount spent anywhere else. Whether it's a 1.5 day for rockfish, a 5-day to Cedros for the giant homeguard yellowtail, or a 10-day trip down south for the giant yellowfin tuna, Taka will set you up just right. Not only will he walk through his endless supply of graphite and glass Calstar blanks with you, he'll let you pull on each one while he mimics the fish on the other end, and tells you to push the blanks "to the limit," almost lifting him off of the ground in the process. He found me three amazing blanks (one of them unheard of in most circles) and built the most beautiful rods out of them. Taka Tanaka is a sportfishing legend and a genius when it comes to helping you pick out exactly what you're going to need for your trip(s). His wife Katy is extremely kind, and is very involved in the family business. The other guy that works there (forgot his name - sorry!) who also helps with wrapping the rods as well is also top-notch. I haven't been in to see Taka and Katy in a while now (almost a year), but I know that when I do, we will pick up just where we left off and talk shop while I pick through his great selection. The shop is a staple to saltwater sportfishing enthusiasts, as is Taka and his reputation. As a kid I used to walk to the shop and spend a half-hour looking at all the cool stuff I could not afford at the time... daydreaming of life on the high seas. He also runs a 15-18 day charter I think on the Royal Polaris once a year in September, where they come back with yellowfin as big as my Cadillac... if you're interested, have the time, money, and sea-legs, definitely jump aboard for a great adventure! read more

Went in today to buy some egg glow in the dark sinker and flourocarbon. The man open the door exactly at 9am. Great!! Hes on time. Enter the door and he ask what i need and showed me exactly where they're at then he ask me which boat am i going on? I said Aztec for big bluefin. He ask me which knott am i using and i said fg knott but he recommended me using rb knott when on the boat. At first i have a little dpunt but he tie that knott in front of me within 10-15 seconds hes done and showed me the strenth test. Incredible. I didntbreak at the knott. Great place to ask for advice because he used to run a boat with tons of knowledge. Thanks Here is an update. I've been coming here for the past 3.5 years to service my reel every single year even when my reel doesnt need it i still come in for service. 3.5 weeks ago i went to to service 3 of my reel. 2 shimano and 1 daiwa. The guy in there told me the person that service the reel had a back problem and hes out for a few days so hes a little behind on the reels service. Its understandable so i ask them if i leave my reel here will it be done in 2 weeks which is a long time i gave them and the man said yes. I comfortably left my reel there. 2 weeks later i called they said they're not done which makes me kinda mad because its been 2 weeks like they promised. The guy said give him another week. What!!!!!!!!? Seriously? Another week? Another week passed by and i called again he said again hes not done and hes behind. Im extremely mad now and he ask me to give him 2 more days. Tuesday night hes done and didnt even call me to let me know. Anyways i picked up the reel. Paid $55 totals he didnt change any bearings inside at all he said. In his own words he told me those bearings will last me 1 more year. Brought it home and realize when my shimano trinidad the free spool havent even fixed because its still feels like something is stopping the free spool. I compare to all my other reels and the trinidad he serviced is the worst when its supposed to be the Best free spool reel. I called and ask them can they check it again and the lady ask me to bring it in then i did bring it in when its open in the morni g. the guy service my reel look at it and said he serviced it already and told me again the bearing will last me another. I brought in my talica and trinidad to compare the free spool and the trinidad stop spinning like 20sec before my talica which is in heard of. He kept telling me my reel is fine. At this point in my head i believe he never even open that reel. He simply put a tape on it and charge me for it because he returned the reel like how i gave it to him. Never been serviced but charged me for it. I also compare 2 of my friends trinidad with mine and both of my friends said they never serviced my reel. Im writing this review because who ever wants to servixe their reel should bring it elsewhere. Beware! Updating review: I been to everywhere and i must say this is the best place so far. The lady in there is very friendly. Last time she helped me choosing a LC lures and i caught 2 halibut. Thank you! read more

The folks here are so awesome!! They are so patient in explaining things to a newb angler like me and even take the time to show me how to cast and fish correctly. Super honest and straightforward folks. I brought in a reluctant reel (it wouldn't spin well) to be fixed and when they found a piece of line inside the reel that was the issue, they didn't even charge me and pretend they "fixed" it. Best place ever. I've been to tackle stores from LA to San Diego and this place is the best for advice and knowledge. I didn't say "friendly advice because they will say it as it is. I. Some in to spool a cedros LD20 with 130# spectra and they said no because I was going for big bluefin and his reel will kill me. Instead, they told me what reel to buy and what rod to match it with. They told me how to use the rail and when to use low/high gear. They didn't want to take my money because they knew I would struggle with my current setup If you are looking for a large assortment of Phenix, rainshadow, seeker, and shimano gear... they don't have it. They have the hooks you need, the line you need, and the tips on what you need to buy to land the fish you are targeting. I'm always there for owner and gamakatsu hooks along with fluoro, mono, and spectra. I find myself. Moving back even when I know they don't have the rod that I need... because I know they will point me in the right direction. And I always keep coming back for help with knots, rigging, and the current Intel. Definitely a place to stop by if you want to talk fishing. read more

As someone who only had minor experience in pier fishing in the Midwest, I walked in to Takas with a lot of questions, little experience, and major mistakes with my current rod and reel setup. Needless to say, I left with much more knowledge than I entered with. Steve, and his mother went above and beyond to make sure that I paired the right rod and reel combo together, took the time to re-spool my reel, and showed me how to tie a few important knots so that I could get out on the water and fish that same day. My son and I went in here as newbies and when you walk in, it was pretty overwhelming seeing some of the things they had. Not knowing any idea of what we needed we walked to the gentleman at the counter, we explained that we had no idea of what we were doing. Instead of trying to sell us everything in the place, he asked where we were going, what our goal was and when we were going. He recommended a few things and then took the time to pull my son aside and show him how to set up everything he recommended, it was only about $15 worth of stuff, but he made us feel like we spent thousands. My son had a great time and now knows how to tie better knots and probably catch fish better than I do. Thank you Mr. Taka! Today I discovered Taka's Bait and Tackle (TBT). I am just starting to surf fish and by chance found TBT on Yelp. I visited the store, talked to Steve, and told him of my nubie level as a surf fisherman, though I am an very experienced fly fisherman. I shared my thoughts on the setup of the rig for perch and other species as I understood it. I found Steve to be patient, concise, without ego, and not the least bit condescending. Those are significant pluses to me and gave me the assurance that I had come to the right place. All too many times while visiting fly fishing shops I've had to endure boring tales from self-absorbed salesmen. I got none of that from Steve.
