I have been natural for about 2 years so when it comes to my hair, I need a stylist who understands how to manage it. When researching different natural hair salons in my area, I couldn't find a single one that specialized in natural hair care. I literally drove from Milwaukee to Chicago to get my hair washed, trimmed, and styled at Huetiful Salon. My experience was wonderful and the drive was definitely worth it! My stylist, Shawanna was great. We talked about hair care and she was open to answer my questions about daily hair routines. The salon is also very organized and welcoming. I had visited this salon for the first time on Saturday, November 4, 2017. I was in search of a salon who specializes in the health and maintenance of black natural hair. During my visit, I had experienced great customer service from the receptionist. In addition, Sterling was great as he had provided tips on how to maintain healthy natural hair. Sterling had also explained to me the products that he was using and how they benefit natural hair. My hairstyle was fine. The issue which moved my rating to three stars is the double-booking. I am unsure if double-booking is the salon's or hairstylist's policy, but it is not a great idea. As a client, I do not like for any hairstylist to rush back and forth between me and another client. The idea is good, and I think this place was initially better than it is now. Been there a handful of times, and the service isn't as good. Always get there on time and end up waiting about 15 mins to get started; I've had times when they forgot about me in the dryer or steamer. The worst was having a stylist who openly admitted they've never done a simple updo- pull my hair to the middle of the head and wrap extensions around it). I have 4C hair that shrinks ALOT, which I told her about, and suggested we straighten my hair first coz it wasn't long enough to pull to the middle of my head, but she insisted we didn't need to. She later seemed surprised by how much my hair shrunk, but still insisted we didn't need to straighten it, thought she knew something I didn't, so I figured okay. She smeared a ton of gel and started pulling and brushing my wet hair, something I would think anyone who knows hair 101 knows not to do, so I pulled away and asked her to stop. She kept me in the dryer for ages, of course coz I had a ton of gel on my hair. By the end of it all, it was obvious she had no idea how to do anything, including braiding/twisting the extensions neatly. She placed one roll of the extension and said she was done...imagine my horror! I told her I obviously needed more, she added one more and said she was done. I kept asking her to add more coz at that point all I had on my head were two tinny extensions-half a pack of hair. The style didn't compliment my face AT ALL, but by that time, I was done coz she obviously wasn't going to get any better at it, and I just figured I would do a better job myself at home-I am NOT good at doing hair, which is why I went there to begin with, so you can imagine how bad this must have been for me to resort to that. I had an event to attend on the following day, so didn't have a choice. I took the hair down right after the event. I've been back a few more times for basic styles, but now looking for a new place. That particular stylists always seems to be open when I try booking appointments, so I just avoid her, not that the rest were much better. read more

I have been contemplating big chopping my hair to remove heat and color damage and finally got the courage to just do it. I was nervous and before confirming my appointment, Marina called me - on her day off by the way - and talked to me for at least 30 minutes about what I wanted. She was so comforting, compassionate, and encouraging during the entire experience. I could not be happier with my decision. I write this review with a HEAVY heart. Not because I didn't experience the most wonderful hair transformation, but because I don't want more people to go and make it EVEN harder for me to get a hair appointment. **caution it's a LONG review, because I feel it's needed, feel free to jump to the bottom** As I continue to progress on my hair (natural) journey, I find that until natural becomes critical mass or people understand different textures of hair, it is critical for you to find someone who understands your tresses. I think Huetiful has really got a gift for education. So let's begin. Appointment: You HAVE to book online. Once you get the hang of it, making an appointment is easy. It's hard to start out. When you select a stylist, you are presented with "selections" (i.e. style 1, style 2) but you do not get a description of what that is. On a separate page, you are given a rundown on what is included in those styles. Also, be sure to have a credit card on hand to book your appointment. I repeat, you must book online. Location: The salon space is a renovated home in the Bronzeville community. First time there, you do have to do some looking and then you hesistate when you think you found it because it a random location with limited signage. Look for the shears or the Chicago Public Libary. If you pass it, you've gone too far. The sheers will take you to the transformation heaven. You are greeted with a smile when you enter. The salon is modern, fresh feeling, and clean. I mean THIS is how you should spend your time being pampered. It really is like a hidden oasis. Each stylist station provides a level of privacy yet the space is still open, which is a nice touch. They have fun, feel good music, piping overhead. The Experience: The best I've had in a very long time. Definitely the best I've had as a natural and it's been almost 3 years. So I booked with Nina Christmas, she started in their Atlanta location in 2012 and I see she has been a force ever since. When I sat down I gave her the lowdown on my tresses. I was at the point of thinking of cutting it all off because it was just TOO much. She took me to the bowl and that is where the education by science began to happen. She gave me a mirror and literally explained everything she was going. She debunked a lot of myths and said their salon is ultimately trying to shift the paradigm about natural hair. She explained a lot of times, our hair is "unruly" because we are using the right products or the right methods. As she selected products, she let me take work a small section into my head. When she detangled, I watched in my mirror. It was the first time that I was detangled and I didn't coil back up. It was like NEW hair! OMGosh. Now for some people, they don't want to talk to their stylist, I was there to learn and absorb. She definitely gauges if you are a talker or not. My hair was SOOO soft during shampoo, I couldn't believe it. I mean we detangled during shampoo, who does that?! I guess I will be now. Then came the condition, hair is still soft and tresses are still not coiled. We make our way to the infamous steamer to add and seal the moisture. If's a fascinating little gadget, but my hair felt really good. We rinsed the conditioner and were ready for styling. Soo I appreciated Nina because she again told me everything was happening. She used a lower setting to blow dry it (no burned follicles here) and then we flat ironed it. This was my first experience with a stylist telling me that we would start at a low temperature and work our way up if my hair did not respond. It ensured my tresses only used enough of what they needed which leads to health in the long-run. We looked at my ends.. had a discussion about the trim and we were off. So final touches.. because my appointment was running over and someone else's appointment was starting, she politely told me that she wanted to get her next appointment up and running and she would be back. That's true professionalism. When she returned, we were ready to curl my hair. I thought this was going to take FO EVA.. but her technique was QUICk and I was fabulous looking.. because it was a monsoon outside, she put my hair in these pin curls, but said.. you need to be able to wear them. We can't have you looking crazy. It's day two and I'm still rocking the pin curls with soo many compliments. Bonus: She said that all her stylists were fantastic and they all had a different specialty. She said at any time feel free to check them out for wash n gos, rod sets etc. We work as a team. I went to Huetiful Salon out of desperation. We were taking family holiday pictures and both my regular hairstylist and my regular back up stylist were unavailable. I do not typically try new hair salons unless they have been recommended to me by trusted friends, but the reviews I read on Yelp made me think that Huetiful would be a good choice. The experience overall was pleasant. The stylist was very nice, and the salon was clean and well cared for. However, to say that I was extremely disappointed with the results would be an understatement. While my hair looked fine when I left the salon, as I got outside I noticed that my hair smelled burnt. So much so, that a checkout girl at the store I stopped at commented, "What's burning?". Um, that would be my hair. Over the next week, I noticed a large number of strands falling out of my hair when I combed or brushed it. Alarmed, I went to my regular stylist. Sure enough, she found a large section of my hair had been burned so badly that the hairs were breaking off and falling out. I currently have an area about 1.5-2 inches in diameter where my hair is completely broken off, fuzz patch city. Thanks to my visit to Huetiful, I now have to rock a combover until the hair grows back. Needless to say, I won't be returning. read more

I was really looking forward to getting my hair done at Huetiful after reading the reviews. Unfortunately, when I got to the salon I was politely turned away. Warning to new clients, there are no signs in front of the salon which makes finding it a bit challenging and they turn the phones off after a certain time (maybe 5pm) so no one is able to assist you via phone after that time. I found this out the hard way after searching for the salon for about 10 minutes, all the while, tugging on several locked doors that I thought could be the entrance. After finally arriving 20 minutes behind schedule I was told there is a 15 minutes grace period and no one was available to do my hair. What? I wish someone would have told me that earlier when I called to confirm my appointment and explained to the women on the phone that I had never been to the salon before. Long story short, I was not able to get my hair done. The stylist did say she could reschedule my appointment for another day, which I was considering until she said, "and we won't even charge you for this missed appointment, which we usually do". Really? No thanks. Tip for the owner: I understand your 15 minute grace period rule, but you might want to think about keeping the phones on until you close for the day or placing a sign out front so new clients can locate your business. I really wanted to like Huetiful but I was very disappointed with the way my hair looked and felt after it was finished. I'm giving Huetiful 2 stars: one because my stylist, Ashley, is a very nice person, she was professional and she took me on time and finished my hair within the 90 minute allotted for my services. The second star I'll give because the salon is nice and it's clean. So, about my experience...first the shampoo...I was fine with the two shampoos- one to clarify and the other to moisturize the hair. While I cringed as Ashley used what felt like a brush (that seemed to be pulling out my hair) to get rid of any shed hairs, I dealt with it although I really should have explained to her that I had already detangled and removed the shed hairs from my head. That was my fault. I should have said somehow then. I'll admit, I do baby my hair to minimize damage and breakage and I guess I expected that people working with natural hair in a salon that claims expertise with natural hair would do the same. Second, I was okay with the conditioning masque and the 30 minutes I spent under the steamer and I really looked forward to feeling the softness of my lush, well-conditioned hair. Unfortunately, that never happened, because when the conditioner was rinsed out of my hair my hair felt rough and dry. It was very tangled when normally after being conditioned, my hair is easily combed through. Not this time. So Ashley proceeded to comb through my rough, dry, tangled hair using a method that I would never expect an expert in natural hair to use-detangling from the roots down! Now we come to the styling part. So, I simply wanted two French braids. Ashley used some kind of setting lotion/ serum combination that made my hair go from bad to worse! My hair was sticky, rough, dry, and a tangled mess all at the same time! At this point what I should have done was to get up, put my hair in a ponytail, go home and re-wash/re-condition it but I didn't do that. I knew I'd be in trouble if I allowed Ashley to blow dry my hair in the state it was in before braiding it, so I asked her to braid it wet. During the braiding process, Ashley was very nice and patient with me when I asked her to redo the first braid because I decided I'd rather have my hair parted differently. Although Ashley is a good braider and she's neat, she did not braid my hair the way I explained I wanted it braided. But that was something I could live with. What I had the most difficult time dealing with was the fact that today, 3 days after my visit to Huetiful, my hair was in a sad state. It was still extremely tangled and feeling very dry and rough and (and honestly, that makes me wonder what the real deal is with their product line). I was able to get some of the tangles out after almost 45 mortifying minutes of spraying water and detangler, and alternating between finger and wide-tooth combing. However, after a simple co-washing did not bring back softness or eliminate all tangles, I was left with no other choice but to shampoo and condition it. $65 plus tip gone down the drain! Finally, after all of this, my hair feels much better now and so do I! It has been said that experience is the best teacher and I have learned my lesson well! I really wanted to like this place because I believed all that it was hyped up to be. There's probably no need for me to say this but I will not return to Huetiful again for any service, not even if it's offered for free. read more

Huetiful Salon is INCREDIBLE!! I haven't straightened my hair in 3 years, so I was very nervous and apprehensive coming in. I also am not from Chicago, and this was my first time visiting Huetiful. They paid so much attention to my natural hair, explained each product and step to ensure I was comfortable and knowledgeable about the products they were using, and they specialize in making sure your curls are protected even with heat. ***writing this as I sit under a dryer waiting on a different stylist**** long... Sorry!!! I've been natural for 4 years and remain very selective on who does my hair. I moved back home, Chicago, and wanted to find a natural hair stylist. My mother pushed me to try out Heutiful. With there being so many mixed reviews on their social media I was hesitant. I finally decided to go the Friday before my Master's graduation. I arrive 15 minutes early and was told my stylist would get to me. 1:20 comes and still nothing. Then a lady comes up and asks me who I am waiting on... She comes back a few minutes later to let me know a different young lady will wash my hair and get me started... Not unusual but has me a little confused. As she completes my wash, my stylist Shawanna comes rushing past talking with the woman who washed my hair. She tells me sorry for the delay and that she needs to step out for a moment. Now I continue to wait. Mind you this is my first time. In addition, the style I want is a twist out which is 120. A lot of money to pay when you are already weary. I go to the steam and sit there for about 40mins. The hair wisher said it would be 20mins. Now I'm contemplating my exit. I'm not happy. Shawanna then arrives and washed out the conditioner. She asks me if this is my first time. Yes! Then she asks if I filled out a survey... No and the person up front didn't get me that information. She says it's no issue and asks me what I am getting. I say twist out/small. She says, "you want small/tiny" I say, yes. We go to her chair and she starts to trim and braid my hair.... At this point I just sit there because I'm over it. She takes about 15mins on the Twist braids (14 to count). Puts me in the dryer, packs up, cleans her station and says, she needs to leave. Really? Why schedule an appointment when you know this will take time? Why not give me a heads up before I get here? They want you to be timely but they aren't? I'm so frustrated. She tells me her son is ,too, graduating from K-8 so she needs to get him ready? I'm certain this isn't the first time she kneLw this! She tells me another stylist will braid out my hair I didn't even hear what the lady name was! She shakes my hand and tells me to come back to see her... are you kidding me! Absolutely not! Not even a maybe, I will not be back! I will NOT RECOMMEND Heutiful TO ANYONE I KNOW! The second stylist, who I didn't know, came once I was done drying after 20mins because she was told I was put under longer. I had to ask another young lady if she knew who was helping me. I spent all of my 3hrs here seeing her 15-20mins. I'm disappointed. I wish someone communicated with me so I was prepared and could make a decision for myself. I splurged to look great for something I worked hard to get and I got D- service. One grade off a F because the shampoo girl was very kind and my hair wasn't horrible. Got there at 12:45 and left at 4:32. I gave a 15 dollar tip ( planned to give more) only for the shampoo lady and my ending stylist. The two of them were very professional! They gave me great ideas and feedback. However, I will be back on the market finding a good stylist for natural and healthy hair. read more

Obviously, I had to cancel. Not only was I treated with no compassion for my circumstance, I was lied to, hung up on (twice) and charged for 80% of the services I booked. I completely understand the 50% cancellation policy and would have gotten over my poor fortune but the treatment I received over the phone was beyond rude. The salon manager said she would call back to fix the overcharge but never did. I will never go there again and neither will any of my Chicago friends. She even let me feel the product that she was putting on my hair. I decided to give Huetiful a try after searching online for a few days for natural hair salons in chicago. It was a toss up because of the mixed reviews that Huetiful has received. But my oh my and i ecstatic with the results. I had just came out of doing my own micro braids for 3 years and before that my hair was very short. I got the braids out and set up an appointment online immediately. I was in there by 3pm on a thursday. I got the nano smoothing treatment. My hair has never been so silky smooth and bouncy. It looked so healthy too! i will definitely be going back. If you go. The salon is nice, my appointment started a little early, but $105 and nearly 4hrs later and I wasn't happy at all with the results. I chose style option #3 and the normal hydrating treatment, a pretty standard roller set on my medium length/short hair. Not sure what went wrong but I wound up with a very tight rod set that was not cute. There's nothing worse than dropping money like that at a salon and leaving with a hood on. Also, my hair is dry, probably due to the amount of setting lotion that was used. So much for the miracle steaming everyone raves about. I'm hoping once I wash my hair it will feel better. Not planning on returning, a shame since I did so much research on this place before booking. read more

This was my first time at Huetiful and I liked the place right off the bat. Easy street parking right in front, climb a few steps to the grey stone, ring the bell and you're in Huetiful Salon! The space is gorgeous inside! I can't say enough about it. It feels like a combination of a spa/loft space/studio/fabulous Bronzeville grey stone. It's very spacious yet everything is in its place, there's not a lot of clutter lying around like you might see at other salons. Bright, clean and serene. I was a few minutes late when I arrived but it wasn't a problem because my stylist Shawanna was still with a client. I did not mind this a bit because it gave me time to settle in, have a drink (they offer, h20, coffee & hot tea) and check the place out. I will say, I didn't necessarily book with Shawanna for a cut but instead for the Heutiful steam treatment the salon provides. My scalp was in need of some TLC after this harsh winter weather...but my ends also needed a trim. Shawanna talked to me about concerns I had with my hair and scalp and explained some natural home treatments I might try at home such as a mixture of lemon juice, your fave oil and warm water. Dab that on the scalp to get rid of flakes and dryness. Let it sit for 10 mins and rinse. After some educating and a wash she put me under a steam treatment contraption. For about 20 minutes a luxurious,warm mist enveloped my head while I thumbed through a mag. Next, I told Shawanna that I just wanted to trim my layers and get some side swept (what she called "deep bangs" I like her description better anyway) bangs. She blow dried my hair first then trimmed it dry. I really liked that she did this because I think it produces a more precise cut. I could be wrong but it's what I like! After the blow dry and trim I don't know what she did. I was too relaxed thumbing through the mag and listening to the music. All I know is she spun the chair around and asked me to take a look in the mirror and what I saw was a vision! Simply beautiful! I have an angled bob, deep/side swept bangs and she finished off with somewhat of a curl which I loved because it gave my layers a feathered effect and really gave it dimension and movement. This is such a hidden gem. I really hope word gets out about Huetiful Salon so it continues to be successful for years to come. Finally, I came for the steam treatment and because frankly I was tired of going to salons and being underwhelmed by my experience and my cuts. I'm Puerto Rican and my hair texture is semi-course, thick and wavy. I was looking for a salon with a stylish, inviting vibe where the stylist wouldn't be intimidated by my hair. 75 dollars for a hairstyle that lasted 2 days... This all started with me needing a nice trimmed style and a silk press for my natural hair. I wanted a silk press so that I can just wrap my hair up every night while going to work. It took me an hour to explain this to BREE the worst kind of receptionist. Almost missed apt because she told me to be there at 730 instead of 8am. Had to relate my phone number 5 times. And when I went to get my hair done saw her using the salon supplies to do her own hair. STERLING did my hair, but it seems hes.more into being liked by his contact workers than for his clients to be satisfied with how work. He washed my hair and placed me under the steamer, little did I know he left me in the salon so he could go grab some coffee for him and his colleagues (Why didn't he value me as his customer, while everyone else working that morning stayed attentive to who was in there chair...I still don't know), anywho, had to get my hair steamed twice I'M FINALLY GETTING STYLED AND HE BURNS ME 3 TIMES WITH HIS FLAT IRONS TO THE POINT THE OTHER STYLISTS BEGAN TO JOKE ABOUT IT. HE SIMPLY WAS NOT FOCUSED AND DID NOT CARE I didn't even like how he styled my hair as he claimed my hair was too long, but he had an inch he could have cut off to fit the style I wanted but he instead barely brushed my ends once he pressed my hair out on top of using hair spray and all I wanted was an even bob. I will say, they were nice.....but that's it All I know is, I won't be back. I can buy a steamer and do my hair for 75 dollars. So unfortunate. This was my first experience at Huetiful. I wish I could have given 3 1/2 stars, but the site won't let me. I went in for a color (with about 1 1/2" of new growth) after having a consultation. I had been coloring my own hair (since '09), but decided to try professional services so that I could get better, even-looking results while wearing a lighter color ( I have been wearing a lighter color for over a year now). As for style, I opted for a wash & go. I was not fully confident in getting anything else because I've never had my hair "done" by anybody else as a natural. I've always done it myself. At first, I was not really enthused with the results for two reasons: my roots appeared to be way darker than the rest of my hair and my wash & go was a wash & 'fro by the time I got back home (within 40 min. of leaving the salon). The stylist used the Deva Curl line on my hair...that was a first as well. But when I got home I began to like the color better! (My bathroom has great lighting!) Anything lighter would have made my roots look washed out. So, I definitely will be back for a color touch-up, with me taking my own product. Staff: Friendly, Laid-back, Knowledgeable Establishment: Clean, a little dark for my taste in the styling area though Ambience: Quiet, Comfortable Parking: Great for early morning Booking: A little tricky for a first-timer. You won't be certain about which stylist is best for you...unless they were recommended by someone. I had an appointment with Tasheara for a color and flat twists. I wasn't 100% satisfied (although the color was great) and decided to call the next day for some feedback. Tasheara reached out to me and allowed me to come back for another style. That appointment was yesterday, it was a great experience and i left soo happy. She flat ironed and trimmed my hair. I got so many compliments. After my first appointment i wasnt sure the salon was a great fit but after yesterday, i will def be back for my next flat iron with Tasheara! This was my first experience at the Huetiful Salon. I'm very particular about my hair and the entire salon experience. I was hesitant...because I hadn't talked to anyone who had previously went to the salon. However, I was cheerfully greeted at the door and once I expressed my "curly" hair concerns to Shawanna, I felt more at ease. I love everything that's included with the service and felt like I'd finally found a place that cares about my natural hair and how to take care of my natural hair. The steamer - bomb! Shawanna was easy to talk to and made me feel like my hair isn't a "problem", but gave me tips on what's needed! The style was so cute and I got compliments for the next 2 days! The only thing I would have wished for is to have an additional - 2-3 times is typically what I like. I also liked how all the stylist appeared to get along with each other and were there to help each other. If something was needed, they all worked together and shared. That says a lot about how positive the atmosphere and work environment is in the salon. For me, that's important. AND no waiting. Once I got there, I was ready to be serviced! LOVE THAT. DO NOT BOOK WITH MICHELLE CARTER. I booked with her and she is a no show. She will call you with a sorry excuse then reschedule you and say she will send you a reconfirmation text but doesn't. I showed up to my rescheduled date and sat there for 30 + mins waiting for her. I drove 45-50 mins to this appointment to be missed twice. I will say overtime the service has gotten a bit worse especially at the blowout bar (mostly during the shampoo session, I felt like she was ripping my hair out because she combed it out while it was DRY, she didn't seem to know how to detangle hair) but the stylist I end up with is always pretty good. I have been calling for the last week and a half trying to book an appointment for an event I had coming up and no one ever answered. I did this because I was noticing some lack of availability with the slots online and figured I'd just call and make an appointment (I've had to do this before and ended up getting an appointment even though that same time slot was unavailable onlilne). I literally called up until the day before the event (all day) and FINALLY got someone on the phone and of course there were no openings left for the next day which was a Tuesday. I guess I'm just confused because every time I come here there are always one to two people at the front desk so why is no one answering the phone here? Management might want to look into it. read more

When you can get the right stylist, Huetiful is awesome! One of the best stylist is Charita. She takes time to understand your requests, your hair texture, etc. The only reason why I won't rate it higher, is because you might get that one stylist that is either new or doesn't understand your hair texture and therefore, will not listen to your suggestions on what's best for your hair. Also, the prices are pretty high, in my opinion. Also, I typically go for the silk blow-out, so I can only speak on that specific hairstyle. Although I have been natural for almost 10 years now, I rather due my own natural hair for free. Maybe if the natural hairstyles were cheaper, I would try it out. read more

I had a really great experience at Huetiful. I have very high expectations when it comes to my hair and I have been utterly disappointed with the other Chicago salons that I have visited since moving here (I won't name them). NINA is amazing. The salon is amazing. It has an upscale feel, with affordable prices. A few things I appreciate: (1) They do NOT double book -- meaning if your time is valuable to you, you will not be sitting around for hours waiting for your stylist; (2) they obviously specialize in healthy hair; (3) every treatment comes with the steamer and a free trim!!! - That's just unheard of; and (4) everyone is super friendly. These are my observations only having been to the shop once and my appointment was at 7:30am. But I will definitely be back! read more

My stylist, Nicole, was professional and patient! I love the look of the salon, too. She took her time with my hair and corrected my old hair color (and also covered my stubborn gray) quite well. My hair is thick, shoulder length, takes in a LOT of product and it came out beautiful ly! She blew my hair out without applying the heat to my scalp and flat ironed it the best it's ever been flat ironed! She explained the costs, the color process and gave me recommendations through out my service based on the condition of my hair. She was also very aware of the time and didn't take unnecessary breaks or phone calls. I'm looking forward to my next appointment! read more

This was my first time at Huetiful, and I'm sold. The salon is just what I was searching for. It's upscale, calming, and the stylists care about healthy hair. My goal for this visit was to get a drastic haircut - a tapered hair cut - and I really needed to find a stylist that I trusted to design a chic, funky style. My stylist was Shawanna who seems very professional and friendly. Oh, and she knows what she is doing. My new haircut is so fun! It's exactly what I had in mind, except better. (I brought in a Pinterest picture for guidance. She got the idea and rolled with it). When styling, I liked that she told me what products she was using and why. It put me at ease and I appreciated the communication. For my final style, I chose flat iron, which turned out silky and has lasted several days now. Next time i see Shawanna, I'd like to try a non-straightening natural hair style, and I'll update after that experience. All the Huetiful stylists care about natural hair, so I'd feel safe and assured in making an appointment with any of them. That said, I believe all stylists have their specialities, and I wish the Huetiful website promoted those more prominently. For example, I feel that some are better at natural hair styles while others are better at straightening natural hair. Some have a passion for and are skilled at creative haircuts and others are more colorists. It's just odd to think that every stylist is a jill-of-all-trades. When making your first appointment, I'd suggest calling the salon to get recommendations on who could best fit your needs. Hopefully you get a candid response. First I want to say that I hate that I am writing this review. I really wanted to like this place, especially because it is black owned, but that was not the case. I will start by saying that I really like my stylist Sterling. He was super nice and we had fun conversation while I was there. I bet he is great at other services that he provides, and he is the only reason Huetiful gets two stars from me instead of one. I went to Huetiful a little over a week ago for a twistout. My friend has gone to Huetiful mutliple times and told me I really need to try it now that I am natural. I typically go to this white salon by my house and I see the only black stylist there. I have been very happy with her work, but I wanted to try this place and support black businesses. Well that was a mistake. I walk in and I tell the lady at the front desk my name and appointment time. She tells me ok and that Sterling will be right with me. Now, this is my first time here, she did not tell me to take a seat, she didn't tell me where I could put my coat, she didn't offer me water. Fine. I sit down super excited thinking I am about to have the best hair ever after this. Well my appointment was at 630 and I check my phone and it was not 640. I text my friend that normally comes here and I was like "I thought they didn't double book?" She tells me that typically they are prompt, but each time her stylist was late they usually texted her and apologized or came from the back and would say it would be a few minutes. Well I did not get that. She then told me to just sit back and enjoy my wine. I was like wine?! The lady did not offer me that or take my coat. When I say my friend was shocked, she was SHOCKED. She said that never happens to her. She said that is barely in the door before they are taking her coat and offering her things. Fine. At about 652 Sterling comes from the back and he begins talking to another client that walked in asking for a haircut. He clearly was in the wrong place, but Sterling was going to be nice and squeeze him in while I was under the dryer, again, I thought you guys did not double book. Luckily, the guy never came back. Sterling comes over to me and leads me to the back, like I said I loved Sterling he was very nice, but an apology would have been wonderful or maybe even explaining why you were late bringing me back. Anyway, he washes and steams my hair and gives me a trim, great. Well as he is starting my flat twists he mentions to another stylist that he used to only want to do blowouts. In my mind I am like "crap" i read the reviews on yelp and it does not seem like everyone here can do all styles. So I am immediately panicked and thinking that my twistout would be terrible. Welp, I was right. He took down my twists and clearly did not know how to style my hair type. I have 4C hair. He barely took the pic through my hair so you could see all the parts, they were not blended. The left side of my head looked like I had glued three layers of hair on my head and it was just sticking straight out. I could have laughed when he told me I was done. Not only that, he knew my hair looked terrible. He kept saying that if I let them know tomorrow if I don't like it when I wake up, they can reschedule me. And then he told me other things I try with other stylists. Um what?! If you were not comfortable with my hair or did not think the style would look good on me, just saying something. He really could have told me he just wanted to give me a blowout instead and I would have been fine. But he didn't. So I paid and left out of there being pissed that I just spent $105 on something that I will have to fix myself. When I got home I had to wet my edges because the edge gel they used left me looking like I had gray hairs around my edges. I then picked my hair and blended my hair and it looked a lot better. I will say, the next day my hair looked so cute once I actually styled it, since it wasn't really styled. The only reason I am writing this review is because they completely ignored my email the next day. I received an email asking for feedback on my salon experience, not only did I leave feedback, and my email address so that they could contact me, but I also emailed their client services email and asked who I should see next time that is actually able to do my hair. Well I received no response. So I am never coming back and neither is my friend. We are on the hunt for a new salon. Huetiful, you really are trying to be an upscale salon that is great for natural hair, but with your high turnover rate, customer service and stylists that are not equipped to do all types of hair, I really don't think you will reach your goal and it sucks. read more

If you're looking for a dope and trustworthy place to get your hair done look no further. I initially found huetiful because of their blow dry bar. I was tired of paying exorbitant prices for washing, blow drying, and trimming my hair. Their services are exactly what I was looking for. My hair has flourished since I've started frequenting this salon. My first visit I sat in the chair and the stylist immediately told me what I needed to change about maintaining my natural hair (mainly that it is the type of hair that needs to be trimmed every two months and put into low manipulation styles, and that it hates protein). I have massive trust issues when it comes to getting a silk press. I got my first silk press here after two years of no heat and I have experienced ZERO HEAT DAMAGE. My favorite stylist is Arkeia, she works just about every day! She's really dope and knowledgeable, as are all of the other stylists at this location :) read more

I left the salon feeling so good about my hair and the overall experience. Nina is an expert and she knows her stuff on all fronts. She was incredibly kind and informative from start to finish. I have had unfortunate experiences at salons throughout the city that seemed confused as to what to do with my particular hair type and this was a real breath of fresh air. I am a biracial woman and my hair is naturally very curly and fine; but I like to wear it straight. Without judgement she walked me through my options and later talked with me about my desires to become more comfortable with my natural curls. We agreed that the nano smoothing treatment was my best bet. Later she made helpful suggestions for my future styling options without pressuring me at all to make an appointment then or buy certain products. We had some fun looking up hair goals and she let me know what was realistic for me. I appreciated her understanding and commitment to really getting to know what would make me happy as a person and a client. Hours later my hair still feels soft and healthy. She styled it to my liking with looser waves that I can coil to keep my style while I sleep or hang around the house. It is very rare to leave a salon with your hair looking exactly as you would want it to if you had the stylist technique/ education to do it yourself. We had natural, easy conversation and even though we had an early 7 AM appointment she and the rest of the team was friendly, upbeat, and energetic. I will absolutely be back! read more

Last Friday was my 3rd time at Huetiful since December 2014. My first time, Daria was my stylist and I absolutely loved the experience and results. The second time was June 2015 and I wasn't as pleased. My stylist seemed to rush through the process (which was a bit upsetting since I was paying $175 for the nanoSmoothing treatment). She didn't explain anything to me and I sat under the steamer trying to figure out if she'd even given me the treatment or not. Then, she didn't blow my hair dry thoroughly enough, so when she flat-ironed it, the steam burned my scalp and a few days later, I had scabs throughout! Not to mention that I thought the conversation she was carrying on with another stylist wasn't exactly appropriate as it was a bit controversial (whether or not Black people should support Floyd Mayweather isn't what I want to hear when I'm spending $200+ at a salon). Nevertheless, I gave her a tip and kept it pushing. I decided to go back because I wanted to give it one more try, this time with a senior stylist (Nina Christmas). I was BEYOND pleased with the entire experience. Nina talked with me about my hair and any concerns I had, while GENTLY going through my hair with a paddlebrush to get out any shedding. She took me to the bowl and washed my hair while showing me how I could do so and save on time. She actually gave me a mirror to watch what she was doing the entire time. She took a ton of before and after photos with each step to show me the difference. I was already so pleased that I decided to upgrade my service to another nanoSmoothing because I was convinced she'd do this well...and she did. She blew my hair dry THOROUGHLY and then flat-ironed it to perfection (without me smelling ANY burning hair). Again, she also took plenty of before and afters and gave me a mirror to watch how much of my hair she was trimming. She then told me how to roll my hair on flexi rods to keep it looking good. It's 5 days later and my hair STILL looks amazing. Nina is the ONLY stylist I will be going to from now on (I believe Daria has moved on from the salon). She was clearly an expert at this process and extremely friendly and personable. It's definitely worth th extra $20 you'll pay to get a senior stylist. Great job! read more

I started going to Huetiful Salon in April 2017 and remain a regular customer. My experience has been great and consistent! The first stylist to service my hair was Shakeeka. From day one, she provided great service. She is very attentive to my request, talks through things to make sure we are on the same page, and has even done a test on my hair before starting the full service to ensure I'm satisfied. The Huetiful Salon is BEAUTIFUL!! I love the exposed brick. The salon is always clean and I love the music. Tasheara is the BEST!!! She has such knowledge of hair and explains everything very well. So I've heard of heutiful about 4 years ago when I did my BC. I've never gotten a chance to visit here until 4 years later. I've even recommended other friends to the salon because I know they specialized in natural hair care. But today when I went in for my first service with Monique, I was a bit disappointed with the outcome of my hair. Don't get me wrong, her service and the team are amazing and I was told she's the best one to go to for wash n goes, but mine didn't come out the way I'm used to with my wash n goes or like others she has done on her ig page. Unfortunately I had to come home and redo my hair. The rain and humidity could have been a part of my hair looking like this but a minor part. Here's a pic to show what I'm saying. The problem with Huetiful is the same problem you encounter at 90% of 'natural hair' salons -- they're really only good at STRAIGHTENING natural hair to mimic relaxed hair. A stylist I went to who is no longer employed there actually mocked my hair texture -- something I never expected from a so-called natural hair salon. I've tried 3 stylists there and they were either catty, incompetent or had skills but surly attitudes. To his credit, the owner has been responsive to my concerns, but tbh, he needs to replace most of the staff and start over with people who are pleasant and truly RESPECT and love working with coily AA hair. Either that or re-brand the place exclusively as a blow out bar and call it a day. read more

*Apologies in advance to my stylist who was kind and funny and to whom I wish every happiness, but I have to share my thoughts* 3 stars because I think black businesses deserve a chance! The place was clean, had great music, kind people. That being said, I will not be returning to this salon, because of how disappointed I was with my results. I came to this salon because I wanted to support black business and I still believe anyone looking into this salon for that reason should consider it! If you do choose to go to this salon, my strongest recommendation is to do your due diligence and find a stylist who seems to have a track record of doing what you need. I wear my hair natural and curly most of the time. Approximately every two years or so, I get curious and pay for a professional flat iron. The first time I did this at a different salon (two years ago) it came out perfectly: silky smooth, full of movement and body. After my recent visit to the blowout bar, my hair was puffy and stiff. I wish I had paid the extra money, did a bit of research and found a stylist who seemed to have experience with curly, natural hair and achieving a lasting, silky press. Again, my stylist was friendly and patient, but seemed to have a lot of difficulty with my texture. She also mentioned to me that she had been at the salon for only three weeks and not once did anyone come to see how she has doing or how my service was. If you are someone who regularly blows out their hair i.e. whose hair is relatively accustomed to blow outs, the blowout bar might do the trick for you. read more

My husband had been telling me to do something for myself ( which I never do), and after 25 years of being my own kitchen beautician, I decided to find a salon that could assist me through my transition from relaxed to natural hair. A few of my Facebook friends posted great reviews for Huetiful, so I scheduled a consultation with one of the specialist. Fearful but curious, I let her recommend a style and at first, I wasn't crazy about my tiny, curly, rod set; but the older my style got, the younger I looked! I even ran out to buy make-up to complement my new cuteness! 2 weeks later, I was back to see Miss. Patricia Bowdry. She is knowledgeable, professional, and right on the money when it comes to suggesting and creating a look for transitioning hair!
