I live in Germany so a real Loctician is hard to find while visiting Chicago I saw a lady with great locks I ask her if she could recommend a Loctician "christian Fields, ask for Jasmine " so I booked online got a confirmation for the next day. I take an Uber from my Hotel and arrived about 25 min early for an 11:00 appointment Shop was Closed then I get a text canceling at10:40 so I order another Uber go back to my hotel and try to find another salon frustrated at having my time And 25.00 in transportation cost Wasted. Kerry did my locs the first time I ever went, he did an excellent job. $65 for wash and retwist on my locs. I was a walk in they took me at the last minute on a busy Saturday morning, he was pleasant had a sense of humor and very organized in booking via e-calendar and great in networking to keep clientele! That was great. The atmosphere is loving, social and definitely soulful in experience to see black people not only servicing and receiving service but enjoying each others company. The atmosphere was quite like Archibald Motley's artwork in reality! What I did not like was in seeking the second visit, I had to schedule with another young lady, forgot her name..she charged way more for loc maintenance and when I asked over the phone why are they not consistent with prices..I got a hold and someone comes back to tell me they'll let me know how much when I come in because they have to see my hair...Um no, not coming and if I'd come back I'd have to secure Kerry again...I really don't like it that it seems each loctition just charges whatever and don't have set price for services. read more

I started going to Christian Fields about 10 years ago or longer. I eventually moved to NWI yet was unable to find service and relationship comparable to the one I had with Mecca. My service is always and has always been TOP NOTCH. I have locs and have never had a problem with any stylist there. I used to go and simply make appointments with whomever was avaiable until Mecca did my hair. Either way, I always left satisfied. I've had my hair colored and styled by Michelle as well. She does a great job and is very easy to talk with. Years ago I wanted hair dye and the colorist gladly applied that too. Whether it's Michelle or Mecca, I have no complaints. I GLADLY take the 45 min to an hour long drive to get my locs styled and CARED FOR at Christain Fields! They not only have great service, the knowledge and training that the stylist have lets me know they are not trying to just make a dollar. This review hurts, because one apple definitely spoiled the vine. I have been coming to Christian Fields for years, and yesterday was my worst and last experience there, until some changes are made. I love my stylist, Angie, but what I have to deal with when I am not interacting with her is no longer worth it. I arrived for my appointment, and a gentleman greeted me and asked me how he could help me. I informed him of my appointment with Angie. He got up to let her know I was there. While he was getting Angie, a woman came up, and immediately told me that the food I had in my hand had to be eaten in the back. And with irritation in my voice (where I was wrong), I replied to her that I knew that already (again being a long term customer) and that I was not even eating anything, just wasn't leaving it in my car. She replied okay and moved on...so I thought. Anyway, the gentleman came back to take me for a wash. This is amazing, because I was seen immediately and that is always great experience. While getting my hair washed, the woman comes back with another client and went on this rant to the staff around her about hating to deal with people, because you can't tell them anything, etc. I knew she was talking about me and she made sure I heard it indirectly. I realized that I had offended her, so when I got up from my wash, and saw her walk past me, I called out to her. She ignored me. So, I said, I will just catch up with her later out loud to myself. The gentleman servicing me went up there and told her...what he said, I have no clue. When the gentleman escorted me to the chair where Angie was going to be doing my hair, I took the time to go up to the front where she was, no one else was up there, and I said, "Excuse me." She ignored me at first, then I said it again, and then she just went in. She barely let me get the first words to come out of my mouth to APOLOGIZE to her for offending her. She argued me down...would not let me complete a thought. When I told her that I heard what she said, she insisted she was not talking about me, but about the staff. I guess I am supposed to be stupid to believe that our incident just occurred and she was talking about the same scenario to the staff about the staff. Okay. I was in shock, in my mind I could not understand for the life of me why this woman is snapping when I was trying to fix it. After trying to get through to her for about 3 or so minutes, I realized I was talking to a "Robert", and I said to her that clearly she did not want to hear what I had to say or want me to talk to her, and she replied, "that would be nice." Now this is the customer service representative that is the person you interact with when you call to make an appointment, when you enter the saloon, and when pay before you leave...and her recourse to give me the silent treatment and not talk to her??!! What kind of BS it that? There was no leadership on site. I doubt very seriously this is the representation and legacy that the late Christian wants to represent his brand. Since there was no one to really report this incident to onsite, I will just have to air my grievances here in hopes that no other person will have to endure such poor unprofessionalism and disrespect. When I shared my experience with a couple of other customers that visit the style bar, they too have noted that this woman is rude and unprofessional. Even in my presence after our interaction, she talked about other customers who called in like trash. Her tolerance for dealing with people is very low, based on my experience, and that is not good for a business. Again, great work at Christian Fields in terms of hair, EXTREMELY poor customer service by the front staff..well "Robert"...a new inside joke of the salon. Too bad I won't be back. Unfortunately, I will take my time, money, and good tip somewhere else, as I should NOT have to be treated this way when paying for a service. Mecca has been my stylist for more than 10 years, from when I had locs to now. I always refer people to her (and to Christian fields generally) because she just knows how to take care of hair. I decided to change things up with a blow out. Mecca is the only person I'm comfortable with using heat on my hair because I know she'll make sure to take care of it. I love the style and my hair doesn't smell burned which is obviously a good sign. I've gotten two strand twists before from another woman at Christian fields (I dont recall her name) and she also did a nice job. But Mecca is a pro on all hair types! read more

This is my favorite shop. They have vision and just overall good vibes and energy that lead to beyond amazing styles. They keep my hair healthy and as a result it's growing like crazy. I met with Angela for a consultation--she was patient, thoughtful and listened carefully to my ideas for adding color to my locs. Angela is a champion colorist--she is truly gifted in the way she can translate color from a reference picture to the the formulas she puts together. My hair hasn't looked this good in years. I am very satisfied with the results of my appointment and the overall pleasant atmosphere of the salon is a definite plus. I know, I know...the infamous Christian Fields Salon, why two stars? I hate to rate them so low. Let me just start this review with the positive: First off, I'd like to say this is a BEAUTIFUL establishment. The salon is gorgeous! The beautiful earthy hues of the salon gives off a hip, classy vibe! I love the way it looks inside. I even love the fact that you could go to the back to order some good down home cooking while you get your hair done! No other shop I have been to offers such an atmosphere. It does make me proud to be able to see an establishment like this on the south side that is black owned! yeah! I am a supporter of a black owned business! The work they do here is very good. If you are looking for a loctician, or someone to really give you a new natural style---they are great for doing this. I've seen so many stylist, and clients whose hair looked great! I have to admit Candrice, who was my stylist did amazing work...and I LOVED MY HAIR. Thanks Candrice! Also, I feel as if I was given knowledge on how to take care of my natural hair better because not many shops tell you this which is annoying. So the knowledge was appreciated. Price is very reasonable here. Alright, so why the two stars... I must admit I did make a last minute appointment on the same day I wanted to get my hair done. But before I did this I asked the man who was the receptionist if this would be an issue, and if I would have to wait a great deal to get my hair done because I had plans. If it would have been an issue I would have not made the appointment. I was told "no", and they would be able to get me in and out. COOL! I also asked if my stylist would be the main one doing my hair...and not doing client after client--and I was told that the stylist focuses on one client at a time...which I found to be false. So, because I was referred from my friend who swears by their work, I drove from O'hare area to the south-side to get my hair done. I was greeted by Candace, and told her what I was looking for and asked if time permitted could I have color...a highlights. She told me she could...and we kinda had an idea in place as to what to do (although, I must admit at first it was mistaken for half head of highlights--which I am glad I didn't do). The trouble starts here: I get there at 1:00 on the dot, and my initial expectation was my stylist doing just my hair. Again, that is NOT the case at Christian Fields. The stylist does multiple heads at the same time. Here I am waiting to get my hair done watching my stylist do client after client...looking at my phone thinking, I need to make it out of here in 2 hours to make an event that I was obligated to attend. Is that even going to happen? When I arrive at 1:00 on the dot...I wait for my stylist to be free, and then I wait some more for her to start my hair... Let me fast forward here by saying I didn't leave until 6:45! Close to 6 hours!!!!! I didn't ask for micros, starter locs, Senegalese or Havana braids...I just asked for a couple strands of color (peekabo highlights I guess) and a twist out. I thought that my time waiting here was completely unacceptable and I should have been told this was the policy before I made the trip. Otherwise I would have not gone here. I was very livid. On top of it, I feel like it's not really a professional atmosphere here. I am not saying you can't have fun when you are working---I think you must have fun! But this place plays around with professionalism...and there are certain couthe tactics one must take to make the client comfortable and happy. You must know good salon etiquette. Loud, obnoxious/uncomfortable jokes, chit chatting with co workers while you should be working on your clients hair/leaving from doing a clients head to chit chat with your co-worker is not okay. Remarks/jokes from other stylist about a client--some clients are uncomfortable with remarks. You can't automatically assume that you have that type of relationship and rapport with a client to "joke" around with them like that...I find it to be quite crude. When asked about my experience, I was blatantly honest because I hope that there can be improvements moving forward. I'd like to see this shop grow and succeed, and hope they can make some changes. The receptionist was very nice and he offered to get me lunch and tried to make up for my experience. But I just wanted to get out of there. Again, I loved my hair! CANDRICE IS GREAT!!! She already has me excited for what she plans to do to my hair next. And if all those other things change, I would go back to add more spice to my new do---but I just can't put up with unprofessionalism and time disrespect--and bad salon etiquette. When I come to a salon, I want to feel relaxed. Not stressed out, or on the edge because of time. If I show up on time, and show no disrespect to your time, I ask that you do the same for me...especially if I am paying you my hard earned money and a great tip. read more

This shop is great for hair designs. That's how I came to the shop. When I saw people with a nice design they would say Christian Fields. The style bar is nice as well. This is the end of the positives. The negatives are: TIME. I would be in there all day. It did not matter whether I had a scheduled appt or walked in. I would get bumped. Even after scheduling to be the first client they ended up scheduling someone before me. The amount of time is a big turn off. As well I was on a regular appt but had death in the family. I tried calling 3 times...they went over to an automated system. Noone called back. I have also emailed them. Noone has called back. Third they put this heavy guck in your hair made by Christian. It's okay but just a little over the top. It takes me several of days and sleeping on a towel for that stuff to wear off some. Last the changeover in staff. I have had various people work on my head because they are all supposedly trained by Chris. They come and go, get training and go do their own thing. So it's hard to build a relationship with one person. Trendy it is but as far as customer service AWFUL. read more

My last review of the Christian Fields Style Bar was pretty rough because the customer service was so bad. But then... the owner, Christian Fields, caught wind of my wife's experience and worked really hard to fix it. He offered to provide the services for free or pay for her to go somewhere else. This gesture proved to me that he does not support bad customer service and values his patrons. Which for me makes all of the difference. She went back and got the red carpet treatment and loved it. I don't often write Yelp reviews, but I felt particularly strongly about writing one regarding my experience with Christian Fields Style Bar. I've been trying, to no avail, to make an appointment for color for over a week. I just wanted information of whether or not I needed to give a deposit, or perhaps go through a consultation appointment, but I can't even reach anyone to advise me. I have been told that I need to speak with one specific person who hasn't returned my calls, and who has not called me back after leaving my information for her with reception. It's one of the most frustrating experiences I've had with a business in quite awhile. If I were on a tight timeline, I would have been completely out of luck. Not sure if I'll ever be able to truly weigh to verify the all of wonderfulness that people sing CF Style Bar's praises for, but I will say this - they must be doing very well, as it doesn't seem at all that they are interested in/in need of new business. Why have I waited so long to sing the praises of my stylist, the best locktician in Chicago? Shahid has been doing my hair for about 6 years, and he has clearly spoiled me because I have yet to find a salon home in Atlanta. Whenever I go home, he is one of the first people I see. Positives: 1. PROFESSIONALISM: When you have a 2pm appointment with Shahid, you are in the shampoo bowl at 2pm. This is a man who knows how to respect your time! He works quickly and efficiently. Also, he is a gentleman. Shop talk is always positive, and he is never distracted. In all these years, never a personal call, drama, or even remotely inappropriate comment. 2. Skills and products: Organic, simple recipes: no mystery products. 3. Atmosphere: I've followed Shahid to a few locations, and Christian Fields is the best so far. Okay okay I really like this salon :) So, Christian Fields called me at my office because he found out about the debaucle that happened last weekend. He made a special color for me and Larenzo gave me the most beautiful color oh my goodness. Nia washed my hair and curled it she was very sweet and funny. Christian Fields as an owner and Larenzo as a colorist are artists. Larenzo explained each step to me and literally painted the highlights and gradient color onto my hair LITERALLY. I got five star treatment and I loved it. I didn't realize this but they also have a shop downstairs that sells shea butter and frangrance oil as well as a delicious smelling cafe of sorts on the main floor that sells made to order turkey burgers and jerk chicken. I am fasting so I didn't taste the chicken but it smelled wonderful. I did buy some shea butter and incense from downstairs and I they are wonderful. read more

I took my fiancée in for a surprise appointment. This was her first visit to a hair Salon in almost ten years! (She does her own hair usually and a great job too). The shop seems to specialize in locs but they also do natural hair styles and weaves. When I called to set up the appointment for her, I was greeted with a friendly woman who walked me through setting up the appointment and the stylist. When we arrived we were greeted with a lively but comfortable atmosphere. No stylist were upstairs at the time and we were directed down stairs. The shop looks well maintained both up and downstairs. When we got downstairs we found out that the stylist who was suppose to do her hair was not there yet. However, all of the other stylist were friendly and one even went an extra step to contact the stylist and see where she was and when she would be there. After the stylist arrived (kinda late due to some miscommunication on both the shop and my end) she was pleasant and very apologetic. Although I did not stay, my fiancée said the experience was amazing and she would def come back. Michelle was the stylist she saw and I must say, she did an amazing job! My husband and I both have locs and Dustin is our stylist. My oldest daughter has natural hair and Candryce is her stylist. We all have different needs. My husband usually goes first thing is the morning in by 7am or 8am and he is back at work by 10am. I on the other hand, usually like my locs in intricate styles especially when I have formal events. I am very particular about my Bantu Knots. LOL !! Dustin does a great job and always gives me exactly what I want. I moved to Chicago about a year ago and was in need of a salon. I was so use to my hair stylist in DC and was nervous to try anyone else. I asked around and was given two salons names and one of the names was: Christian Fields Salon. I went to the salon for a visit for the first time and spoke to a gentleman named Shaheed. He was very nice, polite, patient and answered all of my questions pertaining to my hair. I left feeling as though I would give them a try soon but was still hesitant. I went back to the salon a few months later and spoke to the owner, Christian Fields. Chris was very professional and was very knowledgeable about hair. I was impressed with his knowledge of hair from the start. He actually informed me that the last stylist that styled and maintained my locs had actually damaged them. I was shocked! I had been going to this stylist for over 5 years. He immediately explained to me how my hair was damaged, went through a step by step process of how he would rebuild and strengthen my hair back to my natural state. Almost one year later and I am still going to Chris for loc maintenance. Chris is the real deal! He has several hair licenses and certificates. He is God sent. I have been taking my daughter here off and on for around two years now. Candryce always has her looking beautiful when I pick her up. My son gets his hair cut there now and then. My children are young, 8 and 10, so I'm picky about where I take them. Barbershops especially can be rated X(tra). I always feel great about having my children in such a diverse setting. The people who work there and the patrons seem to be very positive. The salon is beautiful and clean. I love the kitchen idea, I've purchased food for my children there on occasion. As far as professionalism I've always been treated with respect and received great customer service from the front desk. The Late Christian would be extremely dissatisfied with the turn the Salon has taken as of late. The biggest disappointment in the way things are ran is the very first person You come in contact with in the front by the Name of Jan.. We really didn't have a personal interaction aside from the initial booking but as I sit getting My locs twisted I noticed that her behaivor and lac of Proffessionalism was disgusting and I was embarrassed for her.. She literally was trying to be a stylist and receptionist all at once.. She was hollering to the rear of the salon and down the stairs while using alley type profanity.. She was rude and You can hear her talk about clients when they left,, It was appalling.. Not to mention that she looks like the cleaning lady and not the very first person You want to see nor does she have the attitude to deal with people... There's zero comfort or a welcoming feeling until You sit down with Your stylist but by then the entire experience is off.. She is a very bad representation of Christian Fields. I love this place! The place has a comfortable, familial vibe because the staff are very warm and welcoming. The music and the decor is great as well. Most importantly, the place is CLEAN and is kept that way throughout the day. Additionally, the prices are actually very affordable compared to some of the other upscale or better known natural salons. The last reviewer must have sour grapes (maybe she dated a stylist?) or be super sensitive because I've been there off and on for the past two years and not experienced any psycho or unprofessional behavior from the staff. The stylists have been nothing but complimentary and professional while I was there. The stylists go out of their way to make you feel beautiful because that is their job and they practice good customer service, which is a rarity these days. I've been in plenty of salons where a "ghetto" mentality predominates and this one is surely not one of them. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because on busy days like Friday and Saturday, there is a significant waiting time even if you have a previously scheduled appointment and the street parking is somewhat inadequate because the location is right on a busy street. I'd advise anyone coming for a first time appointment or consultation to come early in the week during the early or late afternoon for a no-wait appointment. read more

I came in this place on a whim without an appointment and had my locks done in 4 hours, my hair was well past shoulder length. BYRON was fast, funny, and clearly knew what he was doing. Everyone in the salon was friendly and you could tell they all care as it shows in the atmosphere. Theres even a food bar in the back! Anybody looking to get locks or braids I highly recommend this place. I went to a couple yuppie places up north and they quoted me outrageous prices, I'm glad I came here to get them done and will definitely come back to get them touched up. I called Thursday for an appointment today(Tuesday) drove all the way from Park Forest at 8 this morning to get to the shop and be told that the receptionist never entered the appointment. Very disappointed and upset for wasting time and gas!!! I've been a client for over three years and this is by far my worse experience. If it wasn't for my stylist Dustin and shampoo guy Lorenzo I guarantee I wouldn't I would take my business elsewhere simply because of this inconvenience and lack of job performance by the receptionist. I had my locs colored and styled last week... and my style still looks good. I have received so many compliments on my new color and style! The Style Bar has such a warm feeling, staff members are friendly and professional chic! I would have never selected the style Christian did for me, however I trusted him and it came out great!
