Was having some hard start issues on 95 mercruiser and called Hugo up after going through multiple yelp vendors. He messaged me back pretty quickly and we discussed possible issues. After a small conversation he came up with a couple possible culprits and we scheduled to meet at the harbor. Once below deck he went through a quick diagnosis check. He was able to find a couple minor issues and able to sort them out quickly and get the boat started. He noted a few items and advised a change to a few maintenance items to prevent the hard starts going forward. His expertise led to a quick diagnosis/fix at a reasonable rate and added knowledge for myself going forward to eliminate the same issue from arising again! I just moved my boat to Newport Dunes Marina and hardly know anyone to fix issues with my boat. My marina neighbor recommended a guy named Randall that charges $125/hr with a minimum of two hours. My toilet is not flushing and aft bilge pump are not working So I paid Randall $250 and quoted me $300 for toilet parts and $400 to install, aft bilge pump is $300 and $250 to install. So I went ahead and said yes. Nightmare started the following day, he called me back and said that the toilet will need to be rebuild - he knows a company that will do it for $500. Then he added another $375 - 3hrs to install the pump because he will need to clean it the area around it. So my total cost of repair went up from $1500 to $2375. I felt like being cheated since he looked at it for 1.5 hrs. But he still billed me for two hours. This is when Hugo came to the rescue. I would like have another opinion so I called him and immediately said to call Randall to return the toilet bowl and parts. Hugo says that great pumps are $89 and toilet parts like Jabsco unit can be replaced without needing 'a third party called 'they' as Randall added for $500. He came out to check the parts online and we found an entire unit for $198. Hugo's boat service saved me close to $1800 dollars. Bilge pump - $96 w/ tax, $150 to install Jabsco unit - $215 w/ tax, $150 to install ------ $611.00 - done in 2 days. I highly recommend Hugo! One of the reason why I called him is because of the 'no fix, no charge' in his business card. Don't get trap with some of these highly certified mechanics that gouges people. I recall this Randall fellow also said to me. I will call you when can I fix it, that's how these works. Yeah right! Thank God there are a few honest people out there. read more

Responds to texts and calls. Fairly priced. He was a pleasure to work with. I hired Hugo to help with an oil change, fuel filter change, and to troubleshoot a water pump that had been slowly leaking coolant for a few months, on my Catalina 30' in Newport. He came out to inspect the water pump, talked me through everything he was seeing and we decided a new pump was the best action. Then he FOUND THE PARTS FOR ME on eBay. Hugo is timely and extremely thurough. He went through my universal 5411 diesel after we finished repairing the leaky thermostat valve and found some other things that were going to fail soon. I am going to have him come out again and rebuild the entire fuel system that has been problematic since I bought the boat 7 years ago. Two very poor service experiences Experience #1 Annual Service: The oil change was fine. Fuel filter change- poor. The fuel filter change was very bad. The fuel filter was not installed properly and a major leak occurred. The new mechanic removed the filter and found the incorrectly installed gaskets. Additional Repair Cost $400 Experience #2: Engine Overheading- Westerbeke 30 Hugo diagnosed the problem as the thermostat that was not functioning. That was replaced. He then looked at the impeller but did not replace it and did not notice the crack. In addition, he did not remove the pump housing to determine if there was water flow. He did not diagnose the issue in sequence to determine water flow and what was the problem. He wanted to bring the boat out and run it for hours to determine if it overheated under load. I was not too keen on doing that and getting stranded. I lost confidence in him and selected another mechanic. They diagnosed the issue in 30 minutes- one of the outlets of the pump housing was clogged with hardened salt. The issue was fixed quickly at a reasonable cost. I reported these findings to Huggo and he had no response. I would have hoped for a partial refund and some explanation. Everyone makes mistakes. No Response. No Refund. I am very disappointed. He is a very nice person but he did a very poor job on my boat and I would not recommend him for any large boats. read more
