The Hugos guys couldn't replicate the issue (even though it was very obvious) and pointed out the inside of our tires was wearing quickly. Well, after taking the car to the BMW dealership in Carlsbad, we learned that the premature wear and the grinding noise were indicators of the well-known transfer case failure issue affecting a lot of BMW models, especially ones with higher horsepower like our M50i. The BMW dealership replaced the transfer case under warranty after we replaced the tires, and even gave us a loaner to use for a few days. Looking online, it appears that this problem occurs with A LOT of BMWs. I would've expected the Hugos guys to recognize the symptoms. For things like oil changes and minor issues, Hugos has been great for us in the past. But for larger problems we will likely take our vehicles elsewhere. read more

They noticed as I drove away my car was leaking way too much oil and would endanger the engine. So they made room to accommodate me. I had a flat. Went to a "tire" store. Should have known better. The guy comes back after 15 minutes with that look - the "this is going to cost you" look. He tells me I need about $5000 worth of service - immediately on a car with 150,000 miles. Then I went to Hugos and found out I just needed new brakes. Had them done in an hour. There is something about expertise that is just dying in this country and that is why Hugos is so refreshing. I know that they operate with integrity, image that? I was greeted warmly and set a ease. I just left Hugos with an amazing experience. Rick and the team had repaired a vacuum concern on my wife's 335D and I mentioned I had caused some warning lamps after wrenching on my 330I. I had a random day off today and asked (rudely) if I could come by and wait for a scan. I have been at Dealer Service Departments for 34 years and know exactly what a painful question that is. I cannot say enough good things about Hugos, and Rick the owner. Ive never been to an auto repair place that instills so much confidence in the estimate and actual repair work as them. I originally took my Volvo in to another repair shop when it wouldn't start. They told me it would be 1400 bucks to get it going again. I called Hugos to get a 2nd opinion and he let me know what he thought the prob was, so I had the tow truck go to the 1st shop and bring it to Rick. 100 bucks later, I was back on the road, with a clear plan on what my car needed next. Here's another story to demonstrate how great they are over at Hugos. (grab some popcorn) So my car started stinking, and it seemed exhaust was filling my interior every single time I drove it. I researched the issue and I wrongly diagnosed my car as having a bad cat. Took it to Rick and asked him to replace the cat converter. He said he didn't think it needed it and to get it smogged again to check, but he was sure it was unnecessary. He was right. I did develop a small oil leak on the turbo, that he notified me about, but recommended that I don't repair as its pretty normal on older Volvo's. Fast forward a bit of time, I have enough of the smell and take it to him, open to any price repair to fix the smell, and I instructed him to repair / replace/ rebuild the turbo, as I thought that could be the only thing creating the problem. Its a big $$ repair, and he said no- he wouldn't do that as he thought it was ok, and he would look into the problem further. A bit later I went to see him and he told me what the culprit was: a vapor seal for the AC system was not on all the way, letting the gasses from the engine bay into the interior. 45 dollars and he solved an issue that had me almost selling the car. The same thing happened with my front suspension, where I thought I needed to replace almost everything, and he insured me that my issue was simple and would not let me pay him 800+ bucks to do the job. Cliff notes: I was prepared to pay him HUNDREDS of dollars on 2 or 3 different occasions to fix a problem that he eventually fixed for 45 bucks. That's honesty my friends. If you have ANY issue with your European car, you can take it to Hugos and rest easy about it- They are honest, fast, reasonable, and best of all friendly and personable. read more
