I was in Encinitas house hunting and my battery went dead-dead. I limped my car to Scott's and spoke w Mike. Mike quickly replaced the battery and ran a diagnostic on the alternator. It needed to be replaced. I had a feeling. My last battery only lasted 2 years. 2008 Acura MDX w 140k miles. It was Friday afternoon and it wasn't going to happen that day. Horrible service what out they might scam you!!Manager Mike don't give a dame about customer Service they don't even do diagnose your vehicle to if your vehicle is properly running or anything need to be done beside oil change $75 just to change oil and an air check that's ridiculous. When John and I did our last big van trip, the van had a leaking coolant rear heating element in Rocky Mountain National Park. Fortunately we were able to get it to a cranky CO mechanic and he fixed it. It's pretty important our 99 Econoline Van is reliable as it cost about $2000 to get a tow from some of the places we go and we'd like to take it into mexico While this was all happening we were looking at all sorts of vans including a $200,000 and 900,000 one. John said that the most expensive one should include the IN N OUt feature. You drive into an IN N Out in Arizona and the van comes out at the IN N OUt in Encinitas. Anyway I took matters into my own hands and while John was sailing I took the van down to my favorite mechanics at Scott's Automotive in Encinitas. Mike helped me determine what we needed, and Jimmy did a great job working on the van. My instruction was that they make the van reliable enough to drive into Mexico. The van really drives much better and I feel confident it will go down and back to Mexico without a problem. It costs us about $4000 to get the work done but I'm looking at it and thinking how much money buying a 'new to us' van would costs. The old van is still chugging along and apparently we can expect to get at least another 60,000 miles on her (to 200,000) and probably even more. And I'm back in the area and have had to have some repairs done recently and Scott he has been so helpful and accommodating as well as all of his staff, especially Mike! They were so knowledgable and kind. Went over with concern about whether it was safe to drive my 2017 Outback because of a grinding noice when I pressed on the accelerator. I was worried about having to drive on the freeway to San Diego the next day. Even though they were completely booked today, they kindly checked out the noice and put it up on the lift to see and it turned out to only be loose bolt. I've had my cars repaired at quite a few different non-dealer places, on quite a few different older cars ('70 Challenger, '69 Corvette, '47 Ford Woody, multiple Jeep Wrangler TJ's). I would give those other places a 3-Star rating at best. I give Scott's a 5 Star rating. Scott gave me a fair deal on an engine R&R on my '59 Fairlane. More than the fair deal, he was very gracious with his time and acted as the QB on all the rebuild projects (engine, transmission, radiator, fuel pump, power steering pump, water pump, rear-end) without up-charging. Scott gave me a "bro-deal" on the time/mileage of delivering and retrieving all the rebuilt components. As with any project, there are usually issues and he handled those extremely professionally, timely and didn't "re-charge". Places like this are a dying breed, fortunately, his family is involved and hopefully Scott's will be around long after Scott and myself are! read more

These guys are great! The check engine light came on in my 04 Tacoma and there was a rumble sound + movement when idling. I was pretty nervous that it could be a serious issue and that it may be really expensive and take a long time. I took it into Scotts and they did a quick check on it right away and said they would need a few days. By the next day they had already informed me of the full problem and said they could fix for a few hundred bucks (way better than I expected) and then by the end fo the day she was ready tog o and they had even fixed another small problem I mentioned. These guys are the real deal. Been there twice and they charged me hardly anything for an ongoing issue with my Tahoe. In between my two visits here i took the 03 Tahoe to another shop... not knowing any better. Other shop was $1500 and never resolved the issue and had to wait several days each time. These guys took two tries and both were done same day and ... less than $250. What neither of these shops knew is that I grew up working in may dads shop in AZ. I know that they could have charged more, made excuses etc. They didn't, the work was fat and honest. Highly recommended. read more

I have relied on Scott's Automotive a handful of times for over 20 years. I usually do my own wrenching but when it comes to welding I go to the pros. These guys are pros, especially for anything exhaust related. They installed a brand new muffler and tailpipe rather quickly on my 20 year old Ram truck at a very fair price. I've been here a few times and have been referred here more than a few times. These guys are HONEST! I, like most of you, want the most value for my money and each time they've worked on my vehicle, it was as promised. My vehicle is over 20 years old, I am the second owner and figure it's more than worth keeping up. Sometimes I wonder if it's better to sell it to someone willing to work on it. Since my truck has been reliable, I fix and/or maintain as needed. These guys are clear and direct with necessary details. Their prices are in the ballpark of other places, but I trust these guys to be straightforward. Sometimes with other auto places or mechanics I don't feel as confident with what they say. They also pretty much stick to the time frame they've given when I drop off my car, which is great. It's also interesting to talk to them about their races! :) read more

Warning - Called them at 8am and asked if they could take my truck to fix a loud grinding noise. They said yes - I dropped it off and they called me at 9:30am to tell me there's a shim missing from rear brakes... I said great, let's get it fixed. I call at 4:30pm and ask for an update - they said to come get it... I pick it up, and within 4 feet I hear the same noise. It's like they did not even test drive it, they charged me and basically kicked me out. Hate that this is a local Leucadia business treating a 34+ year resident like this... I made an appointment at another mechanic to take a look at the truck tomorrow. read more

Scott's is a family run business ( I worked with Tyler) and they helped me with several problems with my 71 chevy truck. They suggested that a tune up (new wires and plugs) would do the trick. I picked my truck up today and it's quite literally never driven so good! The bill was less than what they quoted me on the phone and they fixed a few small issues for free (including the issue that brought me to them in the first place).
