J2. Jumbo Pomelo and Mango with Sago
    Anthony H.

Saw a clip on this place on Instagram and I added to my hot list. On a recent visit to the UCB campus we stopped by here after lunch. The place is very small. Only 4 counter seatings with high stools and a small table for two. Some reviewers said there is another room in the back, but when we visited there was a barrier erected in the hallway preventing access. You can order using the kiosk or from the staff. This place specializes in fresh made mango and coconut desserts/drinks. These type of cafes are popular in Hong Kong so we are so glad now it is available close to home. We ordered the Mango with Dragon Fruit Icy, Mango with Crystal Jelly, and the jumbo Mango with sago and pomelo. The mangos for each drink tasted so fresh and they were generous with the portions. For a warm day like the day we visited, these dessert drinks were so refreshing and the combination of fresh mangos with other desserts like crystal jelly, chewy balls or sago were so delightful. The jumbo mango with sago and pomelo can easily be shared by two so for the price it was a great value. We vow to return to try other items from the menu.

Nice little dessert place. This is a HongKong dessert name known for their sweet delicious mango desserts. We ordered the C4 mango pancake and A1 Jumbo mango chewy balls. Maybe it's no longer mango season so the mangoes in our orders were p sour. Even the mango ice cream in the A1 was sour and icy. So try only when mangoes are in season or other non-mango desserts?

One evening in Berkeley, after dinner, we searched for a dessert place to walk off our meal. We discovered Hui Lau San, which has limited seating. Only one staff member was working, and orders were made at a kiosk, as is common today. Many to-go orders were visible. The staff was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed the coconut jelly with mango, which was delicious, along with the coconut jelly with rice. The sago with coconut milk had a delightful flavor. I would love to return and explore more of their menu.

I always enjoy coming here for a good mango coconut sago. The place is small with limited seating so I would consider it most mostly a two go spot but if you get lucky, you can have a small group sit there. They are very quick to serve you and their drink drinks are very refreshing. I've tried multiple items on the list and I liked them all, but I really enjoy going there specifically for the mango sago. Of course it's downtown Berkeley so parking can be tough but usually when we go there we've gone somewhere else before so it's not an issue. They are a self order location unless you need help they will help you.

Really good and fast service. Mine as shown below is ordered through fresh daily made at Weee! It is so sad that they closed sister stores in Asia such as those ones in Hong Kong. The fast food cafe like atmosphere also reminds me of happy, carefree days as a Cal student so I will keep ordering and supporting them. The best thing about Asian dessert is that the taste and sugar level is always "just right" and never too sweet!

This Hong Kong style dessert shop is amazing. It's been years since I been to one. Ihe coconut jelly with mango is out of this world. The delicate coconut flavor with an incredibly rich, creamy, and velvety texture is out of this world. The fresh chunks of mango mixed in with the bouncy coconut jelly is just amazing. The location is modest at best. I've been to other stores where it's much nicer but the desserts are all exceptionally good regardless of the store. This is one of my favorite places for dessert, so good I would go out of my way just to get it.

The durian boba was pretty good. I could smell the durian from the cup. The durian is not super strong, to be expected from a boba that isn't like really expensive. But I liked the taste and mix of textures. I ordered on the ipad and sat at the table inside which is nice. Though I guess they're probably filled up quickly when the place is more busy.

Came here after a spicy dinner with my friends, and this place hit the not-too-sweet craving we were looking for! We ordered the mango coconut noodle and durian pancake to split among three, which was the perfect amount for us. There wasn't a ton of seating, but we were able to crowd around a standing/bar table situation. A5. Mango Coconut Noodle: 4.5/5 - the base was a mango slush on the icier side, with a mango ice cream scoop (very frozen), coconut noodles, and mango chunks. This was very refreshing and not-too-sweet. The coconut noodles paired well with the slush and added a bouncy, slightly chewy experience. In retrospect, I think I was more so craving the coconut jelly with a side of mango rather than a mango forward dessert, but this still hit the spot. C5. Durian Pancake: 5/5 - The pancake was a thin green crepe that wrapped around a stabilized cream with a small, but potent amount of durian at the center that permeated every bite. It was perfectly not too sweet, creamy, and fruity/vanilla-y in the way durian is. Would recommend for durian fans. Would come again when I'm in the area!

Authentic tasting Chinese dessert drinks. They seem to love mangos here, as most drinks here have mangos in it. So, the 3 stars is for 2 reasons. One, the slow service and number 2 the inability to customize drinks such as less sugar. The drink is super sweet and some things are premade like the bases. The coconut cream was cold and delicious but once again the mango and the rest of the drink was waaayyy too sweet for me. I'm sure it has more if not the same amount of sugar as a liter of Coca Cola.

I absolutely, truly love this place. I got their mango sago drink and mango mochi, and both were super high-quality, they did not skimp with any of the mango pulp or mango fruit pieces in the drink and it was so absolutely delicious. It tasted super fresh and was made with care and attention. The mango mochi were soft pillowy pieces of thin crepe skin filled with cream with a little bit of mango in the center. It was barely sweet, which is the Chinese way and I absolutely love that. I think its super rare to find a quality drink shop where the drink and snacks quality are so high when it comes to mango. I think a lot of boba places in the Bay Area use still raw, unripe mango pieces and also dilute their mango drinks with tons of ice and still charge premium prices for them for little pieces of mango, but here they do not skimp on quality or quantity, while maintaining affordable prices. The quality is so high and the prices are so affordable for what they provide. So absolutely delicious, I will be back here as often as I can.

Small shop with not a lot of seating, but most people just take it to-go anyway. I ordered through the kiosk both times visiting. It's kinda overwhelming, but using the search bar helps a lot! I got the Mango Crystal Jelly Cup and my friend got the Pomelo & Mango with Sago. Both were super refreshing and not overly sweet. Loved the mango smoothie base and the mango ice cream on top (more like sherbet texture). Mango chunks were a bit tart, but it's off-season so no biggie. Only complaint is the jelly was super long and slippery, makes it hard to scoop with their spoons. My friend's had coconut milk and pomelo in it, and she really liked it too!

I love this place! My husband and I ordered through Snackpass because it was our first time using the app, and I believe we got 5% off -- though I'm not entirely sure. We ordered the Passion Fruit Mango Icy and Mango & Coconut with Crystal Jelly, and we loved both drinks. The passion fruit mango is perfect for a hot day, especially after a heavy or oily meal -- it's so refreshing and really helps cleanse the palate. The mango & coconut is an amazing combination; the mango and crystal jelly balance out the richness of the coconut perfectly, creating a well-rounded, delicious drink that you have to try. The sweetness is just right -- not too sweet, which I really appreciate. The shop itself is quite small with limited seating, so it's more of a pick-up-and-go spot. The service was decent -- not over-the-top, but good enough for a quick stop. Parking can be a bit challenging, so keep that in mind when you visit.

The Hui Lau Shan in Berkeley offers desserts and refreshments, everything made of mango. It has been around since 1960. The interior is warm and friendly, with muted pastel pink walls. The ceiling also had a nice stream of lights shaped like umbrellas. We enjoyed the mango slush with sago, along with the mango mochi and jumbo mango chewy ball. The sweetness was light, coming from the drink and the mochis. The jumbo was soft, creamy and chewy. We will stop by again the next time we visit Berkeley.

They are friendly and welcoming upon entry and allow you to try flavors! When I came in July 2026, they had unique flavors like saffron, lavender, earl grey, and hibiscus among many others! The only issue is there's no clear menu posted online, so we walked in completely blind. Their website shows a long list of flavors but not what they actually have that day, so it felt like a guessing game. The line moved really slow because there was only one employee handling everything. She was taking orders, giving samples, answering questions, and ringing people up all at once. She was super friendly and doing her best, but it felt like a lot for one person during a rush and the shop could definitely use more help. The space is really small and tight so it was hard to even see the flavors until we got close to the front. When we finally got up there, a lot of the tubs were already empty which was confusing since most ice cream shops restock. Some flavors I wanted weren't available anymore, and if they're out it would make more sense to just remove them from display. The dirty containers didn't make sense to display. I sampled the jasmine green tea and knew right away I wanted it. It was creamy with a smooth tea flavor that wasn't overpowering. I got a small with half jasmine green tea and half avocado. The avocado was surprisingly really good, super creamy and tasted like a fresh avocado smoothie. Both flavors weren't overly sweet which I liked. My husband wanted cookies and cream but it was sold out so he got chocolate chip instead, which was solid and creamy with good texture. Overall the ice cream itself was good, not the best I've had but definitely not bad. I like that the flavors lean more natural and not overly sweet. I could see myself coming back if I'm in the area, but the experience would be a lot better with faster service and more consistency with what's actually available.

I ordered the Tiger brown sugar milk tea w/ boba pearls, Hot Cheetos Half N Half corn dog (comes with choice of dipping, I got mustard), 8 piece fried dumplings (comes with soy sauce), fruity pebbles mochi donut, and the strawberry and banana nutella croffle. The milk tea was super good, could never go wrong with a brown sugar milk tea! The hot Cheetos corn dog was crispy and super good as well, however I wish I had eaten it when it was still hot to get that cheese pull... the fried dumplings were crispy and delicious. The fruity pebbles mochi donut was really soft and chewy (in a good way) and had the flavor of a glazed donut. Also the cereal tasted fresh! The strawberry/ banana Nutella croffle was so delicious and tasted like a strawberry/ banana waffle. I think this one had to be my fave. Overall, I paid a little under $40 with tip for all the food and I would definitely go again!

Their sandwiches are probably what first got me hooked. The bread is so good, with a chewy inside and a nice crust, and the fillings are always fresh and flavorful. The combinations are also really well thought out. From there, I started working my way through the rest of the menu. I've had their Kouign Amann, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, baguette, Sourdough Batard, Sunflower Rye Spelt, pretzel buns (you can probably tell I'm a bread person), pies, seasonal radicchio salad, and passionfruit madeleines. Their seasonal radicchio salad has actually become one of my favorites to take to work for lunch. I also love that they rotate the Kouign Amann flavors, so there's usually something new to try whenever I stop by. I've enjoyed almost everything I've had here. One pie was a little too sweet for me personally, but that's really the only thing that comes to mind. I also really like the presentation and the atmosphere. The pastry case always looks beautiful and tempting, and the space feels relaxed and welcoming. It's easy to pop in and grab something, but it's also a nice place to meet friends for coffee and something sweet. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality, which is another reason I keep coming back. More than anything, I just really enjoy having Starter Bakery in the area. The ambiance is wonderful - I absolutely love the deep blue color scheme, the cute matching mugs, and gorgeous plants. When I tried to take the pastry out of the package to share it with my girlfriend, it completely crumbled into a big mess. I went up to the counter to let them know, and the employee told me it was actually meant to be eaten straight from the package. She mentioned it was on the drier side being vegan, she took the crumbled mess and gave me a new one but it ended up having the exact same issue. It wasnt dry, but it just wouldn't hold any moisture and was far too crumbly to eat. For $5, this tiny pastry was a major letdown. To make the interaction weirder, she took the original crumbled bread back from me and I'm only assuming threw it away, which felt entirely unnecessary. Having been vegan for nine years, I've had some truly amazing, moist vegan baked goods, so this was incredibly disappointing. While the vibe and aesthetic are great, the vegan options were major letdown. CC accepted Restroom available

The chunks of chocolate covered potato chips were lodged in the ice cream and I felt like an archaeologist excavating ancient rocks as my spoon lifted the potato chocolate chunks out of the creamy custard into my mouth. I bought a pint. The Mick Jagger was another joy, with its salty caramel and Oreo chunks. They're lucky Peaches Christ was sold out because I might've lost my mind for a peach cobbler ice cream! They wouldve had to drag me out by the back of my neck like a rabid dog! Maybe next time. All in all, tasty ice cream. Would recommend.

Bad Walter's was a random find one day out walking after dinner. The funny name and logo drew us…read morein, then once we saw it was ice cream, AND dairy free, we were IN. We have been extremely loyal customers ever since. They rotate flavors, but through many months and many visits I don't think I've ever tried a bad one. The flavors are also very fun, not your typical cookies and cream, cookie dough, etc. Although they do have a plain version sometimes. The employees are very helpful and kind letting you sample the flavors. Our absolute favorite is tinky winky- ube flavored ice cream with honey comb pieces. They also sell points to the side- take advantage. You'll want more when you're done! The ambiance and vibe of bad Walter's is perfect. Bright colors, disco ball dripping, fun sayings on the cups, the whole 9 yards. The take home pint we got has Reddit "hate" comments and their responses, it's hilarious. This ice cream store is way more of a vibe than any marketing agent could dream of. Who would've thought I wish I could be a rep for an ice cream company? Oh and they also do a stamp card when you buy pints to get a free scoop. You bring in the containers so they can recycle them. It's a win win for both sides, loves it. Best ice cream ever!!!

Over the intervening years, I've visited on an irregular basis branching out to other tempting flavors. I've never had a bad flavor among the dozens they offer at any one time. Honestly it's all great. I have to admit I had an unintentional moratorium since their original location on Harrison in the Mission sadly closed more than a year ago, so I was pleased to patronize their tiny Elmwood location. The $6.25 single cup of Pumpkin Galette was a nice, creamy treat on a brisk winter evening (Photo 6). On a subsequent visit, I went for one of my favorite guilty pleasures, Vietnamese Coffee (Photo 5). Seventeen years and still going strong.
