I actually did not get a tattoo here! but I was in a pinch after getting a tattoo at another shop - the covering for my tattoo had come undone and I was in the area before going to the airport and needed a fresh covering. I stopped by to ask for help and Leo happily cleaned the area for me and got me safely on my way and was super kind and helpful. Myself and two of my friends were on vacation in Maui and wanted to get a small commemorative tattoo. We picked something super fine line and simple, very small. The experience was great, the studio was clean and our artist Roberto was very communicative and thoughtful during the process. We were told about the shop minimum being $150, and we agreed it was worth the price for a good tattoo. Months later we all realized that our tattoos are really poorly done! They're all different thickness, very patchy and incomplete line work. Not to mention they're all a different shape and don't look like the stencil. We all have other tattoos and are very familiar with the healing process, this is beyond. We loved the shop and Roberto was great during the session, but we will have to now pay another artist to get these fixed because they're so so so poorly done. Very disappointed in the work and I'm bummed to have to leave this review because we had so much fun and really enjoyed the time there. read more

I came to this establishment after leaving another local parlor in the area. There was no walk in availability so I made an appointment for a consult later in the week. Consult occurred and deposit paid. Appointment scheduled for this afternoon (1 week later). I made arrangements in my life to be on time and prepared. Upon arrival the door was locked and a sign indicated the equipment was being cleaned! Great l am impressed with sanitation procedures . However when I knocked it was clear, the equipment wasn't being cleaned. The artist wasn't prepared nor remembered our appointment. He was frazzled and rushed In attempt to get situated for me. This was a red flag for me. He then was sharing why he was late and his medical situation. I recalled he mentioned this at the consult and I inquired if he was capable to do the job and he assured me he was. So we wait while he is getting his bearings and he tells me he now realizes I'm not there for a consult. I'm there for an actual session and my design isn't drawn. He offers me to wait and says it won't take long. Red flag 2 I'm not feeling comfortable with someone putting permanent ink on me when they are clearly not prepared and appearing rushed. I expressed my discomfort and he shared that he wants me to be comfortable and I could reschedule. All I wanted was a small piece of work to honor my father. I have never had to go through such an ordeal to have any ink done. Thank goodness I'm local because no tourist could be coming back and forth. What a waste of our time I do realize everyone has things happen but a professional could've called and explained they were running behind. We ended up getting our non refundable deposit back and Davin clearly looked like he was glad to be rid of us as well. That is how I felt based on how he handed the money back to us. So I cancelled my evening affairs to keep this appointment and I leave with nothing done and the quest to find another tattoo artist/establishment that can help me get what I want in a quick turn around. I had read a previous negative review but I wanted to give him a shot. I'm not saying Davin or Hula girl is a bad place. I'm just advising that you make sure that your appointment is confirmed and maybe call before heading out to ensure you're good to go. I'm so disappointed as I was really looking forward to this piece of art as I wanted it completed and healed before my fathers services. Edit: turns out a miscommunication was the issue and I enjoyed my tattoo and experience here! Just be prepared time wise if you want work done here. I'd give them 3.5 stars if I could for their r good response time to my review, & their consideration was great. Still though having to wait over 1.5 hours from my scheduled appointment time is still a disappointment that I had to use up my last evening on vacation waiting for a few hours even with an appointment to get a tattoo! I really was looking forward to enjoying my tattoos & experience at hula girl while on my honeymoon trip. Whilst being a service provider my self, I understand that sometimes you run late and that's that. my appointment was at 3, and didn't get worked on until around 6:20 or so. It felt welcoming enough I could hang out and the vibes were great. Loved that! We talked over what I wanted and he said okay, but the next clients came in for their appointment at 4:30. Asking if he had anyone else after them, I volunteered to wait for my tattoos so these clients could get what they had planned done on time. Since it seemed all of us were leaving the island that day! I understand it was a Saturday afternoon/evening and the artist may have plans later that night. But as a service provider too if I'm late, I don't compromise my work for the sake of getting out when I wanted to. Once the 4:30 clients were done. The artist then told me he had no time to do the medium sized piece we agreed on and could only do the two smaller (3 digit number) tattoos and maybe one small flower. I've followed this artists Instagram for a while and set this up the week of and gave notice through instagram months before! So it was definitely a let down not only NOT getting the piece I wanted, but also ran over appointments (which I was very considerate in waiting for the other guests to finish ontime) to the point where now I couldn't get what I wanted done because he was running late for his plans after work. But we compromised on something in his flash work off the wall. After my flower & numbers were done, my husband was also going to get the same small number tattoo I had. The artist asked if I was a couple with my husband, which we obviously were. I'm pretty we also mentioned we were just ending our honey moon! So I said yes we are together. He then asked me if he could use the SAME NEEDLE (with the edit now it's said he asked if we wanted the same size needle, but the word size wasn't mentioned) to do my husbands small number tattoo. read more

Synopsis: This was my first tattoo - I am extremely happy I went here, Marc exceeded all of my expectations and I already want another one! Details: Parlor - The whole place is very clean and comfortable. They do have AC. One of the nice touches was that they offered to let me choose music that would make me comfortable. I was the only one in the shop at the time, so this is probably not a reasonable expectation for customers to get but that offer is indicative of their all around efforts to make customers feel comfortable and happy. Service - This was my first tattoo, and Marc was great with me. He explained everything before he did it, did multiple checks at various points to ensure that our visions were in sync, and even though I loved every choice he made he always offered to make changes if I wasn't happy with where things were going. There was no intimidation or trying to rush me through the process to get paid. Marc took his time to ensure the best product and customer satisfaction and it showed in the results. He did small things like change out his gloves between colors and even at one point changed needles for colors just to be absolutely sure there was no color crossover. He also checked the reference art frequently and repeatedly to make sure I got what I asked for and it shows. Through the whole process I knew I was in good hands and that my needs were being addressed first. Product - My tattoo is phenomenal. I wanted a challenging piece with lots of solid color blocks and straight lines. I don't think anyone could have transferred that image better than Marc did. The line work is amazing and the packed the color in beautifully. It truly looks like a sticker, which is exactly what I wanted and he delivered. Such an amazing hidden gem! I went with my friends and we walked in and payed for a deposit and I wasn't sure if I'd get one. Then I last minute decided to and Davin said he could do it in 30 minutes in which he did such a quick and efficient job, but with quality. I don't even know where to start, it's too long of a story but.....DO NOT ALLOW DAVIN TO TATOO YOU OR ANYONE YOU LOVE. The guy is so unorganized and unprofessional. He had me and my daughters father running around for over an hour to spend our own money on gathering bandages wraps supplies etc. He also took over eight hours to complete the worst tattoo that I've ever seen on my than 16-year-old daughter! What took him eight hours to complete this mess. It then took a talented and professional tattoo artist 50 minutes to fix it. (See pics below) The man who fixed this was shocked and angry at what Davin did. I have tried reaching out to Davin on many occasions and he always is somehow too sick or too busy or has bad phone reception or gastrointestinal distress or whatever to discuss this. Tattoos are permanent and if done incorrectly can affect you for the rest of your life. He also is blaming his crappy work on the fact that my daughter was moving the whole time. This is absolutely not the case. The other thing he is telling his boss is that I insisted that he come in even though he told me he was sick... this is a complete lie! I would never never expose my daughter to anybody during the early days of Covid before vaccines and before they were even a lot of KN 95 masks around. I brought a mask in to give to Davin to wear when he was working on her. (Anyone who knows me would agree I'd NEVER go near anyone who said they were sick..now and especially back then) Also, he is an independent contractor not an employee. He has full control when he works and why. If he was truly sick he should NEVER work on anyone in case he gets others sick or it may affect the quality of the Tatoo. As an independent contractor Davin gets to reschedule at his convenience. There is zero accountability on his part. I don't like to give bad reviews but this is now to stand up for myself and to PROTECT others from this guy. See before and after pics the after was done at Rootz tattoo in Kihei. I was staying in Paia on vacation and had looked at Hula Girl Tattoo's website a couple times. A Blue Jay and a Northern Cardinal tattoo had really caught my eye. They were beautifully done. So toward the end up my trip while shopping around in town, I decided to stop in and see if maybe the person who had done those tattoos had an opening before I was leaving. Just my luck, the artist who had done them, Marc Perez, was there and had openings right then. Marc is a truly incredible artist. Looking at his portfolio, it was obvious that he was skilled in all styles of tattoos. And his paintings were amazing too! Plus he was so easy to work with. He listened very carefully to everything I had to say, bounced a couple of his own ideas off of me and delivered a tattoo that was even more beautiful than I could have imagined. My little i'iwi bird tattoo is beyond perfect. Bonus points for being incredibly light handed. I've had some artists that feel like they're digging into your skin, but I practically dozed off while getting my tattoo done. If you're in Paia and looking not only to get a tattoo, but looking for a relaxed and comfortable tattoo experience, definitely go to Hula Girl and ask for Marc! The only con is that he lives all the way in Hawai'i instead of Seattle. I would go to him for all of my tattoos if I could! read more

Got my nose pierced by Anthony on my final day in Maui. I called Hula Girl around 3 hoping to get in for a walk in nose piercing, which went perfectly! Anthony squeezed me in before another scheduled appointment at 4 which I highly appreciate! Overall, the place was nice and clean but it didn't feel like the most welcoming space because of the staff. I'm not sure if it was because I called earlier asking if they do walk in nose piercings or if it was just the general atmosphere day to day but I definitely felt like I was a burden. I also found it weird that they didn't let me pick out my own nose stud gem color etc. It would have been nice to have the option to communicate what I was looking for rather than feeling pressured into a stud that was already decided. I understand that it's a common stud for nose piercings but I think others would appreciate choosing on their own as well. The piercing itself was way less painful than I thought. Anthony did such a great job at walking my through the steps and cleaning up the mess. He also provided me an aftercare sheet and his business card! read more

CURTIS IS THE BEST. Walked in with a few ideas , and he immediately started drawing right in front of me. He drew a custom tattoo for me in like 15 minutes while we (my group) were discussing things we liked and didn't like and he listened to all of the ideas. I came to Maui with my wife in the beginning of May after my first six rounds of chemo treatments. I told myself if I ever came to Hawaii I would at least get a tattoo on the Island. After researching and coming to the shop I decided to go with Hula Girl Tattoo. Anthony was my tattoo artist and he did a kick ass job. He freehanded my tattoo and the lines are extremely clean and crisp. Everybody there is pleasant the shop is extremely clean and it's always kick ass to sit in a chair and have the view of the ocean while you are getting your work done. I will 100 percent come back and get more work done. I will be starting more chemo treatments in July so I am going to travel back to Maui with my son on June 7 so him and I can enjoy some father-son time just in case, because I don't know what the outcome of these chemo treatments will do this time.
