Felt right at home here - the warm and friendly atmosphere and the eclectic music playlist. I had me a delicious smoothie and asked the waitress to throw in some booster shots. Hungover on New Year's Day and in need of some warmth and a drink, we hunted down Hula after checking Yelp for suggestions. Located in a great spot for tourists checking out key areas in the city, it's in an ideal spot. It looked warm and bright from the outside so we headed in with ideas of coffee and cake. They were able to accommodate five of us in a back room that you wouldn't know existed if just looking in from the outside. Decorated with lots of cute pictures of animals it was a fun place to spend an hour warming up, reliving tales of Hogmanay and cure our weary bodies. Once we glanced at the menus we all swiftly changed from wanting coffees to wanting to try something from their extensive juice and smoothie menu. I opted for a delicious and zingy smoothie of Apple, lime, ginger and lemon, with an added energy shot of guarana and ginseng. Just what the doctor ordered! They had some lovely gluten free cakes on offer, but my smoothie was sufficient for me. Some of my friends got cakes though and really enjoyed them. The smoothies very tasty and healthy, though a tad expensive at £5 for a large. We were pleased to find we could unlock a 10% off code when checking in on the Yelp app and so we had that knocked off our bill. Every little helps. This is a really cute, wholesome cafe. This is officially now one of my favorite places to eat in Edinburgh! I had the Harissa Chicken Sourdough Sandwich and a cappuccino, both absolutely delicious, and then I finished it off with a carrot cake that was divine. I'm not a huge smoothie fan, but I popped in here and was quite happy. Hula is a smallish cafe just off the Grassmarket, and is loosely themed on Hawaii. I saw loosely because the decor consisted of a few hula skirts. They offer a range of smoothies and will even add anti oxidants or energy boosts to your chosen drink. I had a Betty Ford smoothie, which I think was banana, peach and I'm going to say strawberry. See that is why I'm not a huge smoothie fan, because they all taste the same no matter what you put in them. After I ordered I noticed Tiffin Milkshake was the special of the day and was gutted I hadn't gone for that. The nice girl made the smoothie in front of me while multi tasking by serving the people seated as well. Hula also do sandwiches and soup so great for a quick lunch. Not too overpriced either considering it is in tourist territory. read more

Hoorah! Ok, yes, lame wordpun, I'm Dutch, go with it. So, after a long absence I went by Hula again for a proper juice and lo-and-behold: they have changed the chairs and benches to fit people of my legginess! Ooooh. I am a very, very happy camper indeed. I had the soup and my girl-date had the bagel with added bacon, nom, and the Pink Lady Juice. It was absolutely hilarious to see her geek out over such delicious flavours, as she had never been to Hula before. I think the terms "Seventh Heaven" and "Organic Squee" were mentioned. I'm pretty sure that Hula has a new regular customer! My soup was lovely, and my Dutch sensibilities were sufficiently freaked out by eating soup out of a bowl on a slope (this is scary to me, my country is flat) to not notice the somewhat less comfy seating outside on the terrace. I love this place, and what they stand for. The healthiness of it, the organic nature. I love it. What's not to love? I'll clearly be back again. If I'd have to suggest something, it'd be that the waiting staff, though lovely, needs some organisation. There was no menu for us to order at the counter, and the waiting staff seemed incredibly frazzled running all over the place, but it was a Saturday, and that might have been why. Either way, they're friendly, if a little frazzled, and that's all I care about. Go here? STAY here, that's my advice. read more

Second time in - first since the redesign- and didn't disappoint food-wise. Smoked salmon bagel and the granola, yogurt and banana really good. The fresh juice was nice - I went for a carrot, orange and ginger combo- though I'm not a fan of lots of sediment in my juices so took a bit of dental sieving to finish it off. I really need to toughen up!! Obviously Hula is as popular as ever, mobbed today (bank holiday Monday) and perhaps the only real downside was I felt the staff were running to stand still. My juice arrived after I'd finished my bagel and my partner's coffee midway through her breakfast. Staff were very apologetic about the wait and you could tell this wasn't the norm. Looking forward to my next visit - this really is an oasis in an otherwise fairly arid Cafe landscape. read more

Fine food and tasty smoothies. When I went, I had a smoked salmon salad and berry smoothie. Both were quite nice, but not totally worth the steep prices. If a smoothie is over £3, it should come with a small prize. The menu wasn't too exciting, either. I found the decor mildly horrendous. I think in large part because the flower decals look exactly like the floral fabric of those 'Hawaiian' themed backpacks everyone had when I was a kid. I just think it looks a bit naff and dated in there. Maybe I'd be more impressed if I tried a different dish. I'm still planning on going back, it just isn't my favorite and I don't really understand the hype. read more

We were lucky to get a seat, the place was packed! I had a lovely lentil and bacon soup with freshly baked bread and pot of green tea. This cafe has a quaint relaxed feel, my deck chair was a little uncomfortable as the pillow I was sat on had long past its best. It's also a little cramped, which makes it awkward for customers trying to get past tables to find a seat. The staff were very friendly and attentive, I also think its value for money. While they do advertise free WiFi, I couldn't access it at the back if the cafe. I'm still giving them 4 stars as the proof is in the number of customers they had in and the quality of their food was excellent. read more

As one of the few predominant vegan options in Edinburgh, we had high hopes for Hula, so much so that we came back to the restaurant on 4 different occasions during the month of August. The Food: fresh ingredients, tasty and decently prepared. The Service: waitresses are uninformed about the food that they are serving. Not only are the ingredients in the food not listed on the menu, when you ask the waitresses what is in the food they don't know. We asked about the mixed veggies in one of the sandwiches and the waitress couldn't even tell us whether it was cooked or raw. When we asked what was in it she listed the wrong ingredients and we spoke with her 3 different times before she finally went and asked. I ordered the rainbow bowl and it came with ingredients different than what was listed on the board and different than what the waitress told me. On another occasion we ordered the vegan poke bowl and it came with avocado smash which we didn't order. When we asked her if we'd be charged for it she looked confused and then informed us that they were out of tofu and automatically replaced it, only asking if it was okay after we'd been served. If you have food allergies, I would absolutely avoid this restaurant. Ps: it was different wait staff each time. Tldr: the food was good if you don't mind not knowing what you're getting, but not worth the rude and incompetent service. read more

I have often passed Hula and finally decided to go in with my son. I had a cafe latte and my son had the porridge with blueberries and honey. He thoroughly enjoyed the combo and it was so nice to relax and enjoy a nice latte. The staff were very kind and attentive and very child friendly. At one point there were juice bars every where it felt like. Hula seems to have been here for ages. I often make a point of popping in on sunny days, hang over days etc for a take away juice to energise while wandering around town. The juices are great, not inexpensive and not expensive. Staff seem nice enough. I haven't tried the food but it looks nice if a little pricy for a sandwich. All in nice place with great juice. read more

I walked by it one day and was like this place looks awesome and actually later that day I was with a walking tour and we stopped there. Really great customer service, and the Espresso Macchiato was really good too, I bet this place makes you smile when you walk in on a cold, wet day. Have been here twice, once just for coffee and another time for breakfast. The coffee is done very, very well. Lots of character in the main part of the cafe but I was seated in the side room which had no atmosphere and had terrible acoustics. Seated quickly and the service was prompt but wish I'd waited for a table in the main part. The decor is bright and funky, the art work being displayed is up for sale. I Ordered the soup of the day mushroom with Stilton, it was accompanied with cheese on toast which was very tasty as the cheese was Mull of Kintyre. The bagel with baked ham and Mull of Kintyre cheese was good also. Hula is cute, quick and affordable - the lunch time menu soup and bagel/wrap is super cheap and filling. Smoothies are lovely too! If you're looking for a quick and quite healthy fix for lunch I'd definitely recommend this place. The Popeye juice is my favourite! read more

In a town of haggis, potatoes, fish and chips, the option of detox and immune "boosters" is a refreshing break!
