Lovely day raking for clams and gathering/shucking oysters at Duckabush River. In partnership with the Pantry, a community meal including oysters and clams was cooked by expert chefs! I appreciated very much the opportunity to slow down and become aware of the intimate connection with the earth and its creatures. Awaken the Hunter with Bruce McGlenn was an incredible experience. Doing it alongside one of my closest friends--who I hadn't seen in over five years--made it even more special. Being immersed in the Washington wilderness, learning hands-on skills, and reconnecting to nature and where food truly comes from was powerful. Field dressing and butchering the goat was a real highlight. Eating that same meat throughout the week made the process tangible and meaningful. For me personally, there was an emotional journey in witnessing the taking of a life and honoring it by turning it into food. We were also well fed with amazing meals throughout each day, all prepared by Jim, the chef during the whole experience. I successfully hunted my first squirrel, got in some rifle practice, and was introduced to the basics of tracking. I also connected with others who were on their own journey to learn more about hunting, which added to the sense of shared purpose and depth. Bruce is a deep, present, and grounded teacher. Human Nature Hunting School offers more than a class on hunting. It's a 4 day intensive introspective on what it means to be a part of nature. For thousands of years our answers survived by being in tune with the seasons, animals, and signs of the land. This connection inspired many a myth and legend that reflect our ancestors respect for nature, and the stewardship they saw vital to survival. Bruce, Sara, Charlie, and MarieLee provided excellent opportunities to experience and learn through instruction, hands on field work, and evening reflections as they gave each of us insight into a traditional hunting camp. The food we ate came from a mix of vegetable grown on their homestead, and the meat we processed ourselves. I might not go off and be a butcher, but I now know my cuts of meat better than ever. "Is the hunter more human than its descendants?" That was one of the quotes that Bruce shared with the group on our first morning together, and it set the tone for the entire course. I took the course in June, and months later I am still ruminating over this question. I had sought out this course as a way to feed my ever increasing desire to be outdoors and self-sufficient. In a lot of ways, the course was exactly what I expected it to be - an introduction to the many components of hunting: trip planning, tracking & shooting, wilderness survival, field dressing & butchering, etc. All of the HNH team are incredibly knowledgeable, and I found myself wanting to write down nearly every piece of wisdom that came out of their mouths. What I did not expect was that I would spend most of the weekend reexamining so much of my world view and how my choices do or do not align with it. I came for the hard skills, but whenever we finished building fires or field dressing, my thoughts would always drift back to the bigger questions that were raised that first morning: The idea of "intelligent tinkering" or keeping all of the pieces, and how that applies to our commercialization of food production. The notion of the "gift exchange", and the value of knowing and respecting the origins of our food, rather than feeling entitled to it. And, of course, whether or not we have lost something that makes us human by moving away from our primal hunter roots, and how we might remedy that in this modern world. The course structure was fluid and flexible, always leaving plenty of time to reflect and lean into these thoughts, both internally and with the rest of the group. We had many good conversations, during sunrises and sunsets, over meals and over campfires. What a gift it was to experience a space such as the HNH property, to see life as it could be if we lived more in harmony with nature. Add to that a group of like-minded individuals all hungry to learn and discuss some of life's big questions - it truly was a uniquely immersive and powerful experience. P.S. Another unexpected delight was the food! I have never eaten better while camping. Actually, I'm not sure I've ever eaten better, period. read more

What an amazing experience! My family of four drove up to Kettle Falls from Williams, Oregon for the family Awaken the Hunter Course. It's hard to put the experience into a short review. Not only was the experience itself fun, challenging and memorable, but I now feel much more confident to make my back-country hunting dreams a reality. Both my kids (12 and 17) had a fantastic time, and my daughter discovered that she's quite a good shot. ;) My son didn't want to leave! The food was yummy, and the course was a good mix of lessons and experiential activities. The small group size and warmth of Bruce and his family make for a very sweet, community feeling. This is one of the first times in writing a review that I wish you could rate higher than 5 stars. If you are on the fence about signing on with one of the courses; DO IT! I guarantee you will not regret this choice. I went with my 11 year old son and we had the best time. My son says this was his all time favorite trip. When arriving, we were a bit anxious about who else would be there and if we would all hit it off. Rest assure Bruce has a way of bringing everyone together. By the time we left, it all felt like family. As for the learning curriculum, it's bar none the best. I got what I was looking for. I feel confident enough to go out with my son and I, and have our own hunt. But just the same, we will return to human nature to continue our journey! read more

Tap in to your ancestral roots and have fun along the way! I completed the 'Awaken the Hunter' course as someone who has never hunted or even fished before. I began to have a growing interest in hunting as I started digging deeper into sustainable and ethical food sources. Great experience! I learned a lot, got some wonderful instruction on not only hunting but outdoor skills, foraging, processing meat, ethics, observation, gear...and learned a lot about myself in the process. Great for someone new to hunting who might be thinking of trying it out, families, and people who are interested and need more information. The shellfishing course is also highly recommended.
