Fantastic with a small hiccup. Let's get into this, The total experience was fantastic, we had josh as an instructor who was very professional and attentive. We did a personal training night for my wife and I for her birthday. The place was very clean and well organized. Josh our instructor was prepared to deal with us and just made our night great. The only issue that I have was that making the contact with the business was almost impossible. I must have called every day for a week and left messages to try and set up the date. I emailed with no response. The only thing that worked was taking some time and visiting to set something up. All in all the experience was totally worth the hassle, I strongly recommend this place. By the way they are totally following Covid-19 guidelines so grab your mask and try it out. read more

My friend and I took a class using a Groupon. Always wanted to try archery. It was hard to start but once I got a hang of it, I enjoyed it very much and my skill improved. Our instructor was knowledgeable and guided us well through the process. We progressed through the initial target practice and before we knew it were aiming at balloons which was hard but fun. Managed to pop all balloons quickly. My fingers got great exercise as did other parts of my upper body. Posture is important as is the attention to detail and safety. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is curious about archery! I plan on returning for open target practice next door. Highly recommend this. Go with your spouse or friends and learn something new. It's an hour of your life well invested. You can one up your friends by bragging about your new found skills! read more

If you've ever felt the desire to awaken your inner Katniss Everdeen or Green Arrow, this place is for you! For $55 on Groupon, my boyfriend and I purchased a one hour class-- about $10 cheaper than regular price. Considering we were there with just one other couple, the price was a steal. Our instructor was super chill, humorous, and engaging. With just the four of us to teach, he really took the time to watch what we were doing and correct us throughout class. We were a bit surprised about being in an indoor studio but it turned out to be really fun! The floor was lined with tape indicating distances of 5, 7, 10 yards and we were perfectly set up for sets of practices and games. The hour of class honestly went by way too quickly-- I LOVED when we got to play cut throat and shoot at balloons, and winning even more ;) Prep wise, call to schedule your class at least a week in advance because these guys are busy. Wear comfy clothes that aren't too loose fitting, tie up long hair, and be ready to work those arms! read more

I have been wanting to take archery lessons for months after finding out that there are ranges in WA, so I finally dragged my friend and husband along with me to the second-closest archery range to us in Seattle. I have heard questionable things about the mask compliance and vaccine refusal at another local range, so I was relieved to see signs requiring them before even entering this building! Registering online was quick and easy; it doesn't seem like they have slots for weekend private lessons sadly. One thing to note about this location is that it's not immediately obvious that it is here because of the signage, and the fact that it is connected to an archery store. We actually accidentally stumbled into the archery store, and the man working there was SO kind to personally take the time to lead us to the right place! He will never reclaim that 30 seconds of his life back and I do appreciate it. When we arrived we were greeted by Joel, who meticulously picked out the perfect equipment for us and suited us up- He was so patient while we asked questions and were generally those annoying new archers who have no concept of an appropriate noise level to maintain in a public space. I can tell that he's a wealth of knowledge but didn't seem annoyed at all when we picked his brain about very important subjects, such as how many times he's seen someone get shot. We started by shooting at a close distance, then slowly moved back and incorporated more equipment and games throughout the lesson. We all had a ridiculous amount of fun! read more

Booked a one-hour "Intro to archery" course for me and my wife. Our instructor John was knowledgeable and patient. His feedback regarding our form was helpful and easy to understand, and he was receptive to our questions. The reason we booked the course in the first place was to prep for a group event with several of our friends. Eight of us showed up for a private lesson and we got John as our instructor again. We had varying levels of archery expertise, and John seemed good about tailoring his feedback to our skill level. In addition to the lesson he introduced target games, followed by an hour and a half of archery tag. It was a great experience overall, and I'm happy to come back. A low note: the website used to reserve group events is clunky and frustrating. I think the webpage failed to load a couple times for me. read more

I made reservations for my boyfriends birthday for 12 people. We had the range in the upper left side of the building and no one was there besides our group and the instructors. After a quick equipment fitting and instructions we had over an hour and a half of shooting. The girl that was instructing us was really young, but seemed pretty knowledgeable to us newbies. I recently took a class with John and loved every single second of it! This was something I've been wanting to do for YEARS and finally decided to go for it. I'm so glad I did. John was patient, informative, funny and moved quickly enough that there were no lulls in class. Our instructor, John, was phenomenal! I was hesitant when my husband said, 'let's go try an archery class.' but he made it really fun. Of course we went over safety first which was great, then we practiced some technique. We even played a game after we got pretty good. The teacher was funny, witty, and a great instructor. It's been about a decade since I've done club archery, so my husband and I decided to sign up for one of the date night lessons to reacquaint ourselves with shooting recurve. I would highly recommend lessons at Next Step Archery! Mintea especially was an AMAZING instructor! They helped us pick out the right bows for us and had really excellent tips for form and answered -all- of my questions (no matter how silly they felt). Based on the positive reviews, it looks like you can have a positive experience here, but I think a lot of that depends on the coach you or your group gets paired with. I've now attended two archery tag and target archery events in April of 2018 and 2019, both under the lead of coach John. Next Step Archery is set up well and the events itself were fun, though it seemed like coach John was determined to make the event stressful and the learning counter-intuitive, for both newcomers and experienced archers. John teaches under the guise of safety and form, so long as it does not compete with what seem like this first goals of condescending and asserting his dominance as the master in the room. In both of my group event activities, we felt John treated us like children that he was yearning to reprimand, rather than adults he could trust and teach. In our Archery Tag group, one of our members had multiple years of experience, yet John proceeded to roll his eyes and condescend at her shooting style and gear preferences. He scoffed at her use of finger guards and used a "teaching" style of aggressively asking questions to find gaps in knowledge. The purpose of this seemed to be humiliation and to make himself seem superior, rather than education of the group. In our group, it seemed John was more willing to listen to the men and didn't seem to accept that a female would know what they're talking about. John constantly singled out individual archers to shame them for form issues -- rather than informing them on how to correct posture, he made a point to mock them by exaggerating their form back to them. He was overly physical with how he would grab and position archers. This happened often and without warning -- often when a simple comment would have sufficed to make an archer more aware with the position of their body. On a separate occasion for a bachelor party, John would call those shooting with form issues "little pansy girls." During the same private event, he stopped the game after hearing someone let out a "curse word" because of the excitement of the game. Rather than reminding the group to keep swearing to a minimum, he demanded to know which one of us swore, then threatened that individual with "timeout" if he heard someone accidentally swear again. In our experience, there is no room for mistakes or learning in one of these classes taught by this coach, unless you're someone who is able to learn through humiliation and mockery. Having come twice more than 12 months apart, this can't be a coincidence. It's disappointing, because I have friends who have had very positive experiences with other coaches. There is no doubt that John is a talented archer and knows where he's talking about when it comes to the sport, but in my opinion, this coach should be properly trained on communication so that he can reach the same level of teaching skill as the other coaches at NSA. read more

I booked a private group event recently. I spoke to a very nice staff member over the phone who was incredibly polite and patient with all of my questions, which involved seeing how comfortable it would be for both beginners and intermediate shooters of the group, coordinating time availability (as they had another group interested in coming in on the same day and called to let me know of the overlap), and a kind reminder to not forget the date. However the instructor we had, John, was the complete opposite. Although he was thorough in explaining range rules, he was exceedingly condescending to everyone but infinitely more so with the women of the group. Often he would jump to immediately correct or reprimand them if they at all seemed to do something incorrectly or about to *maybe* do something incorrectly, often going up to them and touching them without any warning or permission when a simple demonstration would have been fine. While it wasn't with a strong grip, he would grab the women by the arm or wrist to correct their movement when it was completely unnecessary. The men in our group commented that they noticed John would at least in comparison give them space or a few more chances, would only touch them on the shoulder or not at all, or give only minor comments. They found John's behavior to be inappropriate and rude to everyone. John would also talk over the women speaking or asking questions, despite saying that questions were allowed. The group soon understood afterward to not bother asking questions, unless it was to make a joke with each other. John relaxed with his attitude towards the last quarter of the event, but without fail, succeeded in adding at least one last condescending remark to most of us before our group left. My first experience here three years ago for a private lesson with my boyfriend was fantastic, but was with a different instructor that I unfortunately forgot the name of. He was a younger fellow and was very patient, and helped inspire me to pursue archery officially although elsewhere only because of commute difficulties. If you are looking for instruction or to gain insight in archery, I recommend it with literally anyone else but John. Although our group had fun overall that day, it was because of our own dynamics and protecting each other from John's condescending remarks, and by lightening the mood between rounds. We enjoyed archery very much and plan to continue together, but due to John's inappropriate and unprofessional behavior, we will not be pursuing this location again for future events or lessons. read more

Archery tag itself seemed really fun...if we could actually play. John was persistent with demonstrating his dominance and trying to suck all of the fun out of the game. We continually needed to stop the game abruptly so he can walk up to somebody and tell them how they're sucking or not following one of his thousand rules. I recommend this activity if someone other than John is facilitating the activity. He's probably a good guy, or maybe he's better with one on one lessons, but archery tag is not his strong suit...teaching more than one person shouldn't ever be a thing he's allowed to do. read more

Did this for a team event and it was really fun. They take the safety stuff super seriously (which is nice), but we also had fun even though most of us couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 10 feet away. There were a couple of different things they had us do (shoot from different lines, shoot at moving balloons, etc) and we all learned a bit about how to shoot. No complaints, and definitely a unique team event space or birthday party option. read more

We were both excited but during the class, the instructor was rude and talked down to us when we weren't sure about certain things. It's as if he expected us to know everything on the first time. Archery? Yes, my first time. Surprising it was a BLAST!! I came here with my company for a team builder and it was all that we did! We booked a private party and the guy who guided us was very nice and definitely knows that he's doing. Had a great sense of humor. Only gave this a 3 * because we were not greeted immediately, our guide was on the phone with his mortgage company and we waited for about 20 minutes but after that and the place was a bit hard to find. My husband, two of our kids, and I have been taking classes here since September. We did the 101 class, and now private lessons as the classes sessions did not fit our schedule. We have loved it! The instructors are great. Young, but experienced, knowledgeable, patient, and observant. They will find what you are doing wrong and correct it right away. It is a small business, maybe family run? That means that things are done a lot more casually. That can be good and bad! So far it hasn't caused us any issues. We have gone to The Nock Point next door and were blown away by all the stuff there. Admittedly, we haven't been to other archery stores and can't compare but it was good sized and filled with all sorts of goodies. Everyone has been great to work with and very accommodating and relaxed. I hope to keep getting lessons here and eventually get our own bows to shoot for fun or maybe competition. read more

I had private lessons x2 here and a few free time sessions (I can't remember which one Next Step is, but they have a sister store next door so I'm writing in regards to both). Though they don't necessarily cheer on the use of a leather horse bow, they were accommodating and still shared with me what knowledge they could which helped me improve a LOT! I went from all over the map to being able to be more consistent with creating groupings, even if at least liner. I've definitely hit a specific target a few times and wouldn't have been able to without their guidance! Thanks for existing! read more

This is a great place to learn archery. They have numerous coaches, offer numerous types of lessons. In class environment, private lessons, and individual coaching is all available. I was having a team event here. Generally speaking, it was fun to play with my colleagues and friends. However, several observations: 1. The room is too small and not well setup at all. Hopefully that's something could be improved. 2. The instructor (Mike? Sorry I got a bad memory for people's names) was super rude and bad-behaved. I read some review said "He may come off sounding like a a-hole, but he has to make sure you and everyone else in there is safe.". But the truth is even he was being jerk all the time, people still got hurt in the field and that was actually not the bad thing. I was sitting off the field and almost got hit by arrows couple of times, which kind of gave me the feeling that room is too small. The instructor overall behaved like he was the king in his turf, giving you hard time when raise questions, criticizing you for what you did not do and you cannot argue because of "the rule". If you are well knowledgeable about archery then this place might be a fit, I don't know. But I do know if you and your friends want to have some fun, definitely DO NOT go to this place. John, the instructor, was the worst!!! :( Huge thumbs down to him!! Several co-workers and myself were doing a team-building event and John made it an awful experience. Just as we would get the momentum going playing a game, attempting to have fun, John would yell at the top of his lungs, "STOP! YOU, PICK THAT UP! DON'T MOVE! LISTEN TO ME OR ELSE..., DON'T DO THAT!" and on and on.... John was patronizing, demeaning, disrespectful and down-right rude!!! It took us great patience and hope that it would get better, not to walk out the door!!! The facility and equipment are decent, but John needs to find a new job. He was a BIG DOWNER!! :( read more

Am I the only person who cannot get a hold of this company by phone?! I had a Groupon but got a refund because it was about to expire. I assumed I had no luck getting a hold of this company to make a reservation since few months ago. Once I told the gentleman who finally called close to 9:30pm after several attempts that day, he yells "why?!" (So awkward!) I explained I've tried several times calling them, leaving a voicemail but I didn't think I was going to be able to redeem the Groupon. He continues to yell in frustration telling me that he's made attempts on calling me and that it was my fault that my phone is broken. He mentions with his raised voice that I could've reserved it online. However on the Groupon, it specifically writes that I need to call them to make reservations. He never stated his name, but he had no reason to begin yelling at a potential customer at 9:30pm on a weekend. I had to explain my situation while he continued to interrupt me throughout our conversation. It was only a miscommunication and he had no right to be yelling. Bad business, and horrible customer service. read more

The class was so fun and personalized to help us learn and develop a technique. It's 5 min from our home and we will definitely be coming back. read more

Best date night ever!! I'll never forget this evening. It was a private lesson in our own room with just myself, my boyfriend, and the wonderful instructor. It was the perfect balance of serious instruction and being silly. (Of course, with safety always being important.) Our instructor took a little while to warm up, but for most of the night he seemed to be having as much fun as we were! They had special "date" activities prepared for us, too, so be sure to use the term "date night" when you reserve. read more

My oldest daughter took a beginner class here and loved it. For the coaches and instructors 5 stars. For the business overall, 1 star as they do not seem to treat customers as a valued resource. My daughter was told a spot would be saved for her to move up to the next class and to simply register online. Class opens and the web site shows the class as full. I call to speak with them and get it fixed. 4 phone calls later I still don't have the promised call back from the 1 person who can handle the issue. Way too much work on my end to try and give them my $$$ and a huge disappointment to my daughter that she was lied to about having a spot held for her. I wish I could find another place for her to continue learning to shoot as she really enjoyed it but I won't give my $$$ to a company who doesn't value my time or me as a customer. read more

With all the Hunger Games mania, I planned an archery party for my twin boys' 10th birthday last year. It was terrific, if much more serious than I had anticipated. Watching glamorous actors shooting arrows in combat is pretty different from standing behind a taped line in a windowless gym as the coach pulls a metal arrow from the solid target to demonstrate how it penetrates to a depth of 8 inches. But it was magical in many ways, and I loved seeing how the boys were all very respectful and even a little awed at the beginning. To start we trooped into a small room where the bows are kept and each boy was called forward to receive his. The bows themselves are cool and modern like newly engineered skiis of bright composite materials, although one of my sons received a classical and simple wooden bow , why is still a mystery to me. We had 9 boys and that was a perfect number for guidance by John, the head coach and his 15- year old assistant, an avid practitioner and student of the academy. The place functions both as a specialized school and as a place to practice the sport. They are affiliiated with an outdoor target range for use by experienced practitioners but newbies start indoors, where they can be monitored more closely. John worked beautifully with the boys, he comes across as quite stern at first but he was kind and respectful to all, even one boy whose arrows were entirely missing the target. He worked with him in particular and I saw drastic improvement. Especially fun was the remote controlled car zipping across the gym with balloons attached and the boys would try to hit the balloons. The website states a 10 person minimum for parties, but NSA was flexible when I ended up with only 9 . AT $30 per head it wasn't cheap, but it was a great introduction to the sport. I was glad I had planned a sleepover later so the boys could freely indulge their wild, impulsive 10- year old boy behaviors. This was definitely a party experience of the sublimated sort but entirely memorable. If you are intrigued by the idea, go for it! read more
