Pike County is a NO KILL shelter that has had dogs there as long as 4-5 years and even adopted at that age. He was very honest with me that Biscuit was not housebroken so that there would be no misguided expectations. She's a wonderful dog and she's in the process of being trained and she's responding well. I love her to pieces and will be giving my yearly donation to Pike County going forward. The director of the shelter is often called away and there is only an office person to care for the animals. The shelter is small and crowded and certainly does not speak well for Wantage Township. I have lived in Wantage for over 25 years. I love the town. I love our home. But the Animal Shelter brings shame to the township. Quite frankly it needs to be rebuilt with adequate staff. Wantage Township is a large and prosperous town. Surely we can afford better. Presently I would refer to this shelter more as an animal jail than a shelter. If anyone reads this review and has time on their hands to volunteer to approach the Township to improve this shelter, please respond to this review. If you love animals, the ones in the Wantage Animal Shelter need our help. All you have to do is model a new shelter after Fr. John's Animal Shelter. They started small many years ago and are now a stellar example of rescue work.

Our first passed around three, she had cancer and it was tragic. Our current Rottweiler is 4 years old now and she's our whole world. The sweetest little love bug, much like our other two. While perusing Facebook, we came across an application for a young 1 year old female Rottweiler. This Rotty had been abandoned and left outside. We have never been through the process of adopting through a shelter. Granted, we did call, and they stated we couldn't just come and pick her up and that a meeting would have to be scheduled. We filled out the application but drove almost an hour one way, to see if there's anyway we could possibly meet her. We had full knowledge and understanding that we couldn't take the dog, and that the application process needed to be fulfilled. We love Rottweilers so much, if there was any chance to just meet this beautiful girl, we wanted to see her. Again as I stated before, we're completely new to this process. When we arrived we were greeted, not very nicely, by one of the staff members. We explained our situation and asked if there was any possible way of meeting the pup. Staff was rude, unprofessional, and stated the dog needed to "rest", and that there was no possibility of even seeing her. If that's the way things are done, that's fine, and we need to respect how these shelters do business. What shocked us was the horrendous email we received after we got home. The email reprimanded us for showing up at the shelter unannounced, like we were some evil abusive people. The email brazenly stated to "NOT" contact any members of the staff because they were "upset" that we showed up. We also got yelled at for bringing our sweet Rottweiler with us. We always travel with our dog... she comes in the car with us everywhere. It was stated that bringing another dog (our dog never even got out of our car) is "NEVER" the protocol. There's no information about this anywhere on the website, nor where we ever told this until we got this nasty email. It says , "by appointment only", on their website but again, post-covid, you have no idea who's actually doing real appointments or walk-ins and if there's a chance to rescue a dog that needs help, you take it. All of their procedures sound reasonable. The fact is that the way they handled this situation was disgusting and unprofessional. A great family, who has the means and funds to rescue a dog, especially a Rottweiler that's such a difficult and misunderstood breed, was turned away and treated like trash because we didn't follow protocols that we didn't even know were in place. We were told our application wouldn't even be processed. Again, we hold no ill will to the procedures of the shelter, I'm sure they are put in place for very important reasons. But to patronize and scold a young family trying to rescue an animal is a disgusting and unprofessional way to conduct this organization. I would never discourage any individuals from adopting animals from any shelter. I am however ashamed and simply astounded at the unprofessionalism and disregard for human dignity and respect from staff members. Don't use this shelter as your first choice.

Since January 20 23, they've taken in close to 400 local dogs that were either lost or needed placement into new homes due to circumstances beyond their control. The local SPCA is not associated with the ASPCA, but they are a small nonprofit that depends on funding from communities to keep the doors open and keep the employees paid to continue rescuing and saving and placing puppies and dogs into their forever homes.. the new board and all of the employees give a warm welcome to people coming in and take care of all the animals that are in the shelter as if they were their own. It's a beautiful facility and they do different charity events to help. Keep those doors open. The dogs that I adopted are the most perfect pups in the whole wide world and I may be a little bit biased because I love them so much. When my cat died, the Spca helped me with getting him cremated and we're so caring which really warmed my heart.

She referred someone to help us trap a feral cat in our neighborhood that just had 6 kittens and then took all seven of them into the shelter for spay/neutering and care. All the kittens were adopted and mama was returned to our neighborhood under our care. We were able to visit our feline family while they were cared for at the shelter. The shelter is clean and bright on the inside where the animals are kept and the staff and volunteers are wonderful in how they interact with all of the animals. They also have someone who works with the larger dogs on behavior and commands to improve their chances of adoption. When the time comes for us to adopt another dog (we prefer large breeds), the Wayne Animal Shelter will be our first stop.

Besides being a educational experience, I purchased various supplies for my new turtles. I have been back various times for turtle food.
