I have been involved in animal rescue all of my life. All our cats and dogs have come to us from a…read morerescue situation. I visited the Wantage Animal Shelter and frankly found it unpleasant. The director of the shelter is often called away and there is only an office person to care for the animals. The shelter is small and crowded and certainly does not speak well for Wantage Township. I have lived in Wantage for over 25 years. I love the town. I love our home. But the Animal Shelter brings shame to the township. Quite frankly it needs to be rebuilt with adequate staff. Wantage Township is a large and prosperous town. Surely we can afford better. Presently I would refer to this shelter more as an animal jail than a shelter. If anyone reads this review and has time on their hands to volunteer to approach the Township to improve this shelter, please respond to this review. If you love animals, the ones in the Wantage Animal Shelter need our help. All you have to do is model a new shelter after Fr. John's Animal Shelter. They started small many years ago and are now a stellar example of rescue work.

Pike County is a NO KILL shelter that has had dogs there as long as 4-5 years and even adopted at that age. He was very honest with me that Biscuit was not housebroken so that there would be no misguided expectations. She's a wonderful dog and she's in the process of being trained and she's responding well. I love her to pieces and will be giving my yearly donation to Pike County going forward. Please consider adopting a pet from Pike County or even a donation of any amount would help this hard working Shelter with caring volunteers.

Our 6 year old was especially enamored with the experience. While Tamerlaine is clearly a believer in animal rights, the tour wasn't pushy or judgemental at all in terms of their vegan beliefs. That was the main event advertised and was enough to get me so excited for a trip, but it was actually SO much more! Before we actually even met the pigs, we got a chance to meet and pet puppies, the barn kitten, horses, goats and a mule and I have to say, Robin the goat stole my heart... While we pet and played and fed, Maggie taught us about the work that they do at the sanctuary. They rescue all different kinds of animals from different situations. Sometimes owners can no longer take care of their animal, sometimes they rescue them from livestock auctions (like Tanto the mule), but all of the time this amazing place is just trying to make sure these animals have happy lives. She explained some sad truths behind how teacup pigs are bred (they are basically just fed so little that their growth is stunted) but she just made us fall more and more in love with all of the animals we were meeting. So many animals at the sanctuary were up for adoption so if your house has a spare room, I can totally vouch for Robin the goat. They also have dogs that are looking for homes if that is more your speed. If you are just visiting the area like us, I highly recommend going for a tour. They did a wonderful job with socializing her and starting her off on training. The facility itself is beautiful. It's very clean and well staffed.
