On a recent visit I tried their 8.00 daily special size Oxtails. Portion was just enough to wet your appetite and fill you. The oxtails were tender and savory. I saved this spot in my bookmarks and decided to treat myself the other day and I don't regret it! The lady that took my order was nice. In my opinion the prices are not bad at all compared to other Caribbean food spots. They give you a decent amount of meat and sides for the price you pay. I ordered a large combo plate of oxtail/ curry goat with rice and peas. I also got a beef patty with coco bread. Everything was delicious, good flavors, good seasoning, they don't over do it on the salt like other places (low sodium diet), and the side of cabbage and fried sweet plantains hit the spot too! Because Baltimore had a reputation of having great restaurants, I decided to try my luck on my favorite Jamaican dish OXTAILS. After reading the reviews for this place, I decided this would be it! Pros:Ox tail very tender, cabbage& and rice: Fresh, served hot, good presentation. Portions decent. Con: Taste- the flavors were missing. I tasted more of a tomatoes base. Without thyme?!?! It didn't hit the Jamaican flavors I'm used to. The cabbages a bit overcooked with little flavor. Dish over all 2/5. Beef patty: Excellent!! hot, light pastry, perfect! Great taste. 5/5. Con: None. The owner/chef I'm not sure was very pleasant and she was very aware of how to handle my food, very clean. (Sorry I'm a stickler for cleaniness and respecting what goes in my mouth). If I were to return this place, it would definitely be for the patties. Today may not have been the best day for them for this dish specifically. Holy Moly Batman! This place has given me life all up and through and around the corner. Not sure how I happened upon this spot, but upon first notice, I became happy. It reminds me of home. I would say it is fairly easy to spot from the road, as the awning is bright blue...get it, hummingbird.....he he he. There appears to be plenty of street parking. Inside isn't much to look at, one table and a counter to order food. There is a menu on the on a dry erase board. I think some of the items change depending on day. On this day, I tried the stew beef, and oxtail dinners. It has been so hard to find a Caribbean spot that makes good food in thee Baltimore, most places that I try totally miss the mark, as the food is under seasoned, and just.not.right. When I say that the cook stuck her entttiiirrreee foot up in the food, yes Gawd! Everything that I tried, I loved. The brown stew tasted perfect, with just the right amount of potato and pepper and the meat was uber tender. The rice and peas and cabbage were a nice side, I mean I can't say that I have ever had rice and peas. The oxtail, which I'm always leery of trying was divine, and again oh so tender. The dinners themselves were large, even the smaller of the two containers was enough for two. This will be my go to spot when I'm unable to get on home to get my families home made version. This is a late post but this was murder pre-pandemic. The restaurant is probably the best Jamaican food on this side, while I'm not rushing to buy from them every week it was decent...by Baltimore standards. The lady working inside was pleasant also. The place could use some sprucing up but the area is meh...just order, get your food and go...no long ting. Awesome Jamaican carry out. When I went there was one sweet lady taking orders and making the plates - but it all went smooth and quick with me and 3 other customers. The jerk shrimp had incredible seasoning with the right amount of spice. The curry chicken platter flavor was banging. The rice and peas and cabbage in both platters was great. OMG! Thee best oxtail I have ever had in my life. The meat falls off of the bone and so tender, a knife is unnecessary. You only need your fingers to suck all of the gravy goodness off of the bones. The gravy was lip smacking good and the rice and veggies. Everything is super fresh. The curry chicken is good as well. Some complain about the neighborhood, but it didn't bother me at all. The best Jamaican food over east. Most people think that all caribbean food is the same. Its not. Jamacian and Trinidad food are different, with the Jamacian being heavier with spices. Hummingbird has been a Belair road fixture for many years. The food is amazing. The woman who owns this place does an amazing job. The consistency of each dish is something that some places find hard to do. Everything is authentic from the cowfoot stew, kingfish, oxtails, and curry goat. The jherk chicken is off the hook. I hate when this place is not open because the either I am forced to not eat my beloved Caribbean food or go someplace else. And there may be tons of little spots but most don't compare. Hit and miss at times her patties are good but the food isn't consistent and that's the only problem. I had the red pea soup and realized that's why they constantly make chicken soup wasn't good and the ox tails which I love from here the last time I had it was just ok when usually it's really good. Still a good place just needs to be more. So today I got A goat roti!!!!! Wow!!!! Sooo good taste like a trini made the roti skin! It was sooo good and flavorful!! I always said that Jamaicans don't know how to make roti but this was out of this world and great!!!! She doesn't even need the cabbage and the plantain it was that good. Tasty food. I'm not a spicy food lover so I haven't purchased the jerk chicken for myself but have tried a piece of my husband's and it is good but too hot for my palate.
