Great food and service! I had heard a lot of good things about Hunan Garden and finally got around to trying it. We got the Beef Flat Rice Noodle, the Pork Chop Dry Pot, and the Mapo Tofu. My favorite was definitely the Pork Chop Dry Pot! The pork was tender, the dish was well seasoned, and it wasn't overly spicy even though it looks quite spicy. The noodles were solid, would definitely order again. The Mapo Tofu was a little lacking in flavor in my opinion, but still a decent dish. All dishes came out in fairly large portions! I really wish I lived closer so that I could come more often - finding good chinese food in ATL is a little tough, so I'm so glad to have tried Hunan Garden. Prices are also very reasonable! The service is good! Usually chinese restaurants don't have the greatest service, but they were good about refilling our waters and not rushing us once we were done with our food. Beef malatang- not the best out of the four dishes as it's too peppery for me, but one of the most flavorful and tender beef dish. Amazing! New favorite Taiwanese restaurant (they also have really good dry pot which I think is where the name comes from). Go for their family style dishes - the portions are large and authentic, and still reasonably priced. I felt so nostalgic seeing dishes that I haven't seen in a restaurant in Atlanta until now - clams with squash, pork knuckle with peanuts. Some favorites include the crab roe tofu, salt and pepper squid, pocket tofu, and intestine dry pot. The gua bao also is huge and delicious. The only things that were not amazing but still good were the beef noodle soup (soup a little bland) and the 3 cup chicken (too much sugar). I come about once a month because its one of the only places my parents ever want to eat at. Hunan Garden restaurant in Johns Creek is 50 miles away from where we are. But, it sure was worth the drive. A quaint corner with parking right up front got us in and seated at a convenient table for four of us. Great to be greeted with a friendly smile and "An" was very helpful. Lets start with 8 pieces of Pan Fried Pork dumpling and Hot Sour soup. The soup was freshly made and had all the ingredients we expected. We saw the " specials" written on the wall and ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork and the Noodles with Beef. Both of these "off the menu" specials were outstanding. We also ordered vegetable dishes that were vegan friendly such as Lotus Root and Eggplant with Tofu Hakka stir fry and a grand way of preparing Shredded spicy Cabbage the Taiwanese way. An additional specialty was one called the Lamb Dry Pot. The food that was served covered every inch of our table and we were very happy with the attentive care we received. It was an abundant amount of delicious Taiwanese style of cooking and we packed leftovers for another meal. Don't order Kung Pao Chicken. We did and we were totally disappointed. It didn't seem anything like the Kung Pao Chicken I've known. The chicken and the peanuts were all deep fried. There were hardly any vegetables and the sauce was thick and way too much, overpowering the flavor of the dish. Very disappointed with our experience today. The server who took our order was really nice and even told us there would be a bit of a delay on food because of how busy they were but I thought the food came out pretty quickly! I ordered the spicy pick two dry pot with beef and fish fillet. I have been looking forward to trying this place for a while but I was a little bit disappointed with the flavor. It was way too salty and not spicy enough, it was not spicy at all although i ordered the spicy level. The beef was also paper thin almost like tissue paper. I did enjoy the texture of the fish fillet and the veggies like lotus root and wood ear mushrooms. Since the place is quite small, you'll have to wait a little bit. The food breakdown we shared: * Wood ear mushrooms with ginger: Though simple, it's tasty. My friend who brought us here even made a comment. * Spicy beef tripe & tendon: There's definitely a slight kick to this. * Hakka stir fry eggplant: This was really good! There was a slight crunch on the skin with a soft interior. I must say it was a flavorful eggplant. * Taiwanese rice noodle pork: I'm not a fan of those clear noodles, which this dish turned out to be. But, it was rather good. The whole group seemed to have liked it as well. * Pick two dry pot: Fish and shrimp. Super flavorful and delicious! All the spices and flavors were infused in the fish and shrimp. Such a basic non offensive name for a Chinese restaurant but don't let that fool you. This place is amazing it was was worth a 30 minute drive for me. Go with a group so you can sample a lot of stuff. Here's my order of best to least favorite. -Pick two dry pot: Fish and shrimp. I loved the dried fish. It's flavorful without being too spicy. This was my favorite dish. -Pick two malatang: Fish and lamb. This is going to be saltier than the dry hot pot and may be difficult to eat without rice. It's amazing with rice. -Hakka stir fry eggplant: I like stir fried eggplant not covered in sweet sauce. This was just what I wanted. -Spicy beef tripe & tendon: Meat. Throw it on rice. It's tasty. -Taiwanese rice noodle pork: This noodle dish is similar to other Taiwanese rice noodles I've had at other restaurants. -Wood ear mushrooms with ginger: Do you like crunchy mushrooms? We ordered several dish items for our family of four and enjoyed ourselves to each entree and appetizer. The food quality here is high. My family and I were so excited to return for my brother's bday, but we were extremely disappointed. We came at a busier time (and had a reservation), but it was clear that the restaurant was panicked. The servers were running around, and the energy of the restaurant was just so chaotic. I hated how DIFFERENT the food tasted in comparison to our first visit. The food quality was terrible - almost every dish was over-salted. We couldn't finish anything unless we diluted it with significant amounts of rice. The dandan noodles were super watery. The beef steak special, the green beans, and the taiwanese three cup chicken were super salty. The salt and pepper squid was mostly cabbage and minimal squid. The beef dry pot was not tender. The only decent dishes were the beef fried rice and the walnut shrimp (maybe). The braised pork in plum sauce was okay, but not great. The worst part was the service. We had the same server as our first visit - I think she might be the owner. Last time, the server was so kind. I don't know what happened, but this time around, our server was extremely disrespectful. I cannot emphasize how rude she was. Our waters were never refilled, we were constantly ignored, etc. The server got angry with us multiple times for the craziest reasons. For example, I didn't notice this, but my bag fell off my chair. The server was aggressive with me, saying how that wasn't allowed and demanded I pick it up immediately (': I apologized and grabbed it bc I genuinely got scared of her I felt like a child in school. She also scolded and confronted my sister about her **1 yr old baby.** The baby was walking to LITERALLY THE NEXT SEAT, so she could sit with my dad. It was just uncalled for. Anyways, we spent 45 minutes there (with 30 of those minutes waiting for our dishes) before they began to rush us to leave. So, I panicked and started packing up our meals in to-go containers (they didn't bring us enough lol), and the server impatiently brought out our cake at the same time. There were still dirty dishes and unpacked food everywhere. We wouldn't have minded the dishes being everywhere, but it was the fact that the server was holding the lighter ON and inches away from my sister's shoulder, basically trying to force her to hurry up with opening the cake box. Meanwhile lol I was still packing the remainder of the dishes. As soon as my sister stuck the candles in, the server just lit the cake. Before we could even pass the cake to my brother, she just randomly started singing happy bday really fast. As a result lol the entire restaurant awkwardly sang happy birthday to my sister instead of my brother. We just passed the cake to my brother after other customers cheered but yeah lol the whole situation was bizarre. As soon as we finished the cake, we left. My family and I got so overwhelmed that we stepped outside as soon as we could. We just felt like an inconvenience even though I know we did nothing wrong. It was an awful experience. My favorite restaurant has now reached a new top level with our favorite cook, all star Chef Ko. My kids learned to eat veggies since they were 4 y/o, thanks to Chef Ko. To see him at Hunan Garden was a delight today. Not to mention, the service team is always superb. We just enjoyed a feast for dinner. My wife and kids just love this style of cooking. It's four of us but we often order 6 or more main entrees. We eat it all. Despite their generous portions, believe it or not, we don't have much of leftovers. I've been looking for good malatang in the area, and I just can't seem to find good ones! My friend recommended this place and we decided to check this out. This restaurant is tucked away in the suburbs of Johns Creek and it's in a rather less crowded strip mall so I was skeptical when my friend said that they had good malatang. We visited on a Friday evening around 5:30PM and the place was relatively empty, though it did get busier later on. We ordered the malatang, dan dan noodles and Mongolian beef. We were just going to have malatang but I remember having some of the best dan dan noodles at Din Tai Fung and was hoping the same, and we just wanted a meat dish so we got the mongolian beef. The staff here is all Chinese or Taiwanese but they are fluent in English so they will understand what you want. The downside of the malatang here is you can't pick and choose your toppings -- everything is already decided for you and that was a little disappointing to hear. Our food came out in about 10-15 minutes so it was rather quick -- the malatang had a nice visual. Regarding the taste -- it was actually pretty good! We asked for extra numbing flavor and the kitchen was able to deliver just that. We got the beef flavor and there were plenty of veggies & protein that matched the flavor. It was a bit salty though.. wasn't used to this much salt in a typical malatang. The dan dan noodles were OK -- I was obviously spoiled by Din Tai Fung's dan dan noodles and was expecting a peanut-based broth but it was just minced pork and a different sauce. It wasn't bad.. but not the greatest either. Mongolian Beef was solid -- can you say much about it? Sweet and savory; just how I like it. It paired perfectly with rice. Overall -- as a big fan of malatang, I enjoyed this place pretty well. I still haven't found the IT malatang place but this place will suffice until my journey continues. Great little spot with fast service! Opened 4-1-23. Everything tasted really good here! They have a lot of dry pot and malatang dishes which seems to be their specialty. The stuffed tofu with chicken was so good! The vegetables were fresh! The eggplant was stir fried with basil and it was so good too. The general tso chicken was also good! Not too breaded and fresh. Nothing was greasy or heavy. We will definitely be back for more dishes!
