Tried about ten different dishes. The lamb was my favorite by far but everything was good. The bill was surprisingly small.

We decided to try this place based on the high ratings, but unfortunately, our experience didn't quite live up to the expectations. We were a party of 5 and found both the food and the service to be inconsistent. The Food: Most dishes were mediocre or worse. The Three Cups Chicken (1/5) was the worst I've ever had. The Hong Kong Style Shrimp (1/5) was just bland, tasteless fried shrimp. The Lamb with Scallion (2/5) was far too salty. The only "average" dish was the Spicy Beef and Tendon (3/5), but one decent dish can't save a meal this poor. The Service & Billing: The service was quite slow during our visit. We waited a long time for the check and eventually ended up packing our own leftovers and heading to the front counter to pay so we could head out. I was also surprised to see an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill, especially since it was calculated on the total after tax ($23.07 tip on a $106.80 subtotal). While I understand automatic tips for groups, it felt a bit high due to poor services. There are a lot of great dining spots in the area, but based on this disappointing visit, I'm sure I would not return to this one. read more

2 words: Shanghai Noodles! I've gotten this twice and it's so so good. As another reviewer mentioned, it has a dusting of some sort of seasoning that's delicious. We came right when the restaurant opened at 11am and were the first customers, but sadly, the food was a big letdown. The Three Cup Chicken was overly sweet, starchy, and had a strange color--honestly, it tasted worse than what we cook at home. The Pork Chop was so dry that even the kids didn't want to eat it. The Braised Pork had barely any flavor, and the portion was tiny--definitely not enough to go with a full bowl of rice. The Beef Noodles were disappointing too--the beef wasn't tender at all. The only dish we actually liked was the Salt and Pepper Chicken, which was nicely seasoned and crispy. Portions across the board were small, and for the price, it just wasn't worth it. The food here is excellent and the people are very nice! We got calamari which was perfectly crispy and super flavorful. We got some wonton dish also as an appetizer that came with a delicious sauce that I put on everything throughout the meal. I had Singapore noodles for the first time as well and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did! And we also got sichuan lamb which was also super flavorful. Could've been spicier though in my opinion. Great place to come with lots of people! The server gave us scallion pancakes for free at the end which was really nice. Not the same food or experience I loved before - they definitely changed ownership. I came for lunch - they don't have lunch specials anymore. I could hear the hostess sneezing and coughing ... maybe subconsciously that affected my appetite. Very few customers. Ambience missing the upscale Taiwanese feel ... We also got the eggplant & kung pao chicken so we could have leftovers for later. Eggplant was pretty good - liked that there was some protein in there and tasty sauce. Kung pao was a bit greasy. Food was delicious and service was fast. Staff were incredibly kind and accommodating considering we brought our young child with us. Highly recommend if you're in the area. This is a hidden gem if you're looking for a family owned restaurant where the staff remembers your order and name when you visit. The food is always fresh and the staff is super friendly! My go to has been the fried rice which is authentic and not that bland rice with mixed frozen veggies that you usually find at many restaurants. My family also enjoyed the beef with mixed vegetables, shrimp dishes, and the egg rolls. The only dish I didn't love was the sesame chicken because the batter seemed too hard. The portions here are large that can fill a football player's appetite and will give a standard person two good meals. While the menu is pretty large the staff are more than willing to explain what the items are and even provide recommendations based on your preferences for spicy, sweet, or savory. They give you a cucumber salad to start off with and it was super delicious. I probably could have eaten several plates of it on my own. My friends and I ordered the Scallion Pancakes, Stir Fried String Beans with Pork, and Spicy Chicken Sichuan Style. The Scallion Pancakes were very thin, however, they were still good. I have also been trying to find a good string bean dish at different Asian restaurants in Atlanta and I think this restaurant has a really nice recipe for them! My issue is that the amount of amazing restaurants available can be overwhelming to choose from. So I'm always excited when someone else suggests a new restaurant to try. My good friend heard great things about La Mei Zi from her fellow work colleagues. It's located in the back of a shopping center that unfortunately is under major construction. That did not stop us, nor a crew of other people, from going. The service here is 10/10! They honestly all make you feel like family. It was so refreshing because you can tell that each person that came to our table was genuinely happy to be there and talk about the food. Now the food! Oh my gosh!!! Booooomb! Okay?? So the parking lot is honestly terrible. It is under construction and very congested and you will have a really tumultuous time trying to find parking with all the one ways. Is in a shopping plaza and where it is in a shopping plaza there is really no exit or entrance there because of the construction so you will have to navigate yourself accordingly. The space is a large dining room type area with a big table in the middle (with carryout things stocked on it). When I came in it was pretty crowded and I told the lady at the front that I wanted to see to dine in and she just pointed to the table she wanted me to go to. She didn't actually take me or lead me to the table. She pointed across the room, and I feel like that could have been treated a little bit better or a little bit differently. Along with that I had to wait just to get a menu. I don't even know if they knew I was there for a while, which was really annoying... Sitting with no menu or water or anything. Let me say that you get large portions here, so dont expect to come here and get a kids meal size helping. They feed you like an adult! General Tso - was super good. I have no complaints about this. It came out hot and cooked to perfection in the sauce was just as flavorful and spicy as it needed to be. Chicken dumpling - I have no issue, the dumplings were good. Soft and tender, they hit the spot. Veggie spring roll - spring rolls were good and came with a sauce that really set them off. I would definitely get these every time. Wonton in hot Sichuan sauce - No this I ordered randomly just because I happen to catch another table near me with it. It's a spicy dish, so if you don't want the spice you don't need this. But they had several of the dumplings in the spicy oil and it was really flavorful. It may have been more spice in heat than it was flavor, if that makes any sense, but is still was really good. I would 100% come back to this spot. Maybe I would evaluate when I go because the parking lot is a mess. Especially because they're doing construction right now on it. We ordered Pork Intestine, spicy mapo tofu w/pork, waitress suggested that the two dishes had same flavor, so we switched mayo tofu with pork in garlic sauce. The Pork Intestine was good, no surprise, it could be spicier; but pork in garlic sauce was surprisingly sweet and not spicy at all, its Chinese name is 角香肉絲, but it's nothing like it, a huge misleading statement. They had the option at least to order the classic mapo tofu without meat, and a moderate number of vegetarian choices. My tofu delivered a rich flavor and a bit of numbing sensation that suggests they used the real stuff in their spice mix. It was quite large and filling. My veggie dumplings contained corn, mushrooms, and a few other goodies and were likewise plentiful. Staff took amazingly good care of us, seating us immediately, and checking in on us frequently. One of my friends had the Sichuan Fish. Based on recommendations from the staff, I had the Three Cups Chicken. Absolutely delicious. I immediately knew I had to bring my wife to La Mei Zi for dinner. So that's what I did. Yesterday night I went back for dinner and completely blew my wife's socks off with the Three Cups Chicken--savory & sweet, with garlic, ginger, and basil. It's like chicken-candy. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. The environs are not overstated or garishly done. La Mei Zi is an excellent place to hang out and have a stellar meal of Taiwanese cuisine. You could eat here and order more of the known, "mundane" Chinese dishes. And you would have a good time. But it would be better if you allowed your tongue to do some exploration among some of the lesser-known specialities they serve. Then you'll have a great time.
