My wife & I frequent Hunan for lunch, but occasionally do dinner there as well. The food quality & recipes have been consistently very good to excellent, but they are largely Americanized versions of Chinese fare. The staff may be small, but they hustle their butts off and deliver a wonderful experience - hot food is hot, cold beverages are cold, etc... All of this in a casual, clean and otherwise well maintained environment. The only negative we have experienced is one time my spicy dinner was a bit over spiced with peppers... We were seated quickly in the bar area upon arrival. Ordered potstickers and spring rolls to start. Pot stickers were good and tasted fresh, spring rolls were room temperature and mediocre. Three of ordered different entrées and all enjoyed them. My Kung Pao Chicken was not spicy a d I wasn't asked how spicy I wanted it. I solved that desire with the chili oil after it arrived. When I was working in St. Joseph and had a Chinese food craving, this would be where I would go. Granted, there are not a lot of options up north. I'm going to be honest, their food is average. I like spicy food and they are good at that but it seems like they add nothing but hot peppers. I cannot taste any other seasonings. The chow mein is usually a disappointment whenever I order it. It's plenty spicy but also bland, if that makes sense. No salt, sweetness, or any other seasonings aside from hot. It's also very oily, like the noodles just sit in a pool of red oil. I've tried it a few times hoping it was just bad timing but that is how many of their dishes are. Also, since they have a monopoly up north in that city, their prices are on the higher end which are not on par with the lack of quality of the food. I really tried hard to give this place a chance. I give it one star because the customer service was pleasant and they were quick. Sadly I can tell while they're quick. I ordered the Mongolian beef and nothing about it was close to Mongolian beef. I've loved Hunan for over 30 years! Always the best food and great staff! They make you feel at home. Prices are very reasonable.

My folks love this spot. Maybe because they always get their usual and it's reliably good. Tonight, however, the shrimp tasted sour and I was unable to eat my meal. At least the kids' chicken fried rice was okay and I didn't starve. I wish the waitress had informed me of a lunch portion option. Service wasn't bad. Guy didn't really check on us but the food came out fast, actually a bit too fast as I had barely touched my soup. The hot & sour soup was too salty and tasted like straight soy sauce. I poured some of my water into it. Also, apparently they charge $0.75 for (burnt) fried noodles for the soup. My shrimp dish had 6 shrimps in it. This is just one of those basic Chinese American places with sysco stuff and too much corn starch making their sauces too thick. Quality and affordability is what Hunan restaurant is known for. Every time I have gone here, which is about once a week, we have been treated exceptionally well by everyone. With their prices, I thought their portions would be small, but I was wrong. Their lunchtime meals, which you can also order all day Monday through Thursday, are enough to fill anyone up. I have eaten in Chinese restaurants around the world and this restaurant has the distinction of being the worst. The positive review say stating this "is the best Chinese food I've ever had" were obviously made by a local (owner, maybe?) who has never gotten out of town. I ordered a beef satay appetizer that was so tough I had to cut it up with a knife and spoon into small pieces I could swallow whole. I ordered the pork moo shi and it was completely flavorless and lacking key ingredients. Oh yeah, they gave me a MEXICAN FOOD MENU WHEN I SAT DOWN. Everything is bland and I guess Americanized. There are for sure better options even in St. Joseph....I'd give it 2 stars. Now the four star is for their recently added Mexican menu...I know it sounds crazy, but it is much better Mexican than either Le Mesa or El Magay. I get it...it's not like those place set a bar too high, but it's about all we got here to compare. I had the choose three...fried taco, chili rellano and a tamale. Everything was excellent.
