Stopped in on a rainy Saturday at around 2 and the place was pretty poppin. This was my first experience at a Polish grocery store, so I didn't really know what to expect. They have everything here - produce, fresh kielbasa, household items, skincare, pastries, and hot foods just to name a few. The pastries are just kind of on a shelf out in the open, which didn't seem too sanitary (or the buffet for that matter) because the store is VERY tight and the aisles are narrow, so I could see it being easy to knock a hand into it, not to mention the conversations happening next to the cramped buffet station. We ended up ordering hot food from behind the counter since none of the buffet items appealed to us anyway. Nothing was labeled so you have to either know what you want, or guess what the food items are. Or if you want to roll the dice and just point, that works too. It seemed there was only one person behind the counter who spoke English but she was busy helping other customers. We ended up getting the stuffed cabbage. You can order the food by weight, or a dinner portion ($9) where you get an entree, potatoes (choose from 3 different styles) and a salad. We did the roasted potatoes and beet salad and both were great, especially the beet salad. The stuff cabbage was just okay. I thought stuffed cabbage was supposed to be mostly meat, but this one was mostly rice with a few specks of meat. We dug into some of it in the parking lot and it was already cold. I wouldn't order this again. Maybe we just didn't order the right thing. I do wish they had cooked kielbasa behind the hot food counter because I would have loved to try those. There's also a packaged cold food section (i.e. various salads, stews, and pierogies) you can bring home and heat up. I ended up getting a quart of half sour pickles to take home. I wouldn't mind giving this spot another try - possibly some of the kielbasa to throw on the grill at home. I don't know of many Polish grocery stores around, especially with such a variety, so I can see why it's so popular. read more

I'm not exactly Polish and do not speak the language, but I love this packed store, which I discovered after visiting its affiliate, the Pastrami Grill. On the right as you enter there is a section with all kinds of Polish dairy products, butter, farmer cheese, etc., herring and smoked fish. Continue and you come to a hot food bar, which is attended. So far we have tried the stuffed cabbage and the red cabbage, both very good. La Portena picked up a container of beef tripe soup. A bit salty, but very tender. Continue on, and you will come to a deli counter with many types of kielbasa, kabanosy, hams and all manner of Polish pork products. If you're like me, you'll want to find an English speaker, or you can just gesture. Prices are modest, quality is high. There's a large baked goods section as well. I'm always a little nervous about pastry items in these places, but the rye bread was excellent. The pastries look the part. Along the far wall, you'll find pierogies and the excellent pickles they also sell at the Pastrami Grill. As you wait to pay, you can peruse the selection of herbs, spices, and dried mushrooms. Unfortunately for me, the packaging is all in Polish. Check out is pretty efficient. Overall, I would say the store is friendlier than the Polish places I used to visit in Greenpoint, and it has become my favorite store of its type in the tri-state area. Recommended. read more

Well stocked, clean and busy deli that'll make you feel you're right smack in central Warsaw! Interesting European canned and bottled goods of all types, snacks, sundries, you name it! Visited the full-service hot food counter as well as the self-service buffet bar today to grab an assortment of delicious, authentic Polish / Eastern European favorites. Happy to report that everything was delicious. The stuffed cabbage (huge portions) was one of my favorites! The pirogies were packed with flavor and delicate - you can tell they're super fresh. Pork cutlet was also a nice sized portion. Noodles sautéed with bacon, mushrooms and kraut were excellent. Potato pancakes, interesting croquettes and fresh mashed potatoes rounded out my gastronomic trip overseas! Only ding is that the place is a bit overstocked which can make it a little chaotic in there - and they were out of some staple items like chicken soup and cooked kielbasa! Got lunch, barely, from kind ladies who spoke polish. Big table with amazing looking food. That said, don't look for a lot of veggies or healthy dishes, think meat and potatoes. Got stuffed cabbage, potatoes with gravy and cucumber salad. Could not eat more than 1/2, and I though I was hungry. Huge servings at decent prices of deliciousness. Bratek Deli was ok place to grab fast food fresh made home style, some of the cold cuts sausages/kielbasa reminded old days at home. Homemade salads, hearings, pierogis, beef tatar that's always beautifully read even after few days loaded with God knows what funky taste. Bread, doughnuts, all displayed in open, next to cleaning products, place is loaded with all kinds of products hard to move around without touching some of the displayed food. There are many youngsters serving people hygiene while handling food has a lot to desire, hand washing doesn't exist, selling original packaging heavy plastic on head cheese it's normal, food handler picking nose will cut your cold cuts with out washing hands no one uses gloves no hair netting. Shame on the owner this place becomes disgusting specially after Ukrainians refugees or deserters start working there. Food is expired and most likely recycled into some other meal the next day. I got sick multiple times after eating there but I didn't connect the dots initially so I kept shopping there. After most recent incident I will never buy anything there again. Many times I also saw mold on their bread. Prepped meals have a ton of salt. Go to Krakus that's a minute further. read more

You have to appreciate bratek for what it is - basically a Polish shoprite stuffed into a 1,000 sq ft space. First off - the parking is absolutely atrocious. These people will murder for a spot. Beware. Next, it's kind of difficult to social distance here but I made do. The aisles are absolutely tiny but FILLED with Polish goodies. Anything from, chocolates to jams to mustards to Polish ketchup, yogurt, anchovies. You name it, they have it. Then they have a whole deli section but I didn't dare go there because you really have to speak Polish to get by here. They also have a little bakery. A small section of prepared and packaged foods can also be found here. I got the chicken gyro salad and it was the best thing I bought. Delicious. This is also where you'll find the perogies and packages sauerkraut and really a ton of other goodies. The holy grail is there hot food bar. The only problem is trying to communicate with the ladies behind it. They get the point after a while but it's definitely hard to communicate. I got the chicken which was just ok but a friend that frequents here told me they have different things every day. I'll definitely try it out again on a different day, I'm told they have flounder, salmon and a ton of other options of different days. Worth the trip. Definitely be prepared for the language barrier. I read a few reviews about them being rude and not wanting to speak anything but Polish but the ladies who helped us were very nice and helpful one couldn't speak English so her coworker instantly jumped in and explained things to us and gave us recommendations!!! The bread was excellent. The cold cuts are good. The premade food, not so much. I'm very familiar with Polish soups. Their red beet soup is the grossest soup I've ever had. Once I got home, there was an 1/8" layer of oil on top. It was greasy and has a strange meat like flavor. Had to chuck it, inedible. Potatoes also get an odd taste once they have been refrigerated, so the ones that came with our meal didn't seem to have been mashed that same day. I'd come for cold cuts, store items, and bread. Adding to the prior review, I've now gotten sick from food purchased at Bratek! There was either a chemical detergent solution or glass cleaner taste in what I ate, resulting in severe stomach pain and cramping. This, on top of the hateful, racist attitude by management and many of the employees, who show a blatant disdain for persons who are not Polish, or their version of Polish. In the past, I've literally been cursed at while standing in the food line. But now, the issue with getting sick from what I ate is the last straw. Looking for some delicious and cheap polish food? Look no further! This place is legit!! They have a couple isles of groceries and then in the back they have a huge counter area with tons of hot food options, tons of different meats and kielbasa's and a little bakery area. You can get a full meal which is an entree plus a side and a salad for $6 and they give you so much food you could get 2 meals out of it!! I love the potato pancakes, the fried fish, the pork cutlets and the pirogies. I find myself stopping in here more and cooking less! The store was stocked very well with Polish provisions and the aisles are narrow. If you know what you're looking for, you'll have a field day there. I was there for the hot food. The customers were of all variety - and the 4 at the hot food with me didn't speak Polish. That lack of communication makes the ordering somewhat difficult - You can point at what you want, which I did and also said the names of the 3 items I wanted - and she seemed perplexed that I didn't want salad with stuffed cabbage (galumpki) and mashed potatoes. No, I wanted a hot vegetable, and I was fine with sauerkraut or sautéed cabbage. A customer before me asked what soups they had today, and at some point the soups appeared on a teleprompter. I don't know if they'd been up there all the time or if she pressed a button and pointed his face in that direction, but there was a lot of variety. Went to pay, and the cashier didn't speak one word to me. I put the container on the counter and she stared at me. I figured I'd better utter the word "DINNER" so I did, and she took my $20 and returned $12. The meal was $8.00 and if you are not inclined to cook for yourself you'd likely enjoy the hot food, and for $8 you get your money's worth. I don't know if your choices are limited to 3 per meal, they just might be, rather than having a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but then again, if you speak Polish, you have an advantage here. On the other hand, I do make stuffed cabbage at home - it is just a 3 hour ordeal - and sometimes I want what I want and don't want to cook. So there is that. The stuffed cabbage was good, not great, the mashed potatoes were flavorful but dense, and the sautéed cabbage while it was sitting in a hot bath was cold. Would I go back again? My wife and I love the food offered at Bratek. We also appreciate most of their staff members... Sadly, since COVID 19, some of the Bratek's employees do not consistently space customers and wear masks (some cover their mouth only leaving the nose out). They let customers touch the breads and leave tasting meats out for all to touch and put their hands on. We own a service business and would never open up unless we could protect our customers. We hope the owner reads this and does something to make us feel safe and if that happens I will definitely change this review. read more

I was there on thursday dec 21, 2023 ... this used to be my favorite store to buy polish food from... I live in Pennsylvania so I only go there around holidays mostly... this time around it wasn't that great... food was not what it used to be... vegetable salad was old and I had to throw it out... stuffed cabbage used to be great but that's no longer the case... but the worst thing about this visit was the guy working the meat station... I was at the meat station being serviced by a very nice woman... she handed me my first 2 items and I was holding it while I was telling her what I'd like next-- when out of nowhere this skinny guy in his 50's behind the counter said to me "tak tak, trzymaj blisko przy cyckach to będzie ciepłe " ( yes, yes, hold it close to your tits so it stays warm) I was at a loss for words... needless to say I will never go into that store again.... read more

I have bought meals from their hot foods section many times before, and lately the quality of this food has gone down significantly. The last two dishes that I bought here (pork tenderloin and goulash) were very bad. The goulash was spoiled and the pork tenderloin meat tasted bitter/spoiled as well. I've eaten a good pork tenderloin many times, and this meat was 100% subpar. Also, the stuffed cabbage that I bought was mostly filled with rice and not as good as stuffed cabbage that I have had at other places. Decided to pop into this place since I recently moved to the area and am always interested in international markets and was very pleased with the wide selection of tinned fish they had. That for me was a big win since I'm sort of a tinned fish connoisseur. They also had a wide range Kefir and yogurts which was another major plus as well as healthy 100% juices for a reasonable price. I haven't gotten anything from the deli as of yet, but on my next trip I will. It is a little crammed and not knowing Polish may leave you thinking the staff is rude (after reading other reviews), but I don't usually have many questions as a grocery shopper or lose patience over language barriers. read more

I am not polish but I married one. I love polish food and this place rocks. Very reasonably priced. Super clean and the food is really good and fresh. I usually go here a few times a money. The Peking situation is absolutely horrible, but once you find a spot you are good to go. They have a salad bar kinda set up with fresh polish food (stuffed cabbage, pirogies, salads etc...) they have a deli area and even a hot area with fresh made hot dinners! $5 can usually get you a complete Mean (meat, and two sides) you really can't beat that. My co-workers raved about Bratek Deli, so I stopped by to pick up lunch one day. Their cafeteria set up in the back is cheap as hell and they give a lot of food. I got a quarter rotisserie chicken, a significant amount of mashed potatoes, and over half a dozen pierogies for $6. The chicken was a bit overcooked, but it still tasted good. The mashed potatoes were definitely made from scratch, as they weren't completely smooth. The pierogies were stuffed with cheese and potato, and definitely one of the better pierogies I've had. Come here for your Polish needs - prepared foods, cakes and breads, sausages and meats, candies, and every other item you may need for your kitchen and dinner table. We will come here regularly now ! My boyfriend is Polish and he had been speaking of Polish food for a while, I myself am not very familiar but love trying new foods. We finally made a trip there from CT and picked up a bit of everything. I am now a major Polish food fan and can't wait to go again! From freshly cooked pierogi (both savory and sweet), fresh baked breads/amazing cakes/cookies, sausages and meats of numerous kinds, prepared salads and various pantry items like pickles, candies, jams, spreads, etc, this is your one stop shop. I'm very fortunate that I went with a local who introduced me to all the national foods and what to buy and try. I would have been overwhelmed by the variety and choices otherwise, because there is so much in this store. The store itself is quite decent sized as it is, with a full deli, bakery and prepared food section in the far back. Additionally, every aisle and shelf in the store is stacked with items, you would need a really long visit or multiple visits to check it all out. This place is wonderful. Next time you catch somebody saying "Eh Polish food is boring" drag them by the ear to Bratek Deli and show them the bountiful dumplings, pirogues, dried meats and cakes. Yeah okay, its in the middle of nowhere Jersey (I'm a New Yorker, deal), and this place is really a grocery store so everything is takeout, but boy if you're ever out there is this place worth the trip. Their hot bar is excellent, their variety of meat is outstanding (DUCK COLD CUTS hell yes), their prices are insane in the best possible way AND the best part is they usually let you try everything before you buy it. They've even offered pieces of their desserts for me to try before buying A+++++ best experience of my life. I remember when shit like this used to exist in north-eastern Brooklyn and I miss it. There's a difference between this place and Adam's in Wallington. Bratek is more of a Polish market and you can get various Polish foods whereas Adam's is more of a butcher shop. Like I said before, I have Polish descent in me and this place is pretty good and Garfield ALWAYS has the best stores and places to eat. Yesterday, I bought a roughly $8.00 meal. I handed the cashier a $100 bill. She preceded to give me change as if I gave her $10. I asked her to provide me the rest of the change and she refused to do so. In this establishment, there are cameras everywhere. Therefore, I asked them to check the cameras. After much quarrel, she finally went to go talk to another employee and they both went somewhere. They were gone for over 10-20 minutes. They then came back with a phone capture of a video screen in which there was an incredibly pixelated, zoomed-in hand handing over a $10 bill with no time stamp. There was no detail provided to show that that was my hand; it was an incredibly blurry image. To further strengthen my argument, I paid from cash from my wallet. The bill that was shown in the picture was incredibly crinkled as if coming from someone's pocket. It is physically impossible for a bill to be that crinkled when coming from a wallet. Next, I realized that I had two $100 bills remaining in my wallet. I received all three at the same time. The two that remained in my wallet were sequential in their serial numbers. Therefore, I asked them to read the serial number of the $100 bill that was in the register. They refused to do so. I asked them to show me the bill. They refused to do that as well. Realizing that the conversation was going no where, I stormed out of the store and vowed to never come back. I have been a customer for years; I have gone almost every day. I am almost embarrassed for this establishment to think that they could get away with stealing from customers. My daughter has worked in retail and this establishment has already broken many rules. Firstly, you never put large bills in the register until the change is handed to the customer. Secondly, the manager is supposed to come and count the cash register. An establishment is supposed to know at all times how much cash is in its registers. This would have easily handled the situation as well as prove that I was right. The suspicious time that they were gone, the pixelated image of only a hand with a $10 bill with no timestamp, and the refusal to read the serial number of the $100 bill they had in the register only reinforces the proof that they stole from me. I have a receipt from the transaction that has a timestamp on it. I would like to be contacted to reach an ultimate resolution to this disgusting treatment. read more

The store on the beginning looks very nice, however when you purchase "deli - diner" ready food stuff never purchase just meat because they'll charge you more than full dinnerware set (and nobody will inform you about it ) and if you use credit card as a payment they will extra charge you! We went here for the kielbasa and pierogies. The kielbasa rings are pretty cheap . Big variety and different prices. They have hot food tables also but didn't try it . I've heard all the food is great though and very cheap as well . The pierogies are tasty as well. Came here since I was craving Polish food (and I'm Filipino!) I knew right away from the pictures that this is where my friend's mom used to get dinners here. You walk straight towards the back and all the hot food to-go is there. I brought home breaded chicken, with a side of the mash potatoes and red beet salad. I also ordered the stuffed cabbage and asked for the "red sauce" on the side. If I remember correctly, my friend's mom used to make this salad with cucumbers and sour cream. I saw a small container with the similar ingredients, it tastes just as good. They seran wrap the to-go containers to prevent it from spilling, but darn, I wanted to take a bite of my food while I was stuck on rt 3 traffic. I'm convinced this place has an army of polish grandmas working in the back making pierogies from scratch. Whatever they are doing it's working. For $6 they give you a portion to feed your whole family. Everybody is really nice even if you don't speak Polish they are very patient with you.
