I like this location for the big windows and the coffee itself and that is mostly it. The staff seems to always be either indifferent or a little bit annoyed by my presence when ordering, so I don't necessarily feel a welcoming environment here, but the coffee is good enough, and so many coffee shops these days are packed to the brim, so I take what I can get. The Flatbush Avenue place is friendly enough and the coffee is fine. However, unlike the other hungry ghosts, this place is VERY LIMITED on its food. The one on fifth Avenue near 4th street is by far my favorite one. Never an issue about seating and always well stocked with a full variety of pastries and other stuff. The one in Garfield place is also quite good, but it is extremely busy nearly all the time. Once the weather warms up, I will happily walk down to the fifth Avenue location instead of the Flatbush one. read more

I went to Hungry Ghost with a friend as a starting point for a walk. Full disclaimer, I don't drink coffee, but as someone who feels hopelessly in the minority of adults I am occasionally open to a coffee shop meet where I know the only viable option for me will likely be hot cocoa. Well, I ordered one and honestly, it tasted kind of like any coffee shop hot cocoa I've had, kind of bitter (like dark chocolatey? I don't like dark chocolate at all) and not smooth enough. Like the problem could be too little cocoa or too little sugar. Either way, for me it was nothing special, but if you're a coffee lover, obvious your mileage has a lot more potential for variation. I stumbled across the Hungry Ghost while I was on my way to having a nice brunch a few doors down. This up and coming area of Park Slope / Flatbush (I say that as Doughnut Plant gets ready to open up next door, and Shake Shack just opened up down the road) just keeps getting better and better. As you walk into the Hungry Ghost, the first thing you'll notice is the relaxed atmosphere that just seems to come together in a very Brooklyn way. The staff were super friendly, and they've got a full pastry case with sweets including doughnuts from Dough, which also has its own shop just down the street. I asked about their Mocha (uses a chocolate syrup per the barista) and their Chai (which is a Chai concentrate per the barista). Not expecting anything spectacular, I asked which one they preferred, and we ended up flipping a coin lol. I ended up ordering my usual, which is the Chai with Soy and a shot of espresso (Dirty Chai), and it was just perfect to the last drop. I came back after brunch after those sweets in the case were just tantalizing and taunting me. They make most of their sweets in house, and the chocolate chip cookie is just to die for. You can be assured whenever I'm in Flatbush I will be making this a regular stop. They also have a menu full of light bites like sandwiches and such that are also made in-house that I didn't have an opportunity to try. Hopefully I will soon. read more

The cafe also serves up a variety of baked goods and light sandwiches during the day, though when I arrived on a Sunday afternoon, they were all out of hot croissants/sandwiches. There are two amazingly comfortable seats by the window; gorgeous in the late-afternoon sunlight, they seem as though they'd be ideal for an intimate conversation or for a lazy afternoon of reading and caffeinated beverages. Unfortunately, there are only two of them. If you are lucky enough to happen by when they are vacant, or ruthless enough to elbow a middle-aged woman in the throat when she makes a move toward the seat you were clearly waiting for, you MIGHT be able to sit down. But even then, there's a 37% chance that there will be screaming children running around the otherwise pristine coffeeshop. The 6 or 7 staff members do not concern themselves with such matters, nor do they care if you're standing there waiting to order...at least not enough to tell you to go order at the next gap in the display case. Overall, I really do like the Hungry Ghost. It's open and airy, they have a nice selection of teas, and their pumpkin cookies aren't half bad. However, for all the spaciousness, there always seems to be a dearth of good seating (and service), and the disparity between the two window seats and the rest of the shop is shocking. Theres two sunshinning tables on each side, but a clear sign that says "no laptop usage" Then there's a long table, that also says "no laptop usage" Here's the thing about us millennials, we don't give up. I ordered my tomato mozzarella pesto sandwich, and grabbed a sunshinning seat and landed my laptop onto my lap. Us millennials are also innovative. Sandwich was delicious!! I have been going to Hungry Ghost since it opened 4-5 years ago-I work in the area so I'm usually in and out, although sometimes I will sit at the main table and chat with a colleague. I'm glad the Ghost has the wifi policy that they have, cause if they didn't, I would probably never get a seat due to all the people with their laptops that think a local coffee shop is their office. There are a lot of reviewers here, that seem to be complaining about the staff and their wifi policy. This is a coffee shop. With good coffee, and seats, to socialize. It's not your office that you don't pay rent -I'm glad the manager has the backbone to enforce the shop's policy. Go to Starbucks if you want to sit all day in a coffee shop. And on that note, the staff is really friendly, not nasty. To recap, really good (Stumptown) coffee, pleasant staff, cute shop, good environment. Quit the hating-get a data plan. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops that's walking distance from where I live. I believe Hungry Ghost started in Fort Greene, but is now with multiple locations throughout Brooklyn. There are three Hungry Ghost locations somewhat close to me, but this is my favorite. First of all this place has wifi, which the ones on Sterling and Fulton do not. Secondly, it's more conducive to working as It's also one of the larger ones. There's a large 'bar' area along the wall in case you want to work on your laptop. Coat hooks under the counter are convenient as well during winter time. There are tables closer to the entrance if you want to read or have conversation, but these are specifically 'no laptop' zones. As with all the Hungry Ghosts, they make a great cup of coffee. They brew Stumptown here, and all the baristas are great and super friendly. Never been disappointed with a drink. Flat white has been consistent regardless of who's working. In my opinion, the baristas here make better espresso based drinks compared to Gorilla across the street. They also serve Dough donuts, although you pay about a 25c-50c premium compared to buying them from Dough itself. They accept CC from Square with no minimum, which is convenient on those days I'm not carrying cash. Great neighborhood coffee shop that's become a regular hangout for me. read more

Nice, big open space on Flatbush. We came after dinner nearby and just wanted to relax for a bit. If you're lucky, you can grab the two sofa looking seats near the door. There is no laptop allowed there, just enough space for two people to sit, sip coffee, and enjoy life. Their coffee is tasty and baked goods are yummy. Big selection of cold brew, kombucha, cold brew nitro, and the usual espresso selections. WiFi is free, staff is friendly and laid back. I usually go for the cheapest coffee, from a bagel cart or deli - partially due to convenience and partially because it annoys me to pay so much extra for haut café. But a few times I have ended up in Hungry Ghost, because I'm running late or forgot to get coffee closer to home, and each time I am surprised anew: Oh! This stuff really is better! Yes, it costs almost exactly twice as much as coffee from the bagel cart. But it's coffee that's actually worth drinking and experiencing. I would downgrade them for the price, but the truth is they are charging a fair price for a superior product. If I compare their pricing to their true peers, they suddenly look very reasonable - maybe even a bargain. So I won't complain that the Lexus costs more than the Hyundai. I was looking for a coffee shop near Target to hang out in before picking up some items, and this place looked promising. However, I frequently get my hopes up too high and am let down. The Hungry Ghost was the exception to this trend! As soon as I saw the facade of the building, I knew it would deliver. It looked so sharp and clean. Sure enough, the inside was equally aesthetically pleasing. It had the typical coffee-shop-hipster thing going on, but without the dirtiness. The other great part was the vegan baked goods. I had already eaten lunch a few hours earlier, so I ordered a soy latte and a vegan cranberry scone. It was delicious! It was a genuine scone, not a sugar-bomb monstrosity like some places sell. Stopped by here on a casual day after shopping at Target and other shops near by Barclays Center. We were attracted by their name and were eager to find out how hungry the ghost would be like. We explored their menu and finally ordered a turkey panini (sandwich), a green salad, one hot latte and one cappuccino. Appropriate portion of food for two girls who don't eat a lot. I love their coffee art! Their turkey sandwiches are rich with addition of cheese but tasty. I like their open space which reminds me of local Starbucks, where you order a drink and sit down for reading, talking or casual hang out. I stopped in here today when my roommate wanted a quick coffee. I decided to finally get a cup of their Kombucha on tap. I got the 16oz which was $3.75.
