I love this place. My dog and and I often end our runs here, where we can pick up a good cappuccino and a bagel. The staff is always friendly, and the food and coffee is always good. Today, I told them that I wanted the most exciting bagel they had (i.e: anything but plain). Ended up getting an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, delivered in this paper bag! I don't like any place so crowded you can't even stand and enjoy your coffee. HG loses my business for this reason. Sorry HG, I went to Starbucks and didn't even try your coffee or treats because you had 50ppl in there on laptops and there was no room for anyone new. I came here looking to see if there were any reviews about the "d-bag with the long hair," sure enough there are and I'm dying laughing. Sure, he sucks but I work in customer service/ coffee shops, so I get it. A lot of people in that neighborhood expect their bums to be kissed. I don't know why this place has one dollar sign rating when I just paid 4 dollars for a Small iced coffee that tastes horrible. I would at lease expect them to have almond milk as an option for this amount but only alternative to dairy they have is soy which I'm allergic to. We got hot chocolates from here after a particularly wet, cold, and windy day. It hit the spot-I recommend getting the hot chocolate with the oat milk if you can't have dairy. Pretty art and really, really delicious!! Small space with limited standing and sitting room, so hit up another hungry ghost if you're set on this chain but need more space. read more

This has become a regular spot of mine. The atmosphere is cozy and warm. The staff is friendly and they are always playing amazing jams. Their coffee is strong and they offer a nice selection of donuts from beloved Brooklyn bakery Dough (along with a host of other baked goods including Belgian waffles, coffee cakes and scones from Ovenly.) This is not a review of the coffee, which happens to be of a very decent standard, as one would expect from the Hungry Ghost chain. If you are interested in my thoughts on their coffee, please see my review of the Flatbush outpost. No, dear Yelpers, this is a review of the man who, without fail, greets patrons with a level of disdain and condescension heretofore unseen. While I do not expect my coffee to be served with something akin to a scene from Mary Poppins with "a barista is as lucky as lucky can be" thrown in for good measure, I would prefer not having to leave feeling as though I am unworthy of a coffee purchase. Saying "Thank you" with an impressively sarcastic snarl is not going to win you the ostensibly obligatory $1 tip. While I am certain that the employees at this store are hard at work at their local improv theater during their evenings, perhaps the management would benefit from providing these talented thespians with a script in which manners and common human decency are emphasized. We all know that you do not want to be waiting on us, the dregs of society who march towards "The Man" every morning to become yet another cog in the machine that is corporate America. We get it. But here's a wonderful acting exercise: PRETEND! MAKE BELIEVE! CONCEAL YOUR OUTRIGHT CONDESCENSION! Because, believe it or not, even us simple fools can see that your attitude is abysmal. For coffee is not difficult to come by in this part of the world -- a far superior Hungry Ghost is down the road; there is a Gorilla nearby; Milk Bar serves consistently good coffee, to name but a few superior outlets of coffee in the neighborhood. With that in mind, the only reason to frequent this place is the semi-convenient location though, at this point, the customer service at Starbucks is preferable. As much as I hate to admit it, I would rather support Starbucks than some of these high-and-mighty individuals at Hungry Ghost. Conclusion: This is Brooklyn and so good coffee is not a rare commodity. This is not some grungy bar in Bushwick where, at 1 a.m., you can treat the patrons however you please, as nobody is sober enough to care. There are also places in the city where you are shouted at because the staff are overworked and processing a million bagel orders, for example. However, there is a difference between brusque service and being an outright asshole. The baristas in question fall squarely in the latter category. First thing in the morning, I do want my coffee served with a smile or, at the very least, without being glared at to the point that, upon leaving, I recall the instances when I was bullied as a 6 year old. The staff are not universally bad at this location and there is just one guy and one woman who really ruin it for everyone else. That said, they have made frequenting this establishment almost unbearable. read more

Hungry Ghost manages to destroy the deliciousness of Stumptown with a weird watery-but-strong cold brew. I also don't understand how it's $4 for a small cup. I've also had the drip which is bitter and burnt tasting. On both visits two different employees have been so inattentive and lackadaisical it's almost comic. One would think that the trope of wanna-be hipster baristas had run its natural course. Not here. No eye contact, no "Hello", no "Thank you" after leaving $1 in the tip jar. Nothing. Not bad for a local coffeeshop but not the best either. Stopped by here because I was craving an drink and some caffeine with my boyfriend. Upon entering, this is a pretty small spot. I know they have another location a bit further down flatbush but this location had around 3-4 tables with some window seats. I got a hot gunpowder green tea and my bf got an iced latte. The iced latte was really smooth -- they serve stumptown. I did think thay the cupsize was smaller than usual though (12 oz) and so I thought it was a bit pricey for the size. I was choosing between jasmine green tea and gunpowder and asked for the baristas opinion. I normally opt for jasmine, but I felt like experimenting and the barista urged me to get gunpowder. In the end, I heavily regretted my decision. The tea was so so so so SO bitter. I drink my tea without any milk/sugar so I'm used to bitter tea but this was beyond that level so beware!! Pretty nasty people working in here. My order was miscommunicated and instead of taking the philosophy of pleasing the customer I was corrected and told what I had ordered. Once we clarified my order and it was it was established that I was owed money, the cashier walked away knowing full well he owed me money. I feel bad I really think he should be seeing someone, he should never be allowed to interact with customers and it's a shame all the other employees have to work with him. I've seen him talk down to customers/ mock customers/ mock employees/ belittle employees for things that were misplaced. He's just an all around awful person to be around if it effects me for 1 minute while I'm in the store I can't even imagine how it effects his co-workers. The staff (2 of them, a woman and a man) there on weekday mornings are rude and incredibly abrasive for that early in the morning. I used to go a couple times a week in the mornings but eventually gave up because I don't want to start my mornings off that way. Friends of mine have said the exact same thing, and also stopped going. I thought initially they were just having a bad day but time and time again its the same old nasty attitudes. Hi, I've had nothing but pleasant interactions and wonderful service with these folks, been coming here almost a year, but I'm here as my way of saying something that needs to be said and really just about the website Yelp in general: When you spell out elaborate and offensive descriptions of baristas or what have you that you took issue with using an anonymous username on here, it is cowardly and not directly addressing the problem like talking to a manager. Your words here can drastically affect these people's lives and it shows a great lack of empathy to come on here and single people out with no respect to if they had had a bad day, had their higher up been coming down on them, or the largest culprit I've seen is busyness that can often create problems in communication. If the service you had was rude, then perhaps that does need to be mentioned, but leave it at that. "Service was not friendly" it's the kind of note that the higher ups can pass to all their employees to improve upon. But if you're taking someone specifically apart on here in public choosing to embarrass them, you are not showing empathy and not caring whether this will affect them financially and it says more about you being a disgusting coward of a person. I'm giving this place 5 stars to counteract the review below calling one of the cashiers racist. As someone who has been a barista and has been called racist *simply for not smiling at someone,* I find it FAR more likely that they just made an honest mistake and wrote down some other customer's name on the reviewer's cup. Anyway, I can see how some people might consider the dudes who work here on weekday mornings to be surly and abrasive, but I think they're great. They sometimes say weird things, they make funny conversation, and they have, on more than one occasion, brightened my day on the way to the subway. I also think the coffee is great. I really don't understand the bad reviews on here. I have been coming to Hungry Ghost since it was Prospect Perk (over 5 years). The entire staff is super nice (especially David, alluded to as "greasy d-bag" in other reviews). If you are nice to people, they will be nice to you. End of story. Besides the great coffee and cool staff, I love hungry ghost because they are a great part of our community. The staff looks out for some of the sick and elderly people that live on the block, making sure they are staying healthy and keeping them company on holidays. They make jokes with my kids. They hand out Halloween candy. This is the kind of business we should support in our community. Great job guys and gals!! read more

Holy cow the staff are rude and annoying. How about just being nice/helpful? This is not the kind of interaction I want in the morning so I actually prefer to wait to buy more expensive coffee in the city after my commute rather than stop here on my way to work before I get on the train. On the weekends I still come here time to time. The coffee is good and that's what makes a visit worth it.. Pastries are mediocre.
