So I rolled past this place later one night and decided to stop in for a pint. It's near my house and I'd told myself i'd go in eventually so I found myself thirsty and locked my bike up out front. I walked into a sorta busy space with some folks at the bar and around the corner and it felt like a neighborhood dive and that's alright. I walked around to the back side of the bar, so I could see the door, and stood there trying to make eye contact with one of the two people behind the bar. I tried this for several minutes. I tried and failed. They spoke with friends, and counted money, but the sole person standing at the other end of the bar was invisible (no, it's okay, I get that from time to time). I know they saw me, they just didn't make eye contact. It was strange. Bring thirsty and hangry I got up and left, but only after playing a round of pinball (hoping that maybe my extended presence would warrant a check-in from the supposed bartender). There are so many places in this town that I'm happy to just get up and walk out if I don't get service (and I'm not flagging people down). You should too. Avoid this one. read more

We love hungry tiger!! but gee, the last time my coworkers and I ventured in there we had a negative experience that honestly, almost triumphs any of the great experiences we have previously had. Our group, around 5 people strolled in a couple weeks back on a decently slow tuesday night. The bartender was extremely rude with every one of us. We are all bartenders, we understand the way things operate but how we were treated was completely out of line. The bartender was aggresive, aggravated and seemed like she did not want to serve us in the slightest. This was completely apparent when one of my group members walked up to apologize for one of our people having to go back outside to grab their ID, the bartender told her to walk the hell away from the bar. She was so confrontational. We all have hard days, but when your in the service industry you need to take a step back and reevaluate how you treat people, because our service was poor at best. I heard great things about their vegan mac and cheese and had to try it for myself. Aaaaaand it was life-changing. It tasted like regular but even better, richer, and more creamy. You can add things to it and I chose caramelized onions, tomatoes & basil, and bacon. I get the vegan one for the vegan cheese, best believe I'm a full throttle carnivore. If dairy is an issue and you miss your beloved mac and cheese, then Hungry Tiger is where it's at. We love Hungry Tiger! My girlfriend and I had our first date here and the vegan cheese sauce is to die for. We stopped coming because there are so many off leash dogs on the patio. I work with dogs, and I like to take my dogs to the bar like everyone else in Portland. Unfortunately, my dogs don't like pushy large dogs all over them and their owners don't care when I try to explain that my dogs would prefer not to be bothered. Last time I went the off leash dogs were trying to eat food off of my plate and cornered my dogs so frequently that we chose to leave and not come back. This spot is right across from my apartment and I am so happy for that. The food is amazing. I've gotten the nachos several times and then realized they're completely vegan. My husband and I came here for dinner on a Friday night for the first time, and expected a super cool vegan bar with cool people and pinball machines. Very wrong. Unless you look the part of the hard rocker, the staff is going to treat you like an outsider. We kept to ourselves in a back table, yet somehow the server got a hair stuck up somewhere about us, and treated us like dirt. Never said hello, and when she brought our food and one plate was wrong, we told her and she disappeared for 20 minutes before coming back and slamming the replacement onto the table and leaving without a word. It's too bad by that point we were finished with our meal. When we went to the bar we asked her to close out our tab, and she rudely said she was doing dishes and we had to wait, and when my husband turned back to me she rolled her eyes and started mad dogging us as she stacked baskets. The food was okay for the price and for being dive bar food, but certainly not good enough to have that kind of attitude to a customer. Cool little hipster place with lots of food and drink options to choose from. The food was awesome but I took away one star for the poor service. The staff seemed like they thought they were too cool to act nice. No one ever smiled or made small talk or anything. But I get a very bad vibe from one of the bar tenders, I'm not sure of his name but I'm sure if you go you'll run into him, I've gone in a few times and the 2 times I've seen him there he was nothing but rude to me and very snarky with any question I asked(example: "do I order at the bar or at my table?" "What do you think the bar is here for?" "Oh I haven't been here since you reopened the inside so I wasn't sure sorry" "it hasn't changed since before we closed" "well I didn't come here before you closed for covid." "Ok so are you going to order or not?"). My partner (male presenting) went to the bar before I showed up and said everything was fine when he talked to him, but noticed his attitude changed as soon as any female or fem presenting people come to the bar (I'm non-binary but my voice is higher). The bf and I were intrigued and decided to check this place out for dinner one night. I liked the look of the place: small, funky, lots of tiger art and filled with interesting-looking people. It was already in full swing when we got there but we managed to score a little table in the corner. After perusing the menu we decided to share: buffalo "vings" (fried tofu rectangles slathered in very pungent buffalo sauce--I love buffalo sauce but this was even a bit too much for me); vegan corn dog basket with fries (tasty but how can you go wrong with deep fried corn dogs); spinach and beet salad (pretty good, but they went a little overboard with the dressing). We also decided to try some of their cocktail specials--one of them was this lavendar lemonade with bourbon thing and it was WAY overdosed on the lavendar. After a sip all I could say was, "I feel like I just drank a spa." It was better to stick with the beers. We really wanted to like this place more than we did, but unfortunately for us our visit was just OK. Love the concept, but the execution fell a little short for us that night. read more

Is there any way of giving out zero stars?When they first opened, I used to roll into this place several times a week for after work beers and interesting drinks from knowledgeable bartenders. I would drag my girl in every other weekend for breakfast. The Tiger Feast was truly a feast, and the Bloody Marys were made with house infused vodka and skewers of house marinated veggies. Over the course of about six months, I got to know the staff, and even chatted up the owner. The place was spotless clean, and the food and service were excellent. It didn't take too many conversations with the owner to realize that he was a complete tool who cared nothing about quality, customers, or his staff. My favorite bartender was soon let go, so I pretty much stopped going(He now works at Belmont Station, if you want good 'tending). Over the next few years, I stopped in for breakfast(usually if friends were going). I found that the Tiger Feast was now just a eggs-n-meat breakfast with an extra egg and less meat for more money, the food was ALWAYS overcooked, unless it was the 'hash whites', and the service was abhorrent. About a year ago I vowed to never go back. Unfortunately, some out of town friends and others gathered there this morning, so I decided to bite the bullet and go back. As usual, I got 'hash whites', $20 pitcher of bloody marys that yielded four 8oz. glasses and 3/4 pitcher of ice, 45 min wait for food, no check in by the waitress/bartender at any time, EVER, and two of our friends' orders didn't arrive until the other 6 people had completely finished their meals, which they still didn't get right. By the time we were ready to leave, the entire table had decided to never return. And we'll all be telling our friends. This place epitomizes why Portland eaters need to re-evaluate their tipping practices. If more people tipped for the quality of food and service they received, you can bet places would step up their game. FYI-The men's room has also now become the #1 most disgusting craphole in the city. And you know that says a lot in Portland. Just shit on the floor; looks like others have. If I've said it once, I've said it a zillion times, if I can get out of your pub with only one beer in my belly, your service blows. The one beer I had--the Double Mountain IRA--was awesome, but I only...had...one. The service was just awful. The food came out of the kitchen in slow waves. We were with vegan friends who ordered the vegan biscuits and gravy. I am a carnivore, so I got the regular, full-power biscuits and gravy and a side of bacon. My biscuits came before anyone else's food. I crumbled the bacon on top of it--oh, my quivering tastebuds. Unfortunately, the waitress soon came back and announced that my biscuits were of the vegan variety--NOT ANYMORE! We were also told that they didn't have any vegan gravy left, so one of our vegans was SCREWED. Seriously? That was bad form. The waitress was very apologetic and took an order off our tab to make amends, but the damage was done. Somebody didn't get her biscuits and gravy and I felt terrible with all that bacon crumbled on top of it. The table next to us was also complaining about the miserable service. If you go to this place, I highly recommend that your order two beers at once because that waitress will never come back for another drink order. read more

So many of my thoughts about well-loved establishments begin with "I really wanted to love this place but..." and this goes for the Hungry Tiger. I live up the street from HT and I'd love to be able to pop in for a drink every now and then but that's a difficult task to accomplish when I stand at the bar for ten minutes without being acknowledged. Really reduces the convenience of living nearby; I could've walked over to a bar on Burnside and been drinking a beer by that point. To be fair I've had pretty good service at other times but the reality of bartending is that it's a customer service industry and a basic aspect of customer service is that you, at the very least, acknowledge the customer. Meaning a basic response to someone walking up to the bar should be something to the effect of: "hey there, I'll be with you in a second!" Instead, my experience (on a non-busy night) went like this: walk up to the bar wait 10 minutes while trying make eye contact with four different employees get addressed by a bartender and ask if they will be showing a game on TV get told it's on the monitor in the other room bartender immediately asks patrons next to me, drinks in hand, what they want next they respond and I chime in asking if I can get two Rainiers bartender tells me to "hold on" which is my breaking point and I walk out I am a customer service employee myself so I know the shit of the industry but you do not tell a customer to "hold on." I'm not a dick customer, I simply want some acknowledgment, sorry. I know that certain customers are favored for one reason or another but nothing ticks me off more than being snubbed- it's arrogant. A business benefits from my money as much as anyone else's. All that said, weekday nights I have experienced better service. I like the food and I like the environment. I'll go back, hence two stars, but I won't hesitate to walk out if I have to deal with shitty service because no establishment is worth a bad attitude. read more

A vegan meets omnivore bar seemed like the perfect place to satisfy the tastes of everyone in our party, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. 5 minute wait for a table? No problem. 10 minute wait after seating to get menus? Bothered. An HOUR for the food to show up? Annoyed as hell. We observed that this place has some serious kitchen issues. The tickets are put in the queue randomly and the kitchen guys don't know how to work as a team. I found myself hoping that Gordon Ramsey would materialize and give them tips on how to run a more efficient kitchen. I ordered one of the infamous vegan corn dogs and it was exactly that - a vegan corn dog. With all the hype, I was hoping the batter would heal lepers or something else miraculous. Not so much. Just a corn dog. The rest of our food was decent and cheap. The pancakes were dense, but surprisingly moist, The crazy long wait time spent watching food go to the tables of people who arrived after us turned what would have been a relatively unremarkable meal into an endurance test. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the server was a sweetheart and discounted our meal 50%. This may also have happened she saw me writing a "Don't Yelp angry, Don't Yelp angry, waiting an HOUR for my food" quick tip. She was incredibly apologetic about the situation, and was despondent that her stink eye to the cooks wasn't effective. I've gone by this place a hundred times thinking I should stop in for a bite, and today I realized I should have passed it up at least another hundred times. I'm another in the "This place used to be good" camp. Years ago my climbing friends and I would come here every night after climbing together at the PRG. There was a bartender there...I think her name was Melissa? She was rad. Great service, funny, good drinks. The food was tasty, and the one time I was accidentally served a meat burger rather than the vegan one I ordered, the cook was so apologetic that I got hooked up with amazing meals for the next couple of months! Then they switched up managers, and the "new" (I think she'd been a server before that) manager fired Melissa, and that's when things started going to hell. At first it seemed exciting (minus the fact that our favorite bartender was gone, which was a real bummer), because the vegan menu became pretty extensive. But with that came hipsters. Actually first it was all of these super metal, big haired types. Then hipsters. And the service declined severely. Every time I went in there it seemed worse, so I started going less and less. I wanted to go more, because their vegan reuben is the BOMB, but honestly it got to the point where it really wasn't worth the hassle. The last time I was in there was about 8 months ago, and I had to leave without receiving my food after waiting for OVER AN HOUR. And that was after the half hour wait to even order. Which was after a 20 minute wait to get a drink. I hate the fact that places like this will still get traffic based solely on the fact that they serve vegan crack food. It's like they feel that they can get away with whatever they want because nobody else is offering up the same type of late night vegan drunk food. I love this place. Amazing food. I love being able to order vegan food without making a ton of changes. They serve vegan, vegetarian and meat options. The vegan corn dogs are the best, and I mean best. They also have vegan ranch and thousand island which is hard to find. The food is good and the drinks strong. They have burgers, nachos, wings, fries all vegan, vegetarian or meat. There is restaurant seating as well as bar seating. We prefer the dim, cozy bar seating. It's a great place. read more

There's a pool table in the "dining" room meaning you have to watch that you don't get hit with a pool cue. So it's a bar now, not a cafe/restaurant. OK. They also have new TVs here and there not just one over the bar. Good points: - My partner had the vegan mac-n- cheeze which was super tasty. - They had the 'wings' special - $.50 for tofu. What a difference a few years can make. What was once a fun dump with great vegan food, is now just a dump with terrible vegan food. The mac and cheese was lumpy, flavourless gruel, the corn dogs were soggy, flaccid and also flavourless. Additionally, the atmosphere suuuuucked. I would have liked to order more food, but after being made to feel like I had ruined the bartenders night by ordering. Five years ago I could have (and actually did) eaten here multiple times a week and never tire of the food. Alright. I dated a guy once whose mother told me that she judged a restaurant based on their bathrooms. If that is the standard by which I judge Hungry Tiger, then they fail...miserably. Seriously, it was one of those situations where you go in and try your hardest not to touch any surface, pop a squat, hurry out, and rub sanitizer over your entire body. I mistakenly went on the Wednesday $1 vegan corndog $1 PBR night. I don't like corndogs, and I sure as hell don't drink PBR unless I'm playing flip cup, beer pong, or some other nonsensical game that is just designed to get you drunk. Service was good. Menu was okay. I think the breakfast would have been good if I was drunk. The lettuce in the salad was wilted, clearly that is not the sort of thing to order at the Hungry Tiger. Will I ever come here again: only if I am wicked hammered and am too far gone to notice a filthy bathroom, mediocre menu, and need some vegan grub. At that point, though, I might just opt for a cab and go to the Roxy downtown. They used to have the big Hungry Tiger up near Laurehurst Theatre, but that closed and this place opened up. Its smaller, still got a bar, and plenty of space to eat and hang out. Its close by the local SE growing shop community, such as the vegan mini-mall strip on SE Stark and 12th. My boyfriend and I got the vegan fried wanton ravioli to share, it was really really good. Sweet on the outside and savory on the inside. We then share the vegan mac and cheese. It tasted good but it did not taste like mac and cheese. it was more like a vegan cream sauce. I think it would've made a good fettiucini dish. My vegan friend got the squash soup and the yummy tofu salad. Very good! My meat eating friend got a burger with tots. She said it was the best burger so far in Portland. She loves burger. Oh yeah did I mention that they have free wifi and open until 2am on most days? JACKPOT! PS: Beware of the bartender! He is a total asshole. The first time I went with my boyfriend and he was nice to us. The second time, I went with my friend, and he gave her so much shit for asking about vegan options. VEGAN CHICKEN AND WAFFLES. If you don't order that item when it's on a menu, I feel bad for you, cos. And butter and syrup. Did I mention that part? Oh yeah. Fan-effing-tastic. The tofu had some kind of mouthwatering secret blend of herbs and spices and a yummy crust. This is the kind of tofu I would use to introduce someone to tofu. Flavorful, firm, delicious. My friend got the hamburger with a fried egg on top and fries and was very pleased. I sampled the fries and they were indeed top notch. Next time, I would probably split an order of the chicken and waffles because it is very filling and rich (duh, right, I know, but I just had to go all the way.) I am very excited to try the biscuits and fennel gravy, which I've heard great things about, and also the Happy Hour. They had me at corn dogs. I was spying my neighbor's tofu scramble, which was huge and looked delish. The space is cool - fresh and young and hip. They had a great microbrew selection, which can be purchased at weekend brunch. There are also several different stuffed tigers watching over you, if that's important. It's a four instead of a five because we, like others, had to wait too long for our order, especially based on the business of the restaurant at the time. So do come in when you've got time to spare! Went here for a vegan dinner not expecting much given the reviews. Got something much much worse. There is a separate vegan menu. Yay! Oh wait... nothing on the menu looks appetizing...First time that has ever happened to me at a vegan restaurant. Table is coated in a sticky film and the booths and floor are filthy . Each meal is basically a collection of low quality commercially processed foods tossed together, warmed in their stove, and served at a steep mark-up.The veggie burgers (which are just Boca burgers) are not even made here, which is stupid for a place marketing to vegans considering that this is what every meat-based restaurant offers on the menu as a conciliation to vegetarians and vegans. We have the wontons, mac and cheez and reuben from the vegan menu. Reuben is just Tofurkey wedged between two slices of greasy nasty marble rye. Wontons are delish but the sauce tastes synthetic. I don't even know what the hell is going on with the mac and cheez, but it tastes like a hybrid of pickle juice, limp noodles, and oil. Vegans that are accustomed to eating potato chips for lunch and frito wraps for dinner may be able to choke this rubbish down. Those that generally prepare their own meals with whole foods and fresh ingredients will find the quality of the food here perplexing and discouraging. I don't even blame the cook because its clearly the quality of ingredients that is at fault here. I hope to hell nobody that is thinking of turning vegan goes here to try out a vegan meal. Two stars because the drink menu is respectable. Waitress was good. Also they offer breakfast, which I have yet to try - and most likely won't. One more thing. People are calling this place a "dive". If this is a dive then it's the safest feeling dive that I ever went to and the prices certainly aren't dive level prices. Better described just as a dirty low quality restaurant. read more

Good food, but not worth the mediocre & sometimes super rude service. Most of the staff I encountered there either acted like they didn't want to be there, or treated me like an inconvenience. Not a good feeling when you're spending hard earned cash on a night out. Do better Hungry Tiger, you're my neighborhood bar!! read more
