What took me so long to go to Huber's? It's only been here since 1872! In case you haven't heard it's the oldest restaurant in Portland. When a friend invited my sister and I to go, I whipped out my trusty yelp app and checked out ratings and menu. The menu looked fine-mostly traditional American style, featuring their turkey dinner and Spanish coffee. I wasn't that keen on turkey in August, but our friend ordered it and was pleased. My sister and I have pretty much the same taste and usually like the same things on the menu! We decided to split 2 entrees-the chicken special of the day and beef stroganoff. The first thing Summer, our server brought out was their beer bread. We wish we had the recipe. I loved it so much I'd like to make it at home. Then we got our entrees. The kitchen kindly split our orders so we each got 2 plates! It was a LOT of food! And we loved both! We couldn't decide which one we liked better! I can't remember what the chicken special was called but it had cherry tomatoes lightly sautéed in it and a flavorful sauce. Our friend wanted chocolate mousse for dessert , and we couldn't just sit there and watch her eat it so we ordered our own (no sharing this time!). It's dark and very rich. She also wanted to try Spanish coffee. They put on quite a show. They pour triple sec in the bottom, set it on fire and it melts the sugar they put on the rim. In goes rum & kaluah, and finally a little coffee and some whipped cream on top. We all tried it and WOW! It's potent! If that's your thing you need to get it! Three sips was more than enough for me. Summer was an outstanding server. She talked to us like we were old friends, made suggestions and was just lovely in every way. Go to Huber's! I went with my brother who was visiting from out of town, and we were blown away by the service and food! He loved it so much, he went back later that night. I highly recommend the flaming coffee, it's made at table side. I also was blown away by the half and half turkey and ham dinner, tasted even better than my grandma's thanksgiving dinner (but don't tell her that). read more

I've been coming here for HH every once in a while because it's been solid and it's such a cool restaurant, one of the oldest in Portland. Prices are on the higher end. Feels like stepping back in time when eating out here. They specialize in turkey dishes. Happy Hour is still solid (although prices have went up like with most places). Food wise their HH food is pretty standard American items with some turkey dishes like enchiladas or liver thrown in. read more

We had a lovely dinner at Huber's Cafe last week. It was fun to go to the oldest restaurant in Portland. We went early, around 4:30, because we didn't have a reservation. We got seated immediately. As we walked in we saw that the venue was beautiful in an old school way. Lots of dark, rich wood booths and trim. Our server was Summer. She gave us excellent service and made us feel welcomed. We appreciated her suggestions and helpfulness. First came the beer bread. It's a sweet yeast bread that was served with butter. Really tasty! My sister and I split the Tuscan Chicken summer special and the beef stroganoff. We each got a large plate of each with plenty to take home. They were both tasty! Well seasoned with tender meat and al-dente noodles. I'd get both of them again. Our friend got the turkey dinner that Huber's is famous for. She enjoyed it a lot. Then, it was time to splurge on dessert. We all ordered the chocolate mousse. It's extremely rich and quite sweet. I thought the chantilly cream was a bit too sweet, but it did complement the dark chocolate mousse. Needless to say, we all ate ours up completely. Then, our friend wanted to try their famous Spanish Coffee. It was fun to watch the waiter fill torch the triple sec to carmelize the sugar the glass was rimmed with. Quite a show! The combo of triple sec, rum and kaluah with just a bit of coffee and cream makes for a potent drink. It was fun to try, but too strong for me! While the West Coast may have a short history, this is Portland's oldest restaurant! 1879. Iconic! I cannot say it's a must stop for tourists, but the Spanish Coffee & the show that comes with it might alone be worth it! A split bar and restaurant, I only came for happy hour on the bar side. The happy hour is fairly affordable. Mongolian skewers were tasty, but small. Liver pate was decent. Artichoke & Spinach dip was strange in a way my partner couldn't place, but felt it was sour or bitter. The real treat and show was the gentleman (see pic) who made our table side Spanish Coffee. Tried a light dinner during happy hour at Portland's oldest restaurant - Huber's Cafe - established 1879. Solid execution on some classics - Cesar salad, calamari fritte, and house-made cheesecake Surprisingly, the turkey sandwich, for which they are well known, fell flat. The turkey was fine but nothing special, and the bread was super dry. Verdict - Not going to rush back, but would definitely go back for happy hour and some calamari and a salad. read more

Enjoyed a lovely weekday lunch here today. I had the hot turkey sandwich, which is covered with gravy and served with a choice of mashed potatoes or dressing. I went the dressing route. It was very good and included a massive amount of fresh roasted turkey. My dining companion opted for the club sandwich which had multiple very thick slices of turkey breast and she said it was lovely. She substituted french fries for the coleslaw that traditionally is served with this dish. Very efficient and pleasant service in this historic restaurant. Beautiful dark wood covering all surfaces and historical hardware (such as the ample coat and had racks throughout.) Quite reasonable prices. This is a place I'd like to come back to for dinner sometime. read more

That Spanish coffee is cool I can't lie, the server I saw looked like they had this down it was pretty amazing to watch they have this down Wasn't the biggest fan of feeling so cramped in there but I also under stand it's a historical place that wants to tend to the growing community. The entrance of the area was confusing, we walked in and it felt like a fancy place, then they walked us to the back of the restaurant that looked a bit more casual. And that had its own entrance it was my first time there so that was a bit confusing. I had the special I'm going to be honest I don't remember what it was but I'm posting a photo of it! It was pretty good, it was a busy night and it took a bit for the food to come out and when it did I lightweight burnt my tounge. But thankful for the water always being full! It was funny how our table was silent with each of us enjoying our food. Pretty cool. read more

Huber's Cafe's claim to fame is being Portland's oldest restaurant. It certainly feels like they have maintained the original look and feel. I liked the pictures on the walls showing things from yesteryear. We headed there on a Saturday night to try out their happy hour. They were probably at 90% capacity and the two of us were seated immediately. They have a drink minimum per person, but getting one drink covers that. After we ordered our beers, we saw some staff members twirling flaming drinks in their hands, and we were completely enthralled. Not wanting to live with FOMO for the rest of trip, we decided to get one. It was a Flaming Spanish Coffee, which we ordered with decaf coffee. Tastes like an Irish coffee, but the show in itself is worth the price. The table side presentation is very fun. We learned that it was a slow day for the drink maker and he had only made 150 that day. On a holiday they may have 3-4 drink makers each cranking out 300! The other items that we got were the wings and bbq turkey sandwich. I thought they were fine as pub food to go with our beers, but really nothing more than that. I'll have to come back sometime to try their traditional turkey plates. If you're in the area, definitely worth a visit to check out the restaurant and to get a Spanish coffee! read more

This is one of those places that you can't miss here in Portland. It's got that whole nostalgic-vintage-classy-at-one-time-but-not-kitsch vibe going on... The good: we come here annually for the traditional Spanish Coffee which mostly didn't disappoint. The flavor and presentation were both exceptional, but we did notice that the cup was noticeably smaller. We didn't make a reservation, but they were able to seat us anyway at the Chef's bar. The folks preparing the food are very hard workers and never slacked off from preparing food: The bad: I ordered Fish and Chips and my husband ordered a burger. We had to wait for about 50 minutes for our food. The cook must have lost track of time because the fish was so overcooked that the fish nearly disappeared inside the breading and was VERY dark brown coming out of the fryer. It was inedible. The burger was fine as were the fries. To Huber's credit, they did not charge me for my meal. I don't know if they are understaffed, or if their kitchen area is just too small to serve a full house of people. We will go back for drinks, but will probably never order food again. read more

It is an authentic old-fashioned restaurant that has maintained its charm, recipes and original style. With its high ceiling and multiple seating arrangements, there was nothing cramped about this place. There even is a friendly hostess at the entrance to seat you. It was quite pleasant to experience a bit of Portland history while embibing some fine food at the same time. We entered through the historic bar area - it was really beautiful! We sat in the main restaurant which was nice, quiet, and comfortable. Our waitress was awesome, and the food was amazing! The prices were reasonable, and there was no waiting when we arrived. The location in right in the center of downtown Portland, so it was easy to get to. They had so many yummy desserts to choose from, but we were too full at the end of our meal, and we were on our way to a concert so we didn't want anything to go. So, we came back the next day! We had some time leftover before we needed to catch our train home, so this time we sat in the bar area, which was lovely. We had some of their famous Spanish Coffee, and it was quite the show! We still had trouble choosing a dessert, so we got one to eat there, and one to save for later! It was all so good, and we had great service again. read more

Stayed in Portland for the night and was looking up places to go. Found that the oldest restaurant was only a short walk away. I love me an old timey establishment. Came here and was totally charmed. It's a little bit of a maze finding it down a corridor behind one of the many doors that lead out to the street. There's stained glass in the ceiling. I believe they may be skylights but we came at night. Their drinks menu is an education in itself and full of history. Food was good. Service was good. We had such a great time! Loved the historic nature, and the room architecture and decor. Our servers were friendly and efficient. Lots of great options on the menu and we enjoyed all our food. Our Uber driver on the way over mentioned the Spanish coffee... and every table in the room ordered it! We decided that must be the thing to do. But we had the off menu Moroccan coffee (addition of Bailys), and loved it. Both the drink and watching the bartender make it tableside. Really delicious, not just a show. After ordering we received unexpected corn bread. Very hearty with a lot of flavor. We heard they are known for turkey, and my other had the turkey plate. Even the broccoli on it was great. I had grilled chicken on ceasar which was tasty, a friend had the chicken salad which she enjoyed. All I can say is WOW. My wife and I both LOVE the old-school restaurants that have a tremendous amount of history (like the Tadich Grill in SF) and Huber's is no exception. Dishes that you won't find anywhere else, like the Tom Turkey entree with all of the "fixings". I had the Chicken Marsala which was one of the best dishes I have had from anywhere. There are 2 sections of this place - the bar which is quite raucous and fun, and the "back room" area which is much quieter. We will definitely be coming back here! read more

They are known for it and its preparation is a show. They also house bake their beer bread, which is great. Because of that, I made sure to order the Baked Bread Custard Pudding, which was huge, wonderful, and priced well. I even had enough left over of it to take back with me. It's an institution. You go for the Spanish coffee and cocktails. They had some iconic dishes and the menu has a lot of variety. Reviews will focus on many things but I love the clam chowder. I believe it's made on site with lots of potatoes, clams and creamy sauce. It's hard to rave about clam chowder but it's exceptional. The garlic shrimp was also very well done. It can get crowded and with crowds come loudness and the place needs a good scrubbing, but it's Hubers. You go for the history, the Spanish coffees and yes the clam chowder. read more

What a special find! We have been coming for years to visit our son in Portland but have never been to Huber's. I think we found a new tradition! There's nothing like a pre-Thanksgiving night at Huber's! On the busiest night out of the year, everything was absolutely amazing. The food came out hot and delicious, the staff handled the chaos with professionalism and speed, and the drinks were incredible. Drinks: - The Spanish Coffee is a must get, the bartender who served us our drinks made the drinks in front of us. He did an elaborate performance that made getting a drink a whole experience. The drink itself is nothing to write home about, but I say it's worth it to get just for the possibility to see a fun performance Food: - I got the Beast Burger and I was honestly underwhelmed by it. I didn't necessarily think it was bad, but it wasn't necessarily good either. It's a 1/2 lb patty with a questionable combination of meats. The patty didn't taste bad or anything, it just didn't quite live up to the hype. With that kind of blend I was expecting something gamey, pungent, and bold. What I got was a very regular burger. It also comes out deconstructed in a way that wasn't very appetizing. - The Onion Rings are super greasy, but it's crispy and good with the side of ranch it comes with. This gets soggy quick so if you order this, eat it while it's hot. After 30 minutes the texture is going to become like a deflated bike wheel Ambience: - Apparently this is the oldest restaurant in Portland - The décor is basically the combination of dark mahogany wood, and red velvet - There's basically two main seating options. One is the large section with a bar under the stained glass skylights, and the other is a side area that is darker and next to the kitchen. The section under the skylights are better, but the side area is more accommodating for larger groups of 4+ Overall: I think it's worth it to visit just to experience the novelty of dining in an establishment that has so much history. The food doesn't really stand out, neither does the drinks. They're not bad, but they're also not necessarily good. The menu is large so there's a ton of options, and their drink menu is robust as well. I say it's worth it to go once just to go. read more

A coworker recommended I stop by, and I'm glad I did. David was our bartender and brought such great energy--he had an amazing personality and kept a genuine smile the entire time. He really puts on a show behind the bar. They're known for their coffee, but since that's not my thing, I went with an Old Fashioned and was not disappointed.
