She originally was in Fremont, where I live then moved here and I followed her even though it is a farther drive, because I can't trust anyone else with my hair like I trust her. Miranda is a haircutting guru sent by the punk rock hair gods. I usually dread getting my hair cut due to many bad experiences in the past, and used to content myself with shaving it into whatever mess I deemed fit, but she has consistently done an excellent job of styling my hair in ways that make me happy. I kept reading all of these rave reviews about MBS and had to go check it out. I had pretty high expectations on my way to my appointment and I am happy to say that I was not disappointed in the least. As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by a friendly and pleasant woman. Actually, almost everybody in there seemed really friendly. Jessie Hughes is a complete sweetheart. I am SO happy my appointment was with her (They recommended Jessie or one other person for my hair type and I am SO relieved I was placed with Jessie - after observing the other person, I KNOW my experience would not have been nearly as enjoyable - not to say that the other person probably wouldn't have done a fabulous job on my hair, but the personality is important to me too...I definitely need to feel comfortable with the person who is cutting my hair). Jessie is so easy to talk to, really seems to know what she is doing, offers up really great advice, gives tips on how to style your hair.... Truly wonderful. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Sipping on a glass of wine while my hair is being cut and colored is the way to go. If you like your hair to be cut with a razor, be sure to let her know. I have super thick straight hair and tons of it and she knew how to deal with it easily. She has a great eye for color, too. I got partial highlights and a cut for $135. This salon plays fun contemporary music and has great ambiance. They also do facials ranging in price from $60-100 and do all the waxing. Review Update: Even after five years, I still make the drive of almost an hour every two months to come see Nicole Avolicino. No matter where you live in the East Bay, the drive is worth it to see Nicole. Why? She is a hair genius! Nicole is a perfectionist & professional. I'm super picky when it comes to my hair (aren't we all?), and I only trust my delicate strands to Nicole. She listens intently to what I want, and will offer helpful suggestions to make my hair look even better. I've recently started noticing some gray in my hair (I'm only 30! WTF?) and decided it was time to start coloring. Nicole helped pick a gorgeous color that really compliments my skin tone and really makes my green eyes pop. I feel so pretty! And isn't that how we all want to feel after leaving the hair salon? :) Bottom line: MBS is a friendly, down to earth hair salon, and Nicole is my favorite stylist and colorist. Everyone I have encountered here has been so sweet and really excels in customer service, from the ladies at the front desk to the other stylists. I also love the plethora of products they have in their shop - (lots of OPI, Bumble & Bumble, Pureology and more, not overpriced either) so I always pick something up on my way out (currently I am in love with the Luxury Argon Oil, that stuff is amazing). She scared me a bit by her "all the soccor mom's has taken over the cut" but then gave me a nice racy cut with color to add in the next week or two... Upon the recommendation from a friend, I decided to try out Montgomery Beauty Salon. I wanted to do a new bang look - much like the new Nicole Richie look. I was very impressed that the salon managed to squeeze me in on a late Thursday night with only 24 hour notice. Good stuff! My hair stylist was Gretchen! She's super sweet and listened to what I wanted. I had a recent bad experience over my bangs - getting a pixie bang without asking - so I told her that. She gave me a great shampoo and started on my hair. I didn't want to take a lot of length off and she listened. She cut my bangs how I wanted! And the conversation was great! I met Miranda Nicole the best way you meet hair dressers-- at a party. her own stunning red 'do caught my eye & she didn't leave my sight without a business card in my hand. my wedding crept up & my regular stylist wasn't able to make it out to do my hair (shriek!) i contacted Miranda & she was not only available, but willing to come from Livermore to Saratoga at 7am. {i was in awe & she jumped to the top of my fave people list from then on!} although we weren't able to manage my original idea for a style, this girl worked long & hard to make it happen for me. (time + my hair texture would not allow it) not only did i get a gorgeous up-do for my wedding (& i had short hair!) I made a Yelp account just so I could rate MBS!! I've been going to Miranda for over a year (since Nov. 2009) at the recommendation of my cousins who got AMAZING haircuts from her/MBS. I wanted to get my long hair cut super short and trusted the Yelp reviewers enough to let Miranda take over a drastic change. I brought in a picture of a cropped hairstyle. Miranda asked me a lot of questions to make sure the style would fit into my lifestyle and so that it would work with my crazy thick hair. I was absolutely thrilled by the results!! I came back again about 5 months later and got an A-line cut (see my other pic for that one). Since then, I've returned about every 4-5 months to get a trim or an entirely different style. I've asked Jenny for everything from celebrity hair color to the most blunt straight across bangs you've ever seen. Jenny made me custom Lady Gaga clip in extensions for Halloween and my costume would have been incomplete with them! I've been going to MBS for about 2 years now... Jessica has been amazing EVERY SINGLE TIME! Every time I leave the salon I get TONS of compliments. Isn't it crazy how people can just identify that freshly done cut... it's either that or my confidence! When I leave the salon Jess always makes me look so fabulous, I absolutley love it! She is totally honest with her opinion and doesn't just tell you what you want to hear. She gives great suggestions that will work for you and your specific look. Ever since about 7 years ago, my cousin recommended me to Jennifer for a haircut. She has been my favorite stylist in the bay area ever since, even after trying a few "master" stylists in other salons around the SF bay area. Sometimes when I try to explain to stylists what I like and what kind of cut I want, they give me a puzzled look as if I'm speaking Pig Latin. Not Jennifer. She is able to translate everything I want and gives me an end product that is usually better than I had anticipated. She is knowledgeable about her profession, the craft, and also the science behind it. I believe that is why she remains so successful in her business. Her clientele these days are very limited so it is very difficult to schedule an appointment with her. However she has great staff at the front desk who will try to call you when there is a cancellation in order to try to get you in sooner if that is what you want. I've always lived in the south bay from Santa Clara to Sunnyvale, from Sunnyvale to Mountain View, and no matter where I moved to, Jennifer is the first stylist on my list to book an appointment with....even if I have to drive all the way up to Dublin (~45min) to get to her. read more

I had my hair cut by Miranda a couple of weeks ago and I am really glad I made the appt. Being a new mom I had neglected my appearance a bit, and was constantly pulling my frizzy curls into a pony tail ... and leaving it at that. She really helped defriz my curls and cut it into a really cute style. Even my husband liked it, which was a pleasant surprise. I liked the ambiance, the girl in the front was really sweet, and no one said anything about me bringing my son (who slept the entire time) in, in fact Miranda went out of her way to make sure no hair fell on him, and that he was cozy. This I believe comes from her being a young mom as well, we seemed to have some things in common. I really like her personality and style and think she has talent. I have followed Jennifer Montgomery across the east bay for 13 years. She has a way with color that can spruce up even the dullest of hair. She is creative when you are out of ideas and consistent when you are already enjoying a good cut. Jennifer now owns her own salon and hand picks her staff so they are all excellent. The prices are fair, especially considering the work done. Hair is such a personal thing and itcan be scary to recommend a stylist to someone but I ALWAYS recommend Jennifer and her associates every time I get a compliment, and The new clients are NEVER let down! Just returned from our first experience at MBS, where my 15 year old daughter had her hair cut and styled by Sergei. Let me say that she will NEVER be going anywhere else. Seriously...Sergei, the stylist, has magic hands!!!! My daughter didn't tell him what kind of style she wanted and let him do what he thought would be best. Her haircut came out looking beautiful and stylish...perfect for my daughter's facial shape. My mouth was agape after he finished. He is EXTREMELY talented. (Did you know he gives dance lessons, too?) Since we hadn't been there before and didn't ask the cost beforehand, I thought for SURE he was going to charge about $75. Especially since the cut looked like something a Hollywood stylist would do for an actress. Believe it or not, the total cost was $45, which included wash and blow dry. Guess I didn't spend enough because I ended up walking out with almost $150 in hair product. MBS is very clean and up-to-date. LOTS of magazines to read and plenty of space for a mom to sit and wait. The front desk employees are warm and very inviting. One tip...I forgot my checkbook and was told that some of the stylists only take cash or check. Thankfully Sergei takes Visa and Mastercard. I drove over the hill from Castro Valley to come here and we are definitely going to be regulars from now on. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MBS and Sergei. I only hope Sergei doesn't head for Hollywood. Honestly...this guy could become a top fashion stylist, not only based on his talent for styling, but based on his drop-dead gorgeous looks! read more

I had my big night for a total change in my hairstyle. First good thing...there was a cancellation and my appointment was changed to an earlier time. When I was called to confirm my appt., I was informed of the availability of an earlier appt. How great is that! I had my hair colored and highlighted. I'm receiving so many compliments on the hair color. Even my husband, who thinks going grey is a good thing, thought the color was excellent. The hair cut is wonderful. It's a tad bit shorter than I would have liked, but I should have been more alert to what was going on. I don't have to do much to it, other than wash, mousse, air dry, or light blow dry. Another huge plus. This new short do is saving me lots of time in the morning. Gretchen did a beautiful job. She has a delightful personality and seems to really care about her job, her client. She's a perfectionist. I definitely will go back. I really like the whole vibe at the Salon. I think someone posted that they thought it was pricey. I started going to Montgomery Beauty Salon a little over a year ago. I was a former Supercuts girl until they botched a cut one too many times. I had tried a few salons, looking for a permanent one, and never found one that I really loved, until MBS! I chose MBS because it was close to my new job, and got good reviews, and I couldn't be happier with it! I get my hair cut and highlighted by Jessie Hughes, and she does such a fantastic job. The first time I came in, I brought a picture of a cut I wanted, and she had no problems recreating it, with a couple adjustments for my hair. Each time I get it cut, she takes the time to really make sure that it's cut right. Jessie also does a great job with my highlights, and works with me to get the right combo of colors depending on if I want it a little lighter, or darker. The salon itself is really nice, and comfortable, and everyone there is very pleasant. They aren't the cheapest salon out there, but neither are they the most expensive, and at this point in my life I'm willing to pay a tad more to get a really great cut and color! I initially chose Nicole because her services were cheaper (used to be a Jr Stylist, now a Stylist), but to my surprise she was very attentive and provided great customer service! I brought in pictures of a hairstyle I wanted to copy and she asked questions to clarify. I asked for suggestions and she said I should go for a short cut. I was hesitant at first but she assured me that it would look great so I trusted her. Fortunately, I was right to trust her because everyone complimented me on my haircut! I found Montgomery Beauty Salon almost three years ago through its stellar reviews on Yelp. It's nice to see that its rating has stayed consistent over the years. I don't trust anyone but Nicole with my A-line bob. I'm half-Asian with nearly stick-straight hair, and somehow Nicole is able to give me the light, voluminous bob that I love. She's always super accommodating and patient, willing to trim that last half inch all around even after she's already dried and flat ironed it (sorry, Nicole, hahaha). Nicole is so good with my hair that I come back from my digs in LA especially so that she can do my hair! Marty is a consummate professional and stays updated on her craft by constantly taking classes and learning the latest techniques. I have been going to MBS for a couple of months now and I must say that this place rocks! We really recently moved to Dublin and needed to find a new salon. I was a walk-in client and was assigned to Jenny Chemerofsky - she got my haircut (very modern short cut with some bright blue chunky highlights on one side) right the very first time! I have found the staff very polite and helpful without being overbearing (appointment reminder calls, bringing me a drink while I wait, phone ettiquite...). Also, as an aside, I have a service dog- and we have always been made to feel comfortable and welcome from the very beginning!
