I've been with Hunter for 3 years now, we are not staying another year because of their manager Brittney lying to my face, I have a problem in the apartment reported via email over a month now, next day I went personally and they didn't know there was an email that somehow was overlooked, I went back yesterday because without fixing the issue I had before, somehow went to fix something that wasn't reported or looked by maintenance at any point and now we had a second issue for 3 days that they fixed already thank God, and she told me 6 different stories, just lie after lie, first said that my daughter sent her an email asking for that and she is reading the email, I called my daughter and said no, I told her that they haven't fixed the problem and created a second one, when I confronted her, she said somehow she learned about this, after a while she said I remember it was the previous tenants, we've been there 3 years, oh oh my bad, one of you called by phone, none of us did, it was maintenance when they went to check, never happened, so gets mad, cross her arms and said how do you want to proceed then, she is not professional, to address an issue lies to your face to try to see if go for it, I told her that im paying to have good conditions and she said, you should see my apartment's conditions, I don't care if she likes to live in the trash, I don't want to live like that. Just to make sure this is understood, I lived 2 years with Axiom echo park apartment, in those 2 years I had both heat went out in winter time and A/C went off in July, the lady in the office, Brittney as well, answered every time and actually seemed she cared, maintenance was there always within minutes to an hour and both times a part was broken, had to order it and then fix it, but, both times they took care of the issue by bringing heaters to my unit, 5 of them and I a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment, with Hunter is 3/3, and in the summer they showed up with air units and fans, not great, but at least I wasn't left to die like the Hunter lady has me here, not caring, if I was her boss, I would give her 1 chance to actually get her act together if that is not happening she should be fired. read more

Worst living experience EVER, expect to never get anything close to your full security deposit back because they need to use that $$$ to pay all the fines they are receiving from the city, etc. The building I was in was structurally unsound so they took out all the balconies for construction and there was no access to my unit for months and months when they said it would just be a "week or so". They never sent any updates or had any communication to the construction process and I was the one who always had to reach out and even then they could never give me a solid answer on when things would be completed. Do not rent from hunter star properties. Everyone at the office is mean and delusional. Very unhelpful with anything we asked about. On move in day, we noticed a smell in the basement, rust everywhere, the fridge smelled like fish, the place was overall filthy, there were cigarettes in the toilet along with dirty water; I could go on and on. None of the staff whatsoever are helpful or care about the tenets at all, especially Brittany. Brittany manages the houses and she is so unprofessional and rude it's unbelievable. It's a nice place to live; the location of my specific apartment was great for walking to class. Took only a few minutes door to door. However, I knew it was trouble when there was a ball of stanky hair that was unclogged from my shower drain sitting in my shower on move-in day. So someone unclogged it and left it for me. Yummy! The main problem was dealing with the office workers and getting work orders done. The first time I placed an order, a week passed and still nobody came to fix the problem. After I recalled and asked for an update, they said they had no record of my work order. The next time I placed a work order, a week passed without anyone coming to fix the issue. After I called the office for an update, they said someone has already come and the order had been completed. This was simply incorrect. I have many more stories similar to those. So if you live in a Hunter Star residence, be sure to call about work orders constantly. Otherwise, they'll never get done. They also never vacuumed the halls until midway through second semester. It was nasty. They even brought people on tours of the apartment before cleaning it. Which leads me to my next point. Once you tell them you're not resigning your lease, they'll bring people through to tour your apartment whether you agree or not. It's awesome. Haven't had any problems until I moved in. I moved in August 12, 2020. When I first walked in I noticed the smell, it was an unpleasant mixture of cigarettes and lord what else. I said no problem, bought plugins put them in every corner. The inside of the washer had a bunch of dirt, hair, and what I assumed was some type of dried up fruit. I said no problem, bought some Affresh, put the washer on self-clean. The tub and shower were still dirty, I said no problem, scrubbed it down, as I always do when moving to a new apartment. There even was a ant problem, again, said no biggie, went to the store and purchased ant repellent. Then I opened the dishwasher, it was the dirtiest, most disgusting thing I've seen in the apartment, and had tiny grey bugs waking along the inside of the door. I've posted pictures to the public on Google. I put in a service request on their website the same day, explaining what I seen. Two days passed I got no response so I mentioned it in person when returning my move in check in sheet. I spoke to Rachel, I stated to her what my problem was she replied "Eww that's gross" and proceeded to tell me that it was best I call for maintenance instead of requesting online, she also said that since a lot of people are moving in, there's a lot of requests and that they're taking care of the big things like air conditioning. She recommended I check back at the end of the month. Which was understandable so I patiently waited. Then end of the month came. I called to check my request and also mentioned I was having a issue with the stove, and spiders. I believe I spoke with Rachel again. The next morning I woke up to two spider bites, and still went out on my own and bought stuff to solve my own problem. A few days later, August 31, Maintenance comes and says he's here for the stove. He turned it on said it was working fine and was about to proceed to leave until I mentioned the dishwasher, I told him the issue, he peeked inside, closed it and said "one cycle should do it" started the dishwasher, then left. A few moment later I received an email saying that my online service request, (for the dishwasher) was completed. After the dishwasher stopped, I noticed it wouldn't drain, and was also frustrated and offended that would expect me to put my dishes into a filthy dishwasher that had unidentifiable bugs, that had only been rinsed with water. I called and spoke with Brittany, I explained to her my experience and how I've Waited over two weeks for nothing. Brittany tells me they never received a request, which I know was false because they received it 3 times. Brittany says she'll send someone out. September 11, the same guy comes to take a look at the dishwasher, he drains it, not sure how, and says "see it works" I told him it need to be properly cleaned he says he'll come back the next morning to clean it, he never came. I called today September 15th, and spoke with Lindsey. Lindsey tells me the maintenance guy entered that there wasn't a issue with the dishwasher. I told her it need to be cleaned, she says "we usually don't clean dishwasher, try running it a couple times". After a whole month, the final result is they're not going to resolve my issue. My final word for whoever reads this, do not rent with Hunter Star, I recommend Pittsley Realty, I should've stayed with them. It's probably better to live in the dorms or couch jump than live here. Hunter Star is only after money, nothing more. During my over 2 years of living here, I have experienced the following: * horrible customer service -almost all employees will roll their eyes at you and scoff - employees will hang up on you for no reason, specifically Britany. *incompetent employees - they say they put in a work order but never do and look at you all crazy if you asked for one - takes 90 says to "attempt" to fix an issue - hangs up on you if you have a question *no salting after snowfall - even if you get injured *NON-WORKING EMERGENCY NUMBER - my boyfriend and I got locked inside the security door in the apartment complex; we called the emergency number over 7 times, neighbors included, and NO ONE ANSWERED; we had to call the police to let us out of the building; when we confronted the company about this they said, "well, couldn't you just jump out the window" (we're the 3rd floor) *windows were sealed shut, even though they're supposed to open *filthy complexes *will deny company wrong-doings -there was a huge snowstorm and a company car was in the lot; the car got stuck so the salt man came and only salted around the company car so it could get out; all the other cars were iced in; I saw them do this, and told them when I asked if we could get salt for the building; the company manager laughed at me and called me a liar and then yelled at my for accusing them; I had video evidence of this occurrence. *no one wears a mask in the office (since the beginning of covid) *costs $50 to park in the lot This place is just a waste of time and money. My blood pressure raised every time I had to call them. There is no customer service and I'm surprised they can even legally operate! I'm so glad to not be living in this slum!! Run, don't walk. A small list of things that happened to us when they bought our apartment building and took over. 1. They came into our apartment unannounced when I was taking a shower to "fix" our heat. 2. Said heat was out for several weeks at a time in the dead of winter. 3. They sent out a notice that they were repaving the parking lot on Friday. We parked at a friend's. That was Friday. The only day they said they were repaving. Nothing happens on Saturday, we park in the lot. On Sunday we went out of town and came home to see that they had towed our car. Because their crackhead crew came back and decided they were going to finish it with zero notice. When we complained we received no apologies. Because Tiffany is as stupid as she looks. 4. We started the process of moving out during the last month. Because we were moving a long distance we would take a few things at a time. We still had two weeks left on our lease and our apartment filled with our things and came home to find that these small town thugs disguised as maintenance workers, changed our locks. These people are impossible and prey on the ignorant and ill informed. You could tell that they were not used to having tenants that know their rights and expect things to be fixed in a timely manner. Tiffany is intimidated by intelligent people and reacts aggressively when you ask why your car was towed illegally. Tiffany gets really upset when you have the audacity to ask for heat in January. I have leased an apartment for almost a year and have had no problems, however recently major repairs were due on our apartment. They had us all move to hotel rooms for the time being, the estimated time for completion was 1-2 weeks. It's now been over a month and they keep delaying the time they're saying it'll all be completed, as of right now they are saying it'll be done in 2 weeks but I cannot trust them anymore. They are still having us pay full rent and as far as I've been told we will not be getting any of it returned. The leasing office really worked with me to find the perfect spot for my next apartment, I believe her name was Brittney. I am not a student so I was worried about frat parties and just the typical college life. But with their vast amount of locations, I never had to worry about that. There were a few issues when I first moved in there were a few issues that I noticed with a light bulb being out, a loose cabinet door, and a few other minor things. I called the office and they put in a work order for me. Within a few days the maintenance man Javier came over and fixed the few issues in a prompt and very professional manor. They will take at least 3 weeks with any complaint/household issue that you have, even if it's something important like your all outlets in the apartment not working. The siding of the apartment complex on spiros has been partially ripped off for almost 3 weeks now, with a large portion blowing in the wind which is VERY loud in my daughtbedroom. My daughter has called multiple times letting them know it's waking her up at night and asking to get it fixed. Nothing. They will also completely wipe your security deposit, regardless if you clean, so don't even bother. Washing machine was broken for over 2 weeks. Basically they claim "someone is coming" and never address the issue until you have to get aggressive. I have leased with Hunter Star for nearly a year at this point. The apartment I'm in is in good condition overall. If you ever have any questions or issues, the office staff is more than willing to assist and they're easy to work with. I had one issue with my water tank popping a hole at 5 am on a Sunday, called emergency maintenance and the employee was inside my apartment within 15 minutes to shut off the water and run to the store to replace the leaking piece. Hunter Star also brought in a contractor to clean out the water from the carpet for my apartment and the one below. The showroom apartments in the office are nearly identical to the actual buildings (a few minor, negligible differences). During winter, the staff work all hours to clear the lots of snow so residents can access vehicles in the morning. Apartments are located within walking distance of campus or near the university bus stops. Finally, the apartments are the best priced for the quality in the area. I spent months looking for a great deal and so far Hunter Star has proved to be worth it. read more

I decided to live at Hunter Star Properties because I was told it is one of the better properties in the area. That person's experience was a fluke (or maybe they have low standards) because the problems began on my move-in date and progressed from there. Hunter Star has a model apartment in their leasing office so you can get a feel for what the apartments look like. I can assure you that what you see in the model is not what you get. I figured that would be an issue and I asked to do a tour of an actual apartment in person. I was told I could not do that because all the apartments were being rented and I wasn't allowed to enter someone's property if they were in the unit. I was told they were to capacity and no units were available for me to view. That seemed a little fishy but I asked Taylor (she no longer works there) if she promises the model looks like the unit and she assured me that it did. She said she has lived their for two years and she loves her place. After signing my lease and settling on a move-in date, I prepared to move into my new place! I earned a position in an early start program in my program and begged Hunter Star to move in a few days earlier. I was scheduled to move in on August 14, 2018 and I needed to move in a few days prior to get prepared for my program. Hunter Star would not allow it and said I needed to move in on August 14th at 12pm because they scheduled cleaners, carpet cleaning and painters to prepare my apartment for my arrival. I was forced to find alternative housing - at an extra expense - for a few days because of this issue. I was upset but it was all worth it since the apartment was being cleaned and painted. When I arrived at my apartment on August 14th, the cleaners walked in right after me. Nothing was painted, cleaned, replaced or ready for my arrival. The man who did the move-in paper work with me promised to buy me and my family dinner for the night, and promised to help my parents and I move in the heavier items to remedy the issue. None of those promises came through. He never contacted us again. The microwave in the unit did not work. The water heater was rusted. Every closet in the unit was scuffed, dirty, and missing shelves. The lights needed bulbs, the mirror in one bathroom was cracked at the bottom, and the blinds in the living room are all different colors. The blinds in the bedrooms were broken and missing pieces. When my mom asked the property manager Tiffany Meadows about all of these issues she responded, "Well what do you expect? This isn't the Taj Mahal". When we spoke to the property manager Tim about these issues he stormed off and said, "I don't feel like I'm being heard so I'm going to walk away! This is ridiculous." Most recently, I have had an issue with snow removal. I have asked repeatedly that they put down salt in the parking lot, on the walk way into the building, and shovel the snow in the lot. I have not seen one piece of salt and the snow removal team is completely useless. Just this morning I walked outside to find my car and others barricaded in our spots by a large bank of snow. I missed a class because of their negligence and when I called to ask if someone could come out and shovel the snow so I can get out of the lot they told me to take the bus. I have never been late on my rent or any payment. I worked hard to be able to afford the $780 rent for this horrible apartment scheme. Hunter Star Properties has absolutely no respect for their residents and are horrible property owners. They cannot keep up with the demand of each property and they neglect their duty to their residents. I would never wish this strife on anyone. My advice to you is to RUN in the other direction and seek a private property owner. Hunter star does NOT deserve your coin. Period. read more

This company is terrible. They want their rent on time but when you have a problem, they never fix it. It takes them months to come in and fix it. I had bees in my apartment and it took them a whole school semester to come in and fix it. I had to sleep in on my apartment every night worrying about getting stung by a bee. Most of my friends and family got stung by bees whenever they came to my place. After a while everyone stopped coming to visit me because they were scared of getting stung by bees. BEWARE‼‼ I also had a gas leak problems that didn't get fixed till I left the apartment building. Please do not put yourself or your child's life in this situation. When we moved in, we had a broken toilet and blinds and screens missing in some of the bedrooms. The blinds and screens were actually a pretty big deal because we moved in during August and it was HOT. It took them over a month to deal with this stuff that should have been taken care of before we moved in. The staff was generally pretty rude and unconcerned with any problems we had. We didn't have a door on the back entrance to the apartment building, which lead into a shared hallway, for the first five months I lived there. This was both a safety issue and really drove up our heating bill in the winter. I complained about this several times to no avail. I eventually just made up a story about homeless people sleeping in the hallways, and only then did they finally take action put a door up. They also had very short office hours and no way to contact them after 5 pm or on weekends. They have an "emergency hotline," which is just an answering machine that nobody apparently checks. The water stopped working in half of the building on a Friday night. Nobody answered or responded to the emergency line, so I had to go stay at my parents house until they fixed the problem. Also, our refrigerator broke on a weekend. Nobody responded to our repeated calls until Monday, so all of our food went bad. They really cleaned us out when we turned over the keys. We didn't have any massive keggars at the place or anything, so the apartment was in pretty good shape. They charged us for a bunch of stuff that was already damaged before we moved in. I knew the guy who rented the place after me, and when I visited him, I noticed that they didn't even fix the "damage" they charged me for. And they probably charged the new tennant for it when he left, too. I don't know what else to say. They aren't the only crappy rental company on campus that tries to rip-off naive first-time renters, so take your pick. Take tons of pictures when you move in and send them copies with an itemized report of everything when you move in to try and protect yourself when you move out. read more

As everyone knows, due to the coronavirus outbreak, NIU has ended their face to face educating for the year, and all students will now be e-learning. In addition, a stay at home order has now been issued for the state of Illinois. My son has been home during the extended spring break, and literally now has no need to return to DeKalb when classes resume on Monday. I called Hunter Star on his behalf to inquire about whether they are considering allowing students to end their leases (one payment) early in light of this new development. If I could give Hunter Star -1000 stars, I would. They have no type of urgency to all of the issues that come with THEIR own units. They're not attentive, they don't seem to care, and they just rather not be bothered with anything. I think the only reliable employee there is Skylar. Now Brittany- don't even get me started with her. She has been put in a high position of authority and she always lies to the tenants when they have a complaint or request and claim she can't speak with them because she's on the phone, when I've literally seen her not on the phone while saying this. She's rude as hell and she really doesn't care about what's going on in the units. Who put her in her position? I don't know, but she needs to get checked. Hunter Star gets irritated with tenants over any little thing, because they're not doing what they're supposed to. So when tenants express their concerns and need something fixed, they get mad at the tenants for that. Make it make sense FIRE BRITTANY. She's so terrible lol. Pittsley is probably your best bet if you're looking for housing in Dekalb. Hunter Star is deceiving and trust me, you will regret choosing them. I've seen so many social media posts about all these tenants having mold, roofs caving in, then they always say the contractors are out of town. If you want to live in a unit and constantly have issues and then have them not want to fix it, go ahead and go with Hunter Star. They're great with that. With that being said, they are getting sued. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I wrote a review 4 years ago when my daughter lived here to attend NIU and it was bad then. Now 4 years later she has a ding on her credit report saying she owes $1,046 in damages! When they left Hunter Star 4 girls were living there. One of the girls has a puppy on the basement bedroom and was never home. The puppy destroyed the BASEMENT unit. The rest of the units were clean. Hunter Star had that girl sign an agreement stating she was responsible for the damages. Now 4 years later they are holding two other the other girls liable. My daughter can't rent a new place now because this is ruining her credit! They already kept their security deposit as well!! They do not care about the college kids. It's all about money to them! They've thrown away the documents the girl signed and now my daughter and the other girl are suffering because of it. Do not let your college aged kids rent here!! read more

They are terrible. We told them we have a black substance that might be mold and we have mentioned it three times for over a month and they said they would get to it and they still have not. Our heat has broken twice this weekend. Below zero at times at night. Someone rushed to fixed it at noon the next day and didn't actually fix it. We called the city and lawyers on them and they finally cared enough to contact us. 12 hrs later the heat broke again. In October it took 4 days for them to get out to fix the heat. They left a broken fridge in our kitchen for weeks and never come to help in a timely manner. Overall they are Horrible. They have one guy for all the heater issues and I sympathize with the maintenance worker because he is over worked and cannot do a quality job. I suggest having a lawyer and knowing the housing codes in dekalb if you rent with Star because they only care when they are threatened. My partner and I moved out on August 1st. We detailed cleaned the entire apartment before we left. I'm talking scrubbing baseboards, wiping down the blinds, new drip pans, you name it. On the copy of our deposit reimbursement, there are random charges for cleaning, burns, steam cleaning, etc. These charges were not a part of the lease terms as money that would be taken out of our deposit. We were supposed to get $815 back. We got $194. Our neighbors who moved out at the same time got even less. I can promise you that both of our apartments were left in pristine condition, with just normal wear and tear from living there for two years. Tom is a crook and a slimy businessman. In the past 3 months our heat has broken twice. Both of which they took 4 days to come in and fix. The response time to issues is horrendous and the management team does not value their tenants safety. In response to the heat being broken the gave us space heaters to heat our house but are unable to use them because the circuit blows when more than one is plugged in at a time. We were forced to sleep in a house that was 30 degrees. This truly put my life in danger. I would not recommend Hunter Star Properties to my worst enemy a shame of a leasing agency. It amazes me that they are still in operation today because they break so many of the City of DeKalb's compliance codes. read more

They called me told me my father was approved for Apartment come pay the deposit into every he's been approved the very next day after I paid the deposit they called me and told me he wasn't approved OK with his deposit my father is disabled and about to be homeless they said to take a few weeks why was he approved one day and then denied the next OK give him back his deposit like your turkey he shouldn't have to wait four weeks for his deposit if he gonna be home with her already talk to a lawyer hunters the property is in the wrong he should have the stuff for your mistakes this is the worst place to rent from only thing I want is your money we turn my five security pass my fathers disable has canceled all dialysis you try to find a place to live with him his grandkids he made his money ASAP or I will be getting a lawyer because our way to get advice from a lawyer and can't stop properties in the wrong and I will come to the office every day until my father get his deposit back thank you and have a blessed day read more

Was told I could not rent a one-bedroom apartment with a male roommate unless we were married.. Told us it was a city wide policy, and they couldn't control it. No other renter has ever told me this policy and I couldn't find it any where based off of research. This is discrimination against unmarried couples. read more

The Property Management at 807 is VERY poor. They bully college kids and won't speak to a parent when confronted. Someone damaged the common hallway and they charged everyone in the apartment. How is that even legal.? They literally have not cleaned the common area or blown off the garbage and debris for 3 years. There was no heat for 1 wk in Minus 30 degree weather. Following the Florida Condo collapse, look at the structural defects on the second floor. For 3 years nothing has been addressed with rusting beams that are literally bending. They never clean up the rotting mess either. For 1 year a dog shit on common area on second floor and nothing was done. Honestly, I don't think they EVER walk the property. Beware. Location is good for college, but not worth the rude, lying property managers that assume all college kids are bad. We pd rent on time and never damaged a thing, but were always treated with disrespect. Moving in was a disaster because they NEVER informed us of a thing. When you ask, they claim they sent the info. TERRIBLE. I would not recommend star properties to anyone, the people that work there are so rude and they try to rob you of all your money. We had a 450$ fine for hanging pictures on the wall, and over all fees of $1,600 from this place. Dont ever rent from this company. read more
