This place is horrible. Inattentive staff. Long like really long wait times. Expensive.

i would not take your animals here my 4 month old puppy has been having an allergic reaction and we've been waiting for 3 hours we brought out concerns up to them about his symptoms getting worse and he's breathing is sounding Weezy and we were told they can't do anything for us it is also very expensive for very poor service the lady at the front desk does not even seem to be worried about helping my puppy. we have left and are now bringing him somewhere else. i am very disappointed. read more

I was a bit worried about taking my kitten here when he developed respiratory distress because of previous online reviews but I was VERY impressed by the entire staff, their kindness and patience with my little guy and their competence! The vet went through the various options for treatment and have his honest opinion about what was probably not necessary, thereby saving me hundreds! I'm in the medical field and asked them to show me how to administer intradermal hydration, for future reference. They actually performed the procedure in the exam room and went through it step by step for me! I would definitely recommend them! Holy old reviews. Bad bad place.. Long story short we took our Lucy in for problems when she was in labour with her pups. She needed and emergency c section and we arrived at 11 am and 6 hours later they decided to do the surgery and she did not survive the surgery. So we brought home 8 pups with no mom because they wouldn't listen. This is not first experience with this place. I cannot rate even with 1 star. NOT an emergency clinic! read more

I literally ran my cat there today and they took us in immediately, despite it being a Sunday on a long weekend (Sept 5, 2021). It seemed like an issue with his diabetes and he wasn't well. I would like to start this review first by saying how appreciative and thankful I am for not only the people in general who work at emergency vet clinics but also their sacrifices made in order to be open after normal hours.  Having the availability of a 24-hour emergency vet is vital for all in times of need with our fur babies and I recognize it is not an easy job at any time of the day.  While I want to make clear my gratitude for the services available, my personal experience at this clinic was horrific.   Living in Muskoka leaves this location as my closest option of an emergency vet.  I left home late in the evening to take my poor little kitten here as he was very sick.  We arrived at the clinic around 10pm and after 5 hours of being in clinic and various testing, the diagnosis was that his kidneys were failing and in their opinion, his condition was as bad as it could be.  I was first presented an option of putting him on IV for 3 days with a cost of $4500 but there was no guarantee that it would work, or the choice to put him down.  Let me be clear that the money was not an issue in the case of my cat and the decision to be made.  The anguish in determining how to proceed was based solely on his chance of survival.  During the next hour or so, back and forth, I was presented with additional options of trying the IV for 24 hours to see if there was improvement for $2500 and if there was could then continue for the full 3; then, it was stated it could be longer even and actually up to 10 days required which would be $10,000.  Completely devastated, and confused because on one hand they present these options but in the same breath state it's unlikely he'll make it, I finally broke down and asked the vet straight up, what would he do in this situation, with the knowledge of how bad my kittens condition was.  After being told how far gone my kitten was and how it was not likely that he would improve short of a miracle happening, he had the audacity to say to me that if I didn't go through the option of minimum 2 day testing I would "go my whole life with regretting I didn't do something about it". Now I'm completely shocked.  I understand in this field of work that you need to maintain some detachment, however, this man had ZERO compassion me in my emotional state and it was very clear to me from this statement that it wasn't actually the best interests of my pet that were at the forefront of his concern, rather, it was a further attempt to take advantage of someone at their lowest point to make money.  The saddest part about it, is we would do anything for our pets and it probably works in a lot of cases for them to get you into their trap.     Thankfully I am smart enough to understand from being told that I would regret not going through with additional fees even though they said it was unlikely to be successful that this is just a ploy to get people to spend money when they are at their lowest point.  Imagine this: Put your pet on IV for 24 hours little improvement? Sure...now wait 2 more days. Likelihood is still low but they made a little more improvement so what do you do?  You continue because now you've paid all this money, how can you stop?  You wait and you hope and you pray and at the end of the day, you lose because they told you at the beginning, "he was too far gone".    This night I made one of the most difficult decisions of my life and decided it wasn't fair to let him suffer any further, in pain, scared and lonely for a few extra days he would have had and confirmed to put him to rest.  It's bad enough to have to make that decision, but then at  5:30 in the morning, while I am cuddling my baby for what I know will be the last time, a lady comes into the room asking if I am ready to pay!  They hadn't even put him to sleep yet and I wasn't done saying goodbye before they were at my throat for their money.  The complete lack of professionalism and bedside manner I experienced at this clinic is appalling to say the least, and I wish for no one to ever have to experience what I did.  Our pets are our family members and what we experience when we go to emergency clinics should be compassion and caring, not making an extra dollar gouging us and guilting people into decisions for which you yourself are giving conflicting information.  I would not recommend this location to anyone at any time.  Drive the extra time to take your pet to another location that actually gives a sh*t about the animal they are supposedly caring for. read more

I understand that service is difficult during COVID and I appreciate everyone is doing their best but many times just showing compassion can go a long way. I brought my very ill one year puppy to HVE and then to an animal hospital in Toronto - Animal Health Services . The difference was completely opposite. At Huronia it took almost 30 minutes just to get him inside at the Toronto Animal Hospital they came out within 5 minutes. At HVE it was 3 hours before I spoke to a vet at AHS we had a full overview of my dog's condition in 20 minutes. Ever time I spoke to HVE it took hours to get to speak to someone- at AHS I got his VET tech immediately. The vet called exactly when they said they would and told me to call any time I wanted an update. At Animal Health they made sure to tell me my dog was getting hugs. At HVE they showed no compassion about my dog and I continued to be told how busy they were. At AHS they shared that 3 of their vets were in COVID isolation but that that would not impact my dog's care. Animal Health sent photos at the end of the day with a complete description of how he was and let us know they knew it was an anxious time for us but that he was being not just medically taken care of but hugged and shown compassion. And in case you're thinking that must be because they charge more - no both were on scale in cost. read more

We came to HVEC when our dog, Jake, suddenly collapsed last night (on a weekend) and we felt we could not wait 48hrs to see our regular clinic. The intake was quick, courteous and comprehensive, and we were soon brought into a private area where Dr Trish explained her assessment and options to us in an incredibly compassionate manner. He had a tumor in his spleen that had ruptured and the blood loss into his abdomen had left him anaemic and weak, causing the collapse. His age and the nature of his injury meant there was no option for his survival, so she gave us time to understand and decide what was best, then came back when we decided and gently helped him on his way, literally calmly easing him to sleep and then letting go. We couldn't have asked for kinder or more compassionate care. A big thank you to everyone involved at the Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic, and our personal thanks from Jake to Dr Trish for helping him out at an anxious and frustrating time in his journey. Disappointed and cash broke is how I left this place, with a cat still sick! I brought my distraught cat in one evening at 5pm. When I handed him off, I suggested the technician wear gloves because the cat hates vets. After waiting 2 hours in the car (covid), the nurse called to get preliminary information. After another hour, the doctor called and said the cat is nasty so can they sedate him? I agreed. $100. After another hour the doctor called and said the cat is not responding to the sedation. Nothing he can do. He gave me meds for a POSSIBLE ulcer (after asking me if I thought it was an ulcer!). After 3 doses the next day it was clear it was not helping, so I brought him to my regular vet. He was able to look in my cat's mouth no problem, no sedation!! What a waste of $300 to HVEC! read more

I had to take my dog in on a Sunday after being hit by a car. I called as I pulled in to the parking lot and 2 vet nurses met us at the door with a stretcher. I wish I could have gone in with him but I understand the need for extra precautions with COVID. The vet called me within 15 minutes to tell me what they thought we should do. They were kind and understood our financial constraints and the receptionist helped us apply for special financing online while they worked on him. Thankfully he did well and the xrays and ultrasound showed no signs of significant damage. We were able to take him home after overnight monitoring in the hospital and lots of pain medication. I'm so thankful that they were there when no one else was open and recommend them 100%. read more

I had to take my cat in to the emergency clinic on a Sunday when he hurt his leg jumping off of a shelf. I called my regular clinic first but they were closed, and then I found this one online. They were friendly when I called and were very up front about the cost of the visit. A nurse saw him right away when we got there to make sure he was ok, and once the vet looked at him they gave me a detailed price break down of what my options were. I liked that they didn't make me feel like I had to do everything - because my finances were tight - but they recommended what would be ideal and then worked within my budget. We did xrays and luckily his leg wasn't broken he just needed pain medications. The vet showed me the xrays and made sure I understood what was going on, gave me a copy on a CD, and was very patient and attentive even though they had other emergencies coming in at the same time. The next day my regular vet called me to check on him because the emergency clinic had sent them all of the records - which I thought was great. I would definitely recommend this clinic - they were professional and really seemed to care about my cat - unlike some other clinics I had been to in the past. These guys are really wonderful. The front desk staff were kind and responsive (I've never been offered a cup of coffee at any other vet office I've been to, and I've been to more than my fair share), and Dr. Trish Wendell, who treated our dog, Scout, was great. While our dog's ailment turned out to be minor in the grand scheme of veterinary emergency practice (a voracious beagle who may have gotten hold of a piece of a corn cob), Dr. Wendell was thorough in her examination, intelligent in her assessment, and solicitous in her explanation of our treatment options and concern for our worry. One of the things I was most struck by is how carefully they explained the financial considerations at play. They are clearly alert to the realities of pet owners who love their animals, but also may be struggling financially. We've had ample exposure to vets in our dog's eventful history, and our experience at Huronia and with Dr. Wendell definitely ranked with our most positive experiences. I called the Hospital very late on a holiday. The nurse that answered the phone took my information on my dog. He gave me some critical information in a calm manner which kept me calm. (I appreciated it) He told me how to get my very large dog into my car, gave me directions to the Hospital not being from the area. When I arrived they were waiting and ready. They brought my dog to the back part of the hospital. I was impressed how clean it was and how friendly the staff was. They had all the medical equipment ready for him. They checked his vitals gave me some information on what they thoughts was going on and what they needed to do. They asked if they could give him some medications to make him more comfortable while we all decided how we wished to proceed next. They took my information and proceeded right away to give him medication to make him comfortable first which I appreciated. We talked about his previous medical history. Unfortunately it was extremely serious and life threatening. Even though I was extremely upset and was not thinking cleanly the staff brought me into a room. I sat on the floor and the Dr sat right down beside me on the floor, She explained what needed to be done and the risks involved. I was given an estimate of the surgery. The Dr was extremely understanding that I was upset. We decided to proceed with the surgery which I was not sure if my dog was going to make it out of as he was older. I am so so glad I trusted my instinct and trusted my gutt. My boy walked out wagging his tail a few days later. The staff at this hospital really care they always kept us updated on his health ,good and bad. They let us visit and gave us a "tuck in call" they called it, at night These people are truly amazing I just wish they were 24hrs I would drive up for all his care.
