We found another vet for 1/3 of the cost and they spoke to this vet, lied and blocked the transfer. Wheb we gave the approval to proceed with the overpriced surgery they did more tests and came up with a new diagnosis. Then they went back to recommending tests and surgery. We took our dog to another vet and didn't tell them where we were going. everything resolved including surgery, 2 night stay and a month of food, for less than 4K. we spent 6k at AEC and all they did was tests. When I raised the issue of blocking the transfer the management refused to consider any wrong doing. this place is owned by Vet strategy who sets their pricing and is impossible to reach. I took my cat to Animal Emergency Clinic of Durham last weekend after noticing he seemed unwell. We waited for 3-4 hours to be seen (even though the waiting area was empty), which was frustrating, but we understood that it was an emergency clinic. When we were finally seen, we were quoted $4900 for two nights of treatment (enemas, stomach pumping with laxatives, and IV fluids) or $3600 for one night with the same treatment. We were told that our cat had a condition called mega colon, and that this treatment would help get things moving. We opted for the one-night stay. The vet did call us during the stay and said that they had taken an xray and things looked like they were improving. When we picked him up, he was in significantly worse condition than when we dropped him off. His rear end was covered in feces and had mucous hanging from his mouth and all down his chest. I believe the clinic should have made some attempt to help clean him up as we had a scheduled pick up time. There was no vet available at pick-up to tell us how our cat was doing. Considering the amount of money we had paid, you would think the vet could take a moment to let us know how the cat was doing. To make matters worse, they sent us home with two medications but no pain medication, even though it was clear that our cat was in extreme pain. They told us to take him to our regular vet for further care the following day At our regular vet, we were given two options: surgery (which was not guaranteed to resolve the problem permanently and it would likely return quickly again) or to put him down. We were told the impacted feces were too large to pass through the pelvis. We had two xrays at the emergency clinic and were never told this. We decided to put him down, as it was clear he was suffering. Our cat was only 11 years old, and it was a heartbreaking decision to make. What really frustrates us about this experience is that the emergency vet did not clearly communicate how critical his condition was. We were made to believe that the one night treatment would help him and that we were giving him a chance. The lack of transparency and care is something we will never forget. I want others to be aware of our experience and consider the level of communication and care they expect when trusting their pets to an emergency clinic. I wish this situation had been handled differently, and I am devastated by the loss of our cat.

I had the worst experience this past Sunday when I took my sweet girl Sam in to be euthanized…read morebecause she was so sick with diabetes and internal complications. She stopped eating and drinking for 4 days, and she was telling me it was her time. As hard of a decision is for any pet owner to make, it should never be amplified by the indignity of being treated the way we were treated on that day. We had an appointment, but had to wait for a room for about 15 minutes in general waiting area. We were told it was to make the room "comfy", room number 3. Well for my two sons and myself, a comfy room in their terms was a small blanket on a hard cold floor and one rather uncomfortable chair. We sat on the floor with our girl Sam for 2 hrs and 15 mins before my eldest son walked out to reception to complain that no one had come in to see us yet. Looking into my dogs eyes for that duration was so painful, knowing was was coming, trying to be cheerful as she could read my every emotion. Reception was surprised we were in there and another girl was surprised no one had come in, they had forgotten about us. Another 15 mins went by before a vet Dr Jacklyn Chow entered the room to tell us this wasn't on her schedule but she will "fit us in". She didn't review my dogs chart, didn't sound compassionate at all or let us ask any questions, no apologies but moved us to another room after being in room 3 for 2.5 hours, this room was supposed to be the "grieving room" and more comfortable. Ok, maybe but still a blanket on the floor and a 2 seater couch, bright fluorescent lights and loud noises from the back door where the vet techs work. Immediately she told me she would not come into the room and would have to work from the door, with the door open if I didn't put on my mask. The last thing I wanted my dog to see was my covered face..plus she accused me of having Covid because my throat was hoarse and my nose was running, well do you think that could be contributed to me crying for 3 days about my dog, and also, my boyfriends father passed the day before, so lots of emotions going on,? No, I had cover and she wouldn't perform the procedure without me putting on my mask, otherwise it would be done with a long hose from the hallway, with loud noises, people running back and forth and bright lights, like that is supposed to put my dog to ease? or us? I put my mask on, asked her to come into the room and shut the lights off and close the door, I really should have run... taken my dog and run.. the next minutes were awful, she administered the first fluid, and I couldn't stop crying once her head laid down, she told me I had 2 - 7 minutes... 2-7 minutes for what? what did that mean? This woman showed no compassion, no empathy, no apologies.. just "go out the back door" and we will bring your dog in a bag! WTF! what type of bag? a garbage bag? that is how we felt.. I wish I had run out the door and taken my sweet baby with me..I wish I had let her die at home, where she wasn't just treated like a credit card transaction, which oh, by the way, they came in with the debit machine prior to the procedure to make me "pay up front". That was the most tasteless act of human unkindness I have ever witnessed.. Do not take your pets here.. I am haunted by the whole experience and blaming myself for not running out the door! Plus this place charges so much more money than any other vet around.. you and your pet are nothing but transactions, and they are running a heartless business!

Thursday the 31st, my son took him in and was told he had a urine blockage and the x-ray showed he had a very swollen bladder so they would need to put in a catheter to unblock him. My son came home let me know and I went to work. I got home at 9pm our cat Goose laying there unable to lift his head. I was upset and asked why he wasn't kept and my son told me the vet said he couldn't keep him overnight as they were closing for the long weekend. Told him to take him home and flip him over every 30mins. He said to make sure his catheter was draining and if not he gave him a syringe to flush it. He said to massage his bladder to help it drain and I quote "bring him back Tuesday if he's still alive to get the catheter out". My son stayed up with him all night until 7am and I took over until I went to work. Friday Aug 1st I got home from work to find out my son had to rush Goose to the Emergency Animal Hospital. They could not understand why he wasn't referred to them for overnight, or why he was sent home in his condition with a catheter. They tried to help but after a while he had to be put to sleep. This business sent my son home with his pet whom was suffering so that he could watch him die as he tried to help him. Again, charged him $728.00 so he could watch his only pet suffer in pain.

First, let me say that the Vet, Martyn, is a wonderful, knowledgeable and seasoned Vet who not only offers care but is a surgeon himself. His kindness to us over the years will ALWAYS be appreciated. But, what NEEDS to be said is the horrific ending of our long standing relationship due to the inhumane treatment to both us by his partner/wife assistant "LORIE' who handles all the calls and appointments. We brought our 9-year old dog to be examined on Oct. 21 2025, as we suspected he had a small stroke the evening before. After examination by Dr. Martyn Potter, he said dog was fine; just noticed a heart murmur and said he would require teeth cleaning soon. We left the clinic. A few hours later, rushed back and our dog was dying in my husband's arms in the waiting room. Vet rushed to see him again, tried oxygen, but sadly, he died. Two days later, we had to call Vet's partner, Lorie, to book an appointment for our elderly cat of 16 years old. She said come for 2 PM. We drove over one hour to make the appointment and when we arrived the vet clinic was locked/closed. We called the vet's pager and he was kind of enough to tell us to come into the clinic via another non-public entrance. (as he was all alone doing surgeries). When I walked into the alternate entrance, I was horrified to see my beloved dead dog's body bag with his name on it sitting outside on top of a rusted freezer with his name on it. I broke down and cried as I could not walk past the bag without praying for my little boy who was left like that with large black garbage bags literally next to him. The entrance was very cluttered and not clean. We waited for Vet to finish his surgery then he examined my cat. Dr. Potter has been caring for my elderly cat for many years and we have been grateful for the surgeries & his generosity in waiting for our payments. But, when he died all alone in a cage during the night at the clinic (only 2 days after my dog's death), needless to say, we were heart broken. My husband had already been driving on his way down to the clinic, when he got the text news that the cat had passed away my senior husband of 73 yrs old, had to pull over to the side of the road for 20 minutes to cry. When he contained himself and finally arrived at the clinic, the Vet's partner, Lorie started yelling at him at the door, saying she doesn't want anything to do with myself and/or my husband anymore! She raised her hands into the air and told my husband, "take your dead animals out of our clinic and take them home"!! My husband was in shock. Lorie ran to the back of the clinic to get Dr. Potter to step in (as she claimed my husband was yelling at her). Dr. Potter told everyone to calm down and proceeded to help with documentation required for the cremation of our two pets. When my husband was trying to choose a cremation urn, she slammed the urn on the counter and said..."whatever". I am DISGUSTED with Lorie and her INHUMANE uncompassionate and BRUTAL emotional treatment. We didn't deserve this at a time when we were CRUSHED. No one should EVER kick a man when he is down. ****A message to Lorie**** There's something wrong with you! You don't have to worry, we would NEVER come back to your clinic anyway. It's not organized, no staff or team to help, Lorie has ZERO technical AND/OR Accounting skills. She slams other vet clinics in the area, (her quote), "Most of them are MARS chocolate bars organizations. We keep prices low because we don't have 5 vets and lots of techs running around". Well, Lorie, news flash, you need a team to help your wonderful Dr. Martyn Potter. He can't do everything all by himself. He deserves better.

My regular vet advised me to go to TEVH immediately where my cat was diagnosed with Vestibular disease, an inner ear issue. I was reassured that he should improve in a couple of weeks. He was prescribed ear drops to clear up some ear bacteria and yeast. Once home he seemed to improved marginally but then stopped eating, had nasal discharge and was lethargic. After several return visits he was admitted on Saturday May 9, it was recommended that a CT scan of the head, thorax and abdomen be done. Results indicated that he had an inner ear blockage and infection that needed surgery. He was to remain in hospital on a nasal feeding tube until surgery for a Bulla Osteotomy - Ventral could occur. I visited him every day. He was very quiet but alert on the days I saw him prior to surgery. On May 13 surgery went well, lots of material (gunk) had been removed from his ear. I was told a steroid for inflammation had been given and he should be feeling better soon. During surgery an esophageal feeding tube was placed so that he could receive medication and food while recovering until he began eating on his own. Cornish Rex cats do not have a lot of body fat and are very sensitive to anesthesia. This is common knowledge regarding the breed and I have been told about this by previous vets and by breeders. Rexs need to be kept warm. Thursday morning I expected to hear about discharge details. Instead I heard that he was still a little slow to come around from surgery and they would like to keep him for another day. Lots of reassurance he was doing well and that I could come and visit him until his discharge on Friday. At Thursdays visit he appeared heavily sedated and not very responsive. The tech said they had him on a warning blanket and he looked like he shivered at one point. I noticed that his face was quite dirty and he had matter around his mouth and dried urine on his back legs that I tried to clean off. During the visit he coughed twice, a very deep phlegmy wet cough that was not reassuring at all. Thursday evening I asked the vet if he was getting pneumonia because he coughed twice and sounded really awful. I heard no that this was from the anaesthetic and he was actually sounding better. I was told his lungs were X-rayed and there was no sign of pneumonia. I called later that evening after 9 p.m. to get an update and heard that Jerry was doing great, they were weaning him off supplemental oxygen and he had peed twice. Friday morning when I saw TVEH number come up as a call at 10:30 a.m. I thought.... good, I can go and pick him up. Instead the vet calling identified himself as a critical care vet. He said that Jerry had double pneumonia and sepsis and that I should come right away. He was in septic shock when I arrived and I was told his body temperature and heart rate were low. He was under a heating blanket and non responsive. Later that day instead of bringing him home as planned I had to euthanized him. After asking I learned that his inner ear infection was positive for E. coli bacteria. I am aware that E-coli bacteria can be resistant to standard and generally prescribed antibiotics and can require different and more aggressive antibiotics. How does a cat go from nothing but positive reports to pneumonia and sepsis in such a short period of time? Even after having asked about the possibility of pneumonia the night before. I don't believe that he was being monitored as closely as he should have been. I am left with a feeling that those entrusted with his care were not paying attention. Throughout the entire process I was also left feeling like TVEH was more concerned that the escalating bill for his care was paid up and current, which it was. In future I would have to think long and hard about returning to TEVH. There are alternatives and other available emergency hospitals in the GTA. Surgery always comes with risks. Those risks were mitigated by receiving reassuring and positive reports at every contact and then the worst possible thing occurs, it doesn't make sense and doesn't fit. My advice to anyone reading this review is if time allows seek an alternative opinion. Check out other emergency care hospitals because they exist. Ask that less intrusive options be tried first. I trusted my cat's care to TEVH and I am left feeling that they let us both down. He paid for it with his life.

This was the closest emergency hospital to us. I rang to make sure that they would be able to take my pet. It was really hard to get a hold of them on the phone, presumably because it was so busy. They did a very quick intake on who to expect - breed of dog, name, my name, etc. Since it's during Covid, when I showed up they told me to call. When they were ready for me I brought my dog into the lobby for a quick check from the vet tech. After that she was brought into the back to wait for a doctor to see her. We were asked to wait in the car while this happened. All of the remaining consultations would be done via phone except for pick up/drop off of dog. We were probably in the car for around 2 hours without much news. Afterwards we were told that they did some sort of scan and they were able to identify some sort of mass on her. Unfortunately we found out that an ultrasound wouldn't be possible until Monday which is when their radiologist comes in. They offered to keep her overnight for observation but we really just wanted her home with us. This visit of the scan, consultation, drugs administered, and take home drugs came out to around $600. This really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My dog's annual checkup is a little less than this and since this is an emergency visit, not the worst. We did come back for an ultrasound and it was kind of the same in terms of wait. Super long wait! Probably felt extra long because we were anxious to find out how the pup was. The results of the ultrasound were pretty conclusive. We consulted with our own family vet and their recommendations were the same as the emergency vet that we spoke to as well. The emergency vet that we talked to was very patient on the phone and spoke about my dog like she was a family member of mine. It was pretty reassuring in a very frightening situation. I honestly think that they did a good job with the treatment of my dog. They did their due diligence and weren't pushy with any procedures or recommendations.

Dr. Kevin Dewey gave us a consultation and did blood work that he suggested, a cost of ($420.00) The result after the blood came back did show low white blood cell platelets that he said was ok ,sent him home and said if it this happens more often bring him back. Our dog had another seizure about two weeks later, so we decided to have a second opinion. Another Doctor that we went to did the same blood work which came back with the same results as Dr. Dewey. This doctor reviewed Dr. Dewey's blood test as well and said there is something very wrong with your dog and we should do a parasite test. We of course agreed and said please go ahead, the blood test came back positive for parasites and now he is taking medication and showing great results of it working. He will be taking this medication for one month to get rid of the parasites. We asked Dr. Dewey why he didn't tell us that there was a problem that he saw and look further into it after the test showing the low white blood cell platelets at the same time it came back. He said that his machine may have not worked properly and this may be why the white blood platelets were low. He said he also looked under a microscope and thought everything was fine. When we returned and questioned him, asked why he didn't suggest doing another test at that moment after seeing something was not normal. His answer was because he didn't want to charge us more money to look further. I said this is not his job to make that decision without giving us the choice first. When asking questions further he looked like he was hiding his mistakes in medical terms about other things that could happen so it would not look like he made that wrong decision, instead of being accountable for the the decision he made. I want others to hear our experience with Dr. Dewey so they are aware with their pets with the experience we had.. Our pet means the world to us and am so glad we went to see another Doctor that saved our pets life.
