We have recently moved our equipment out of HE's FMT2 facility and into the PhoenixNAP, but we would never have done this unless we could keep HE as our transit provider - which we did. The transition was smooth (had one small hiccup - but if we didn't I'd almost be afraid), and services are working beautifully at the new facility. Our choice to move was not because of HE, but we have always wanted to keep our equipment close to home, and now we had the opportunity to do it once our contract was up for our colo space. On Dec. 1st, 2020 there was an electrical service interruption. We've been asking for information so we could proceed to resolve the effects on our cabinets. H.E. refused to give us some basic information that could have saved countless hours and resources. Since the incident, I have been requesting future issues be handled better and to have known facts provided sooner. I have been told repeatedly that management would not provide some basic info, like if they are even dispatching a tech to investigate issues. Maybe H.E. thinks I am asking for money but I am NOT, I am asking for better communication and a process for handling issues like this. Tell me you have a tech investigating the UPS power interruption so I dont have to have my tech head to the DC to troubleshoot. I see the same issues from 14 years ago occurring and obviously the communication has not improved. Stop trying to CYA and be straight with your customers. I would love to change this review and it is completely within H.E.'s power to salvage this situation by responding and communicating in a prompt manner. I am not asking for money. If I could give them -5 stars I would do so. They are the sleaziest and most unethical businesses you can deal with. They give you a contract for 12 months and then in their tons of legalese hide an auto renewal annual contract deep. At the time of auto-renewal they do not inform you or even send you a courtesy email. If you want to hire an expensive lawyer to read their legal paperwork then they are the company for you. For small startups who want to reduce the legal charges just run away as far as possible. I will lodge a complaint in the consumer bureau against them I would highly recommend other people do the same, businesses like these should not exist. read more

Hurricane Electric is the McDonald's of data centers. You walk in and there is one floor, with row upon row upon row upon row of blue cabinets. When you sign up, you get one of these blue cabinets to yourself, at a fairly competitive price, and you can move in pretty quick. The grungy underpaid staff are plentiful and mostly friendly and useful. If you meet one you like, you can hire them away at a discount. The best part of Hurricane Electric is the Fry's just down the street, which makes your deployment easier. The worst part of Hurricane Electric is that they would not, under any circumstances, sell us any power beyond 15A. The only accomodation would be to buy a second cabinet at full price. Then when you try to move to a more suitable data center, you have to argue with them because their standard contract has a one-year commitment. Which reminds me, the sales person I dealt with was only marginally competent. We nearly went with Evocative in Emeryville because the HE sales person seemed mostly disinterested in communicating with us, and had a habit of sending quotes as Excel spreadsheets, which kinda slows things down when your customers tend to be Unix users. -d read more

For two years my company leased a full rack at he.net's Fremont 2 facility. A lot of what they do has been excellent, but as anyone in business knows it's when you really need something that the service matters most and that is where he.net really let me down. Several weeks ago some power equipment failed at the he.net Fremont II facility. I spent the better part of a weekend cleaning up the mess with lots of other not too happy folks. Not only did they not apologize for the issue, they were very slow to respond and eventually cited legalese in their contract. Needless to say I am no longer a he.net customer, and sadly I write this review because up to this point they had been a very good service provider with minimal issues. Shame on them for not stepping up when it mattered most. Reading at least one of the other reviews leads me to believe that he.net is strict when it comes to problems. If you can live with that, it's probably not a bad place to go. If you cannot I recommend you look elsewhere. I like companies that do the right thing when they screw up and cause you grief. Well, needless to say I am shocked. I was in the datacenter and almost all of the PDU's were in an Alarm state. There's not much to say here except WTF? Right? Whatever lies that HE sent out about your supposedly "fixed" power issue was a complete falsehood. The video proves it -- more than 1/2 of the PDU's in alarm state on the main floor. Embarrassing. Chronic issues. I would even say criminal representation. That said, I am keen on getting my money back from you guys -- every last cent. If I have to do that through the courts, let me know. Also, you can consider our contract terminated due to your company's complete and utter fraud in the services rendered. Please let me know when I can get my refund. Prior to 2010 I would have given these guys a spankingly awesome review. However, their support started to slip, and then..... sugar.he.net crashed. We were not notified of the crash. We were not notified that the restore of the data was full of holes and dated files. HE never stepped up. We moved our web site elsewhere but our email is still there. Today (4/19/2011) marks the second day of problems with the new server we're on (golf.he.net) and the server has been unavailable from at least 8 am till 1:35 pm (when this is being written). No ETA is available. Once upon a time I recommended these cats unreservedly. Now - save your frustration. Your business is worth more than the service they're currently able to provide. Beware hosting any mission critical applications here. The Fremont II facility has had multiple outages over even just the last 12 months. Power issues have occurred twice, and the latest issue is related to some networking equipment. If you are expecting over 99.0% uptime, look elsewhere. read more

The Service here is Good generally. everyone is friendly and for the price is basically the best one you can find around bay area that has 24 hours coverage. HOWEVER, if they fail NO BODY in the world would talk to you what the heck is going on. They had 3 major power interruptions in the last 3 years, and power just went on and off; and we lost few servers. Problem is that when you inquire them What Happened, they say, They don't know...they are investigating...they can't comment..WHAT? I need to konw if it was power failure or network failure or what happeend to konw what to do. I talked to other customers and they ahve the same complaint too. The staff are trained to NOT SAY ANYTHING when something goes wrong. that makes it really frustrating. Later I called the billing to see if i can get partial refund of monthly fee because they caused the interruption and caused my server go die...You know how much they refunded me? $15 .... i'm paying couple thousands dollars every month and got refund of $15 ! read more

A month ago I would have given them 4 stars, but since last week I wouldn't use them again. The good: Sales person was always nice (until the bad), there were tools available for use at the colo, and support was always very responsive when I found peering issues. The bad: racks are small, but more importantly, some malicious activity happened with our server causing bandwidth usage to skyrocket. They wouldn't waive any of the costs. Other colo's I have worked with have helped as long as you're responsible and proactive. Hurricane gave us the cold shoulder and said, sorry, "you're responsible for your bandwidth usage." Update 8/2011 - I'll bump them to two stars. No major issues lately. The biggest issues I've had in the past few years is when something goes wrong like power outage, DoS, or whatever -- I never hear anything about it until I ask. For all I know they are fixing the data-center with duct tape and zip ties. Update 8/30/2012 - I'll bump them to three stars. I logged in the other day and saw the server uptime was over two years. I guess they probably figured out the power problems by now. They still don't have a way to find out whats going on at the datacenter if all hell breaks loose. I've been with Hurricane Electric for over 17 years. A year ago I switched my email to another provider. The plan was to add my new email to HE. I was told I couldn't use both. I never added the new email and called to close the account. I've been billed for the past 13 months with no email on their server. I asked for some reimbursement but was denied. If it had been explained to me a year ago I needed to close the account in writing I would have done so. Not a good way to treat long time customers. read more

I am not technically savvy about email and such. My website and webmail are on Hurricane Electric's "parrot" server. For the 1st 2yrs +, I had very few issues. I have been having issues for the past 2 mos or so accessing my email: - unable to login - unable to get to login page - "connection dropped by imap server" - unable to access or extreme delays in accessing email folders, sending email, viewing emails etc etc The problems occcur from home and my office which are in separate towns. I have tried typing in my email access rather than relying on my cache. Usual explanations are heavy load by another user and / or high traffic time. The service representatives at Hurricane are always cordial and they answer the phone very quickly. Nevertheless, if I had known about these problems in advance, I would have avoided their services. I think I pay $10-20 / mo, but I would be happy to pay more for more reliable service. I am now investigating the pro's / cons of moving my service. read more

So far so good. I moved in on a Sunday (4/10) and had a little misconfiguration issue on the HE side. The helpdesk staff that was on duty, couldn't fix the issue. They actually called an engineer on Sunday night at 5pm and the issue was resolved within minutes. The only time I have ever witnessed such great customer service was from my site Cetrus.
