When I'm craving mala sichuan food and don't want to drive all the way to Chinatown, Hu's is where I would go! Although the price has gone up a bit in the few years that I've been going, their portion sizes are pretty decent. The staff speak both English and Chinese too! Hu's Cooking is certainly a convenient and battle-tested Chinese (predominantly Sichuan, as the whole restaurant has the aroma of peppercorn) restaurant inside the loop. As a Montrose resident, the prospect of driving out to Chinatown every time I want quality Chinese food is just not on the table, and Hu's Cooking solves that issue entirely. I recently came here with a couple friends which allowed us to order family style, and we ordered the Hakka Special, Sauteed Chicken with Ratton Pepper (3 spicy signs!), and the classic Stir-Fried String Beans. The Hakka Special is a dish made with bean curd, squid, pork belly, and celery -- very similar in taste to a shredded pork with bean curd dish, just with the additional squid. Hu's Cooking makes this one with particular attentiveness that no one flavor (including spice) overpowers the entire dish. The Sauteed Chicken with Ratton Pepper featured a classic Sichuan spice. Although each bite was not spicy, the flavor compounds with each bite of the chicken and pepper combination. It worked well with the other dishes in our lineup, especially the Stir-Fried String Beans. Overall, I would say that Hu's Cooking is a solid Chinese restaurant within the loop, especially if you are a fan of Sichuan flavors. My only (small) gripe is with the recent pricing which has seen up to $20 for some dishes during dinner time. That being said, the lunch specials which come with one entree and fried rice might be more worth it if one is looking for a low cost Chinese meal! read more

Hot & Sour Soup (5/5): Available as individual or sharing portions. I have tasted many hot & sour soups in my life and they're definitely one of the best. It's fresh, not lukewarm and well-spiced. No overbearing amount of veggies either! General Tso's Chicken (4.8/5): One of the most delicious General Tso's sauce I've had. It is different from many others that taste like from the frozen aisle of a grocery store. I love when I get the bites of crispiness, but I wish it was more consistent with each bite (hence the -0.2), BUT I love that it's not over breaded so +++ -- may sound a bit contradictory lol. The safest, yet delicious option. Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce (5/5): Who doesn't like garlic sauce? Garlic is LOVE. Hehe, love this dish. It is well balanced with some veggies (peppers, bamboo shoot, celery). Stir Fried String Beans (5/5): A very simple dish to lighten up any heavy main courses that has mostly meat. Has a nice crisp to it with a nice wok flavor. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (5/5): Again... garlic sauce is love lol. With hints of ginger lingering the dish, this eggplant recipe is one of my favorite Chinese dishes that has a lot of depth for such a simple dish. Whenever I go to any Chinese restaurant, I try to opt for this dish, and my friends are always like "ew, why? Eggplants are disgusting". Absolutely my top 3 in houston. Wonderful food and service. The lunch combo is so good and the vegetarian meals are amazing!

The first thing I noticed on my first visit here was the parking was full. After parking along the street, I waited outside with our family for a table for 9. Within 12 minutes they had prepared a perfect table for us, one that handily included a center lazy Susan turntable. We were immediately greeted and had our drink order shortly thereafter. Our meals came promptly and we were able to enjoy hot, fresh and delicious dishes with plenty to share. This is when we discovered the advantage of the center turntable. I highly recommend this restaurant, and if parking seems difficult at first, hang out in your car briefly as somebody will likely be leaving soon after picking up a to-go order. read more

Hu's cooking is latest addition to my "best thing I ever ate" list. I began writing this review in my head mid-meal -- I'm notorious for sitting on a review for weeks or months, and although others have already raved, I have to tell the yelp world my take on this amazing place offering Szechuan and Tawainese realness. I've been dying to try Hu's since they're always a recommendation from friends, colleagues near TMC and Rice. I was kinda torn on my cravings, wanting hot pot but also dim sum and didn't have the time or crew for either so I went to Hu's early in the afternoon on a Saturday. My only mistake was solo dining -- with friends I could enjoy more of the menu in one sitting. I won't make that mistake again, unless it's a quick midweek lunch or takeout! I still ordered a couple items to satisfy my heart's desires and to my surprise there was a dim sum menu!! I got a HUGE helping on braised beef noodle soup, the pictures don't do the size justice. I also got some shrimp sui mai and bbq pork buns. The sichuan peppercorns and the flavor of the braised beef was the kinda comforting meal you pray for. The pork buns were like little clouds and filled graciously, the shu mai was so flavorful, no sauces were needed. All three Hu's dishes were better than any I've had elsewhere from ATL to LA. Great portion with great flavors! If you're a fan of Szechuan or just spicy food in general, this place is great for that. The portions here are HUGE and almost each dish comes with a pot of rice on the side. I came here with my boyfriend and we got 3 dishes. It was honestly more than enough for us. First, the staff was super nice and super helpful with choices. Our server recommended I get the Kung Pao Chicken, and my wife ordered the Bell Pepper Beef. I literally, truthfully, could have stayed all day if these dishes would have been endless. That good? YES. Don't let the cramped parking keep you away. Don't let ANYTHING keep you away. I absolutely love this place, whenever I dine in with friends, they are quick with service and the food is always hot. However, a few times when they're really busy, I have noticed that the plates for some dishes are smaller than usual, but just as tasty. I absolutely love their eggplant in garlic sauce, and my partner loves their twice cooked pork. They give you unlimited rice with the entrees when you dine in, and everything is meant to be shared family style. The only bad thing about them is that every other time I order over the phone, something's wrong, either a wrong dish, or even once, completely forgetting to put my order in after they ended the call. It was more breading than chicken and it just made the entire thing unappetizing. My mother got a shrimp plate and she enjoyed it so I can give three stars for that. Yes, order everything. You're going to want to bring your friends with big appetites, and hope that they share. The menu looks intimidating- so many options BUT they are all amazing. Be sure to be ready and willing to step out of your comfort zone - because when you do, your mind will be blown. It was just 3 of us and clearly our eyes were bigger than our stomachs because we ordered enough for a large family. Luckily, the leftovers keep great. Here is my thought process for our menu. Woodear marinated mushrooms- strange texture with great flavor. Fried rice- can't go wrong. Duck- GET THE DUCK! Szechuan beef noodle soup- don't freak out when your mouth starts to tingle- that's normal. Wonton soup- nom nom nom. Dan Dan noodles- how have I never eaten these before. Hands down probably, my favorite Chinese restaurant in the loop or near the medical center. There is limited parking in the front but there's additional parking in the back but they are a bit tighter. It's always bustling inside but there are plenty of seating options. The service is always quick and efficient and it doesn't take that long for the food to arrive. Everything I've ordered so far was exceptional but if I had to highlight one thing I would be the fried spicy chicken. As someone who has a low spice tolerance, I am willing to suffer for this dish only. It is so flavorful and crispy with each bite I am addicted. I took my son on a field trip with his 5th grade class but he just wanted to hang out with his friends for a bit and then go eat and visit some local comic book shops in Houston. I asked what he wasn't and he said Chinese food. There are so many good options for Asian cuisine in the Houston area. Of course I wanted to see what was on Yelp and I found Hu's. Wasn't too far from downtown Houston (we were at the Aquarium) and it had so many reviews at almost 5 stars. He was excited and so was I! It's a small parking lot in front of a small line of stores, maybe 2/3 others? Still it was about 2pm and so there was no lunch crowd. Found a spot (there's some street parking as well) and walked inside. They said sit anywhere so we chose a booth by the front door. I normally don't like booths as they are restricting, but there was a lot of room in these booths. It was tricky getting in as it isn't a normal restaurant booth. It has arms on the end you must navigate in. They handed us a few different menus. So many choices. But it didn't take long. He wanted noodles with beef and shrimp. I wanted the hottest thing I could find. Most places have 2/3 chilis next to it and it is never really hot. I always ask for extra spicy and it's not hot enough. Let me tell you...I met my match here today!! It was . I lost the feeling in my tongue, I was crying and my nose was running. My tea tasted different, and my mouth was on fire! AND I FREAKING LOVED IT!!! I texted my wife and told her I finally met my match . You get some white rice before your meal. Nice touch. We also ordered shrimp fried egg rolls. I don't normally like sweet sauces but this was a good sauce. The tea was great, even when the heat altered my taste buds . The service was great and the food was fantastic!! I've been here several times, so I'm definitely overdue for a review. I stumbled across Hu's when my uncle was in town and wanted Chinese food. It had good reviews, and we've been looking for a good Chinese spot, so we decided to check it out. I've now been here 3 times and had take out once. You can see in my pics what all we've tried, but the MUST HAVE dishes include the chilled cucumbers, dandan noodles, beef fried noodles, and stir-fried green beans. I liked the mapo tofu the first time we ate it, but after the 3rd time, I've decided it has too much of a specific spice - cumin? dried red peppers? It's not too spicy. It's just kinda bitter, and after awhile... your taste buds are gone. Service here is great, and Mr Hu always comes out to talk to the customers. He usually gives my son these yummy gummy candy, but he didn't the last time. It's a little bit of a hike for us, but we'll be back! read more

Stopped in for pick up on a Saturday evening. Prior to ordering, I called in to ask about making modifications and ensure they can make the modification and the agreed and even stated to add the note when ordering online. The online order said 15 -20 minutes and during the 15 minute drive over, the food was ready. The food was hot when picked up and even when made it home still was steaming. the food came out correctly with the modification as well. I had the orange chicken and it had broccoli in it which was a nice addition. Tasted more authentic compared to other spots I have been to. We ordered dumplings but our waitress forgot to put in the order so that was a bummer we didn't get charged but I wanted to try it! The parking is not great so get there early to find parking in tune front or back or on the side street! Being a child of immigrant parents when I go to a ethnic restaurant I want to see if that culture eats at the establishment! So excellent - Chef Hu is a master of his craft! Every dish is perfectly seasoned and cooked. Sweet skinned duck is savory, sweet and delectable. The Combination Fried Rice is the best fried rice I have ever enjoyed, and I have tried hundreds of fried rice dishes. The Dan Dan Noodles are a simple pleasure, and the green beans and eggplant are an elegant and colorful vegetarian dish with plenty of garlic and ginger to complement the fresh veggies. The restaurant is amazingly busy with both dine in and take out customers, but the operation is very professionally run. The staff are courteous, well trained and friendly. I had wonton soup and my husband had hot and sour soup. I had pork with shiitake mushrooms and my husband had Mongolian beef. All of it was delicious! The service was prompt and courteous without being intrusive. We also bought a bottle of wine. Altogether, our meal was about $95 before tip.
