5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics. During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem. read more

My mom wanted steamed fish with ginger, scallions, and that light sweet soy sauce. Hu's Cooking delivered! When we ordered, they mentioned it'll take about 20 mins but it came out in 10. No complaints here since we were starving from an 8 hour road trip. The Dan Dan Noodles...I had high expectations but sadly this dish fell short. I recommend Hu's Cooking to use a bigger bowl and more sauce because it was difficult to mix the noodles and the sauce wasn't...saucing, unfortunately. I wish there was more flavor in this dish. The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. Look no further for authenticity, flavor, and complexity in Chinese cooking near the med center! Though we opted for more "simple" dishes during this experience, you can judge a place by if they can do their simple dishes well. The mapo tofu is one of the best we've had outside of Bellaire with spicy, savory, numbing, and warmth that you expect from a good mapo tofu. Crispy popcorn chicken is a classic that's spicy, lightly fried, and crisp. It has an authenticity that other places around can't replicate and makes you keep craving more. The portions are also appropriate for their price. Service is incredibly quick, and you can order as you go and receive your dish within 10-15 minutes, regardless of how busy they are. As for the ambiance, it's loud, it's hectic, and it's simple... maybe a stretch, but makes me feel like I'm eating at a mom and pop shop in the heart of China. I've been a happy patron of Hu's Cooking ever since they opened the year before the pandemic, but because of their instant success and local renown from their excellent eats, speedy service, busy-but-not-crowded vibes (see: their 1000+ Yelp reviews) I've never felt the need to drop a review of my own - until just this week. On my most recent visit we ordered mapo tofu with pork intestines off the specials menu - a hybrid of two of my favorite Sichuan-style dishes. The blend of bouncy, savory morsels amidst tender, saucy tofu was at once revolutionary and so obvious; why hadn't I yet seen this at any other restaurant? And sure, innards may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's important for you to know that none of my past orders from the 50+ item menu have ever failed me, whether enjoyed in the restaurant or at home. Maybe you'd prefer the aromatic, classic, perfectly balanced three-cup chicken? Or the sweet-skinned duck, glazed so delicately that specks of sugar crystal threaten to jump off onto the plate as you pick up a juicy slice with your chopsticks? And if you're vegetarian, might you consider the punchy garlic eggplant or the wok-kissed string beans? I could go on. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself, though I'd recommend parallel parking on the neighborhood streets behind the restaurant rather than the rocky parking lot, to save you some trouble. If I lived closer to this restaurant, it would be my go to Chinese place. Service is efficient and friendly. Food is solid. They have a lunch special that is around $13 and comes with the main dish, fried rice, bok choy, hot and sour soup, and two small spring rolls. Good deal and really quick service. I usually get the stir fried green beans, general tso chicken, Mongolian beef, spicy fried chicken bites, and hot and sour soup. This place is usually packed. I've long heard that Hu's Cooking is the place to go for quality Chinese food in the inner loop, and my first visit there last weekend met all expectations. The food was well plated and good portioned, which matched the premium menu prices in comparison to other Chinese restaurants. We ordered three dishes for two people, and it made for a good balanced meal. The spicy chicken was a surprising twist of Sichuan flavors with popcorn chicken like texture. Seeing that the menu featured Sichuan spices and multiple peppers, I was initially worried that the spice levels might go over my tolerance, but luckily the dishes were made less mild than the typical Sichuan restaurants to cater to the diverse customer base in inner loop. Highly recommend Hu's Cooking for anyone new to Sichuan cuisine to ease into the flavors. The reason for the one star short of five is due to the limited parking space and the ceiling in the restaurant showing signs of aging (i.e. visible insulation and missing covers). Overall, I found dining at Hu's Cooking to be a pleasant experience. The service was great, and the staff speak both Chinese and English fluently. We outstayed our meal up till the time they closed for the afternoon, and the servers still respected our space until we finished our meal and conversations and naturally got up to leave. Man the food here is cravable! You hope to have leftovers just so you can have some the next day but it's so good that you can stop eating. The layers of flavor are so beautiful it's legit like a symphony, no matter how many bites you take you really can distinctly taste the love that goes into the food. Service is pretty fast but they have been packed everytime I go. Not sure if it's the owner or manager that is there daily but he is super friendly and funny and literally checks in on every table. The tables are kind of packed in so it's not a lot of room which I'm ok with but that's not for everyone. If you haven't gone out of your way to try Hu's it's worth the detour. I came in with every intention of trying a dry pot (which I still really want), but in a moment of basic B**** brilliance, I pivoted to the spicy General Tso's--and wow, no regrets. I also grabbed a Basque cheesecake, though I haven't touched it yet because the General Tso's completely filled me up. (Dessert review pending--if I don't inhale it in the middle of the night.) The dining area looks like a great spot to post up for a full meal, especially when I come back to finally get that dry pot. Will definitely be coming back here to try the lunch/dinner dim sum menu. We got the lunch special, which was fried rice with an egg roll and some soup and your choice of the meat to go with it for $14. I got the Kung Pao chicken, and it was soooo soft and moist. The sauce on it was yummy, and the bok choy was also delicious. The fried rice was a little dry and could have had more flavor by itself, but with the meat it was good. The cucumber chili salad was a really well-balanced dish because it was super fresh against the hot entree and soup we were having. Considering the portion size they gave, this was a steal! The service has always been pleasant and timely, while the interior is spacious and the tables have plenty of room for the generous portions. I also appreciate the extra parking in the back of the building. The Sichuan style food is spectacular. I love the eggplant, the twice cooked pork, the fish curry and the tofu! Everything is flavorful, with a pleasant kick of spice. The pork was tender and the texture was perfect. Paired with the white rice, everything was delicious. However, you can ask for the spice level to be adjusted to your preferences. Our server was extremely pleasant and attentive. The quality and the price of the items on their menu are the best I've had so far, especially for take out food since getting back in town. Not only are they well staffed, but there is an abundance of food as well. Sometimes, we can't make it down to China town so this was a solid capture and their food tastes better the next day also. A group of us decided to congregate here for a chinese food feast during early September. I'm always down to explore the chinese food scene in Houston. I was surprised learning this was in the West University section as most of my favorite chinese eats are in the Bellaire/Sugarland/Katy Chinatown areas. Don't let the location fool you as this was some dope chinese eats. Items that we had ordered included the following: Kung Pao Chicken - 8/10 Sauteed Eggplant - 9/10 Walnut Shrimp - 10/10 Spicy Fish Bites - 10/10 Cumin Lamb - 10/10 Mapo Tofu - 8/10 Beef Noodles/lo mein - 8/10 Garlic Green Beans - 8/10 Beef in Garlic Sauce (w/ Bao) - 10/10 Wood-eared Mushrooms - 9/10 Everything was delicious with the walnut shrimp, fish bites, cumin lamb, and beef in garlic sauce being my favorite. The beef in garlic sauce comes with some bao pieces so you can fold the beef mixture in the bao and chow down. Spicy fish bites reminded me of the spicy chicken bites in fish format with the fish having nice texture. Cumin lamb has that spicy indianish/asian flavor that I crave. The other classic chinese dishes such as the kung pao chicken, walnut shrimp, eggplant, and mapo tofu were all tasty and either very good or better than most traditional chinese spots. And the wood-ear mushrooms are an underrated dish; the texture might take time to get used to but the flavor is there; dip it in some chili oil for some spectacular tastiness! After enjoying a local boat and car show we had walked up a great hunger with my friend. After looking up great spots to go eat later, Hu's cooking popped up. And what a great pop up suggestion it was. The Ambiance is very casual, seemed to be fast Pace otherwise. But there was nothing but fast service and great food being delved out. I overestimated my Hunger and ended up taking lots of leftovers home. I definitely was not sad about that. The food was fresh and good, such a variation of it that anyone can come and be picky. It's a great spot to come and hang out with your friends, and have a great conversation. The place was loud but in a good way. Parking up front is rough so you may have to find street parking or park in the rear of the building. Definitely a Hidden Gem!! I had a decent experience here. Although some of my usual Sichuan favorites didn't impress me at this restaurant, others tasted satisfactory or better. - Spicy fish bites: my favorite out of the 5 dishes my group ordered. Surprisingly, I've never noticed if Sichuan restaurants typically offer this on the menu despite having visited many of them. They look very similar to fried chicken cubes but offer a softer texture. 5/5. - Poached fish in chili oil: fell short of my expectations. Maybe a first timer could still enjoy it, but it tasted far too mushy and lacking in flavor for my approval. 2/5. - Shredded pork in garlic sauce: decent. I appreciated how much pork they added relative to the other ingredients. 4/5. - Mapo tofu: nothing spectacular in terms of flavor, but still enjoyable. A little too much sauce for my liking. 3/5. - Eggplants in garlic sauce: they did a great job with one. I'm not the biggest fan of eggplant but their sauce made it easy to eat. 4/5. Hopefully my visit simply occurred on an off day. The food probably scored a 3 or 3.5 star rating by itself, but I bumped it to 4 stars for exceptional service. We forgot to request no pork in the mapo tofu for our pescatarian friend, but our server offered a replacement after the original had already been made. He dropped by often to refill our waters and did not rush us out even though we chatted for another 10-15 minutes after signing the check. My boyfriend wanted to get out Hu's as he had just moved into a neighborhood and wanted to get some authentic Chinese food. Parking is very limited in the front of the restaurant and there is a lot behind the building although it's slightly more unkept with some potholes. We came around 5:45 pm on a Friday and it was already hustlin' and bustlin' with about 70% of the restaurant already full. The staff is very quick and efficient in how they greet you and take your order. The table to our left was sat shortly after us and when the waiter came to their table, they had 2 pots of rice in their hand and quickly put one on the corner of our table without really saying anything or looking at us and giving the other one to our neighbors. I thought they just temporarily put the rice there because they didn't have enough room to hold it in their hands before moving on. Then upon turning around and looking at us for a few seconds, the staff asked "You don't want the rice?" I stared at her confused and was like "Is that for us?" When she said yes, we took it but it was... a strange interaction. What we ordered: - Braised beef noodle soup - the flavor was delicious although super spicy due to the layer of chili oil and the meat was extremely tender but was unimpressed by the noodles (didn't have the chewiness and springiness expected, was just like spaghetti noodles..) - Dan Dan noodles - came packed into such a small bowl that it was impossible to mix everything without spilling it all over the table and when I asked for a bigger bowl to transfer it to, I felt like I got some attitude from the server with my request (was a little off putting to tell you the truth).. also wish it came with more pork as there was so little and had the same qualms about the noodles as above but flavor was as expected for Dan Dan noodles - Scallion pancake - pretty small serving size but quite tasty - Pan fried pork dumplings - a little disappointed in how the dumplings weren't very crispy Overall, I wasn't blown away by our experience here but maybe we just didn't try the right things that Hu's Cooking is known for so I would be willing to give it another go. read more

We came as a group of 4 on a Friday night around 6:15 and were sat pretty quickly. I guess ~6PM is on the earlier side of things but still nice to not have to wait. Service overall was great but they definitely did not want us to stay and chat after out meal (they started bussing the table and it felt a bit pushy, but also it was a Friday night and getting into the dinner rush so understandable). This is a Chinese restaurant with mostly Western/Sichuan style dishes. They have a ton of the staples like Mapo tofu, dry pots, and a variety of mala dishes to give your mouth that wonderful numbing sensation. I got the woodear mushroom appetizer, house tofu, and salted egg tofu. The woodear mushrooms were good but I was expecting more of the sichuan chili oil and garlic flavor and it was more just vinegar. The house tofu and salted egg tofu were good though. I wish the salted egg tofu had more of a salted egg punch (like my favorite back in Columbus) but it was decent. Was hoping for bone in dark chicken meat like drums or wings, or unbattered thighs, but it was made popcorn chicken style. They did use a decent amount of basil and the flavor was good, just wanted more meaty pieces of chicken rather than airy fried pieces. Let me start by saying sichuan cuisine is one of my favorite genres, and I have eaten at many sichuan restaurants in Houston. I ordered the lunch special that had spicy fried chicken bites which came with fried rice, hot and sour soup and 2 egg rolls. The chicken had a nice crispy batter and was cooked well, however there was not much spice or numbing component to the dish. The Dan Dan noodles were very tasty, and almost as good as the noodles from Mala Sichuan, but the noodles were slightly overcooked in my opinion. This dish also was lacking in spice/numbing quality. The poached fish filets in hot chili oil is a dish that I always order at Sichuan restaurants. I like how this dish was made with flounder, and the fish was cooked to perfection. The sauce was much thinner than what I'm used to having and noticeable lacking salt and numbing peppers. My diagnosis: overall the food was tasty, but if you are looking for a strong Sichuan peppercorn fix Hu's Cooking does not meet the mark. read more

Had family here from out of town who loves Chinese. After reading the reviews we decided to try Hu's. We ordered the cucumbers, spring rolls & small hot and sour soup for appetizers. We all thought the cucumbers were delicious, spring rolls were average and hot/sour soup was pretty good. We asked if the Thai curry shrimp could be made mild instead of spicy. At first the answer was no. Then the waitress mentioned she would have the kitchen to make is less spicy. The Thai curry shrimp arrived with a very bland watery sauce. Nut allergy warning: The kung Pao chicken, Dan Dan noodles, and perhaps some other dishes have peanuts, but we were fine with what we ordered. We had no issues getting a table for 6 at around 8:30PM on a Saturday evening. Food came out extremely quickly (less than 10 minutes for almost everything). However, our lotus root order was seemingly forgotten and that took longer, almost 30 minutes. For six people, we ordered: 2x Spicy Chicken (Fried): Two orders because our first vanished so quickly. The chicken is nicely crispy, surprisingly more airy than other Szechuan places I've had. The onion soaks up some peppercorn flavor too. Twice Cooked Pork (4/5): I thought the pork was a little tough on some pieces, but it was overall very good! Mapo Tofu (4.5/5): Excellent portions, great flavor Beef Slices in Golden Hot Bowl (4.5/5): Love the amount of vegetables it came with, very well balanced and goes great with rice. Sauteed Lotus Root (3.5/5): I thought this was a little too oily, but they nailed the texture and crispiness. Matcha Soy Milk Tea with Boba (2.5/5): The matcha flavor is quite nice, but the boba is nothing special. The texture is a little grainy. Overall, a solid option in the area. I'd come back if I was around again but I think I have other favorite Sichuan places in other parts of Houston. read more
