I wouldn't normally come here because I have regular doctors and health insurance but my registration was getting put on hold due to no record of an MMR vaccination. Because I'd much rather take a shot than have blood extracted to prove my immunization, I came here because they could update the school on the spot without me having to deal with sending verifications over mail or fax. You feel a little like cattle when you're here having to check in first then go through all the loops but being on campus I expected that. There were a ton of people to check patients in, so I didn't have to wait to check in nor did I have to wait longer than five minutes to get called back to take the shot. The woman who checked me in (and another lady who said to me upon entering "are you lost, little girl?") were a little condescending and treated me like I was born yesterday but again, also expected. Whatever. She did make me laugh at one point -- congratulating me on being the policy holder on my health insurance. Yay for independence? Everyone was friendly enough and the process was quick but I'm happy that I don't have to come here on a regular basis. read more

The Hall Health Travel Clinic is such a wonderful service that I had to write a review so others could find out about it. I just finished my consultation with the Co-Medical Director, Dr. Christopher Sanford, for an upcoming trip to East Africa. This place is a must for anyone traveling to a developing nation. The Travel Clinic provides pre-travel counseling, immunizations, and health advice for adults and children who are planning to travel out of the U.S. or Canada. The clinic is a Washington State Department of Health-designated center for yellow fever vaccine. Even though you can get the necessary immunizations from your own doctor having a consultation with one of the doctors at the Travel Clinic ensures that you will have the latest information about immunizations, diseases, and generally how to stay healthy while abroad. During my trip I plan to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, and Dr. Sanford had great advice about altitude sickness, as well as controlling mosquitoes and treating stomach discomfort - if you know what I mean. Plus I was able to get all of my prescriptions filled while I waited for my shots. It's a great resource even if it does cost a bit, but your insurance should cover the majority of it. And, the doctors are available via email if you should have any problems while you're traveling. read more

As far as student health centers go, this isn't terrible. They've remodeled in the last year or so, and I think that'll help a lot in making the process easier. I've had hit-and-miss experiences in the different areas: --Check-in: fast if you have an appointment, slow if you don't. I'd recommend calling ahead if you can. The seating area is much more comfortable now at least. One problem is a lack of parking, at least as far as I could tell at my two years at UW; it's kind of unfortunate that if you're sick, the bus is still your only way to get to the doctor if you don't have a parking pass. --Pharmacy: has been super slow ever since they got a new computer system. Calling or emailing in your refill info will save you hours of your time. --Women's clinic: always friendly and helpful, no complaints. --Primary care clinic: I've had one good experience here and one diagnosis that was so ridiculous it was laughable. --Physical therapy: Fantastic. Totally saved my shoulder for me. Highly recommended. Could be better, could be worse. If you're a UW student, you might as well come here because it's cheap/free, especially if you aren't a very complicated patient. read more

I started to choose four stars, but "Yay! I'm a fan" sounds like a bit much. It's somewhere in there, though. The pharmacy was super slow, but the nurse practitioner I saw for my annual lady bits exam was great--very friendly and helpful. I got an appointment with no trouble, and thankfully I'm a grad student so I can work with their otherwise inconvenient hours. Also, they offer a web interface for receiving test results and contacting your doctor/nurse practitioner, which is really convenient. They're remodeling right now so it's a little sketchy inside, but it will probably be pretty nice when they finish. read more

Most of the time nowadays, you will see yourself being treated by a nurse instead of a doctor. I'm not going to go into why, but I just want to state that as to say that you'll have to expect your experience to be different. Because if you do not, your opinions and ratings can be a bit skewed. I give four stars because this place has been there for me more than not and with some negative feelings, I still had more positive feelings. The nurse I went to go see when I felt sick was friendly and caring. Some people don't make you feel as comfortable, like a nurse with a bad day, or the student working at the check-in counter. Anyhow, if you need something, overall, and don't have much elsewhere to look, this is the place to go. About the nurses now taking over doctors shifts, they weren't trained as doctors so they won't do more than the simple standard procedures and just leave you with something that might make you happy before you leave. read more

We met with Anne Terry before our trip to Thailand. She was absolutely fabulous. Really thorough and took the time to explain everything. They also keep an eye on the latest from the CDC, stuff that's more current than you can figure out for yourself. We left with a nice packet of information specific to our destination and headed downstairs for our shots. One thing to know is that being thorough takes time, so be ready for a one hour appointment. If I could give negative stars I would since I had the worst clinics experience ever in my life at Hall Health. I visited Hall Health in July due to sore throat that leads to loss of voice. The black lady helping me check-in laughed at me that I had no voice and sang a song in front of me to show off her beautiful voice. She let me see a nurse without informing me of any charge. As a UW student who has insurance and rarely goes to clinics, I thought it was free. Later I got a bill of $250 for the visit as my insurance is not working when I am not taking classes. Clinics should have told me that when I checked in. Even if they don't know how much exactly will be charged for my case, a ball park figure can be given when patients checked in. My friend who is also a UW student was told that she would have to pay $200 for the visit and extra for any other lab work when she checked in. I didn't get informed of any of that. If I could know the charge upfront, I would choose not to see a doctor but rest at home because I could not afford the bill. I later contact billing department at Hall Health for possible discount and assistance. They are very cold -one lady whispered to her coworker and said "Oh my god" to complain that I am annoying. They are inpatient to listen to my story and pushed me to make a payment over the phone right away. I later filed a complaint with Hall Health, trying to reach out to Lavelle Brown, the manager of billing department at Hall Health. I was hoping that Lavelle could at least talk to me, but not only he did not talk to me, but his coworker later got back to me and insisted that the bill stands as is. I am a poor student who is willing to pay at my best for services I benefit from, but a $250 bill for the bad experience and wrong treatment is like a robbery. These guys know their stuff. They're great on the pre-travel work to get you prepared for anything you might encounter on the road, and they were able to kill band of parasites that came home with me as an unwanted souvenir from my last trip abroad. I had gone to my regular physician to get treated and ended up still having to go to the travel clinic afterwards. I should have gone there first. They're up on the most current issues of tropical medicine. Great staff. The only problem is getting to them if you're not a student or work at the UW campus. Getting there from downtown is a bit of a hike, but well worth it. read more

I agree with almost all of the other reviewers -- all of what they say is true. I'd give 2 1/2 stars if that were an option, but since there are a lot of great people there I'll go with the 3. The clinic as a whole has it's good points -- easy to get an appointment, many caring staff-members, ability to communicate with MDs by e-mail, comment/suggestion boxes all throughout the building. And yet, there are some deep and inexcusable flaws that have resulted in problems and inconvenience for some patients. Be very, very careful prior to telling them anything personal and realize that while there are some very professional and great things about the clinic, competence and sensitivity do not permeate the entire system. So even if you have a great relationship with one provider, other providers may treat you disrespectfully or incompetently. I'll leave it at that. I think students should be aware that if you receive care there for a long period of time, some questionable and rapid diagnostic conclusions may be drawn that may follow you around in their electronic charting system. One wrong or not well-thought out diagnosis and it sticks for good -- that really is a shame. And these questionable diagnoses seem to happen fairly often there. read more

Hall Health has gone through a major renovation recently which is great! Things have definitely improved as far as the facilities go EXCEPT for the area that needed it most, the pharmacy. The pharmacy, where they still hate life. Also, still no ultrasound facilities, which is understandable but would really be a nice upgrade. read more

I used to think Hall Health was okay -- until I got my own insurance and a real doctor, that is. HH used to be my go-to, because until recently, I was a UW student who lived close to campus, was stuck with UW's insurance plan, and had non-traditional work hours that allowed me to fit into its rigid schedule. If you take all those convenience factors away, you are left with an outdated, subpar clinic that is mostly staffed with nurses who treat you in claustrophobic exam rooms and force you to be tested for STDs. I'm not kidding -- I was tested for gonorrhea 4 times in 5 months once, didn't matter if I came in for an OB/GYN exam or complaining about sniffles. I never appreciated the persistent assumption that I'm a cesspool of genital bacteria. I also never appreciated their assumption that I was going to pay late, which is the impression I got after receiving multiple "overdue payment" notices BEFORE the due date of the initial bill. I will give Hall Health some fair credit: you can usually get an appointment same-day or within a couple of days at the most, which is a rarity with most other clinics and a welcome change from "wait a week or go to the ER". They also have an on-site pharmacy, so you can get your prescription filled right after your appointment, if you like. Still, I'm glad I now have a real doctor, and unless you're a UW student or are dependent on one, Hall Health isn't for you. read more

First, I need to do some ranting because some other reviewers comments have made me really frustrated. This whole thing about the doctors forcing you to get tested for STI's, especially forcing you during unrelated exams like the sniffles, is absolutely ridiculous. Let me start by giving some statistics. The CDC's studies show that young adults ages 15-24 have four times the reported rate of the rest of the population for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The CDC also suggests that sexually active people within this age range should be tested at least once per year. My guess is that if you are coming into Hall Health you probably fall into this age range, which is why they are suggesting you be tested. I hate to break it to you, but college students have high rates of sexual activity, which means there will be higher rates of disease. If you are too embarrassed to acknowledge this then you probably should not be having sex. Usually doctors and nurses stray from doing things that could get them sued or have their medical licenses revoked. It's against informed consent laws to perform a treatment against a patients will - that's considered assault and you should have reported them if that was the case. Whether they say, "I think you should be tested" or "You need to be tested" you can always refuse! It's not their problem that you mumbled "okay, whatever" in response and so they performed the test. If you halfheartedly agreed then they are going to do the test. You need to grow up and speak up for the treatments that you do and do not want. If you are not sexually active and they do it then you have a problem. And if you went in for "sniffles" and they stuck a swab in your vagina then you are just an idiot. Now that I have that off my chest, let me get to my actual review. I usually come to Hall Health for my yearly gynecological exam (Guess what? I am not always tested for STI's here because I told them that I have had the same partner for 3 years, so I did not think I needed it and surprise, surprise they agreed!) The women in the women's center are all very nice and try their hardest to make a really awkward situation less awkward. I have also gone to the primary care center for what I thought might be strep throat or a sinus infection, but she told me it was just bad allergies and that I should take some Benadryl. This was a little annoying because I waited so long for something I could have just figured out on my own. I also work in the UWMC, so I come to Hall Health for the employee health center to get TB tested, and again everyone is very nice. My only problems are that the wait can sometimes be long even with an appointment, there was a lady in billing who was really rude to me, and the business hours can be hard to make when you go to school and work, but those things aren't too big of a deal. read more

After the renovation, this place is really great! There are tons of check-in counters so your registration process is fast and stream-lined. The exam rooms are still pretty old, but the providers and assistant staff are professional and efficient. There's ample waiting-room area as well, so you don't need to be sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the sicker patients if you don't want to. read more

Planning a trip to Ecuador, I chose this clinic and drove 85 minutes north in traffic to get here from the Tacoma area. My health system didn't have travel health. My web search left few, if any acceptable choices close to home. Each looked like a money pit with sketchy web sites. The check in process was surprisingly fast and hospitable. I liked the staff, all a good balance of efficient and personable. It didn't matter that I am not a UDub student. I worked with Dr. Haulman. She was great! She presented choices, helpful advice, plenty of literature, and a plan for my trip in which she showed interest and insight to get at my health needs. She was also encouraging and an enjoyable conversationalist. I would recommend this clinic for any traveller needing vaccines and other travel health help. The appointment goes much better if you have your complete immunization records with you. It might even save you from making your shoulders a complete pin cushion. The other reviewers mentioning parking are on target. Allow plenty of time for parking. This clinic is in the heart of the UDub campus--follow the directions closely, and ask for plenty of explicit directions at the entry gate if you are not familiar with parking on campus. You won't just wander into the parking lots available on the permit you get at the gate. Parking costs about $8 if you leave campus in less than 4 hrs. Besides the parking, Hall was a great health care experience. I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. read more

Some of the staff are nice and some need to transition to jobs that do not require interacting with people! I absolutely cannot stand Hall Health. This is just one of those things that you go through as a freshman and then realize is terrible so you leave and never come back. Unfortunately it took me longer than just freshman year to find a doctor I liked, so I ended up coming here for a couple years sporadically despite the terrible terrible service. First of all, most of the staff here obviously hate their jobs and it shows. The front desk takes a billion years to check you in, so there are often long lines JUST to get checked in. Therefore you end up being late to your appointment even if you get there early. Second of all, even though they take all your insurance information the first time you come sometimes they'll randomly demand your insurance card and threaten no service if you don't have it. I've never had another doctors office do this since they usually input all the information electronically in addition to taking photocopies. I've also had them try and deny service to me because I didn't have my husky card with me despite having my drivers license and knowing my student ID number. Most of the front desk employees seem to find joy in causing pain, suffering, and long wait times to any students who come here. Then after dealing with the hell that is known as "checking in" here, you get to wait in the lobby for much longer than any other doctors office. Often the wait runs from 30 minutes to an hour from my experiences. This is not a place to go to if you have to be somewhere after your appointment. One time I literally waited 2 hours to be seen, despite people who checked in after me being seen and then leaving. I asked the front desk about it multiple times just to be told that I would be seen but needed to be patient and wait. Finally I got fed up and demanded someone figure out what was taking so long, only to find out that the check in person forgot to check me in. While the front staff is often terrible, it might be ok if they had amazing doctors. However, I've gotten some really weird doctors and some really mean doctors here. I even had one doctor talking about conspiracy theories and told me my pain was just my imagination. I ended up having to go all the way home to see my old doctor and get some medication since he refused to give me anything to help with the pain or sleeping. If you are contemplating going here please heed my warning and if you have the choice DO NOT GO HERE. UW Ravenna Clinic is nearby, has way better hours, awesome staff, and will actually see you at your appointment time. Not to mention Hall Health will often overcharge you for your visit that probably wasn't even worth your time. Go to the UW Ravenna Clinic (it's across the street from U-Village) where you won't have billing charges and they actually care about you. read more

Hall Health stinks. The wait times are endless and the cost is ridiculous. I'll explain. I'm faculty at the University. I needed my ears cleaned. I made an appointment to Hall Health. I thought, school is between sessions, waits will be short -- especially since I made an appointment -- and the price will be good. I was wrong! First, after meeting a receptionist, I waited 20 minutes. Then I was escorted into a second waiting room and waited an additional 15 minutes. Finally I was escorted into an examination room and waited 20 more minutes. I think that's a long wait but, at the time, I consoled myself thinking, at least the price will be reasonable, you know, "you get what you pay for." Finally a doctor came in. She said something about my ears, I affirmed whatever she said. She looked in both ears with an otoscope. She confirmed that I needed my ears cleaned. Great. That 2 minutes of otoscope cost me $104.53. Had I not had insurance, it would have cost me $143.00. Then I sat and waited an additional 10 minutes. Someone arrived to clean my ears. Great, they did that, it cost $74.50. If I didn't have insurance, it would have cost me $105.00. Do you want to wait more than an hour then pay $200 to get your ears cleaned? Then Hall Health is the place for you! It didn't end there. I didn't want to pay -- I wasn't going to win that fight obviously. They sent me to collections (somewhere in Illinois). Fair enough. Challenging anything at Hall Health -- you end up facing their robots. Sorry sir, they say, that's the way we do things. "It's the contract rate," said the automaton from the back room (I waited 10 minutes to talk to her). Ugh. So I thought, OK, I'd better pay before someone breaks my legs. The collections people called me, I said, all right, where do I send the check? But I forgot to ask to whom I make the check payable. When I tried to call them back, I couldn't get through. I figured, I work right near Hall Health, I could walk over and pay. "Can I just pay you directly?" I asked Hall Health by telephone. An automated human being (I believe the same one from the back room) replied: "We don't do that sir." So now I'm trying to find that collection agency. I'm sure I'll find them, but it's a little frustrating, when I'm finally ready to pay, to have trouble paying. I think I'd rather pay the $88 my doctor charges if I ever need my ears cleaned again! read more

Honestly, one of the worst facilities I have ever been in business with. They have messed up our billing now three times, it has been a year long process enough for our insurance balance to restart and they have now put my child on administrative hold 3 times for their problems. They are impeding on her education because they cannot get there stuff together. Their staff has very poor communication between each other and they are an absolute disorganized mess. They take advantages of students by overfilling them and not letting the students know the costs ahead of time. read more

I've been going to hall health for over a decade now, and doctors like Tamara Hazbun MD and Dr. Diane Derboghosian (and their assistants) have always gone out of their way to help, not just with actual appointments but also with sending prescription refills and helping to filling out paperwork that I needed for medicine discounts when I was a broke student. I also feel that they have a sincere interest in helping people, which is in stark contrast to money-motivated, "charge the patient with everything we can" approach of the UW Medical Center (which I do not recommend). read more

I trust her more than any other doctor I have ever dealt with (and that's a lengthy list!) the only reason for the 4 stars is she only works afternoons 2 days a week (she teaches as well) and monday is reserved for appointments and Wednesday she handles whatever drop ins there are. read more

Seems like they are just pretending to know what they're doing. Didn't feel confident that they felt confident and they kept me waiting for over an hour for a consultation that never even happened. On top of that they never actually gave a diagnosis nor gave instructions for how to use the medication they prescribed. The pharmacy has long lines but cheap prices. Never gotten bad care. I almost always get a same day appointment and practical, less medication is better, advice. When I've hurt myself I just walked in and they helped me within 10 minutes, w/o an appointment. To respond to the other reviews -- I've been going to HH for about six years, and I've never been tested for anything I didn't agree to and haven't gotten any bad diagnosis either. They STD test me once every two years when I have my "annual" women's exam, that's it. They've never even asked to at any other apt. Thank goodness. I've always felt who I've seen to be competent and their exam thorough. You do sometimes get a nurse practitioner, so if you want/need to see an MD, make sure you say so when you make the apt. Their pharmacy is very slow but it is non-profit so even w/o insurance medicines cost much less there than everywhere else. I can wait an extra 20 minutes to save me $200! Biggest negative: There is basically no parking. So if your not already on campus it can be a huge hassle to access, especially when you don't feel good. read more
