There was no "hard sell" and he patiently answered all of our questions even though we were in the middle of other renovations and told him we wouldn't be making any decisions that day. The whole process was easy and exactly what you'd expect from a good roofing company. They showed up exactly when they said they would, did a wonderful job and cleaned up before they left. Upon initial inquiry, Specialist Roofing & Repair was pretty quick to reply, so I scheduled a consultation. One odd thing is, when I scheduled, they asked if the would be seeing both my husband and I or just me; I find this a strange question as what if I wasn't married? It is awfully assumptive to think I had to have a husband, but I digress. Noah was scheduled to perform the inspection. He was running a bit late and called about 5 minutes after our scheduled time letting me know he ran into some traffic and would be about another 5 minutes or so. He showed up 20 minutes later and it was the oddest thing, he parked in my driveway. When he came up to the door he asked if it was okay and I said okay, but honestly, I found it really strange and just didn't want to prolong the appointment. Upon inspection, he seemed very knowledgeable and personable and did a pretty thorough inspection taking pictures and videos of the roof and surrounding areas. As mentioned, I am the type to obtain multiple quotes, so I expected that after he did the inspection, we would go over his findings and a few days later I would receive a quote. After he did the inspection, he showed me a video of something the other roofers didn't, which was nice as I like a thorough job, but then said he would be in touch with a quote. I received a phone call a few days later asking to discuss findings, but when I called back, I got an AI bot which was then followed up by a call back from a real person. Oddly enough, when they called, they literally said nothing. They asked if it was a good time to talk and I said yes but they wanted to talk when "my husband was around." Even though I said it was a good time, they said they would call back. I followed up via Yelp message. It has been over a week and I have yet to receive any quote from them. Needless to say, I won't be going with this company. They aren't willing to work with just a woman and are unresponsive.

When I contacted Rafael & Iris Roofing, my biggest concern was not only having the roof done correctly this time, but also finding Corning shingles that would match the existing shingles on the main house, since both structures can be seen from the street. Rafael & Iris' lead contractor, Ruben, assured me that neither would be a problem in terms of finding the right color and the skills of the men he worked with. Now, to be sure "not a problem" is a line contractors always say when they want to get your business, but in this case it was the absolute truth! I bought my house in Sherman Oaks in 1997 and while I was out of town on work for a couple months…read moreshortly after moving in, El Nino hit. Fortunately, my garage (which was storing much of what I had that wasn't in the house) was the only thing that suffered damage, Unfortunately, most of my mementos were destroyed. I reroofed, and now almost 30 years later, with rumors are that El Nino is making a return visit, I thought (since we had suffered minor leaks during some of the recent rains) it was time to reroof, so I put Yelp to work to find me some people to interview. I picked five for the information I could glean, asking few questions, since I knew opening my mouth connected to a brain that knows little about roofing, would be a bad idea and also seeing if people were helpful with their explanations. Everyone (maybe except one) was personable enough for me to think I could work with them, but much of the information was kinda the same thing (although I noted some improvements in roofing since 97 that were useful to ask each about). The prices were more or less the same, and close enough that I knew I could find a point that would be roughly around the general price for them all, so it wasn't money. It was rapport and ultimately who gave me the greatest sense of trust. And. I learned, information that no one else told me. Roy, with Top Roofing was the ONLY one of the five that I saw who discussed the solar pool heating on my roof with me; each of the people I met with went on the roof. Not one other person mentioned it, and if you have solar panels on the roof - it's a consideration in doing the job. When I called the others who'd come to the house to say I'd made my choice and asked why I picked someone else I told them this - it was determinative that one person told me this was a job that needed to be done in addition to the roofing. He hooked me up with a solar heating company, he'd worked with before and I got on the phone with them and felt reasonably satisfied that between them and Roy it would get done on time, on budget. (It's not a small add-on to have them remove and reinstall the works, so if this affects you, be warned). Roy stayed in touch with me throughout - He came by and we spoke on phone daily. We had agreed that in the cost we he would completely replace and repaint a tongue-and-groove porch which was pretty rotted out) and aside from some permit forms I had to fill out, gave me a date of less than a week every date was kept. His crew was punctual, and so neat - the pool was covered, they cleaned up each of the five days they worked. Roy walked the yard with me before they started so I could make sure my gardener trimmed where he needed to, then walked it again, to tell me where we might need to keep trimming. He touched base with me every day, and when it was over gave me a video of the roof (both the main house and the garage were reroofed), and the porch which looked haggard now looks beautiful. I can't say enough about what a positive experience this was. And it looks really good. And since the last time I put on a roof, the tile now cools down the exterior which is good to have in an LA summer. The roof is up, the solar heating is back in operation. Let's go. A roof is an expensive proposition, and I think it's ok to know little if you hire someone you believe in (and, I'll admit, test out a little bit at the onset), who speaks to you in a way that is helpful and doesn't overwhelm you, but I think this was an incredibly positive experience in terms of labor, cleanliness, schedule and most importantly communication. Didnt get some of the "sales" type vibes from the others that came out who call back offering to lower the price. I dont like that tactic so Art passed that test. I felt as Art said he who started in the roofing business and working for others and decided to do his own company, he knew what worked and what didnt. My research aligned with what he told me and he uses the highest grade products for the job as standard. The crew started when I needed and did a great job on the demo... cleaning really well afterwards. They covered my landscaping where needed and my pool just to make sure nothing fell in which I appreciated. They also put painters plastic in my garage since we work in there to cover things as well as our family room with the pitched ceiling. As you do get some light dust/debris coming thru since no attic space in these areas. The job went right on schedule and Art coordinated with Culver City building department for permit and approvals. It all passed smoothly. I made some special requests for adjustments to venting which Art happily did without any extra costs. He add more vents than I had originally and gave good advice on the process. My roof had a fair amount of angles and valleys and Art pointed out he could make them more effective at draining water properly. I chose to go with the visible valleys as I liked the idea of seeing them and all the things he got were pre painted and matched really well. Communication was very good with him. His job foreman spoke English which was important as things do come up as the work progresses but all handled really well. It all went very smoothly and you could tell the team are experts at roofing. I decided to replace my gutters as well and the price seemed reasonable for that too. They did a great job on it all and it looks fantastic and now I wait for the big super El Niño coming this winter with a lot more confidence that I will weather the storms. Art said he would come back quickly if any issues and I believe that would be true. A new roof is a huge amount of money and there are sooo many places to choose from. While many may be great im sure others not so much and the prices can vary quite a bit. I trusted Art would follow through on quality... and they did which is very important these days. I have had lots of home improvement projects that did not go well. This is one that gets a gold star.
