I was driving down the 101 in my virtually new Fiat, following a truck with debris in the back. Do you ever drive behind trucks with poorly secured cargo, and think to yourself, "geez, that's an accident waiting to happen?" Well, yes. A cement block fell off the truck, hit the road, shattered, and the pieces then hit my car, blowing out (literally) a window and destroying the paint over about 50% of the car's surface. The Fiat dealer recommended Hustead's. This review is actually also a ringing endorsement for my AAA insurance, and everyone involved in it. Hustead's is a AAA partner shop. I drove the car to them, called AAA and reported the accident, and -- they took care of everything. Literally. Two weeks later, I received a call from JR, saying, the car is ready. It was as good as new. This was a complicated, messy situation. I can't say enough good things about AAA for their coverage of the damage, and, about Hustead's, for the quality of the work, and for their partnership with AAA. Communication was terrific. EXTREMELEY good. The staff is SUPER kind (especially their lovely front desk leader), the employees are straight and to the point, quick and excellent work. I got rear ended and they handled allllll of the insurance paperwork which felt amazing to be stress free about. Took my car in on Monday, it was ready by Wednesday (mind you they couldn't even work on it 4th of July). Got my car back motivated to clean the whole thing only to find they had cleaned the inside for me (put all the random things I had laying around in a box for me, vacuumed) and they even cleaned my tires which I had been avoiding for quite some time. I was a former customer of Hustead's Auto Body of Berkeley. Here was my experience with them. In March 2017, I had a car accident. I contacted Hustead, and they immediately arranged to toll my car to their shop. I was grateful that Hustead took my car in even their shop was closed​ on Saturday. I later talked to an agent assigned to my case and expressed my desire of damaged parts to be replaced by OEM parts. I received no update of the estimate for weeks. In April 2017, I received a phone call from the assigned agent. During this phone conservation, he did not explicitly ask for my permission to start the repair and my understanding was that this was a courtesy call for an update. I made it clear in this conversation that I would wait for the full estimate in writing from my insurance company and would discuss in detail of which OEM parts to be installed before the authorization for the fix. To my surprise, Hustead had gone ahead to fix the car with aftermarket parts. To change out the aftermarket parts with OEM, the Berkeley office manager stated that because their agent made the phone call (even without my authorization), I was responsible for the cost of the OEM parts and labor (cost of $854.23). I firmly believe that the agent was at fault fixing my car with some aftermarket parts without my consent. After the repair was done, I called two times to make sure that my car was ready for pick up and both times the agent on the phone assured me that it was ready. However, when I picked up my car, I found that the battery light and AWD lights were lit. The car had to return to Hustead's for repair. Three days later, I was notified that the car was ready for pick up, but this​ time I found that the air conditioning was not working. I had to return the car back to Hustead's for yet another repair. Five days later, I went to Hustead's to pick up my car and found that the fog light was not working, and the bumper paint job was of​ poor quality. After more than a month since the accident, I was still without my car. Out of frustration, I contacted the owner of Hustead's Autobody. The owner took responsibility​ to make sure that my car was fixed correctly after the fourth/fifth visit at Hustead's, and he took the vehicle to a ​Honda dealer for a thorough check-up​ before delivering the car to me (1 star goes to him). Hustead's motto is professionalism, attention to detail, and ability to efficiently meet the needs of customers. My experience at Hustead's Berkeley office was just the opposite. The communication with the agent was vague, and the fix with aftermarket parts was performed without my consent. The quality of the repair from Hustead's was poor. No one at the shop bothered to check if the repaired parts were in working order prior to notifying the customer. The whole process with Hustead's not only cost​ me downtime from work, but it also generated tremendous inconvenience and stress. My experience with the owner was positive. He genuinely wanted to make things right, ​and I appreciated his effort. I hope that after my complaint, Hustead's has improved their communication​​ with customers and the QA/QC of their repair jobs. read more

Stopped by to fix my car door which was bent out of shape when AAA attempted to pry open the door to get my keys. The gentleman at the front desk came to my car and bent it back into shape. It fixed the car door and he didn't charge since he said it was an easy fix and it is a common problem when they use that technique. Really friendly, quick, and honest service. I had the worst experience at Hustead's! The short story is: 1. Customer service is horrible: They never once called me 2. Their quality of work is horrible: they took it back the 1st time to fix it only to have it still look bad 3. The owner said he would like to work on my car a 3rd time and would call me to set it up but I'm not holding my breath. I ended up going there at least 5 times to get the work completed and with a 1 year old and car seat it was so inconvenient. It was such an ordeal for a small dent in a door, I can't imagine if I had a bigger accident! read more

Pros: Body repair looked OK, service staff is friendly Cons: Inconvenient hours, sloppy work Took my car there because preferred by my insurance. Hustead's service writers were both great; friendly, helpful, etc. They got my car turned around in a reasonable time. They're only open until 5:00, so there's no way to pick up the car without taking time off work. The downside, though, was that they didn't reconnect the wiring in the door. It's a simple mistake, easy to fix, and not a huge deal except for the inconvenient hours. So this little slip on their part meant taking another hour off. In sum, if it's convenient for you with your insurance, you could probably do worse. On the other hand, I'll probably look around for somewhere else next time. read more

Despite the fact that the nearby Volvo dealer recommended Hustead's when my friendly neighborhood garbage truck decided that it was a good idea to back itself into the front of my wagon whilst I waited for it to unblock my driveway, and despite the fact that these guys are nice people and try to do a good job, and despite that they were able to come and pick me up when I needed it, it is very hard for me to recommend them due to the following reasons: 1) They were very poor about communicating to me the status of my vehicle, and did not contact me even on the day it was scheduled to be ready. When I finally decided to call *them*, they casually said that they needed the car through to the beginning of the next week because of what they felt were imperfections in the paint job. 2) When the next week came along, the car was still not ready because of the paint job, and again they were poor about contacting me. I told them to just give me the car back, and we could take care of it later. 3) When 'later' came along, I had them come take the car, and was again promised a date that they'd be done. I think there were also a few other issues with the repair job which escape my memory. 4) Throughout most of this time, I had a rental car, which by the final promised repair date for my wagon I made the mistake of returning the rental, only then to again find out at the very last minute that the car would not be ready until the next day. I can say that the work was satisfactory, but it really did come with its intangible costs. I think Hustead's could do much better were it to work out the kinks in its communication style and just try to be more customer-minded. I really would like to recommend them just for how nice they were and their seeming attention to detail, but I just can't. read more

I rarely write reviews, especially poor ones, but Hustead's Auto Body in Berkeley really merits one. Like many others on Yelp, I went to Hustead's upon my insurance company's recommendation after someone knocked off my driver's side mirror in the middle of the night. Hustead's estimate was quick and service was friendly at first, though the price was steep - $493 to replace the side mirror (and, conveniently, my deductible was $500). The day the car was supposed to be ready, I called - nope, not ready. I checked back again the next day, and the next, and for nearly a week thereafter. For two days it was "waiting to be detailed" - vacuumed - and, when I offered to vacuum it myself if I could pick the car up sooner, I was told that I couldn't do that. The mirror wasn't installed properly, and I had to fix the siding myself to keep it from howling as I drove. The worst part came later, however. In order to install the side mirror, they had to remove the driver's side armrest (that branches off the car door). Since then, the armrest FALLS OFF THE DOOR every time I pull the door closed. And this is a brand new, 26K car! Save your money, time and patience, and find another auto body shop. read more

Stay away from Hustead's! I called them to replace my flat tire I had at work. I have a proper spare, and all of the tools to change the spare- just not the brawn required to change a tire. So I called with confidence in what I thought would be a very easy job. Not so with Hustead's. The tow truck driver arrived, and immediately said I did not have all of the parts needed to change the tire out. I have the bag that came with the car, all parts were there. He insisted that he could not do it, and also could not tow my car to the tire shop I normally use. All of this resulted in more money. Changing a spare is much less than a tow. He towed the truck to Firestone on University- that is the place he uses, he said "they do this for me all the time". Firestone could change out the spare, of course, they also said they could not repair my flat. I was happy to have my car working & got out of there. I took my car to my regular mechanic- who looked at all of my tools and said yes, you have everything. He proceeded to show me how each piece works -very simple!-. I took my tire to my regular tire guy- who fixed it for $28.50. My mechanic was so upset that they towed the car & lied- he told me to call Hustead's & let them know. And so I did. Wow! I thought the worst part was over. Not so. They have said that I am lying, that they are very concerned that their driver did not know what he is doing, but that I have to prove it (!) So after 15 minutes of inane terse conversation, with constant interruptions whenever I tried to speak, Janice asked for my mechanic's name & number in order to verify my supposedly false account. This place is very bad and obviously full of crooks from driver to manager, so stay away if you want an honest, fair transaction. read more

After getting into an accident that was not my fault, I was referred to Hustead's by my insurance company... boy was that a bad choice. Although they did finish the repairs in less time then they originally promised, I wished they would have taken their time. Now, each time I accelerate or break there is a creaking/squeaking sound that comes from the area they worked on my car. After bringing the car back to the shop to have the noise checked out and fixed multiple times, they were unable to do anything about it, and their message to me was "It's probably just a coincidence, take it to the dealer and have them check it out." I would have to agree with another reviewer about George. Not only did he not return any of my phone calls, but during my 3rd visit to the shop this morning, his greeted me with "You're not the same guy who has brought in this car before. Where is the other guy who brought in the car last week?" Talk about making a customer feel welcomed and valued. read more

Dear Everyone on Yelp, The significant other accidentally pulled my car's front bumper loose when backing over a parking stopper. He took my car into this shop and had a great experience. Please read on: When I entered this establishment I was immediately warmed by the home-like vibe in the waiting area. I was greeted attentively, and connected with Judy, who speaks to people as if they are long-time friends. This means a lot to me as a person walking into an auto-body shop hoping to have a well-informed and honest experience. I quickly overcame my fear about getting hustled with unreasonable prices. The front bumper on the car was largely detached from one of those horrible, yet purposeful pieces of cement in parking lots. Judy assessed the situation quickly. She was energized and positive. On her hands and knees she worked at the bumper for twenty minutes, encountering a few obstacles along the way, but swiftly reconnecting it and securing it nicely with a screwdriver. When she stood up and said "We're done!" and I waited for the bill, but she implied that she would not accept money. It was free of charge. I absolutely tried to pay her a second time, but she would not accept any fee. I believe Judy represents what it means to balance running a successful business that exists in a community. I was so impressed by the great work Husteads did on my car that I sent the following email to the manager: Dear Mr. Reddy, I asked Michael for your email because I wanted to let you know what fantastic service he provided and what a great job you did on my car. I had been putting off dealing with repairs to my car because I dreaded the process. Michael made it very easy for me. He started by educating me on the whole insurance process when I first came in for an estimate and suggested a way I could save money. He kept me informed on the status of the work-- and it was done when he said it would be. It looked beautiful when I picked it up! And sparkling clean inside and out! I couldn't be more pleased. Then he said that if I brought him touch up paint for my car, he would touch up some of the dings that were not part of the repairs you did. I came by yesterday and that is exactly what he did, also giving me a lesson on touching up my car which I really appreciated. He definitely exceeded my expectations. I've been to Hustead's twice. My first experience was a good one. My friend had accidentally backed into my passenger door and left a few large dents. I brought my car in to Hustead's, they gave me an estimate in no time, took my car and returned it to me within one week. I worked with Michael, who was very friendly and a pleasure to speak with. He routinely called to give me status updates on my car, which I really appreciated. My second experience is what dropped my rating significantly. About 2 months after visiting them the first time, I fell victim to street parking and had my driver's door scratched and dented. Since I had such a good experience the first time, coming here again was a no brainer. I worked with Micheal again, but this time, not one call to update me on my car. He didn't even call me to tell me that my car was ready about 1.5 weeks later, I had to call the staff multiple times instead. When I finally got my car back, Michael points out that the rubber piece lining the inside of my driver's door was torn off and ripped. Knowing that this was not the case before I brought the car in (I always do a thorough inspection before bringing my car anywhere) he promptly offered to replace it for free. Great! Except that was almost 2 months ago..... Since then I've called him numerous times trying to figure out when it could be replaced. He always promised to call me back with updates but didn't ever call me back once. read more

I was directed to Hustead's by my insurance company, Mercury, for some minor body and paint damage on my front bumper. The experience was painless. I was told my car would be ready in about 48 hours and to expect to be able to get it back Friday morning. Fortunately, it the repairs only took about 36 hours and I got it back on Thursday evening. When I got there my car was washed and vacuumed, looking good as new! The damage appraiser who handled the paperwork for me was JR Cruz and I found his service to be excellent. Though I didn't need a rental car they offered to call a rent-a-car place for me if I needed a vehicle. Great service! read more

Took my wife's BMW in and I'm a fan. I live in Dublin but had work around the area and pleasantly surprised on how quick they finished the work and ease of process. Service was professional and very warm and friendly...like I was a friend from way back. And for a shop with not so big company feel, they offered all the big company services like rental car and courtesy shuttle. I was a victim of a hit and run. The dent was not huge but it was well aimed- at the nexus of the fender, bumper, and headlight. On the final walkthrough when I picked up the car I noticed that the fit of the fender was off a bit. Hustead's saw the same thing and immediately offered to make it right. They went above and beyond, replacing the poorly fitting fender and getting the car back to me ASAP. Hustead's proved to me that they are committed to excellent service. Even though it is 2012, it seems as though women customers are treated differently than man customers and are often ripped off. I love Hustead's. Each time I have been (for the same incident), I have been met promptly. My needs have been immediately met. I have been treated with gentleness and kindness (yes, gentleness at an auto body shop). I have been in before (about 1yr ago) for a bumper fix and my car looked brand NEW after that. Recently, my car got egged and while trying to clean it off, my friend used a heavy duty tire brush (meant for hubcap cleaning), on the hood of my car. It ripped through the finish and paint. I knew the second that happened that I would go back to Hustead's. Joe V. the detailer there fixed the entire hood paint job WHILE I WAITED. Needless to say, I was seriously impressed. After a minor collision, I went to Hustead's at the request of my insurance company. After the parts arrived, I dropped my car off on Monday morning and was back on the road Wednesday afternoon! They have a friendly and courteous staff who clearly value customer service. Also, as someone who is forced to park on the street under a giant palm tree that is home to lots of gnarly spiders and a 5 member family of raccoons, I am used to my car being perpetually dirty. So, it was great to get my car back all repaired and such a nice surprise to have it freshly washed and sparkly clean! read more

I was rear-ended on a Saturday, called my insurance company, and Hustead's was ready and waiting for me by Monday. They worked seamlessly with my insurance company, had a rental car waiting for me and the whole thing was literally as easy as pie! Car was out by Friday with new rear bumper, etc, and it looks great. The staff were friendly. My car was cleaned and detailed in the process and even though I would have rather not needed auto body work, I am so glad to have had such an easy, warm and customer-friendly experience! read more

I have been here twice and I'll put both repairs in one review. It was both on the same car but different panels. I came to Husteads because they were in Triple A's direct repair network. I came when someone's bad parking skills backed up to me and did a minor dent to my front bumper. It was minor bump. All it needed was to pop it out, refinished and then repainted. I was pretty happy with it initially. But upon further inspection, it looks like where the edges meet other panels aren't painted. Example, where the top of the bumper connects to the front fender clearly isn't painted on the edge. (maybe they masked over it so it wasn't painted? Who knows) The second time I came here for a basketball sized dent on my driver's door. They took the metal off and gave me a new metal. Looking on the inside, where the metal bends to inner door panel looks pretty sloppy. They didn't even bother to at least put a sealer on it to make it look more original from the factory, instead it looks like some bad welding job. On the outside, the new door metal isn't flushed to match the same level as the beginning of the passenger door. The new door was slightly made more in. Bottom line, I will not recommend this place to anyone who wants a high quality repair. They should have a quality control person inspect the repairs before sending it back to the customers. Missing areas where sections didn't get painted or even aligning the panel to match is a sign of bad quality. But I had an older car so I wasn't as detail oriented or OCD about this car. But if I bought in a newer car and got misaligned panels or unpainted areas I would not be impressed at all. Overall I'll give this a C/C+ grade so a 3 stars on that scale if 5 stars is a A+. It's sufficient but would could be better. It's okay for an older car but it's not worth the time to miss work to get this redone. One thing I did like was the customer service. They do they care of you with a rental if you need one. There's a Hertz phone (kind of like a public pay phone but only call hertz) in the waiting room to call Hertz and you can make a video chat with a Hertz guy to get a rental and swipe your credit card and driver's license. When the Hertz pay phone doesn't pick up, they'll give you a ride to the local Hertz to get a rental in their courtesy vehicle. And they have a lifetime warranty (with asterisk). I believe they had to give one because of Triple A's direct repair network. Also, I like their interior + exterior cleaning. Vacuum pretty much all my dust away and spotless. Exterior was pretty good too, shiny and some kind of wax. read more
