Rather than tell you why you should never use them, I'll just give you the timeline: 3/23/25 - I ask how long it would take to put obscure glass in 4 small cabinet doors, and they say it is normally the same day. 4/24/25 (Thursday) - I'm ready for the work, so I call to confirm and they say, actually, it will be ready Friday. No big deal, I drop them off and plan to send a courier to pick them up. , 4/25/25 (Friday) - Courier picks them up, brings them back to me, and as soon as I open the package I can see all sorts of problems - spots in the glass, silicone caulk leaking over the glass, etc. I tried thoroughly cleaning, to no avail. I call them, and they say, "Okay, bring it back." (No apology at all.) I say, "You should pay for the courier", and they refuse. Fine, whatever, I need this done, so I pay for it. They say it should be ready Monday. 4/28-5/2/25 (Monday-Friday) - Every day I call, and every day they say it isn't done, and that there's someone out sick, that the guys who do this work in the shop are usually out on jobs and can only do it first thing in the morning, that the dog ate their homework, that there's no manager I can talk to, etc. Finally, I gave up and sent yet another courier to pick them up. I'll have to remove the last bits of silicone myself. I asked why they committed to doing the work in a timely fashion if they can't really do it, and they said "this is timely" (!). I told them that I'd be posting a review on Yelp and Google, and they said that was very unfair of me. You decide. Attaching photos of a couple of the original defects. read more

I got an estimate and scheduled a measure to get the work done. From that point on they were horrible. From the lack of communication and courtesy for the measure appointment, first one guy showed up who didn't know how to do anything, called for another guy. Bottom line they didn't know how to handle window glass replacements and pried and bent the metal trim around one of my windows. I suggested that it wasn't a good idea to do that. They finally left and said they would go back to their shop and speak to someone else, come up with a plan and get back to me. Never heard from them again. Hy-Lite installed our shower glass and bathroom wall mirrors about 8 years ago. We opted for a minimalist approach to the shower glass panel--Brian and team were good about suggesting a solution that removed the need for hardware along the bottom edge of the glass panel, instead relying on a strong adhesive to hold the bottom edge in place. Fast forward to today and that bottom edge came loose. I felt that this was in no small part due to us wanting less hardware--and we were totally willing to pay to have a u-channel installed to hold the bottom edge of the glass more securely in place. Hy-Lite not only added the u-channel today, but they did not charge us. I offered to pay, but they consider this part of their warranty. Even without this exceptional warranty service, I would highly recommend Hy-Lite. They are detail oriented, great communicators and conscious of the design impact of their glass and mirror installations. 8 years later we couldn't be happier with the initial install and their exceptional follow-up service. 5 stars and high fives for Hy-Lite! read more

I live in Ballard and build custom furniture and home accessories. I recently found Hy-Lite because I was seeking advice on the best adhesive to mount a mirror to a plywood backing for a project I was doing. After being advised by one of the owners, I walked out with a tube of mirror mastic, which has strong adhesion but won't eat through the back of the mirror like other heavy duty adhesives may do. So I take the mastic home, adhere my mirror to my plywood backing and proceed to spend many hours building a custom mirror out of wood strips for a client in Texas. As I am doing the final cleaning of the mirror, all of a sudden I see this scratches along the bottom, including one very deep one. Keep in mind...I did not buy this mirror from Hy-Lite, it was my own mirror that I had cut to size long ago before even knowing about Hy-Lite. So I take the completed mirror into Hy-Lite hoping they may have some magic tricks to remove scratches...unfortunately, the scratches were too deep to correct without distorting the glass. I took the mirror home and did a bit of surgery to expose the edges of the mirror and went back to Hy-Lite. When I walked in, they were in the middle of lunch, but one of the gentlemen got right up and asked me "what's the diagnosis?". I said I could not get the scratched mirror removed so he (and I) went in the back and he carefully tried to pry it up; but the mastic was doing its job and not letting go. He could tell I was desperate and completely bummed that this mirror turned into such a problem so he went to one of the racks, pulled an "offcut" from the shelf, measured my mirror and cut a new one to size in a matter of seconds. He handed it to me and said "give this a try; no charge". I was floored. I took it home and used the same mastic to adhere the new mirror over the old one and nobody will ever know the difference. I have not been a Hy-Lite customer for years, nor did I make a huge prior purchase that would warrant this type of generosity. He did it because he was a good guy and this is exactly why I like to deal with local small businesses. I will go back to this shop for all my glass/mirror purchases in the future. Now, I'm not suggesting that they are in the business of handing out free mirrors...they are not....but these are good, honest people who are very focused on helping their customers regardless of whether they are small or large. I had a few glass table tops made at Hy-Lite and am very happy with them. I wrote my measurements, walked in and spoke to Byron to make an order and received the finished tops a week or two later. Super easy experience after calling several other vendors in town who were either not interested in a small job or serviced only commercial customers or didnt offer delivery. I went to Hy-Lite because I need four panes of glass cut to size for custom poster frames I'd built - the largest being about 40" x 40". I brought the frames into the store and the employee at the register at the time advised on the glass thickness, strength, and price options. They cut and installed the glass the same day and were ready to pick up that afternoon. Great experience overall. Hy-Lite has that "small-business" customer service feel that makes you glad to went. During a BR remodel, my husband and I measured the opening after the tile was done and ordered a shower door at Morgan's. (I now know that one should buy the door from the glass company.). When door came in, I hired Hylite to install it. The man who came to check out the job found that the door was too wide to fit in the space by 3/16". (mistake 2 - same as # 1, because if Hylite experts had measured it, it would have been on them to fix, though it would have been right.) Byron, the owner, and his crack team helped me figure out how best to resolve the problem. They explained that there is more margin for error with the doors they use because there are different hinges that can be used with the same door design, which allows more or less clearance. After much deliberation, I ordered a new door and they installed it for me. The installer even gave me some advice on my shower plumbing that was unexpectedly helpful. As part of a bathroom remodel I needed a larger mirror cut down to a smaller size to fit over a new vanity cabinet. I called Hy-Lite and they said they would be able to take care of this no problem, and was quoted $20-25 for the job. I delivered the mirror and and spent some time talking to a sales associate about a quote for a frameless glass shower enclosure, as I will be needing this for the remodeled bathroom as well. I left the store and about an hour later received a phone call saying the mirror was done. The mirror looked great, nicely polished edges. I was then told it would be $40 and when I said the quote was $20-25 they gave no explanation for the price change. While the quality of the work was good, I was very disappointed in being charged twice as much as quoted. They will not be receiving my business for the glass shower enclosure because of this discrepancy. read more

I wanted to love this place, but am disappointed. The new glass in our entry looks great. BUT, the experience has been rocky and the work is still incomplete. We were told when we initially visited the showroom that Matelux would be a great glass for our project and that it would only take 5-7 days from the go-ahead to get on the project. We were excited about it. They came out and measured, and the person who measured for us tried to talk me out of Matelux, saying it wasn't right for our purpose--when again, the guy we spoke to in-office suggested Matelux as ideal. Anyway, we stuck with Matelux for our entry. They called and scheduled the project, with close to a three-week lead time. Very different from what we were told, but not a deal-breaker. They came and did the glass, installing one panel backwards. They came back later that day to flip the backwards panel of Matelux around. With that fix, the glass looked great. But then my husband returned home and realized that they did not cut down the stops so that the glass could be framed. This was something covered in the quote that the job was based on, with mention of bringing a table saw. Now there is another two-week wait for them to come back and finish the work they neglected to do, which should take very little time. Though the end result will look really great, but I expected much better service and attention from this local shop. read more
