I enjoy their produce section, along with their healthy choices options. I also like the overall look and layout if the store, uncluttered and vibrant. We had came in to get a money order and the machine jammed. The employee (Jackson) that helped us, was working very hard trying to fix the machine. He had called for management multiple times to help him because it was his first time changing the receipt machine. He did a great job. His other coworkers didn't even try to help him and were standing around. They had gotten a call that the truck was there and the employees that were standing around left Jackson to try and fix the machine himself. We waited 30 minutes and management still hadn't came to help him. Jackson did a great job fixing the machine and we got our money order. Management needs to improve because the way that no one was helping him was ridiculous. We are frustrated that this wasn't resolved sooner. read more

Missed out on breakfast at the hotel I was staying at so ran here for a donut to start the day. The store seemed clean and lots of checkers available. Walked through the Wine and Spirits. Seems like the seltzers have officially taken over. They also had a growler and crowler station behind check out for beer-to-go. The donuts were good but seemed a little expensive ($1.50 for fried cinnamon rolls or apple fritters). All in all a good experience. read more

This has to be one of my very favorite grocery stores in the area. It is exceptionally clean, well-stocked, and you truly do get that "helpful smile" in every aisle. Because I currently live in a rural area, I visit here frequently when in the area. (I am the one loitering over the gourmet cheese counter.) The produce is always gorgeous and there is a bountiful selection of everything I need and of everything I don't need...but am tempted to buy. Last week I even found Rambutans in the tropical fruit section. I paid way too much for them, but they made this girl from Panama smile. read more

Any time I'm in Ankeny, I try to pick up groceries at this Hy-Vee. It is always clean, stocked well, and the employees are polite. The wine and spirits section has a good choice of everything that you could want, especially seltzers. This is one of the Hy-Vees that seem to have gone towards expanding their offerings, but hasn't hit the levels other have with nail salons and shoe stores, for which I'm very thankful. I know times are tough as far as finding workers. But good lord. I go to Hy-Vee for two things - the meat and deli counter. That kid they recently hired for the meat counter reminds me of Jeff Spiccoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. "I need three New York Strips." The kid: "uhhhh, what?? Ummm, uhhh..." Another new kid in that department is incredibly rude. The one older gentleman who's worked there for a while is always who I'm hoping is there. I ask for a pound of smoked turkey at the deli. Two of the guys who work there know me and know exactly what I want. Always a pleasure. The two new kids - one spent nearly two minutes trying to put the meat inside the bag before the other guy had to come help him. The other new kid, instead of placing the wax paper on the scale, weighing the meat, then placing it in the bag, just grabs the meat and places it directly in the bag. And god forbid, don't ask them about the specials advertised upfront or in coupons. That will confuse them beyond repair. Fareway is a lot further away. But it's getting to the point that, for my own sanity, I may have to take the longer drive. read more

Every time I have ordered food at their hot food area I have been satisfied with the hot products and the cold products. I have asked them a couple times to add more or just ask for the hot items without sides. They have accommodated all my requests with a smile. I was here early to get some chicken, potatoes, onions, carrots and celery for a crock pot recipe. Everything was readily available and easy to find. Fairly good prices, too! Very family friendly. Friendly staff. Clean. Well laid out. They also have a gas station and Market Cafe at this location. Plenty of parking. Marcydiner tantrum scale of 5/5-no screaming kids. Checkout was fast, too! This place my be clean but they do not know how to treat their employees! I have heard that a lot of them are not getting enough hours and they keep hiring more people on, just so they don't have to pay overtime! Plus there is not a 'helpful smile' with a lot of employees. A lot of them look like they want noting more then to quit. Not only that but other then store managers and maybe the occasional other managers who never seem to have time for the customer I don't see a lot of help from managers! Probably the nicest Hy-Vee in Iowa. Being too large can be a bad thing, but that's really my only complaint. Produce is always super fresh, getting a quick meal is awesome. The meat department spoils you with selection. I love the kinds of cheese they have (and all the samples). Cookies for kids, such a brilliant idea... other than my little one now having it always on her list (along with seeing the lobsters). The market grill is also exceptional. Awesome food for less, arguably the best atmosphere in Ankeny (odd that it's in a grocery store). I think my life is a little out of control. I'm writing reviews of grocery stores. To be fair though, this is a well deserved review. I've lived in 6 cities in the last few years and been to countless grocery stores (I REALLY like grocery shopping) and this Hy-Vee has to be one of the best. I basically assumed the Whole Foods in West Des Moines would be my #1 grocery store in all of the Des Moines area but this Hy-Vee is a serious competitor. Whole Foods has better prepared food but this Hy-Vee rivals (if not beats) in every other category. They have an entire cookware section, all the organic/gluten free/other bizarre dietary need sections, high end soaps (Brommer's for $12.99??), and honestly everything. Also, did I mention it's 24 hours? I can get frozen pizzas at 3 am again. Huzzah! read more

This Hy-Vee is just as great as the other ones in the state. I am usually buying my groceries from a Hy-Vee if I'm not close to a Walmart. Even after hours you can stop by here and grab their premade food and just heat it up. Hy-Vee is very community oriented and has their store be accommodating to everyone. Sad to say but Hy-Vee produce over the last couple month is probably the worst on the market. Don't recognize the brands anymore and the quality is very poor. Whole Foods and even Fareway have continued to provide us with a great product. For the obvious price premium you pay to shop at Hy-Vee as a whole this should never be the case. They have so many things they do right, but somehow they always mess up at the end. You would think that bagging groceries would be simple and important. Over stuffing plastic bags, putting cans on top of eggs, putting rotisserie chicken in the same bag as frozen vegetables or placing the bread at the bottom and stacking other bags on top. This is the final impression of their service and it should be a good experience not a frustrating one. Target is starting to look better and better. read more

So, this is the new Hy-Vee in Ankeny. The prepared foods are nice the store is always clean. The market Grill. While it had some growing pains, now seems to be well run. So why only 3 stars? The store consistently has a problem with rotation. I can even begin to count the number of times I gotten home to find mold on fruit or milk on the shelf with a sell buy date of the next day or even expired. You shouldn't have to be double checking groceries as you buy them to make sure they are fresh. Today my spouse brought home a 4 pack of Kings Hawaiian rolls, and there was mold on the bottom. Now I'm not unreasonable. I worked at a grocery store for over a decade and most of that time was graveyard shifts stocking shelves. It's hard to keep up rotation. But the number of times there has been this issue at this store compared to the other Hy-Vee in Ankeny makes me concerned about the management. read more

Fantastic selection on everything. Never have an issue findings a parking space. I often park down by the liquor entrance, and I'm always blown away at the selection of craft beers and wines. Heading through the liquor entrance brings me out right by the Natural Foods section, where I do most of my shopping: milk, eggs, and snacks are always fresh. Great selection of non-GMO, gluten free meal bars for quick energy throughout the day. Never had to wait long in lines, and then Starbucks is right by the exit on the west side. I called and they called back before grabbing a cold one off the shelf and sending it out. I love this HyVee. The selection is amazing. There is a large cheese selection with some unique cheeses for a reasonable price. The bakery has a good selection of breads, cookies, cakes, and those yummy cupcakes and muffins. The health food section is large with a lots of choices for most foods. Oh, my gosh, what a gorgeous grocery store! This place is huge! I think they have every kind of food product a person could possibly want to purchase here! They have the standard grocery items, bulk foods, butcher counter, bakery, dairy, etc that you expect in a market. But, they also have a restaurant, Starbucks, a Sushi Bar, a Gelato Bar. Holy Smokes! The store is clean and very well maintained. It is also quite new. True to the HyVee jingle, there is "a helpful smile in every aisle". The parking lot is large and easy to get in and out of. They also have a gas station on the premises, where you can fill up for a discount when you buy advertised items using their fuel saver card. I must say, the HyVee stores in Lincoln, Nebraska (and some of those are pretty nice, actually) but they look practically ghetto when compared to this place! read more

I'd been told how wonderful Hy-Vee was and decided to compare it to my familiar southern options. I was super impressed! Besides the cleanliness and friendly workers, the variety was unreal! I think I would live in the "healthy section" exclusively. I strolled down each aisle to look at all the options before checking out the rest of the massive store. Since it was early in the morning, the bakery and prepared food areas were bustling with workers putting out fresh food and it smelled divine. The fresh fruit and breakfast yogurt section blew me away! I was very impressed. Regular shopper at this HyVee but today we had a less than desirable experience. At checkout the sales receipt came out like an accordian having been jammed in the machine. Walking out of the store we noticed it was not even our receipt and went back to the register to recover the correct receipt. Long story short after waiting 15 minutes or more, we were given computer print out on two 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper and the only comment was "sorry about that". Not exactly what I'd expect from a store when paying their prices. P.S. I did bag my own groceries today too. read more
