We were actually in the neighborhood for House of Secrets next door, but once I saw a painting of Divine in the window I swore I'd hit them up once we were finished with HoS. This place is a gold mine of bizarre, morbid mixed media art; I don't even know where to begin. The walls are completely covered in things like paintings of intercourse between people with animal heads, scenes of murders, three-dimensional vampire pieces, portraits that look like they were done by someone hallucinating on mushrooms, and works inspired by historic figures, the Virgin Mary, and circus sideshow acts. One day I shall own one of their erotic prints of Lobster Boy. This I vow. Other pieces included mounted zombie heads, flesh rotting off the skull. There was even a decaying head and torso with a light installed inside the ribcage, illuminating the remaining skin and meat clinging to the bones. All made with latex, rubber, and plastic, of course. Bought a ceramic tiki mug for $6 and tacked on a baggie of "Strangely Delicious Spicy Peanut Brittle with Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt" ($5). My god, this stuff was astoundingly wonderful -- brittle was crunchy and not too hard, covered in chocolate, with each flavor present yet not overwhelming. They use a smart phone with a swipe reader (Square?) for purchases with credit card and you sign with your finger. Receipts can be e-mailed or texted to you. The guy working the counter (had a mostly shaved scalp except for the long, narrow mane of black hair he had growing from the top of his head) was very cool and seemed to appreciate our enthusiasm for the gallery's artwork on display. This might just be my favorite gallery -- a very welcome, unexpected find. read more

I have been going here for a few years now. If you like to BUY art this place is for you as the gallery truly believes in making the work accessible to those who really want it. They will take payments (don't forget to make 'em!) and the owner is super friendly and knowledgeable about the work. Also Hyaena has the best prices around. You can get original works from twenty bucks (sometimes less) to over a thousand. If you DON'T BUY art, but are looking for a very cool place to see some cutting edge stuff here in town, this place is also for you. There is ABSOLUTELY NO CRAPPY ART SCENE ATTITUDE here. I love that about this place. There is love and respect for all those that bring the same. I am a collector and have found this place to be nothing but professional, customer service oriented and most welcoming. The subject matter in the work varies greatly from art that is perfect for children to art that is very dark and adult. They have a new show every two weeks with a FREE reception that includes drinks and snacks and a chance to meet the artist. The receptions usually draw in other artists from the gallery and elsewhere, so you never know who you might meet if you come to the receptions. hyaenagallery.com is the website. As an art lover, I can not praise this place any higher. So cool and hip and fun and always welcoming to EVERYONE. I've been visiting this gallery for more than 7 years. The owner, Bill Shafer, always has a wonderful selection of art, collectibles, and merchandise. I have a small collection of art and items I've purchased from here throughout the years. He treats his customers and artists wonderfully. The gallery has reception nights, with no entry fees, free drinks, free snacks, and a chance to meet the artists in person. There's now the added benefit of Ace of Vase located in the gallery, which gives me a chance to buy flowers and plants. Sheri runs Ace of Vase and is helpful in answering any questions. Yes, the artwork can be very horror/sexually charged (not for everyone) but they also have unique pieces perfect for gifts to friends who like horror and sci-fi art. This place is amazing! They have a large selection of "eccentric" yet interesting art. Some of the collection includes art from reputable names in the art, music, and animation worlds. I ended up getting 4 original animation cels and a London mask for less than 100 dollars. Insanity I tells you! They allow people to participate, enjoy, and appreciate art on a different level than that of the boring, contemporary art gallery. The owner, Bill, was immensely nice, approachable, and easy to talk to, sometimes it's hard to talk to people being somewhat introverted. Very interesting art. They call it "eclectic," which is misleading since it implies some kind of variety. The thing all of the art has in common is "disturbed." My favorite thing that I considered buying was an animated picture of a little boy saying, "cunt" to a little girl. Some of the more disturbed art works include a decaying skull, fetuses in jars, and serial killers painted alongside childhood themes like clowns and balloons. All of that is modest compared to the cadavre magazine porn where nearly naked girls are cuddling with and kissing corpses. It was a very cool look into a different kind of art scene. I like how if you were to go to a place like this in Alabama or some relic of the south, you would see disgusted and frightened looks, but here in southern cal, you have enough open minded people to come check out this kinda art without recoiling in horror. read more

I absolutely love this store, but I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked in recently. It has been turned into a freezing flower shop, with 80% of floral decor and 20% of cool horror stuff. I don't mean to be a negative nancy, but this combination of a flower boutique with a horror memorabilia shop DOES NOT WORK. It is an eye sore from the inside out, and sadly it no longer holds a unique place in my heart. I will not be going back. read more

Awesome little gothy/monster/zombie art shop! They have an interesting eclectic mix of artwork, not for the squeamish ones! We have bought some artwork there for our home before. There is a giant skeleton corpse hanging lamp there right now that I would so buy if I had the money!! They even have an artwork vending machine, so cool! Really cool place. The juxtaposition of visions of horror among the scent and beauty of fresh cut flowers is almost surreal. Lots of really unique art, collectibles, etc. Got three awesome prints and two books for under $75. The owner is super chill and more than happy to show you his serial killer stuff!
