Chicken Tikka masala, garlic naan and chicken dum biryani
    Gina T.

Since the pandemic, there's a trend of restaurants serving small portions and jacking up their prices. My wallet cries every time I eat out nowadays. Hyderabad hub is one of the few places that gives me pre-pandemic feel. We ordered chicken dum biryani and chicken tikka masala for $14 each. The portions were HUGE! The biryani is good for 3 meals while the sauce for tikka masala is good for 2-3 meals. They were also really flavorful -- lots of spices utilized with mild level of heat. We also ordered garlic naan and mango lassi. The naan was super garlicky in a good way. This is one of the few places where the lassi have a strong mango flavor.

When I first moved to this area back in 2008, this place was an Indian restaurant called Lentil Garden. The food was good back then but the service wasn't. Since then this place has changed ownership, chefs and names several times, although it always remained an Indian restaurant. Currently known as Hyderabad House, it seems to have gone way downhill. When I visited them today at 11:15, the door was wide open so I walked in. Their hours on yelp say they open at 11 but on their window it says 11:30. I noticed this on my way out. I wanted takeaway so I went to the counter and started looking at the menu. One of the gentlemen working there told me they weren't open till 11:30 but allowed me to wait inside looking at the menu. The two gentlemen conversed back and forth and seemed to be busy taking stuff out to a car. Maybe they do catering. The one gentleman completely ignored me as if customer service was beneath him. Around 11:20 the gentleman who had spoken to me asked if I was ready to order. I think they wanted to get rid of me. I ordered the Indo-Chinese rice, no meat. He informed me that it wouldn't be ready till noon. Forty minutes to make a rice dish? Now I really felt like they were hoping that I would leave. But I've never been one to walk away from a good challenge so I said "ok, that's fine i'll wait". They weren't getting rid of me now even if they had to send to India for that rice! Lo and behold my order was in the bag and ready at 11:40. There were still no other customers in the place. There is an old buffet set-up in back but I was told they don't do a buffet. Maybe it's leftover from previous owners and waiting for the next ones who might use it. There is plenty of comfortable seating inside including tables and booths. The tv was playing current Indian music. The atmosphere is nice. When I got my order home it was a disappointment. The salt level was overwhelming and although I ordered it mild, there was no Indo-Chinese flavor. I have had this item many times at other restaurants so I know what to expect. This was not the flavor that I have come to enjoy. I doctored it up so that it was edible but that defeats the point of getting takeaway. I might as well cook it myself at home. And yes, I've been cooking Indian food for over 15 years, having learned from numerous good Indian cooks. So bottom line, I don't plan to return to Hyderabad House or recommend it. But I'll watch for it's name to change again...

    Butter chicken and garlic naan

A friend recommended this place, and I was blown away by how amazing it was here. Everything cooked perfectly. The garlic naan was perfect, the butter chicken was so creamy, tender, and flavorful, cauliflower appetizer was delicious and had a phenomenal texture, and the eggplant dish was out of this world. I will definitely be coming here regularly. It's been about 20 years since I had Indian food this good. I had tried so many places to find something this good, and I finally found it after years of searching. Staff was so nice too, let us come in 20 minutes before closing.

Came for lunch today. Delicious food, an assortment of meat and vegetable items served to me on a tray. See photo. Really enjoyed the flavors and textures. Seasonings were just right (not overly spicy/hot). Comes with naan, rice and condiments. Was glad to see it isn't another self serve buffet: table service appeals more to me. Very attentive and smiling staff. I'l definitely return.

Very nice place for Biryani! We tried the chicken dum Biryani and goat dum Biryani. Both the meats were very flavorful n cooked well. Portions were great. One Biryani is definitely enough for 2 people. Obviously names of few of biryani's can confuse you in choosing but the guy who took our order was also super helpful in explaining what flavors to expect in each type of Biryani. Will definitely visit again!

The location and atmosphere is nothing special, but that isn't why you come here. Both times I've gone it's been busy, but we were able to get seated right away. The paneer makhani curry is delectable. It's rich, sweet, spicy, creamy, and has a great depth of flavor and spices. The shrimp biryani was the standout dish for me that I still keep thinking about. The rice was aromatic and cooked perfectly, while the shrimp was robust, bright, and very spicy. I would recommend ordering a spice level down from what you would normally get.The mini samosas were packed with flavor and I loved all onions in them. The garlic naan was also solid. All around incredible food!

Unfortunately, my second order via DoorDash missed the mark in two significant ways: 1) Spice level not honored: I ordered butter chicken and Mughlai paneer and selected "mild", specifically because my 5-year-old was going to eat with me. What arrived was unbearably hot, even for an adult used to spicy Indian food. I double-checked my receipt and the mild selection was clearly there. Neither dish was edible for my child, and I could barely get through it myself. What's especially frustrating is that my first order at mild spice came out perfectly mild. Dishes like butter chicken and Mughlai korma-style preparations are traditionally on the gentler end of the heat spectrum. It would be great if the restaurant could maintain consistency in honoring spice level selections, as it makes a difference for the person eating it. 2) No rice with the main course: In every Indian restaurant I've visited globally, a main entree comes with a side of rice as standard. I didn't select "extra rice" on DoorDash assuming this was a given, and added only a garlic naan. What arrived was two entrees and a very small portion of naan (two thin slices, really enough for one person), and no rice at all. A heads-up on the menu or at checkout that rice is not included would go a long way. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously, because the food itself is very tasty!

I read somewhere that this little Indian eatery is the most Indian of Indian restaurants in Portland. That made me eager to try it. The space is half restaurant, where you walk up to the counter to order, and half Indian grocery. In between they have a large case with chat (snacks) and sweets (every kind of Indian sweet you can imagine) as well as fancy looking slices of cakes and pastries. This isn't your average Indian restaurant with sitar music, fancy decor and high prices. This is where to go with a family, or a casual meal with great prices and generous portions. Food is served on paper plates on plastic trays and you bus your own table. The first thing we had while waiting for our food was mango lassi. Wow! I've consumed (and made at home) many of those but these were some of the best! Perfect amount of mango and the consistency was great! Loved it! My husband was starving so he chose a bun filled with chicken from the case. It was tasty. I don't know what it's called. I wanted a masala dosa though. They have quite a few kinds on the menu. Working and traveling in India I never came across so many kinds. I opted for a Mysore Masala Dosa. The helpful woman behind the counter explained they have more flavorful spices added to this kind of dosa. My husband ordered the goat korma, which was on a little daily special sign on the counter. My dosa came out fairly quickly. I don't think I've ever had a larger one! See my photo! There was ample potato filling inside as well. Soft and delicious with onion, peas & carrots, like it's supposed to. The Mysore spice was ok but just heavily sprinkled on inside the dosa which made it a little dry. Sambar always comes with dosas-a beautiful tasting soup. I wished they were more generous with that. They only gave me a tiny cupful. Green & red chutneys came with it too. They were fine but not that amazing. My husband's goat curry took a long time to arrive! I was halfway or more through my giant dosa before it was finally ready. I didn't try it and also forgot to take a photo. Sorry. He said it was flavorful and the meat was tender. As in most traditional Indian goat curries, there were small bits of bone and also some significant pieces of fat. But the portion was generous and lots of rice came alongside it too. He took some of both home. We were too full for sweets, but I did a little shopping in the store after. Here's a little tip for you: Don't buy spices (of most kinds) at the supermarket. Buy them at an Indian store-they are always a great deal. I bought whole peppercorns for my pepper mill for a great price (Sorry Penzy's) and some others. But I felt like I struck it rich finding mango Shrikand in the freezer case! Woohoo! We used to eat that at a restaurant when we lived in Pune, India. We took it home with us. I had to knock off a star because our food wasn't ready at the same time. Bummer. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could. I can see where some would mark them down because it isn't fancy, but this little place made me happy and I want to go back for more.

Vanakkam brought an absolute feast down from Portland to Eugene for our wedding. Seriously, for the price of your average food cart entree these days, you can have an all-you-can-eat, high-quality, high-variety lunch. And this restaurant doesn't just churn out the basic stuff, either. You might get a bhindi masala, or goat biryani, along with some of the more typical plates like butter chicken. They mix it up, which is the sign of a great buffet. Honestly, they do something truly special with their tandoori chicken.
