It's our frequent go to place for dosas and curries. Dosas like Mysore Masala, rava dosa, paper dosas are usually consistent and good. Curries are okay, nothing great. We tried the chicken sampler platter which was good and tasty. Service is quick as well. Bollywood songs playing on a projector are always fun to watch. The food is slightly more expensive for my liking but since it's been consistent I don't mind it too much. read more

We had a delicious lunch celebrating my mamas birthday..We were seated quickly and our order was taken right away. Food came out beautifully prepared and presented. We ordered masala chai Goat Biriyani Lamb Curry Garlic nan The flavors were rich and delicious! Some of my goat was a little tough but mostly tender. Several years back, this was our go-to for good South Indian food when visiting Portland. Craved for Indian food and was hugely disappointed! The lack of long lines this time is a testament to the quality, sadly. None of the dishes we ordered was seasoned; lack of salt = lack of flavor! This was a common theme for all dishes. Went here recently and the quality has gone significantly downhill. It used to be our go-to in Portland. It won't be anymore. Lets start with the dahi Vada-- typically here the Vada is supposed to be soaked in water, squeezed out, and soaked for atleast half a day in flavored yogurt base, with chutneys, onions, cilantro etc. The water softens the skin of the Vada and renders a porosity; so when soaked immediately in the flavored yogurt base, it absorbs the flavors like a sponge. What we got: a lazy-ass version where a crispy Vada was soaked in plain yogurt and put in a bowl. That's it. We were like WTF. The only palatable item was the plain dosa-- applause for that. LOL. But to screw up a dosa requires a special sort of talent and to do that one wouldn't be operating a South Indian restaurant. So I will give bonus points for not screwing that up. LOL. Also ordered a fried rice and Gobi Manchurian! The Manchurian came in 10 minutes and the rice came 30 minutes after that. I am fair that Gobi Manchurian was stale; it was clearly microwaved. The peppers were raw. And the cauliflower was mushed up. No pictures were taken! It was a dinner nobody wanted to remember. read more

We used Chennai Masala for our wedding catering across three days (Sangeet, Ceremony, and Reception), and they absolutely blew us away. The food was incredible and our guests couldn't stop raving about it. What stood out the most was the variety and quality. Everyone who has been to an Indian wedding knows the pressure to deliver new and exciting items for guests. Sumi (the owner) included North Indian, Gujarati, South Indian, chaat items, as well as vegan options, and every dish was packed with authentic flavor. All of this for 250+ guests! Eight years since our last review, and it is one of those rare restaurants that didn't lower its standards during/after the pandemic. Still excellent. Lassis are great, two different kinds tried recently. Dosas still great and deliciously spicy. Service was attentive and helpful. Sumi was great with her communication prior to the event and communicated well with me all of the supplies she needed to successfully accomplish our catering. I had a great time at Chennai Masala !! First of all, the food was absolutely AMAZING!! We had chicken tikka masala, and it was so creamy, flavorful, and the chicken was cooked perfectly . We also got garlic naan and paneer naan, which were very good as well. Honestly, I'm usually garlic naan all the way, but somehow I thought the paneer naan was even better !! It was SO perfect . Thanks so much for a great dinner tonight! We stopped in for what we knew would be a delicious dosa, tandoori chicken, gobi manchurian (cauliflower coated with flour, deep fried and sauteed in tangy, spicy sauce with green onions - EXCEPTIONAL) and a simple meal subsequently evolved into a real night with friends and loved ones. The owners, Ashok & Sumi, treated us like ever-precious customers and we witnessed all the other diners being treated the same. What a lovely place! So many places have been closing earlier and it's hard to do an event and find a great place to meet up after 8-8:30 anymore but this gem of a place is open until 9:30! read more

I came to eat lunch at Chennai Masala today for the first time. My manager said this used to be one of her go-to spots before the pandemic, so I was excited to try it. We were greeted by our server immediately after walking in the door and had the whole restaurant to ourselves. They had a hot bar set up with multiple entrees to choose from. Our server gave us a short rundown of all of the options, and then we were each able to pick two. All of the sides shown in my picture were included. It was so nice to be able to try a bit of everything. While I did enjoy my meal, it wasn't up there with the most flavorful Indian food I've tried. I'm extremely sad that their standards and taste have gone down. We stopped eating here 3 years back when we got spoiled chutneys. When we reached out to them, they said their fridge/freezer went out and they didn't have any more chutneys. Acceptable, but we just stopped going there. I was craving for Parota kurma and wanted to give them another try. Unfortunately, this time, everything was subpar, and most of the food we ordered was inedible. Chutneys were spoiled, masala for dosa lacked flavor, and thayir vada was so sour (it was just vadai in sour curd, no garnishes) that we just threw it away. I took my parents from India after 5 years that too with half heart as they wanted to eat some South Indian tiffin and I regret everybit ! Chennai Masala is the real deal. Wow, surprised at how delicious all the dishes are because it's hard to find. And the dosas... two pages of options and huge dosa extends way out over the plate. Best sweet rice dessert I've has so far....warm and perfectly balanced, palatable and not too sweet. Even the Tikka Masala was spiced perfectly and actually spicy, not just creamy. The hotter, brown chicken curry tasted amazing like vindaloo - my personal favorite though was missing potato, so might have been akin to vindaloo, which is on the menu sepraretly. We came for lunch which was an $18 "combo" they showed off at what was a buffet they no longer offer. The combo came with two entree dishes, one savory onion/potato side, pakoras that are not greasy but crispy and light, rice, two pieces of thin naan (real not store?), and the warm dessert i mentioned. What a deal. Separately, they recommended their Indian tea in a small cappuccino sized metal cup - again, beat a drum here, but it was surprisingly good, and tasted like it has a small but of condensed milk - just right without tasting "sweet" which i don't like because I don't use sweetner in teas and coffees. But this was just right. We cannot wait to go back and try....everything... eventually! Kind and attentive service is more than noteworthy. Another rarity these days. And the vote of confidence started off well today by noting that the majority of customers are Indian. That is always a big sign of approval that you're in for the real deal. This is an updated review post pandemic, and I am so sad. This used to be the best Indian food in Portland and my solid go to. Unfortunately, it is now a no go. Went there for lunch today, and not surprised the famous buffet is gone and that is understandable. What wasn't understandable is why the food tastes absolutely nothing like it used to! I think it's the same owners, but the tikka masala was awful. A flavorless, brownish soupy sauce instead of the robust and sublime, thicker red/orangey masala sauce they are known for. In the old days you had to get there at 11:30am or you may not get in. Now, however, we arrived at 11:30 with friends we hadn't seen since the pandemic and left at 1:30 because we were talking. In that entire time there were a max of 5 tables filled. I guess I know why, and it really does make me very very sad. read more

We order to take out, given time for 20 min to pick up but it was longer than it took so add 5-10 minutes to pick up? Food was fine, but my saag was a bit sweeter and mild than I like. The rice was good but I don't eat rice. The chicken, naan bread and raita were good but for $19, I expected everything to be good. Years ago, I used to work at a company located near Chennai Masala, and they had a buffet then, and everything was delicious. I stopped coming here after the first few tries, several years ago, due to getting sick repeatedly-but I am so GLAD I gave it another chance. As of now, it's the best Indian food in the area I typically order over the phone, but the staff is always accommodating of specifications (my mom likes her Indian food mild, for instance), and patient with questions and lengthy orders. My only complaints would be a little inconsistency in quality (but still good) and portions. I have unfortunately had a few orders of chicken entrees, for example, with very little chicken in them. For the price of food today, I would hope that wouldn't be an issue. Hopefully it's not ongoing. I also have experienced spoiled chutneys (multiple times) as mentioned in other reviews. When I have popped in for a pickup, the ambiance seemed fresh, light, and contemporary compared to the "throw away" style of a lot of such places that don't seem to put thought into the fixtures or decor.
