This is the last do it yourself marinas in the area, I appreciate being able to do my own work they will paint the bottom if you don't want o. The staff is GREAT from the office to the boat yard. The travel lift operator is the best I have seen he takes his time and makes sure it is right. I also was able to snag a moorage spot for my 36' PB prices are great this is not a live aboard facility so no showers or laundry but that is ok with me I knew in advance. My brother bought a yacht in September. The past owners had it at hylebos and moorage was PAID through September. We had it there for a week my brother paid 2 months plus deposit then we moved it to olympia .that was over 700.00 not a cent was returned they don't return calls .they gave back $50 when we returned the keys september 8th.they are not honest they will take your money .never gave a receipt bet they enjoyed pocketing our money. read more

In early 2023 we made an appointment to have our 1977 Formosa 41 hauled out at Hylebos Marina, talking with the staff about the boat and showing pictures from its previous haul-out for reference. Unfortunately, when the scheduled appointment came in May, my wife and I were busy being full time hospice attendants to her mother. Eventually, after events took their course, we rescheduled a haul-out for our Formosa 41 with Hylebos Marina. Again, we showed pictures, we talked about the boat, and we agreed to a date. The day before the scheduled haul-out I staged the boat at their marina for the early morning, high-tide, haul-out. They came down to the docks and looked at boat and said it was too dirty, and that they didn't think the marina owner would allow them to haul it out. They said the owner would look at it in the morning, but this time, after over a year's discussion about this Formosa, they told us the owner did not like Formosas and probably wouldn't allow it anyway. The next morning I arrived early to meet with the owner and hopefully get the boat hauled, but he had already looked before I got there and said "no" (not to me personally, though). I was told to take it back to my home marina, clean it up, send them pictures and they would then decide if they would haul it out. I did, and we did clean it up. After the previous year's worth of neglect, she wasn't exactly Bristol, but she sure looked good. I took copious photos and sent them to Linda at the Hylebos Marina (Linda has been very good through this whole sordid event). I was told the owner was on a two week vacation and would decide when he returned. Yesterday I was told "no" again, explicitly stating that the owner does not like Formosas and therefore would not haul our boat. This boat yard is anything but tidy, riddled with derelicts that don't look half as good as our Formosa, even when it was in its dirtiest condition. It seems incongruous that the owner's prejudice says our boat is not welcome in his yard. Perhaps it's his right to express such prejudice in a public business, but it doesn't make it right. It's conceivable he could refuse to haul your boat because he doesn't like the color of your hull, or how you tie your shoes, or how you dress, or who you love or the color of your skin. Prejudice it prejudice, regardless of one's justifications. This is no way to conduct a business, and I would like that all you who made it this far through this screed of disgust not to honor this man with your business, he cares not whether he earns it, which should be a red flag on how he'll treat your boat. read more

I have been very satisfied with the service/staff at The Hylbos Marina. I've hauled out there at least three or four times in the past. Their rates are reasonable and their people are always very helpful. My only concern is that I haven't received a response to my recent calls & emails during the month of March. read more

This review is for the Hylebos Boat Yard associated with the Hylebos Marina, but that's obviously two distinct functions. I have a 32 Bayliner powerboat for reference, which I just had painted this week Sept. 2017. I saw one gentleman complained about paying them to troubleshoot an electrolysis problem, and wasn't happy. I can empathize and agree with his point, but have to say having done such troubleshooting on my boat (and being an electrical engineer), that I consider such work a very specialized skill set. I would not use these guys, or many other such shops for this. As an aside, a very methodical troubleshooting approach is set out in the book ' Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual' by Nigel Calder It helped me a lot (my issue was that the marina had swapped the neutral and ground at the dock receptacle). Sorry to bore all of you on this subject. Truth in disclosure- I've only used this boat yard 3-4 times and CSR Des Moines once, so my experience is limited. PRO's: 1. Hey, at least you can actually work on your boat yourself. CSR basically said when they were done with the work I was paying them for, I was out. Understandably, given their limited real estate. 2. I felt the storage was cheap per day at $20, so didn't feel that rushed to get done for a change. 3. They sell some shop supplies in the office, including zincs, but mainly painting supplies including bottom paint. I didn't see their prices as that out of line. At Harbor Anode in Seattle I paid $18.11 for a R3 trim tab zinc, at Hylebos it was $18.95, so not worth the drive. I will order online next time though...in the heat of battle it's nice to have access to such materials immediately. 4. J&G Marine is within a ¼ mile, and West Marine is about 15 minutes away. 5. I felt the $1100 for bottom paint reasonable, and this was for Pettit Trinidad hard paint (not the SR-slime resistant version). 6. Weather permitting, they're fast. Paint for my boat took a day to a day and a half, depending on start time and weather. If it rains and they can't paint, you don't pay for extra days of storage. 7. You can paint your own boat if you wish, and they rent vacuum style sanders for prep, or you can provide your own as long as it meets their criteria (needs a filter and bag I think, but verify, so the regular wet/dry vacuums are out). 8. The yard is accessible for long work days in summer. Something like 8 to 8 or so. CON's: 1. You'll have the pleasure of working on one of the most polluted waterways in the US (Thanks Occidental Chemicals!! and others), though they are making cleanup efforts. 2. They have a weak site electrical system, so you aren't going to run anything but small tools, no air compressors, etc. No 30-amp receptacles to keep your boat battery charger operating, etc. 3. They have extremely strict environmental restrictions (which is somewhat ironic given item 1 above. Isn't bottom paint DESIGNED to wear off in the water?), which impair even simple tasks. Do not think of flicking your brush on the gravel when cleaning it; do not think of washing your boat WHATSOEVER! They charged someone for both of these infractions while I was there, and it wasn't a minor amount. Wash your boat before going there, or you're left with cleaning it with a damp rag. No grinding is allowed. They did let me use a wire brush in a drill for cleaning running gear, but verify. They go over all the restrictions when you get hauled out, so you know what's going on and are forewarned. 4. Freeway off-ramps can be very busy with freight trucks, given this is the Port of Tacoma. 5. Don't leave even a wrench laying out- it will be gone when you return the next day (anybody have a stubby 14mm wrench for sale?). 6. On the local boating forum, I know one of the staff has received comments for being surly, which I too experienced, but I think he's mellowed with age. That said, he/they do not suffer fools lightly, so simply don't be a fool. 7. Restrooms suck, but what do you expect for a boat yard? The men's sink drains directly on the floor into a floor drain, so enjoy and watch the shoes. 8. I'm pretty sure use of credit cards will cost you extra, so bring your local personal check or cash. On June 18th 2020 I had my 36 ft sail boat hauled out of the water so I could do the bottom paint and haul maintenance. As I got the bottom paint on and I requested to have the boat stands move to apply the bottom paint to the spots that needed to be covered, they happened to be out of wax paper that they use to put between the fresh paint and the stand pads. So that was a foul, when the lift operator pick up my boat to launch it on June 25th, the paint was stuck to the stand pads. I ended up chasing the boat to the water with a paint brush trying to touch up the bad spots left from the stand pads. But as it was that's nothing compared to what was coming! The lift operator set my boat in the water and as he set it in he moves the back sling from the lift to kind of give the boat a little swing out of the lift. Well that ended up costing me almost $9000.00 dollars to repair. As I motored away from the boat yard I was at an idle and never noticed any thing out of the ordinary, as I throttled up to get under the bridge the boat picked up a very bad vibration. I shut the engine down and sailed back to my slip at the Chinook Marina. I got in my car and went back to the boat yard and told Linda at the desk,about it and asked if I could get hauled out to see what was going on, as I was going to have US Boat tow me back to the yard. She said I would have to speak to Ron Oline the owner, and he would be there tomorrow. So I go back to talk to Ron to next morning about a haul out, he's not at the yard and Linda told me that he told her not to haul my boat out again. I was quite POed about the response. I stopped payment on the check, and sent him a letter about lets figure this out, and I would pay for the haul out if the problem wasn't the fault of the yard. He served me with a small claims case for services rendered,,,,,, he said I had no proof or pictures. But he refused to lift my boat! I ended up setting at my slip in the Marina all summer, as I on three waiting lists to get my boat hauled out to figure out the problem. At the end of July, I finally got a call from a boat yard that had an opening. Ended up being out on the hard for the month of August with a bent prop shaft and the transmission damaged from the bent prop shaft. SO, I spent all summer with a boat at the dock or on the hard.. I can only say that Ron thinks he can just damage your boat then tell you, TO BAD!!!!! Well while I was in the other boat yard I meet two other boat owners that had the same type of experience at the Hylebos Boat yard. I would tell anybody that has a question about the serves there, just go to the bath room at the boat yard, and look at how he takes care of it. That's how he would take care of your boat. Very friendly marina..they had smiles as they billed me 8 hrs @ 55 hr to investigate electrolysis on a 44 ft yacht...didn't fix the issue ? Just leaves a sour taste in your mouth...if you have money to burn then this is the marina for you read more
