High praise was given to Hype, and the pics showed nice results. I called the number provided and left a voicemail. Within an hour I received my callback from Emmily Bright, one of the co-owners to schedule my appointment for the following morning. Upon my arrival, Emmily was quick to greet me with a smile and welcomed me to her place. After some pleasant mutual conversation she had some thoughts about a good direction to go with my hair, so I let her have at it. I couldn't see a thing without my glasses on, but when all was said and done I had undergone an impressive transformation. Emmily has been highlighting, coloring, and cutting my hair for the last 5 years! She is amazing and I follow her everywhere so goes. I was so excited for her when she opened up her own salon. Hype is a beautiful and professional salon, just like Emmily! I have A LOT of hair and it has always been hard to find someone who can help me style it well. It's not long, just very thick, with some waviness. My blonde highlights look so natural, despite the fact that I haven't been a natural blonde since I was a kid. My students didn't even believe me when I told them that my hair is really darker (and we know how honest 2nd graders can be!) When I first saw Emmily a few years ago, my hair was down to the middle of my back. I wanted it short, which felt risky to try on my first visit. Fortunately, Emmily made me feel really comfortable and did a fantastic job. I loved the layers and texture she gave my hair. Of course I kept coming back to see her, and she does an even better job every time I see her (I'm still not sure how she does it). Her rates are very reasonable, it's easy to get an appointment that fits my schedule and she's so much fun to talk to. I went to Hype Salon to have all my hair chopped off. I had curly hair down to the middle of my back. It was in terrible shape and needed to go. Myra listened to what I wanted. Looked at the pictures that I pinned and asked me the correct questions (why, length and maintenance style) . And then she took my ponytail and chopped it off. I knew I was in good hands when she didn't even hesitate. She checked in with me throughout the haircut and made sure that I was still comfortable with both length and style. No, not everyone anyone with wavy hair can trust this place. Please don't tell me I can trust my haircut will be "bomb." It is not bomb. I'm stuck with "face framers" that I'll probably have to grow out for years, years of progress lost in an instant. I wish stylists would think in lengths of time rather than inches . . . I''ll be recovering from this terrible cut for maybe 4-5 years, so upsetting. I explained my reluctance to get my hair cut due to bad experiences before we started. I did not think I agreed to lose 6 inches anywhere. When I said I was uneasy with long lengths hitting the floor behind me the response was "this is what we talked about" - layering I guess. I emphasized I wanted to keep my length. When I realized how short the cut was on the left side of my head, I knew I had to let her even it out on the right before I said I was very unhappy. Unhappy is not the right word. Before the cut, I was clear that I wanted to keep the length I had and get it evened out, cleaned up, because I am so uneasy with stylists that I will most often get a home cut. I'm writing this review because I think Yelp only works when there are different experiences described. From what I gather, this place is good for curly hair, and I know that can be a challenge and will cost a little more. It is not good for wavy hair. I still don't really understand how it went so wrong . . . It looks rough and unprofessional. It seems like she cut it right in the middle of a wave causing it to flip every which way. I could have gotten another home cut and saved myself the cash and stress. I keep pulling on the "face framers" and wondering how long it will be before I get my length back, so so bad. read more

Emmily is the best! I began seeing her a couple of years ago when she was working at a different salon and am SO excited that she's opened up her own. Even though this one is further from my house, I will gladly go the extra distance to see her. Not only is she a fantastically talented hair stylist, she is also super fun to hang out with while she does it. Funny, down-to-earth, all around great person. I've done both the Devacut and regular women's haircut with Emmily now and I have to say, not only were the cuts awesome, but she provided a lot of helpful information and I felt comfortable bugging her with questions (particularly about curls, care and the like). As far as her personality, she's ultra friendly and disarming. Authentic and vibrant. Whenever my social anxiety hits and I'm like "ugh should I be saying something right now" or "am I spending too much time thinking of a response?" it's easy to nip it in the bud because you know she doesn't gaf either way. She's mostly moving her schedule over to the Burlingame location now so I'll say this about the other stylists--they're all great, too. During both haircuts I ended up in conversations with the other stylists and they're all bright and super easy to talk to. Can't speak for their work, but I'd be confident booking with any of them. Lastly, the space is clean and parking is easy metered parking, with some unmetered options in the neighborhood behind the studio. read more

Andrea Edwards with Hype Salon and Studio gave my hair LIFE!!!!! I have been wanting to wear my hair in its natural state for quite some time but I didn't know where to start. I was tempted to just do a big chop , but after a lot of YouTube videos and talking it over with friends I decided that a Deva Cut may be all I needed. I have been flat ironing my hair for over ten years so I was worried that my hair would have zero curl. Andrea worked her magic!!! I was so happy I nearly leaped out of the chair for joy!! Can I just start by saying WOW! I am officially in love with Hype! I walked in needing change for the meter, I couldn't use my card because my nails were too long and it would have gotten stuck. When I said that Emmily walked with me to my car, in the rain, and helped me. I walked back in thinking I had made an appointment with Juaquima through their online scheduling option. Unfortunately I went wrong somewhere and it did not book. I instantly went into panic mode, but Emmily saved the day! She said she had time to take me as well as the client she already had booked for a half an hour later. She was able to work on both of us. Now for the results.... I LOVE MY NEW CUT! My curls have been revived and have honestly never looked better. She even gave me product recommendations, showed me how to properly style it, and told me what ingredients to avoid if I ever needed to go for a cheaper option. I have found my forever salon in Hype. So lucky to have found Hype Salon and an available slot with Myra for hair and makeup for my maternity shoot-I was last minute trying to find someone and had no idea where to start looking and stumbled upon this gem! Myra listened to my ideas and helped my super indecisive self create the best look for the shoot. My experience with Emily was amazing! I have curly hair and went into the salon with a horrible haircut (awful short layers that made my hair look like a mushroom, literally). Not only did she completely fix my hair, she gave me the shape I've always wanted and have asked many stylists for. My hair finally has the volume, bounce, and hydration I've been looking for. This was the first time I've left a salon without having to play with my hair to work it out. I was even able to recreate the magic at home due to all the tips she taught me. I recently had a full bikini and eyebrow wax as well as a lash tint done by a friendly, knowledgeable and vivacious woman named Parrish. She was incredible. Not only did she make me feel very comfortable bearing it all (usually only seen by my hubby), but she took meticulous care of tweezing any stray hairs and had a technique that seemed to limit the irritation and leave no bumps in the bikini area. I also noticed that she used fresh wax sticks every time she retrieved hot wax. I have been to salons and waxing artist before that used the same stick for the entire process and often wondered if it was sanitary. Parrish explained the hazards of re-dipping, and I felt safe knowing that she is the type of aesthetician that does not cut corners. I am very happy that I listened to a couple of friends that suggested her, even though I had to travel to Oakland to see her, it was well worth it. My lashes look great and my eyebrows have a perfect arch to them. AND, her prices are better than reasonable..... when does that happen? I was almost hesitant to write this review because I want to make sure she is available and does not get too booked up. Thank you Parrish, you are a true professional! read more
