The level of communication/follow through and customer service I experienced with Molly Kate at Rarity Salon was disappointing to say the least. After my hair appointment on 5/28, I just now received at least some sort of compensation on 8/19. (2 and a half months later, after weeks of trying to get a response from her by having to repeat multiple messages about my concerns and seeking resolution but not receiving communication back in a timely manner if at all). The way she handled this situation reflects extremely poorly on Rarity Salon, and makes the standard of customer care at this salon questionable. As her client who got a service done from her, I don't feel I received the level of customer service I should've on top of her making it extremely difficult to communicate and get a response from her, especially for what I paid which was $340 for little to no visible change, my roots not being done, and patchy/uneven areas. I had previously got my hair done by Molly in January and was content with my experience so I returned on 5/28 for a hair color change. After showing pictures and discussing what I wanted , Molly told me this was achievable with a bleach wash (over Instagram dm messages which I have). However at the end of the appointment my hair color clearly did not change much and after paying, Molly told me how we may need multiple sessions to get the color I wanted and gave me her phone number to communicate with her. A couple of days later after trying to see if the color settled differently, I sent her a text about my concerns of there being little to no change to the color of my hair, but also my roots still being the same as if they weren't done, and some patchy areas. I sent this message with pictures of my hair to show her on 6/2 and I didn't get a response back until 6/22. I also sent messages about following up in between that time. In her reply on 6/22 she mentioned how this message "got lost" in her text thread, and that we can work on getting the color I wanted in future appointments, but no compensation was provided and I felt unsatisfied with this considering the result I got and her not being transparent about the multiple sessions in the first place. I told her I understand color change can be a process and it mignt not be exactly what I showed her, but at this point I was expressing my concerns and asking for at least coming in and redoing / a hair treatment since I didn't feel content with what I paid for. By the time she responded, I had my hair done from another hair stylist somewhere else since I had trips and events planned and needed it done, and I got the results I wanted. I asked for a couple minutes to talk multiple times so I can express my concerns and try to come to a resolution as she wasn't replying in a timely manner at all over text. My texts to her were on 6/23, 6/26, 6/29, and 7/9 with no replies. On 7/10 she proceeded to tell me to text her to chat. It was extremely difficult to communicate with her in this way. I sent another message on 7/10 still trying to express my concern and reach a fair solution. I got no response. Then after my message on 8/6, she replied on 8/7 that she is understanding of the situation and offered a partial refund. I replied essentially saying I agreed to the partial refund. I was still waiting for this to be completed. After another week passed and still not receiving anything from her, I texted her again on 8/14 and 8/18 to finally receive the $170 refund on 8/19. In my experience with other hair professionals, I have consistently received a much higher level of communication, professionalism, and customer service. This was my biggest issue because it was extremely difficult to get any response from Molly, and she honestly made the impression of ignoring the situation even to the point of blocking me from her stories on Instagram. The unprofessionalism on her part and the way this situation was handled by Molly reflects poorly on Rarity Salon. read more

I've had my 2 rows of 22" NBRs for nearly a year now and I love them! Since then, both Maryn and Lauren have been doing my move-ups and highlight/toners, and and they have both been SO amazing! On Friday 8/1, I booked an appointment with Natalie for Saturday 8/2 at 9 AM. She texted me and said "hey mark, sorry im not working tomorrow but I can do Sunday or monday". I replied and said "Sunday will work, let me know"...radio silence. However, she DID rebook me without asking for Monday at 9 am. Saturday morning 8/2, I got a text from her asking "what time is the latest youre available on Sunday". I replied im available any time on Sunday. Radio silence. Late evening on Sunday 8/3 I sent "i saw you rebooked me for 9 am on Monday, does this still work?" She replied "yes! Either that or 10 am would be better" I replied "great see you at 10" Monday 8/4 (day of appointment), I get a text asking "its a womens haircut right, I know it says mark but I figured it might be your husband". I explained "im a guy with long hair. I just had it cut from mid back length to shoulder length with balayage, but want want to maybe take it a little shorter to chin length". She asked me to send a picture of what I wanted. I literally typed in "womens hairstyle for men above jaw" clicked the first picture I saw and sent it to her (because I had a feeling she was going to say that she couldn't do mens cuts). The picture i sent was basically a messy bob with a side part. She replied "that's definitely a mens cut, Im comfortable doing bobs but nothing shorter"... I dont even know where to begin with the issues I have with this. First off, why not figure all this out before the day lf the appointments. Secondly, why rebook a time for me without asking (which i couldn't even cancel cause it didnt let me cancel without 48 hours notice), third stop ghosting your potential clients as I could have booked a different cut but she handled this at any time 3 days prior, fourth ive had long hair for a long time so I know what a mens vs womens cut is and I even told her I usually get "a woman's cut" (direct quote), fifth it is 100% illegal to discriminate based on gender alone in ca...im absolutely irate...ive had long hair for years and have been to many many salons and ive never had this problem...its hard for me to believe that if I was a woman and wanted a longer pixie cut or a chin length bob that you would say "sorry i can only do bobs up to a certain length"...shes been a stylist for 10 years, i even said "i get a womans haircut typically"...what kind of stylist cant do a womens haircut above shoulder length??? read more

Service #1: A haircut with Kaylyn, an absolute sweetheart and the best haircutter I've ever had. As someone who is extremely protective of my hair, I have always kept it long to my lower back. After making sure I was really ready to make the chop, she expertly chopped off over a foot and left my hair and myself feeling so revitalized. I also got some short face framing pieces for the first time and I love them. We talked about what my coloring journey would be like, but I wasn't ready until... Service #2: My first color! With Kaylyn again, and of course help from some team members -- Oh, btw, this is a team-based salon. AKA, they all work together and you don't need to worry about anyone trying to upsell you for a commission bonus or worry that your hair is going to be messed up from someone else using a conflicting style since they follow the same training, protocols, & ideology. Tbh, I was a mess for this first appointment and had no clue what I wanted and had like 20 inspo pics and vague instructions besides "I want something new and lighter, I trust you, and please teach me what to do." Kaylyn 1000% delivered again and was so patient with me and walked me through all the new words and routines and everything else in the world of hair coloring. Service #3: I was ready to go bigger & bolder and got a full balayage done to get me there. This time I was with Katie, the owner, who mapped out my head and gave instructions to a second Katie, and the two of them had my hair foiled & processing so fast (I had messed up my scheduling and needed to head back to Davis for class asap). I had the best conversation with Katie about being a female business owner, leadership, culture, and team development, and it was obvious that this salon is a product of incredible talent, cohesive teamwork, and so many other things going on behind the scenes to give each client the best experience possible. Also, my hair was literally so, so perfect by the end of my appointment, and I got so many compliments at that class I had to race back home for. Last huge, HUGE point: these ladies are so helpful and *non-judgemental* when it comes to hair care. I literally knew nothing about hair care & color before being a client here (and I'm still learning with each visit) but they never once have they made me feel lame or inept for asking stupid questions, fumbling descriptions for what I'm going for, having way too many conflicting inspo pics, or the drug store products I use. I usually get my hair cut at Project XO Salon in San Francisco. With the pandemic, I haven't really had a reason to make it back to the Bay Area, and my hair is at a length that is no longer manageable or fun. I found Rarity Salon via Yelp, and it's close to my house so I can walk or bike easily. First impressions? Wow, everyone looks like they are straight out of a white sorority. I was the only non-white person in there as far as I could tell, which is terrifying to me these days. I decided to stick it out instead of leaving, and also because I really needed to chop off my mane. My appointment was with Kaylyn, one of the few (or only) people who actually cuts hair. Everyone else does extensions or coloring. I let her know what my lifestyle is like (hate showering, hate washing my hair, love sleeping in the dirt) and that I was looking for something super low maintenance.
