Emmily is an amazing businesswoman running a gorgeous, calm, welcoming, and professional space. The light alone in the salon is fantastic; but then add fantastic cuts and color and you'll never want to go anywhere else. Two weeks ago I wanted a last minute drastic change to my hair before Burning Man, Jessa accommodated me. Friday night and a few hours later my hair was transformed from medium brown with old highlights, to vibrant shades of purple. I received numerous compliments from people all around Berkeley and Emeryville. My hair color is still going strong despite the strong wind, dust, and sun of the desert. I really appreciate Myra! I've been seeing her for cut and color - both of which I'm very happy with. I have curly dry hair and am trying to figure out how much of my grey to keep and/or cover. I love the "dry" hair (not quite Deva) cuts she's been giving me - the resulting shape exceeded my expectations. Myra also reminded me of the powerful moisturizing effects of coconut oil (yes, duh?) and since using regularly as a leave-in, my hair is much less parched. Myra listens well and stands by her work, always offering to make any adjustments if one is not 100% satisfied. Terrible customer service. My stylist didn't show up for my appointment. I've never had that happen before. First, it took a week just to make an appointment with Heather because she didn't return calls or texts. But once my appointment was scheduled for a Sunday at noon, I got there to discover she hadn't made it in, said she got caught in traffic. I waited 20 minutes then left. Last month I was in desperate need of a color correction from dying my hair burgundy back in January. I was tired of the red hues and wanted to go back to my natural brown hair with some blonde highlights. Heather from Hype Salon saved me! First off, she took me as a walk-in on a Sunday afternoon, which is near impossible to find in the area. She did a process on my hair to remove the red without having to bleach my whole head, which kept my hair from frying. I really appreciate that she was genuinely concerned about the integrity of my hair. We decided to go on a "hair journey" together in gradual steps. After the first visit, Heather was able to remove about 90% of the red, which is amazing considering how bright my hair was before. She also gave me a great cut, taking weight off the bottom of my thick hair. Heather asked me to come back in a few weeks to do the highlights so that my hair could recover in between processes. The results after the second visit were beautiful! My hair was now definitely back to brown with some lighter areas on the bottom to give it an ombré look. I scheduled a third visit to go a shade lighter a few weeks later. The final results after the last visit are what I've been envisioning since I first walked into Hype Salon. Heather transformed my hair into what I showed her in my pictures, all the while maintaining my hair's health. I love the Laurel District location of the salon and that I can always find parking. Emmily Bright is the master of curls. I get compliments on my hair constantly. I found Emmily in August of 2013 at a different salon. I moved to the Bay Area and researched curly hairdressers but went to a different hairdresser who was listed as good with curls but... she was NOT good with curls :( I ended up booking my first appointment with Emmily a few days later to fix the other haircut. The first haircut Emmily gave me was hands down the best haircut I had EVER HAD in my entire adult life up to that point. Her knowledge and understanding of the way curls perform informs her skillful cutting. She cuts it dry, and talks about keeping the "curl families" together. The next time I saw her and told her that was the best haircut I'd ever had, she joked, "there's no pressure in living up to that!". But every haircut I have received from Emmily is always some amazing variation on the same theme -however slight it may be. And she is sooo patient with me even though every time I go in I think I might be ready for a change and it turns out I really want the same predictable thing -because my beautiful haircut works really perfectly with minimal daily effort!! Emmily genuinely cares about her clients. Over the years I have seen her interact with lots of folks. She is really present with each person. Hype Salon is by far the easiest five-star review I can give an establishment. I had the misfortune of Cinta Aveda in SF butchering my long, curly hair when I (regretfully) let them take a razor to it during what was supposed to be a hair styling. They removed well over half my volume and the remainder looked like a clown wig. Distraught, I needed someone to fix my hair quickly. I saw that Emmily was a curly hair specialist and, gratefully, she was able to schedule me the next day. As I expected, Emmily had to cut off most of my length. What she was able to do with the remainder was truly incredible. I had all these damaged, varying length hairs at the crown of my head that she worked around. She patiently cut and styled my hair while giving me excellent advice on how to manage my hair after the Aveda debacle. She showed me a lot of Deva products without ever trying to pressure me to buy them. What stood out to me more than the haircut itself was Emily's personality, confidence and aptitude as a hair stylist and business owner.
