Dry Jerk Salmon, dry rice and peas, dry salad and dry plantains. You will need a y'all glass of water to get this meal down the hatch.
    Sam F.

This was the first place my friend mentioned when I asked for seafood around his home. Well yes they have seafood buts it's more of a Caribbean restaurant with seafood dishes. I ordered the jerk salmon, rice and peas. It came with a salad which was pretty much lettuce and cheese with no dressing. The salmon was almost jerky due to being so dry. The jerk flavor was good but hard to enjoy since the piece of fish was so dry and tough. I'd probably end up trying this place again after I've drunken too much one night.

There are a mix of West African and Caribbean products. There is a whole room dedicated to bulk rices and grains. A large seafood department offering swordfish and shark among others is located in the back. The produce section is not as extensive as one would think for a place like this, but they have incredible prices for example, organic ginger for $1.99 a pound. My neighborhood supermarket is offering that for $7.99 a pound! Well, many people do their regular shopping here. It does appear to be set up for bulk purchases. There are health and beauty products by the registers and that's why I usually go because they have incredible prices on moisturizers and deodorants. Not only that, they import the international versions of domestic items like Dove for Men deodorant. You can tell because the labels are all in French!

Not sure if they changed cooks or recipes but the first time I had their Bronzino alla Griglia, I was blown away. Not just by the taste, but by presentation, price point, portion.. everything. It really is a great deal. I also tried their lobster and shrimp pasta, another amazing deal along with some other dishes but the Bronzino is the one dish I used to order consistently. Their version of Chimichurri was super flavorful and tangy. Not too salty or overpowering but just enough since it seemed like they weren't super heavy with any seasoning on the actual meat. If you look at the first picture I uploaded and compare it to the one I just posted, the difference is clear as day. Nowhere near as much garlic, no lemon slices, barely any parsley. Idk. I love fish so I still enjoyed it because it was obviously fresh and prepared well, but it could be better.

I have been around seafood my entire life and as a food professional it is gratifying to find a family run shop that cares about freshness. Really fresh seafood should smell clean, mild, and reminiscent of the open ocean, completely lacking the pungent, heavy smell that people typically associate with "fishiness". Avenue U Fish Market is clean and creamy smelling, just like right out of the water fresh. I bought soft-shell crabs last weekend that were the best I have ever had in my 60 years. They were lively, plump and most importantly delicious. Angelo personally picked 4 of them for me and my wife. I wanted to let Brooklyn and Rockaway know that it is worth the trip to Avenue U Fish Market. Keep up the great work and shop local. Support a small family run business. Get the Soft Shells while they are available. Thank you Angelo, Adam Smith

I know for a fact that their salmon is high-quality and delicious. One of the things I keep coming back for are the crab cakes. They get them from a local small business on Long Island I believe. They come frozen and you just have to heat them up in the oven for about 20 to 25 minutes or pan fry them for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Hard to find really good crabcakes and these are definitely worth it at $4.25 a piece.
