My first review was well over four years ago - and I thought it made sense to surface John again publicly, most notably due to the continued care and attention he gives our rental property out in East Austin. We are in the midst of a tenant turnover (not the best time as a landlord), and having the home sit idle for any amount of time seems like an eternity. But that's not how it is with John. Two days after the tenants moved out, John supported us by conducting a walkthrough of the place, highlighting areas that needed some attention, and got to work. He brought his mower and lawn edger to do some landscaping, flushed the water heater, fixed the front door lock (after troubleshooting it live with a support agent), tightened up some loose cabinetry in the kitchen and bedrooms, and even cleared out the garage of dust and loose debris. John is incredibly thoughtful and is a great communicator - thorough and complete. He actually takes care of the home like it is his own, and honestly, that level of detail and support helps me ensure that I can stand behind the value & security of home when it goes back on the market for the next tenants. What an aptly named company, because yes, I do in fact, love this handyman service. We had paid Home Depot to deliver and install our new dishwasher. When they showed up they said, "Nope there's a piece of wood trim in the way, and we can't," and they left. Literally that's all they said... and left. So I begin the process of calling around to plumbers and handy men. John is the only person that could squeeze our small project in, and when I say "squeeze" I mean it. He (like many others) was booked solid, BUT he went SO far out of his way to make it to our house. Even hanging around for a while in our part of town when I missed his call and it took me over an hour to get back to him. I couldn't believe it. He's clearly not short on business, so the fact that he was concerned enough about his costumer to just wait around and see if we would get back to him boggles my mind. He had SURGERY scheduled for the next day, and was so concerned that if he didn't get to our call that night he wouldn't be able to for some time. Again, he's not short on work, he just cared that it would be a nightmare for us to go that long w/o a dishwasher. Now you would think, busy as he is, with surgery the next day, and late in reply to him as we were, that he would rush the job. NOPE. He stayed here for hours making sure he did the job right, and he was a very pleasant "house guest" as well. Funny stories about his work. Tips about other "jobs" around our house that came up in conversation, and actually tips too, not just fishing for more work: "Oh yeah you could do that yourself, you just need XYZ and to watch out for these things." The dishwasher is installed, run beautifully, and the price was absolutely fair and appropriate. I probably would have paid more. Especially considering how long he was here, and that our instillation did have a few unexpected issues. Again you might worry with other companies, that all the polite conversation it racking up the price, but no way, not with John. Read the name of this business and believe it. John came recommended from my apartment complex and I even asked around and other residents were really happy with his service. His rate/hour was a little high seeming to me (compared to if I got a TaskRabbit or something) but TaskRabbits are unreliable and do not have the 15 years of service in ALL types of projects that John does. I have really intense concrete walls that he was able to drill through after trial and error that i would NEVER have been able to do- even any friends of mine would not have been able to do that. He made an appointment with me outside his normal business hours, he's very responsive via text messages, he used a drop cloth to catch the dust from his drywall work and constantly wiped up his mess as he worked, he agreed to wear boot covers I gave him (I don't wear shoes in my home), and he has a reasonable rate. I've worked with John twice - nearly 9 years apart - and he did great work both times! The first time he adjusted some doors that wouldn't close properly after we had new carpet put in, and he came up with a perfect idea to hang my bike rack on the garage wall. The most recent work was painting a new door with latex paint - tricky job, and his work is stellar. Still looks great after nearly a year has gone by. I am pleased with the work that John has done at my home but he left me feeling cheated and robbed. I am not one to write bad reviews but I do think that it is important for you to understand how the process works before booking an appointment for his services. I should have asked more questions and agreed to a price before I spent $720 for my back door to be sanded, hung and painted. I wasn't aware that dry time was something that I would have to pay for. I hired John to sand and paint my back door that had been worn from years of old paint and the dogs had torn down part of the frame. My husband took the door off and delivered it to a location to have the glass replaced (which was only $100, reasonable). At that point John retrieved the door, matched the paint colors and showed up at my house to paint. He is very friendly and I was unsure why he talked so much and now I know why "he charges by the hour and I paid $95 to hear short stories (silly me)" It took about three hours to sand the front and back, hang and paint the door. There was dry time involved to prime and paint two coats on either side, why I was charged $720 to repaint a door, to this day I will never understand. When I bring my car to get repaired, I am charged an hourly rate, not while my car is sitting on the lot but while it is being worked on. Actual work time is what I should have been charged, I am a fair person and really hope that you do not experience what I have gone through. I should have asked more questions and asked for a bid. I could have replaced my entire door and had Home Depot install it for $350. Ask for a bid, don't just let John come and work, he will take his time but you WILL PAY for it. read more

John and his helper Paul were great. They hung ceiling fans and fixtures for a couple of days averaging more than a ceiling fan an hour on high ceilings. They would have been even quicker if the shoddy new home construction by Gehan Homes on supposedly (and paid extra for) ceiling fan outlets and wiring had been done correctly. One fan alone took over two hours because the support had to be replaced in the attic. Having his helper and paying the additional for Paul was well worth it; it made things go much faster for John and saved money in the long run. I managed to reach him right away by phone before he headed back up north and he was at my place within 30 minutes from calling- probably unusual- but still great and I really appreciated his flexibility. The task was to remove a small kitchen cabinet that was above our fridge since a new fridge was being delivers in 2 days and it was too tall for the space. I had tried to remove it myself- but was only able to remove a few of the screws that it was mounted to the wall with. John came in- and within 5 minnutes had removed a couple of the screws and the whole thing came off. I agree with the other reviews on John. He does quality work, is very knowledgeable, explains what he is doing, and provides good communication. I just can't get around the rate he charges...$80 p/hr. Really? At that price, I found myself wanting him to work a bit faster so I could get more for my money. I had John help out with different tasks on a rental property while I was working on other projects as well. Most of the projects I could have done myself, but needed to get things done faster. He does have many contacts such as getting the matching interior door for my pantry, as well as contacting his buddy at Blue Dragon Plumbing once I got the toilet off and saw the flange was cracked. He has a nice size trailer with a whole work shop in there, and he let me borrow several tools while he was working so that I could complete my projects.
