A snack with the looks of an UFO. Not exactly the most beautiful cookie on earth, but its taste and smell is divine, especially when it's warm: exotic cinnamon flavor. The fact that it wasn't available in shops, but could only be bought 'illegally' at the home of an old Moluccan lady added to the flavour of the kue cucur. Last week I found out that one of my favorite takeaways and restaurants, Toko Bandung, was selling THE cookie of my youth. I stared for minutes at the FB-picture where I saw three cookies in a row with a bit of liquid gula djawa on top. Saturday I was reunited with my 'elementary school sweet hearts'. For about 8.70 euro you get white rice, 3 veggies, 2 meats and an egg. The portion was large - I was definitely stuffed. They also have loempia, lemper and other Indonesian goodies like kerupuk. They were very friendly and helpful. They don't fool around with the spices. This is like an Indonesian mama's cooking. Some dishes were quite spicy, which is the authentic way. There is a tiny table if you want to sit there and eat, but it's really a take out place. When I came around 5:30 pm, there was a line out the door with the local after-work crowd. I can see why: solid Indonesian food at great prices.

The sweet ladies that cook for them do their utmost to please the connaisseurs. Some weeks ago my mother decided to give the cook a break. She sent me to a takeaway close by and made me order some dishes. I went to Kedai Jalan-Jalan, a place run by the former Jakarta-born chef of the renowned Anak Depok in Den Dolder. The food I bought was a hit. The 'picky six' spoke highly of the ikan pepesan (spicy fish), the fried rice with shrimps, the rendang (beef stew) and the chicken with soy sauce. 'Next Sunday, you go again', said my mother. Yes, ma'am! This weekend I did some exploring and spotted a great vegetarian meal on the menu: lontong sayur, sticky rice cubes with a sauce of creamed coconut including labu siam (chayote), fermented soy beans, peteh (smelly beans) and a boiled egg. So no meat for today and go for something light, exotic and refreshing. Leftovers? Do as the Javanese do and eat lontong sayur for breakfast

We were able to indicate our preferences: satay and randang sauces for us! For the starter, we had shrimp egg rolls and pork satay skewers. Great satay and LOTS of it! As the main courses got there, we realized the HIGH quality of the restaurant: we were able to discover 12 different types of dishes (meats with sauces + vegetarian dishes). All very different and DELICIOUS. Our favorite were the chicken and the beef randang. Rice cooked in coconut cream is served on the side as well as prawn crackers. The servers - from the same family - know their stuff. They are very attentive and even funny. Everything is HOMEMADE, YES, the prawn crackers too! For dessert, we asked for the typical traditional Indonesian cake: spekkoek. Not gonna insist again that it was homemade but you could taste the freshness! Two different pieces are served with a coffee or tea, as you prefer and whipped cream. At the end of the meal, the servers invited us to visit their backyard! 45 minutes by foot to reach this restaurant outside of the center, but well worth-it!
